I shared your video to two of my friends to show them they can stop doing water changes if they set their substrate up better and get more plants. My question is, since I am new to your videos, I have not layered my substrates like you have but I did redo two with the FLuval volcanic gravel. Is that going to be enough? My short plants seem to be estalishing and the stem plants are taking off.. would this work for a filterless system? Second question: Quarantine tanks. I now have a 10 gallon, but its bare and has a bubbler. I suppose I could reset this with proper gravel and make it be a plant grower while it is vacant of fish? Keep it fertilized? It wont have critters in it. How does it keep a biosystem? Love your videos and enthusiasm! I think Im ready now to try cherry shrimp for the third time and this time they will live...

Another nice tank! And nothing wrong with another Endler tank! I've got 5 tanks ranging from 10g - 75g, and right now my favorite is my 10g office tank with just Endlers of all sizes, snails, and some yellow shrimp. I've been fishkeeping 45 years, since I was about 10. Started with elementary school guppies we got to bring home, then moved on to tetras, cichlids, and what not, and it wasn't until the past year I rediscovered livebearers Your channel helped get me back into them.

    • @tumsfestival8027

Question! How long do they last? Are they indefinite? What’s the maintenance look like? Does the tank need to be redone after a couple months?

Really debating putting a tank in my office. I’m about halfway through my first tank in about 8 years for my private living room and would love a nano tank for my office at work. But… I’m worried I won’t get anything done if I have shrimp to stare at!

@@tumsfestival8027 Tank has been running almost a year as originally configured! Plants have all filled in nicely. The only endlers I've lost have been jumpers, and only males. I think they chase each other and get too excited. Tank has a glass cover, but they were jumping out the narrow gap between the glass cover and the filter. I put in a baffle a couple months ago that would hopefully deflect them back into the tank, and no jumpers since then. Endlers breed a lot, and so far, the population is self-sustaining and even increasing. Besides daily feeding, the tank takes 20 minutes a week to maintain. 50% water change, rinse the filter media, scrape the glass, and done! I highly recommend an office tank as a good stress reliever!

Try it! If it becomes a big distraction, you can always take it home. I adapted to mine and it doesn't distract me too much. I do like to look at it during a conference call, but it actually helps me focus, since I'm an accountant usually thinking abstract thoughts. @@Faymous9

I am so happy I have found your channel! I used to have two 50's, a 30 and some smaller baby raising tanks, 10's.... but its such a shock to see someone who does the fresh water fish instead of the complications of the salt water tanks.
I love fresh water fish, there is so much variety in them and they are so easy to care for -- but I'm in an apartment now and didn't think I wanted to hassle with tiny tanks, they take more cleaning than a big tank! But you have proven me wrong, this is a great way to do a nano tank, no hassle, no worry, it cleans itself this way.
Now I know that I should concentrate more on the plants and do snail and shrimps for cleaning, and that I don't have to have the heaters and pumps and tank hoods and undergravel filter systems.... and I could have my cardinals or neons or other tiny fish, I miss them sooo much...! and those flame endlers are stunning!
umm.... even if I don't do a tank for a year or so, now I have your channel -- a place to get so many ideas for tiny tanks in the meantime!! I'm gong to be watching your current and your past videos, thanks for so much great information!!

Endlers are awesome, but I love love love chili rasboras for nanos. And shrimp, of course! Just a note about the snails...don't put too many in at once in a small tank! I crashed my cycle in one ten gallon by tossing a man's handful of ramshorns...just plop and even with a good filter I got an ammonia spike.

I have been watching your videos for almost a year now, and have always paid close attention to how you hold the tweezers. Still I am having issues. The only thing I can think of now is: are the insides of your tweezers smooth?
Mine are a bit toothy, for lack of better word. I guess to have a better grip on things. But the downside is that if feels like the plants stay stuck to it more easily as I am trying to pull the tweezers back out. Any thoughts or advice?

Thick substrate layer is to get the anaerobic bacteria helping with the filtration. Assisting with nitrate conversion and sulfate conversion, and the biproducts of conversion escape the tank as gasses. You're right though, with low population short term tanks that you enjoy the plants provide all the purification you need.

Great video, I'd love to see a tank with Dwarf Emeralds or Celestial Pearl Danios. In fact it would be amazing to see one of your new big tanks have a huge shoal of them, instead of 10 or so in a Nano tank. Throw in some Badis and you could have a Myanmar lake shore biotype in the making!

Do you recycle any of the substrate you use? Just imagining it would be difficult to separate the sand from the other stuff once it's in the tank.

This nano looks phenominal! The pop of colour from those red plants is really beautiful. I want to get some of the Rotala H'ra myself but I've read it needs CO2 to really thrive and bring out the colours like you have here. Did it do well in this low tech setup?
