    I am hands down a Sega boy at heart. My favourite console ever will always be the Mega Drive. After 30 years, i am still playing on one. Ive got no time for modern consoles anymore. This said..i did switch come '97...and got a ps1. The Saturn was overshadowed in the end, and i hate to say it but Sony's console was far better. I ended my love affair with Sony after the Ps2 and PSP, both good platforms. I owned a SNES when i was young, but it quickly disappeared in favor of the Mega Drive which for me i prefered the games. The Saturn is a cool console though, and has some great games.

    • @Freshbrood

      I am only a retro fanboy, but I love all the early consoles equally. Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, N64, Genesis, Super NES, etc.. so owning a PS classic mini is the absolute perfect console for me. Also with keymapping and save states it fixes many problems that made some older games unplayable.

  • @RetroGamesBoy78
    @RetroGamesBoy78 3 года назад +12

    Unfortunately the Saturn was bombarded with second rate PS ports which made the hardware look bad when using 3D. but when a game was specifically made for Saturn from the ground up, and by developers that knew what they were doing, that's when you got to see what the Saturn was truly capable of.
    The reason Lobotomy Software decided not to port the Saturn version to the PlayStation was because the PS was incapable of emulating the Saturn version. You also missed out the fact that the PS version has terrible texture warping. The Saturn version is a far more enjoyable experience.

  • @PixelsLtd

    Great video as always! Buying a 2nd hand Saturn in 1997 I was absolutely astounded by how good Street Fighter Alpha 2 was, and that sent me down an expensive rabbit hole of modding my console and importing XMvsSF, MSHvsSF and Metal Slug. Both Duke Nukem and Quake on the Saturn were breathatking achievements at the time too. I'd add Dead or Alive to the list of 3d games better on the Saturn. Glad to see Mass Destruction here, I enjoy that game way more than I feel I should, but its just so damn fun.

  • @juststatedtheobvious9633
    @juststatedtheobvious9633 3 года назад +7

    Let's not overlook the real advantage of the Saturn: game stores were so desperate for new games that they'd actually import. And we were so desperate for new games that we'd be forced to actually play all the hidden gems while they were new, instead of the shiny guilty pleasure trash we'd normally be playing.
    Kind of like how the Vita forced me to fall in love with award winning indie games, despite my best efforts.

    • @ciredecgellar8232
      @ciredecgellar8232 3 года назад +1

      Considering that the N64 game library is not larger than that of the Saturn and that the import was not very varied either, I imagine the despair of the game store ....

    • @RetroGamesBoy78
      @RetroGamesBoy78 3 года назад +2

      Although I love the Saturn, the fact that imports were needed to bolster its library was not a plus! The fact that these games were not released in the West was a contribution to its demise.

    As someone from the UK, one of the best things about the Saturn compared to PS is that all of the UK games were either optimised in some way for 50Hz TVs (mostly the SEGA games) to be full screen or the correct speed, or able to be forced to 60Hz by a modded Saturn. This isn't possible for a UK PS so you either need to import all the games (expensive) or play the gimped UK versions.

    The big differences between Grandia on Saturn in 97, and Grandia on PSOne in 99, is that Grandia on Saturn was hyped by all the magazines to be the Final Fantasy VII killer from Sega via developer GameArts.
    Month after month we read in the games press about how promising it was looking, and how amazing it was going to be - how much GameArts loved the Saturn and knew how to use the hardware to deliver something truly epic. And then Sega shelved it for the west. And worse, we then had hype in the games press about all the additional Grandia Digital Museum discs Japan was getting.
    When the PSOne port came (so late that I played it on my PS2), we WANTED it to be as good as the Saturn version, because we'd been denied for YEARS, access to an English version, and didn't want to get a subpar port on PSOne just to be able to enjoy one of the Saturn's supposed killer apps, we had been cruelly denied.
    THANK GOODNESS Sega gave us Panzer Dragoon Saga - that WAS a Final Fantasy VII beater, =D,

    Also, "better frame rate on ps1 than on saturn" actual footage shows better frame rate on the saturn than on ps1.
    And yes, the frame rate on the saturn is higher, there's not much more to say. I don't know how you can say otherwise. Even if on ps1 you can reach 60 fps by staring at a wall, the game is not about staring at walls.
    Mortal Kombat 2 is much better on saturn too. I SO love the all synth soundtrack on that.

    I think another example of a 3D game being better on Saturn is Baroque (1998) by Sting Entertainment. The game was a Japanese-only release that only received unofficial translations after this video was uploaded. Anyway, the Saturn version has far superior visuals - better lighting and higher resolution sprites. The PS1 port came afterwards, and in the process it also padded out the game's length and added some unnecessary features. For anyone wanting try the game out today, most people will agree the Saturn version is the way to go.

    We can't forget one thing that automatically is better on saturn than 100% games on Ps1: the controller. Saturn cotroller is a lot better than PS1 controller, that segmented d-pad of Ps1 is a nightmare compared to the soft and responsive d-pad of Saturn, plus the 6 buttons on the face of the controller, the exactly positioning of the arcade buttons. Even the N64 controller have 6 buttons on the face, making it more appropriate for emulating the controls of arcade in fighting games (unfortunately, only Killer Instinct, War Gods and MK Trilogy make use of it).

