I've played it and it nails RoboCop! Doing mundane cop stuff reaally adds to the experience, making decisions whether to go by the book or gain public trust instead and for the first time since the second film it shows his human side with memorable PTSD segments. The city isn't as open world as expected, more like a bigger level to roam in but it works. Investigation is a bit Arkham City and the fun ways to take out enemies is pure power fantasy. It's glitchy at times but then a AA studio is doing it and they're doing it better than most AAA studios.

I think the “mundane” Side missions is what opens up the character building of Robocop to see more of the Alex Murphy humanistic side of Robocop. He deals with a lot of the trauma of being a cop but what I think comes across really well in Rogue City is the way different characters see Murphy. Some people see this monster made of metal and flesh. Lewis and mostly the other cops see Murphy a fellow police officer, OCP sees the machine. The poor people of Detroit who need him see someone trying to really help them and perhaps the only one that truly cares. I’m enjoying the game so much that I really hope they have DLC maybe flashbacks playing out the movies and as great a job so far they are doing of telling the story of Rogue City, they can fix the 2nd and 3rd movies by giving us the power to make decisions and get more insight into the story. I’d definitely buy that for a Dollar!

This new Robocop game is amazing Bro, I sat through 9hours of gameplay and it's cool to plod around as Robocop all day, shoot shit, solve issues, go after OCP. It's better than Robocop 3 and subsequent Robocop movies or TV, and it's not even a film, a solid replacement for every disappointing addition to his lore. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it's awesome, does the nostalgia amazingly and lets you spend time actually being Robocop, even though he's slow, if you're a Robocop fan how many times have you mimicked that walk? 😅. I guess I'm not a gamer, but I enjoyed watching others play it and the storyline and the slice of life Robocop moments where he just does mundane cop stuff, Weller's voice is back, Lewis is back and has more to do. I don't like the robots they chose to use as robocops robotic adversaries, I'd have went in another direction but that's just me, the end fight is awesome but bizarre (I have a fun theory about it though, I think the execs pulled a prank on the boss and pissed him off, switcheroo at the last minute) but it was still fun to see. Trust me Bro, give it a chance. I'm not even a gamer and it almost made me go out and buy a console, but then I remembered I ain't got game time 😓

Rouge City nails it. When Robo get memories echoes and sees things, like his old Alex Murphy in mirror reflexion, or starts to hear his wife voice out of nowhere, absolutely amazing and heartbreaking. Cheesy add commecrcials for straight up evil products, and batshit crazy news.... It is also a love letter to 80s movies, with references to They Live and Hans Gruber as main bad guy.

A lot of your points could also be laid on other video game adaptations, like Judge Dredd Etc.
What did you think of the "inspired" Robocop games of the '80s/90s, like ESWAT?
But, Robocop is Peter Weller's cash cow now, no one is calling out for him to reprise Buckaroo Banzai, so Murphy is his big money tree, though he's voiced Batman a few times in things.

Seems Robocop is the talk of town this past week.. and why not right.. our beloved franchise given some good treatment for once. I was 13 when the first movie came out and so I was blown away, til this day it holds a special place in my heart. With that said I am not trying to be an ahole but I feel I need to get this off my chest, that’s how much I love the franchise, my comparisons are obviously between the game and the first movie.
The Auto9 doesn’t sound anything at all, the HUD is close but not all the way, when in scanning mode a lot of the HUD interfaces and interactions are missing, like seeing Crime in progress when someone is doing something wrong is not there., or other interfaces like in the movie, The weapon holster doesn’t sound the same, when he makes sharp turns there are no servo sounds other than FMVs, No 3rd person view, it’s a must for a Robo game, C’mon guys really!, no thermal vision or at least I haven’t seen it yet, I am about 6 hrs into the game already. Anyhow, at this point I doubt Teyon will address these so hopefully one day modders will do their magic. In any event the game is the closest thing to reliving your 80s memories or simply satisfying your Robo fix. Go get it and support these folks!

