    Actually Snes street fighter’s controls are infinitely better and the people saying try at the 6 button controller isn’t right. Also the Snes music for rock and roll racing still aged well and still holds up to this day even by 1990s standards in the present and it isn’t vay

    SNES could render more unique things and had hardware support for several "tricks" as well as easy access for enhancement chips that the Mega Drive simply did not. On its own, however, the MD did have a faster processor hence "blast processing" so it was easier to load multiple assets - sometimes of the same kind - per frame than the stock SNES could. SNES games could also display many more onscreen colors than the MD which is why some arcade ports looked "more like the original" than MD. Both consoles had their own unique strengths, but the fact that the MD could hold up to the SNES despite being ~2 whole years older say a lot about its superior CPU and the game developers who knew how to work with the console.

    • @wishusknight3009
      @wishusknight3009 2 месяца назад

      "Blast Processing" was a specific DMA operation with a fancy name that the MD could do. However no games actually used it, save one or two, and a few tech demo's. It really had nothing to do with the processor being faster as the marketing would imply.

    The title slide where the Sunset Riders dude said "MONEY" super loud got a chuckle out of me, well played! As for more examples: Turtles in Time vs Hyperstone Heist: similar games, but the SNES one is undeniably better and more memorable. Better music, better colours, better levels... Honestly, I'd say it's even better than the arcade game despite the absence of the 4-player mode, worse animation and worse voice samples. That's right, I'm saying the SNES soundtrack sounds better than the arcade's. A common occurrence with Konami ports on the SNES. Konami's classic soundfont on the SNES just has an oomph to it.

      Some people said the SNES port of Turtles in Time is even better playable than the arcade original. Sure, it's a little bit downgraded to fit on the cartridge and it lacks the arcade's four player mode but it has additional levels and faster, fluid gameplay.

      @@greensun1334 After having recently tried to play the Arcade version, I very much agree. The arcade original plays like your typical arcade game: too hard for its own good, just so you spend more money on it. The SNES port is much more fair, and generally feels tighter to play. Not to mention the fact that the sound effects are much more impactful.

I remember reading games magazines about how good the snes one was but I was a sega boy through and through then I forgot about it because girls. I watched the playthrough of it just yesterday and my mind was blown. It's so good!!! If it had 2 player it would have unbalanced the world from its axis so its probably better it didn't. I'll take the Sega Genesis version of rock n roll racing over the SNES Version of rock n roll racing simply because the zoomed out camera let's players see more of the track ahead which makes racing on the track better to navigate than the zoomed in track on the SNES Version of rock n roll racing where players can't see that far ahead of the race track while racing.

    Barry Larry with my Mary! Nice to see someone driving home the whole reason Doom on the SNES would have been the more attractive offer back in the day. I knew NOONE in high school who owned a Playstation, or a Jaguar or a 32X. All of my non-PC owning friends either had a SNES or a Genesis. Doom was on the SNES, it was not on the vanilla Genesis. So for the price of a slightly more expensive SNES game, the entry level version of Doom was right there for the taking.

    MD's Rock n Roll Racing was almost universally loved in Russia and is fondly remembered. We didn't have SNES basically at all. So we were the natural test of your argument. I guess the FM sound didn't stop people after all.

    • @goranisacson2502
      @goranisacson2502 4 года назад

      That's interesting- how come Sega had a bigger presence than Nintendo in Russia? Did Nintendo not market or invest in creating a Russian market while Sega did? Or was Sega just cheaper? I heard that they outsold Nintendo in the UK because "only the rich kids had SNES" according to Brits I've talked to, but Nintendo mostly ruled here in Sweden until Sony took their crown.

