learned a trick from watching Takashi Amano - trim off all the leaves on the crypts before planting. the plant was moved, it's in shock, so first it will spend all energy in root growth, then leaf growth. By cutting off leaves before transplanting to a new tank, it causes the plant to regrow faster. thus eliminating crypt melt.
Yep! Alternatively, with this being a fresh setup, you can just let it melt in there and use the ammonia from the melt to cycle the tank. That's usually how I cycle a new tank if I can't insta-cycle it for whatever reason
Crypts melting is completely normal whenever you move them. You're considered lucky if they don't melt. For future reference, they would be done melting and return with new growth in less than a week if you had left them. Only required maintenance would have been to get rid of the melting leaves :)
I always plant cryptocoryne on setup to help get ammonia in the water for the initial cycle.. Crypts, plus bladder snails, plus fish food, plus some guppy fry... not instant, but reliably works in about a week for the first stocking of actual inhabitants
Nice to see the chili rasboras getting more space! I would love to see a larger school of them in the tank, but I'm excited for whatever you end up pairing them with!
Hey MD, in case you didn’t know, you can usually just cut of the leaves of any crypt to prevent it from melting. Jurijs Jutjajevs has a video about it called ‘How to avoid Cryptocoryne melting after planting’. Hope this helps!
I just got a mix of shrimp, and chili rasboras to go along with them. First time with such a tiny fish. Guppies are normally the smallest I go. LOVE them. Wish I had gotten more of them honestly. They are so tiny I don't even know if I got them as adults or juveniles (the place I got them from is known for sending people fry/juveniles). But they are soooo adorable lol. No more thinking! Just doing. You won't regret. If you do, send them my way ;) lol
This is exactly the kind of tank and stocking I have been planning for months! Its really hard to get any of the plants/fish where I live in the US so I just have to go to the local fish store a few times a week with my fingers crossed!
So happy to see that filter placement is a common issue for everyone. Gorgeous tank, I'm excited to see this because I just picked up a few Chili Rasboras this week myself!
@@julianaquascaped I painted the back of my tank with acrylic paint in a nice dark blue and love it. 2 years later and there are a few scratches, but nothing horrible. WIll use paint from now on. It just scrapes off with a razorblade. I didnt like the first blue i used, scraped it off and went a bit lighter and loved it. I used a nice small size extra smooth roller brush, worked a treat.
@@pattieboy5861 Nice, thanks! I considered painting mine black, but I decided against it because I want more depth and a brighter tank (especially because mine is already quite shadowy). I didn't really want a color background either (although I like the idea of white to light blue gradient). But thinking about it for a future tank! Also curious if there is some sort of clear paint coating that gives a similar effect to these stick-on transparent/opaque backgrounds.
This is why Jurijs cuts all the leaves and plants the crypts. It makes sense to do it that way. The roots are fine and healthy, just the leaves melt away and shoot new growth, so we might as well plant them with no leaves. That way no melting issues and we see new leaves straight away
Hi MD, thanks for giving the Chili rasboras a little more space. Btw they love blackwater and colour up in it. Have a nice evening. Greetings from Germany PS: The crypts will grow again.
Awesome looking scape as always bro! Your tanks are so sharp looking! Your videos inspired me to get a tank about 5 months ago and now I have 5 already! I'm hooked and can't stop! Absolutely love your designs though!

Can't believe you pulled those Crypts out after a few days.
Because of MD fish tanks, my aquarium gave birth to two more tanks! Hahahah! Hello from the Philippines! Thanks for the inspiration.
yep, my tank is about to give birth, and a racking system ensures there may be sextuplets coming in a few months....eek!
I know your setting up for instant impact, but with crypts,i cut all the leaves off and shorten the roots. When the leaves grow back,no melt.
Apparently if you cut all the leaves off the crypts when adding them to a new tank it avoids crypt melt bc they grow adapted to the new tank
omg that filter tip with the plastic thing !! you’re a genius i should try it 🤯

More amazed by this guy facial hair care than the tanks. Big up to him since he definitely has Mediterranean roots.
Can we just start officially calling the leftover substrate base layer the "MD Method"?
It’s the MethoD bro
Being thrifty is not being cheap, it's being smart using what is already there...and it's quite obvious this choice works very well !

Trim the current growth on your crips prior to transplanting. Leave the newest 1 or 2. Speeds up the process of assimilation. You were half way there