  • @SKOTxFREE

I actually like Robocop Rogue city and think it’s the absolute best Robocop game ever made. Without getting too much into spoilers I’ll say the game is much more than the demo let’s on and In fact Rogue city is to Robocop what Arkham Asylum was to Batman. As for the older games as much as I tried to like them when I was a kid, the Main issue was that they were designed to be quarter munching arcade games and had a lot of cheap mechanics to get you killed and feeding the arcade game another 25 cents. I remember getting through the first level but every level after that took multiple continues until I just got tired of it all.
Rogue City I’ll say not only captures what it is to actually be Robocop, it captures the commentary the movies present so well to the point that shortly into the game you start to see more clearly than even the movie presents in the 2nd and 3rd movies that human side of Alex Murphy that the 2nd movie creepily explored with Murphy stalking his family. I’d really like to see your thoughts on the game to hear your impressions but I’d give it a 9 because it is Fun imo.

Not only does it play up both the action and adventure aspects to make a phenomenal game in itself. The environment is as much a character as our favorite Crime Prevention Unit. It may not be Detroit in exact detail, but it's exactly what we know as Old Detroit. They took time and built maps around the sets, or at least their appearance, and built scenarios that had those sweet little callbacks without having those callbacks take complete focus off the game. There's also a bit of surreal feeling when Robocop glitches, and you get those little nudges in the gameplay like "wait, is this the game, or is it... the game?"

I got to play the closed beta of Rogue City and I'm currently playing through the game since I purchased it with the 2 day early access, something I never do. I agree that while the game is a little rough around the edges it's still a solid game and probably the closet we've come to a fully realised Robocop experience. The satire is there, references are plentyful and the game does go into more depth about Robo/Murphy as a character (no spoilers from me though, not that kinda guy). So far its been a decent outting for Robocop this time around. Also no talking smack about Robocop Vs Terminator, that was the first videogame I ever played on the Megadrive 😂. Enjoyed the video though, thumbs up from me.

Regarding Robo's near-invulnerability, I feel Rogue City captures that feeling somewhat _after_ you significantly upgrade his defensive parameters; before that, it feels weird to come away from a fight against several poorly-armed punks "half-dead".

I then also saw that a police-man had children with a person belonging to an organization he was infiltrating, and now I don't really even know what I'm feeling, so on the whole I suppose learning about RoboCop has been both good and bad!

I feel like Robocop is so 100% of its time that when removed from that context, the world just gets less interesting. The challenge from a Robocop game should come from Murphy’s limitations as a cyborg. He doesn’t move like a person or react like a person. He doesn’t blend in and he can’t go undercover. He basically can’t do most things a regular cop can do, so where does a cop like Murphy fit into the police force? Self-awareness is the key (but also maybe the doom) of making a faithful authentic Robocop entry.

The main thing is that RoboCop is basically Anti-videogame protagonist. He's slow, he's near-indestructable, he has only one gun he uses constantly, he has strong moral compass and hardware-level directives that force him to do "the right thing" as long as "right thing" fits into company's profile. Good videogame protagonist has to be fast, relatively fragile (so players won't take rash, head-on attacks)
If someone would make 100% correct Robocop adaptation, it will be very dull game and while I have faith in Teyon, I played the demo as well, and, must admit, I bought game on the day of release (technically pre-order, but whatever), I can say this - it may not nail "ROBOCOP"iness of Robo, but boy, devs really try. And frankly, they don't just try to make Robocop into an FPS game. They really tried to make one thing right - make both ROBO and COP parts work, which, to many people, make it look as Deus Ex games, and to be frank, I am not against another good Deus Ex-like title, especially when devs try this hard to make it both a faithful recreation of the movies and a good game at the same time. From what I saw, so far, I can see really honest attempt at doing what Paul Verhoven did in 1980s. And to be honest - in my book honest attempt with passion, even when failed (and this is definitely not a true failure) is good enough.

