Saw it for the first time in '94, at the house of the teenager who was tutoring me in math. After completing our session we would play a map together whilst sipping the honey-lemon tea his mother would make for us. I was mesmerized by the graphics, which blew away the games I'd been playing on my 486 (Duke Nukem, Sim Ant, etc.). I miss the 90s so much...

I loved this game as a young un, the atmosphere and style of the game... the concept is great... you had a mission to complete, a target and a squad of four with weaponry you choose and it was up to you how to go about achieving the mission. I remember one of the missions was an assassination of an important figure who would be escorted with his security as crowds of people stood on the paving along the roads watching.
I positioned a sniper on a bridge, then used a guy in the crowd who would pull out a minigun and spray the crowds in order to cause the security detail to stop and engage the shooter, then in the confusion I used the sniper to blow the head off the target... the other concealed minigun guy in the crowd would open fire on the security detail, backing up his mass murderer buddy and the 4th agent would follow behind the security entourage in a car to quickly scoop his team and evac them.
Or else that's how I remember the mission playing out in my mind.

  • @HansMilling

I remember the 3D graphics in Syndicate Wars as a disappointment. The original graphics were much sharper and the atmosphere and lighting was way better. Imagine if you created a 2D version of the original game, but with 4K graphics. That would be awesome.

Just some side info: When Syndicate released there was no SVGA. The graphics mode 320x200 by 256 colors was too less for a strategy game and was only used for the movie sequences and the menu. For the actual game they used 640x480 with only 16 colors. Yes you heard right: ONLY 16 COLORS

my opinion of Satellite Reign, is it's too colorful, kills the dark vibe. Modern devs can't do cyberpunk very well, they focus on the cyber part and ignore the important punk part. 90's graphical design understood grittiness and appreciated it, nowadays everything is overly cleaned up, rounded corners, soft gradients, there is no male influence on the art design.

Syndicate as a game is pretty basic and it just becomes a matter of keeping your squad together and hitting the panic button when the enemy charges at you mindlessly. Where it really shone was the atmosphere. The grimy, dangerous feeling of everything really stands out. It’s easy to see they had to leave a lot out when you read the mission briefings. They put some real depth into tactical guidance but the game doesn’t play out like it’s described.
American Revolt is a bad expansion which just ups the problems to insane levels but it’s still enjoyable to watch the absolute chaos unfold now that your enemies are packing Gauss Guns and Airstrikes. It’s hilarious that 5 seconds into some missions you have large groups of agents and civilians running around on fire everywhere.
It’s worth mentioning that the manual was awesome, in a time where manuals were great. It was a shiny black booklet with greyscale inside and it gives some cool details on the other Syndicates and the current world climate. The Aussie Syndicate running their finances on the sale of cheap lager and being bad at aiming because they’re always drunk is hilarious.

You don't do the console versions justice here. In a time where most games are stupid ports that lack identity Syndicate for SNES and Mega Drive were purposely made to suit the control style of these devices. I have played both the SNES and the PC version and they are great games in their own right and the SNES version does not lack anything. The setting, the violence, the music, the different aspects of the game, it's all there. Be glad that people on the consoles did not have to move a cursor around but could control the cyborgs themselves.
Syndicate Wars aged very badly because its game speed was somehow linked to the CPU speed. It ran badly on a friend's PC and the missions were failing within 1 second of starting it on my 1 GHz Athlon.

I disagree with your opinion on the Genesis -& Snes- port. In fact, I really liked Sega's port of the game, which allowed direct control of your agents, issuing basic orders with simple button combinations and 2-player coop. While a lot of things had to be scaled down and censored (robots instead of policemen and guards, for one), it was still fun to play and faithful enough to the original, imo.
Still, it's a good retrospective and an entertaining video, so you get a like from me. :)
EDIT: I recently got to play the Snes port and it's just *terrible* (even compared to the Genesis version). Controls are wonky, missions have loading screens (they start practically instantly on Genesis), AI is laughable (for one, robo-guards just ignore the player's agents instead of shooting them), most weapons have ridiculously nerfed ammo capacity (yet cost the same as they do in other versions), you can only persuade up to *6 people* in a mission (compared to a dozen or 2 on Genesis and basically unlimited on DOS), there are no agent commands like the ones on Genesis (Panic Mode, Guard Mode, Sleep Mode), persuaded civilians can't be armed with weapons, Flamer is renamed to Chiller (and its red effect is recolored light blue) - yet they forgot to change mission briefings that mention flame throwers,...