    • @Vospi
      @Vospi 4 года назад +2

      @@goranisacson2502 Hey there. The reason is much simpler. In the 90s, Russia was just becoming Russia, finding itself again after being the USSR for so long. Meaning that the market was WILD WEST. With some horrible or fascinating stories to go along.
      A lot of crime, practically no interest from the outside importers (we had an iron curtain and we practically don't know English and we barely have money for leisure, meaning that only very generic goods came through, and mostly through very strange means).
      All the consoles had bootleg presence and bootleg prices (and still were kind of hard to buy for an average household).
      The pattern is "only one console per generation".
      For 8-bit, we practically only had one console: NES, and nobody knew it was called that (chinese knock-offs were the only option, and "our" cartridges looked like japanese/chinese ones). There was a tiny bit of Atari clones; older generation enjoyed a fair bit of Spectum, but there was nothing like NES. A small small small portion of Game Boy for Moscow people with money. Nobody knows Master System at all.
      Then the 16-bit generation was represented only by Sega MD. It was probably a matter of availability of pirated carts. I saw Super Nintendo maybe once in the store by that time. They existed in Russia, sure, but, once again, were out of reach and were somewhat unpopular, although our fancy magazines covered the games for them (cause they had a piece of the pie, being the owners of some stores).
      32-bit gen, in that way, was practically exclusive to Sony. Almost no N64, no Saturn outside of crazy hardcore enthusiasts, up until now. It's ridiculous to even compare at all. I never held an N64 controller in my life.
      So the competition during that time was only between generations, practically. That's why a lot of Russian casual gamers of that era would know Sonic and Tekken, but wouldn't know Smash Bros, Zelda and F-Zero, which is crazy and a situation that one probably can't imagine living in the western world where commercials and competition were much more prominent.
      Nowadays, a lot of enthusiasts know a ton, and the games are available, and the scene is bigger, and the roms are there, too. But if we were talking about the consoles in _their_ era - that's how I would describe it.
      Since PS2 vs Dreamcast, we had options and the market became more and more legitimate and valuable for the companies. Now the competition is in full swing. Although modding of the consoles by the enthusiasts is still pretty much expected, unless you're a somewhat casual gamer who earns a decent penny and does not care (which is many more people than, say, in 1998 for us).

    Disagree with Batman and Robin. Yeah the snes version certainly is a lot more batman-y but I found it to only be a serviceable game overall in gameplay, MD/Gen version definitely played and looked better plus the 2 player coop. And also disagree with Doom since yeah the 32x music sucked as did the lacking levels, but the graphics and framerate made it a lot more playable. I definitely agree with the rest here though.

    While most games listed here I agree edge out the Sega Genesis versions however I don't agree with two of the games on this list one I mentioned before which that one reason alone may slightly edge out the SNES Version but a bad camera angle placement ruins it for most players. The second is the adventures of batman & robin because the introduction of the Sega Genesis version alone speaks in volumes, the night wing stages mixes things up keeping it from being stale, and the intense gameplay challenge that keeps players on their toes doesn't feel cheap it requires players to play smarter.

    That wrestling game on the SNES version didn't use proper semi-transparent shadows and didn't even use enough colours on the ropes to avoid dithering, so even if it still wins it's clear it wasn't even taking full advantage of the SNES and could have been even better. The more animated crowd that's slightly in the shadow to make the ring and wrestlers stand out more is a nice touch only on the SNES version though.

    even as a SNES kid that became a Genesis favoring adult after roughly 2005, it pains me to agree with basically all of this list.
    Sunset Riders? It's more a semisequel/remix than anything, but SNES is still better
    SF2T? Genesis had enough CPS1 similarities to be a more direct port, much as the Neo Geo ports, but not having had a 6 button controller as late as 2000, the criticism resonates.
    Batman & Robin? I'd play the Gen game any day, but only because I've sunk so much time into memorizing it. In terms of raw accessibility, SNES wins if you must only try one.
    Doom? The SNES version was my first version of Doom so I may be biased, but I'd rather 32X Doom have no music at all (ala the otherwise great Jag version) than what we got.
    My only exception, and I truly do take exception here, is Rock 'n' Roll Racing- the FM Synth versions of most of those tracks eclipse the SNES version imo, though I am also saying that having the 2nd generation of HD Graphics model Genesis- much more specific than needing a 6-button controller. Tone-based FM Synth in the right hands can sound way more like rock than the sample-based SNES could ever dream of. No one proved that more than mostly-known-for-pinball composer Brian Schmidt in the Genesis games he did for EA, but RnRR is on an only slightly lower precipe.
    The emulated version you presented here definitely doesn't compare sonically to the most ideal possible hardware, but at the same time that's likely what most people are going to hear and I guess I just have to accept that. But either way, only Genesis does Radar Love. Sunglasses emoji.

    This is a great list, I agree completely. However, I do find the "pack in controller" argument is entirely played out... The SNES was more expensive than the MD, by about $50 (in the states). • @Bransfiiiield
      @Bransfiiiield  4 года назад +3

      While I mention having to pay extra for the extra bits, that's not really the focus of the point. The focus is that - looking at each machine as standard, what came with it out of the box - you came away better with the SNES. Ignoring money, if you bought a SNES, you had all you needed. If you bought a Mega Drive, nine times out of ten you'd need to then buy an extra controller to get the most from it. That's why the 'as standard' thing is hammered so much, not the price per se.