Peter Weller didn't turn down returning as Murphy/Robocop in 3 what happen is he was busy filming David Cronberg Naked Lunch.Fred Dekker was forced to tone down cynicism and violence because studio wanted PG-13 rating 80s and 90s PG-13 when a film is not PG which wasn't a kids movie like it is today and PG-13 was gritty and edgy rating where you had to be 13 years old and parents had to be strongly caution PG-13 is not a kids rating till they tone it down after Super Bowl incident in which Janet Jackson nipple slip parents was like think of the children.Red Dawn is the first rated PG-13 Critters PG-13 they played it safe with how many died until Critters 2.Robcop 3 set on shelf for 2 years since Orion went bankrupt while studio for a hit with PG-13 rating it failed and course they blamed Fred Dekker for the film failing Robocop 1988 is what the studio gear it for younger when no sequel to Robocop they animated I actual enjoyed animated series and both TV series Robocop Prime Directives is more adult then 1993 TV series which came out the same year 3 was release TV network who got the rights to produce the show knew that network censor would complain about the show being too violent as network censor complain about Married With Children being less kid friendly and more geared for adults.Unless you had cable or satellite uncut unedited unlike local broadcast stations had to deal with censors all it would take is one phone call and a show could be dead. However the critics on Married With Children failed to get the show cancelled this was before TV rating in which the rating board would say TVG,TVPG,TV14 and course TVMA.

It's always great to see a new video from you. The argument at 22:19 is a bit strange, given that almost all "fixed hero" games work like that - you get a character, and you basically role play as them. Of course you can choose to totally ignore the predefined traits, but that's kind of the beauty of interactive medium. Thanks for showing some much needed love for the Amiga game :)

    • @Bransfiiiield
      @Bransfiiiield  11 месяцев назад +4

I get what you're saying and really I don't disagree, but I do think that Murphy/Robert is so clearly predefined - in much deeper ways than we tend to get with video game protagonists - that it's hard to let players just inhabit him and really get that 'proper' experience. The games (before today at least) tended to focus on 'ha ha gun go bang' rather than the psychological trauma of being ripped away from one's humanity in order to function as mechanised advertising for a militarised police force. And ignoring the predefined traits is exactly what I'm getting at - without those traits, he's no longer the character: the tortured soul; the manbot of fierce personal morality; the weird stalker who thinks he can be stealthy when staring at his demi-widow from his marked police vehicle on a quiet suburban street *while also being a giant robot-man*.
      In short: I have thoughts.
All that said, people are babbling on saying Rogue City gets some of this character stuff bang on, so maybe that game has finally nailed it.

No one can deal with the fact that Robocop is a tank that takes small arms fire like raindrops off a duck’s back. Rogue City has a lot to like about it, but even on easy, its version of Robocop is wearing armor made of digestive biscuits. It’s also frustrating that the enemies are so spongy they can take headshots from the auto-9 over and over.
Rogue City makes up for it with a lot of other fun things- there are accurate 3D models of locations from the first film, in fact many things are quite good visual equivalents of the film. There is investigation, dialogue options, and the game can be funny and clever, even if it does feel somewhat far off from the writing of the first film. The music is also good. Really a lot to like.

It breaks my heart a little bit to hear so many people say this new Teyon jank-fest "is a love letter to fans" "captures Robo perfectly" and while I find the game to be a fun toy, the very tall dude at ign giving it 7/10, saying there's plenty of jank but that this was "exactly what the property deserserved" also makes me sad because I think it deserves expert attention.
They got some things right in this game but the cutscenes are agony. He grows and shrinks, sometimes walks softly with his back declined and shoulders back while he seems to be doing a gentle Funky Chicken with his elbows, flapping them awkwardly with each step.
There are people who draw and animate at Teyon but there are no artists. Teyon are what happens when good, honest, hard-working plumbers and gas fitters make video games and after all the years between Terminator and this, since they have not improved their animation skills or lip-sync 1 iota and have made UE5 look like a UE3 simulator, I would suggest that making computer games is not in their cards.
Just because you studied and understand how to get it done does not mean you should do it. There are aspects of my learned skill set that suck and that one coworker or another can do so much better than me because although I've learned how to do it, I suck at it so we focus on what I'm good at. If you've been drawing and animating and making games for 17 years and they still look like this? Stop. Get help.
    TL/DR Teyon suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

These games focus so much on "Robo" that they forget about "Cop". The story needs a mystery to be solved and an investigation that carries the story, otherwise it just seems point and shoot game.