      @Y2Kr4SHM4N 3 года назад +1

I agree. The atmosphere is there in droves, but something is missing.
The ambient sound is terrible, where most of what you hear is fans. Fans, fans, and more fans. The sounds of the crowds, individuals, traffic and the general sounds of the city: nonexistent.
I also think the general open world felt less interesting. It would have been better if you went to your headquarters in one city, and you would fly or drive to new cities and new maps, or segmented parts of the map that felt separate, until you needed to escape, then it would open up to the wider map. Not like the four quadrants with different colour schemes, the game ultimately gave us.
It needed to be like syndicate and syndicate wars.
This mission is in an industrial area. But you won’t be stuck here. The next mission will be in downtown London, under the hammering rain, and oversized screens. Etc.

Syndicate Wars was so good, it's such a shame the series effectively died there. The only 2 improvements I'd like to see in a remake/remaster/sequel are more missions and a lot less linearity to the them. The reboot was fine for what it was doing. An actual plot and plenty of cyberpunk atmosphere. People wanted a tactical murder sim; Syndicate had something more than just tactical murder sim.
But sure, we could’ve used a proper reboot of the original concept as a whole.

XCOM 3 Apocalypse lets you play in a Pause play mode which imo is superior to the turned based element. As the XCOM style game became more complex, the maps got larger and the aliens more varied in their method of attack. The Turned Based style simply ends up becoming to cumbersome in XCOM3.

I completely forgot about the 2012 version! I'm pretty sure I own it... I feel like I have it on Origin. Gonna install Origin now and have a look.. I feel like maybe I neaerly finished the game? I wish they carried on the style of the Amiga game instead of just another FPS.

Ahhh, I remember playing the original Syndicate game to death during a blizzard (1990?). My installation played sound effects, but not music (I wouldn't know for years that the game even had music), so I would cue up "Age of Consent" by Bronski Beat while I played. The cut "Love and Money" ( ruclips.net/video/6yU3rPQJS7E/видео.html ) seemed particularly fitting.
RIP Mike, the man who introduced me to this, my favorite game of all time.

Hm... Im in the minority of ppl that really liked the 2012 game. And Im old enough to have played both the orog8nal and Wars. The first is the best bu apart from the technical sides I don't really like Wars. I would prefer the same conquer the world style as the first one and not the a semi set series of missions we got.
And 2012 Syndicate is a good shooter, completed the game a few times (like the level with the miniguns the most), had nice hacking mechsnics and interesting boss fighta. And the coop mode was also really nice. Managed to play it with mu son a few times before they close the severs in 2024.

6:35 ARE YOU KIDDING, American Revolt is one of the best expansion packs in the history of gaming!!! It's freaking amazing!
Syndicate Wars was overall pretty shit in my opinion. The 3d viewpoint was a downgrade to the brilliance that the isometric viewpoint gave. I just don't agree with this.

The game is called Satellite REIGN, not Rain.
Played for a couple of hours and it is just another generic neon cyberpunk game with no soul. Wanted to like it as a successor of the good old Syndicate, but it fell short. Way too repetitive, way to much focus on stealth and hacking, the R&R took forever to develop new stuff and the money was always in too short supply.
The biggest problem, however, is the fact that going in Syndicate style with tank-like fully augmented agents or terminators with miniguns, supressing fire by a sniper, gauss gun havoc and just annihilating any opposing firm's agents was NOT a viable option. Add to that braindead AI for both the enemy and your own troops and, way worse, the cardinal sin of ENDLESSLY spawning guards in the enclosed "mission areas" and you end up with a formula that just doesn't taste well.

I can't disagree more about this. Syndicate was a great game, but, as someone who bought pretty much every subsequent game at launch, they're all messes EXCEPT 2012. Syndicate Wars was a nightmare letdown of a clearly unfinished game. Like, I'm pretty sure there are menu UI buttons that simply do not do anything. It felt unfinished at launch and it feels unfinished today. It was a bad game that you had to play with a guide to make sure your company had enough money to actually engage with the systems.
Satellite Reign is a game I backed and ... it's not disappointing because it's not Syndicate, it's disappointing because it's systems are uninteresting and bland. Like the abducting people from the street to turn into agents but then became worse the more you respawned. Like, that you can respawn is ridiculous for a tactics game. It's a big open world game, but it feels cheap.
Syndicate 2012 was, yes, not a tactics game. But it was far from a generic shooter than you'd forget while playing. I think about that game all the time and its interesting guns and the hacking system and all that. I think about it a lot. Evidenced by the fact that I am here now. 2012 was a really cool game that actually respected the Syndicate property more than anyone gives credit for. Like everything in that game is taken from a briefing from the original syndicate. It's crazy. And the multiplayer campaign was pretty fun to play with a bunch of friends and coordinate your hacking and weapons.
I even pitched a few months before my "dream game" being a four person first person tactical shooter remake of Syndicate. Would I preferred that? Maybe, but people just hated that game because they couldn't accept it for what it was-- which was the second best Syndicate game.