    Loved PS1 Silhouette Mirage ... still holds up, prefer it over the Saturn by a long shot. Can only realistically get one weapon per game? Yeah, if you miss the mugging mechanic entirely. Should be beating the crap out of everything before shooting em. Saturn was kinda boring by comparison really... zipping around punching enemies, weaving through bullets and killing dudes while keeping an eye on energy just feels way more "Treasure" to me. But if it was only Working Designs at play here, bless em for that tweak.

    I know it hurts PS fans, but Symphony of the Night is better on Saturn too. Yes, the access to map is easier on PS1, but it's not like you take 1 minute on Saturn, as you got used to it, it doesn't make too much difference. The transparency stuff it's totally irrelevant. What it's relevant, is the fact that you have 3 characters on Saturn, available from the start, and 2 new areas, that while are not the most interesting or important to the game, it's still fun to explore and discover, specially if you have played the Ps1 version a lot. There's slowdowns on Saturn version, but they don't ruin the experience, we're playing with slowdowns since the Snes era.

    Just to comment on a minor note, you have to give SNK some credit when it came to porting Real Bout Fatal Fury "Special", tl;dr the PS1 and Saturn version of "RBFFS" have might as well been completely different games.
    The Saturn version is by all means a direct port of the NeoGeo version of RBFFS, its about as comparable to the neogeocd conversion.
    But the PS1 never really got the same RBFFS, it got a subtitle named "Dominated Mind" which helps it be distinct from the arcade original. Sure it used most of the assets from the arcade rom, but "DM" was more of a remix/gaiden where it completely changes how the game is. I know it doesnt matter for most people, but for those who play fighters at a technical level it would be a curiosity. DM was a rehauled fighting game that took RBFFS and made major changes (smart changes as far as making it run better on PS1). First It added two original characters that weren't playable in any other SNK game and a bunch of anime cutscenes from the same studio that did the Fatal Fury OVA's.
    And of course, game mechanics that were heavily altered, it removed "plane-switching" which was fatal fury series' attempt at more dynamic "3D" environment where characters can go in-and-out of the middle "plane", so "DM" is now simply "flat" more like capcom games, there's no sidestepping lending for a completely different game system. Some combo mechanics were of course changed as well (being able to cancel special moves into supers) as well as new defensive tools like a "parry" type dash, allowing you for some SF3-like moments. But yeah, it doesn't even play like a typical "Fatal Fury" game all said and done, and the reduction of the sprites needed for the sidestepping mechanic helped to make it work on the PS1 better.
    Thats all, cool vids as usual.

  • @DARS_04

    The PS1 doesn't have smaller sprites, most saturn capcom games couldnt do a resolution similar in dimension to the arcade so the sprites look bigger due to the lower resolution. PS1 just wasn't cut out to be a predominantly 2D machine (even though it did support compatible resolutions), it was the opposite in fact it was made with mostly 3D game development in mind.

    • @dqwno4900
      @dqwno4900 2 года назад +3

      the Saturn can do a resolution from 320×224 to 704×224. most arcade games have a resolution of about 384×224. The Saturn actually can output the arcade resolution, and higher resolutions. although it can output the same resolution as most arcade games, most of the Saturn versions don’t for some reason.

    I'll stick up for the PS1 version of SFA3 - it was an incredible unicorn port like RE2 on N64. SFA2 sucked really bad on PS1, but SFA3?
    It's not as good as the Saturn port with its RAM cart of course, but they closed the distance and pulled all kinds of tricks to get as much animation in as possible.
    I would say much more effort went into the PS1 version. The later Saturn port essentially took the PS1 versions' modes, replaced its graphics with the CPS2 graphics, demanded the RAM cart and called it a day.
    The PS1 version must have required blood sweat and tears to be as good as it was, whereas the Saturn version just required them to make a Saturn game.

    • @m.jordan5181
      @m.jordan5181 9 месяцев назад

      No, that is incorrect.
      The Saturn version actually *does* contain 'everything' included in the ps1 edition of SFA3. Check again and you'll see. However, the Saturn also has an exclusive mode to it called Reverse Dramatic Battle, which is not found in the ps1 port.
      Having said this... in terms of overall quality, the SEGA Saturn version (to this day) remains regarded as the best home conversion of SFZ3.
      For ps1, Capcom actually did change some things to assist with alleviating a bit of system workload. For example:
      -All hit connection sprites were completely taken out of the ps version and replaced with an effect that was instead drawn with polygons.
      -As usual, some animation frames were cut from the ps1 version.
      -As usual, some background graphical details were scaled back from the ps1 version... such as the animated skull within the sky on the Final Stage.
      -Overall sound quality is also slightly more compressed on the ps1 this time.
      BUT... Alpha 3 on the ps1 was still quite a respectable effort and one of the best offerings available on the system. I had it for my ps1 first before the Saturn import version was even announced and played it way too much.