The game seems to be better than the earlier beta version I saw, looked very slow and sluggish, whereas this seems more fluid, possibly not Robocop, but hey, no one wants the walking in syrup feeling in a game :D

The line about 'Alex Murphy's afterlife isn't a setting that works for video games' is entirely true. Even on a base level as a playable game character, he's an armoured robot that shoots villains. Sounds great... except he can't run, jump or even walk at a brisk pace without looking silly.

That's a pretty dishonest representation of what is actually in the video, sometimes you just gotta take the L, man.
Come to think of it, the stark split of critical reception between press and players on Teyon's last two games would be an interesting thing to cover in of itself. Terminator Resistance was absolutely savaged by critics, but most people who played the game (myself included) found something truly excellent underneath what was clearly a very tightly budgeted release (knowing that going in perhaps helped set my expectations). Sure the animation is jank, the dialog is a bit underwritten and their games tend to arrive a little hot out the oven, but the clever pastiche of RPG and shooter game mechanics, attempts at immersive sim style reactivity as well as a general love for the original source material help make something that feels like more than some cash-in.
But it's not like the games don't have anything that truly stands out, both Robocop: Rogue City and Terminator: Resistance have absolutely wonderful environmental design and I think this is where Teyon most successfully punch above their weight. The foggy nuked cityscapes in T:R absolutely *nail* the aesthetic of the future scenes in the first two Terminator movies and the detail and design of Detroit in Robocop:RC are as good as any modern AAA title. There's the little touches too like the hacking minigame in Terminator Resistance. A frogger clone, but it's designed in such a way to make you tap the key with a "DUN DUN DUN... DUN DUN" rhythm. It might be my favourite hacking minigame; it's short, it provides a little bit of challenge but never to the point where you're spending way too much time doing it and it was instantly understandable to play.
Branching paths, detective modes, adventure game shenanigans, crafting, their games are full of all these cool little choices. Complaining about the animation is like complaining about the strings in a Sam Raimi movie, who cares when everyone is having so much fun?

What a terribly negative view on Robocop games. The first Data East game was pretty amazing for the time, and I still play both of the Arcade games from time to time. I feel it totally nailed the formula, and you can see that by how often its mimicked. It was absolutely in high demand. In fact, Robocop games continued to be best sellers on multiple computer platforms. Whats wrong with a game in the apocalyptic future where our titular character remorselessly mows down bad guys and saves damsels to save the day? Is there not enough apocalyptic humour for you?
But more over, your contention is unclear. Do you want a game where Robocop turns water into wine? Maybe he could go full Moses and part the red sea? Maybe Robert Cop could spend the majority of the game talking about his feelings? 25 minutes and 39 seconds you spent vaguely explaining why Robocop games don't get Robocop without really explaining why they don't get it. I don't get it. Robocop games before they went 3D were unconditionally great!

I offered my thoughts on why games haven't got him right towards the end, and my feelings towards the first game were largely positive (albeit not gushing). If you missed all that, it's on you not me.

They really need to dive into the satire of it. Optional skins, such as floral patterns. A PG-13 mode that makes all the guns paintball weapons and so forth. If you're going to do a Robocop game you need to lean heavily into satire. Of course, that means trusting your audience to understand that what you are doing is satire.

I disagree with this video this game is actually more faithful to the movie. It’s not a masterpiece but it’s a bigger improvement to past titles. Yes you are a walking tank do is robocop in the movies he walks slow he is a machine not a athlete on a marathon.