    I do not agree with Mortal Kombat II, I liked it on SEGA more. I give 3 examples:
    1.) In the acid-level the SEGA-version does not have chains in the foreground. I like that a lot, because you can see the characters better. In the arcade and in the SNES-version are chains in the foreground, but it does not really help while playing, it's rather disturbing.
    2.) In the SEGA-version, Scorpion's spear comes really out of his hand. In the SNES-version the spear is flying from outside the screen (behind Scorpion's back) into the screen, passes Scorpion and goes on the enemy. That is sooo stupid.
    3.) Little detail only: When a player wins in the SEGA-version, he gets a little "MK-symbol" under his health-bar. In the SNES-version it's just a stupid yellow dot. No big deal maybe, but it's stupid on SNES and somehow better on SEGA.
    BTW: I also do not agree with the "argument" of the 3-button-controller about Street Fighter. It does make the game worse. If you want to judge the game, then judge the game, not the controller. As a matter of fact, when the SEGA came out in 1989, 3 buttons was enough for everything, that was 1 button more than the NES had, remember that. And for the most games 3 buttons were okay, you needed only 1 for Sonic for example. Most games were not more than "jump" and "hit", so 2 buttons were often enough. But of course we bought the 6-buttons-controllers later for all the fighting-games only. And then I played Sonic and needed 1 out of 6 buttons.

    The 32X is not the Mega Drive (or Genesis); it is an attachment that cost basically as much as an entirely new/separate console. You couldn't play any of the original Genesis games on the 32X or play the 32X games on the Genesis without the attachment. Christ, even Wikipedia lists it separately in the console generations. So I don't think any games on the 32X can count in this list, or they certainly shouldn't imo.

      I clearly, obviously point out the 32X is different hardware. One of the main points working against the 32X version versus the SNES one is that you have to buy a 32X to play it.

    But seriously, with the SNES Turtles fighting game, why didn't they just use a few more sprites to make the head-shots on the in-game HUD full colour. Everything else looks so nice and colourful that those low colour head-shots on the HUD just stand out like a sore thumb imo.
    And the same issue crops up with the HUD in Saturday Night Slam Masters too.

    I'm a gamer which don't sides but it all depends on the developers, they are sometimes better focus on the mega drive for instance Pit fighter is better on the genesis so is earthworm jim 1 and 2 flashback better on the Genesis captain america and the avengers, Mortal Kombat, EA john madden football so is NHL better on genesis the disney games so much better on tge Genesis. So my point is that both consoles have there pros and cons. And even though developers favor more the snes all along the genesis has more potential than then snes. If im wrong take a look at the latest street fighter 2 with color correction and the Mortal Kombat arcade edition. sega had always the power but developers favor Nintendo, same thing happened in the 32 bit wars between sega and sony. Again I'm a gamer that don't take sides hust making a point! And about the Street fighter 2 on snes it may sound clear but it doesn't sound like the arcade and thats where the mega drive or genesis knocks it right out of the ball park!!!

    I hate to say it, being a SNES fanboy, but the Genesis version of Rock 'n' Roll Racing actually wins for me. The one thing better in the SNES version is the music (and the fact it doesn't get interrupted when the announcer speaks), but it just plays better on Genesis and is ultimately more fun (it runs faster/smoother, the controls are more responsive, you can read the track ahead easier, and the physics with bumping into things feels a little less frustrating and/or more forgiving for whatever reason. Also, I think the overall bolder and more contrasting colours on the cars and tracks, and the non-textured menu screens, look better in the Genesis version too. And, a tiny thing, but the shadow under the cars on the Genesis version doesn't have 4 stupid grey pixels for whatever weird reason). So, yeah, as I much as I wanted it to win, the SNES loses here imo.
    Edit: After playing both versions for longer I've changed my mind and now think the SNES version is just better overall.

      You sir, are delusional in the extreme. I've played both versions back to back. The Genesis version does not play better, the graphics don't run smoother, they look worse in every way, or any of the other nonsense you said. I might also add that it is yet another Genesis game that you need a 6 button controller to play properly.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 3 года назад

      @@davidaitken8503 It plays better in my experience, and I too played them back to back, and with both running on my SNES Classic Edition using the SNES controller too. It's just far easier to see the track ahead in Genesis because of it's extra horizontal resolution, and it seems/feels like it's running a little smoother and responding a little quicker, and the visuals do in fact look a little cleaner on Genesis due to the higher contrast and saturation and the removal of some of the textures in the menus and stuff that just make the SNES version look a little messy imo. Put it like this, I removed the SNES version from my SNES Classic Edition and replaced it with the Genesis version--and that says it all for me.

I used to play the SNES version with my brother in 2 player split screen just fine. You occasionally glance at the map to know what corner is coming up. The scrolling is exactly the same in both because instead of using the built in scrolling cycles of the systems it is basically updating the background based on the position of your car.
