Yes, I read it in an interview long ago, and that combined with my knowledge of Japanese, made perfect sense. And I know what you mean, I also speak Spanish (I'm from Belgium, but we go on vacation to Spain a lot so I decided to learn Spanish too, to make life easier when we are over there LoL), your double R like in perro sounds unlike anything else, also the G (which sounds more like our K), and we don't even have a native sound for your J LoL. Slap Fight MD reminds me of Xevious. You'd better hope Classic Game Room doesn't hear you dissing his precious Truxton. He'll beat you with a Game.com!
haha that ending I never laughed so hard at one of those XD Man yeah the Genesis had some really great shooters... Gunstar Heroes (since it was mentioned) being my all-time favorite genesis game! Truxton was also great, I did like the music in it. (shame the sequel only ever came out on the Japan-only FM Towns Marty) I did have Sol-Feace on the SEGA CD it was pretty good too. I never realized Slap Fight MD was remixed by Yuzo Koshiro I may have to add that to my collection!
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
Thanks for tracking down all these games. You covered a rare title I only got to play once but was so addicted to back when i was a kid. Recovered some nostalgic memories. :)
+jcchaconjr I think cause its been mentioned a gazillion times already. Most shmuppers already know its awesome. Id rather hear about the more obscure , hidden games.
Back in the old days, Sega used to make a big deal about how much memory their games had. They used it in their marketing quite often and to me, it was quite amusing. So a game with 8 MEGA POWER would be 8 megabits or one megabyte. It was always something that I used back in high school to show how much better Sega was than Nintendo. Yeah, I was an ass. Actually, I still am!
Thank you for saying "back in the old days" I hate it when British people, for instance, who never used the term "back in the day" until "the day" had been over for a decade or two say it that way. "The day" we are talking about on these things usually predates the term "back in the day" i.e. it (that phrase) was invented in the ninties, and British people, and allot of other people in this world first heard it in the late ninties or after, so it's pretty awkward that that is now so universal. It wouldn't be a problem if people said that every now and again, but one gets the impression that some people don't know any other way to express "in the past" other than that phrase. Like, what "day" do *they* mean? Back when they wore futuristic sunglasses and tight shirts and bumped ghetto blasters and had processed hair as opposed to baggy clothes and athletic gear? Because that's what that term was invented to describe, a major shift in black American culture, not to make it about race, buuut...I mean, I was there, we used to say things like that ironically to draw attention to the contrast, that was the funny part. Now people act like it's the only way to express that idea...I mean, I certainly can't imagine they think it's hip, it's about as hip as "the bomb" If the first time you hear "street slang" is from a middle aged womans beauty program or a twelve year old it's probably already over.
Idk why, but the extremely corny "acting" you learned from the "Game Sack School of Acting" is one of my favorite parts of the show. "That's exactly right, Cory." :p I love this show and I love your personalities. You guys are hilarious and have great chemistry. Keep the content coming
My collection of Genesis shoot em ups recently grew a bit. I now have Thunder Force II and IV, Galaxy Force II, and Truxton. I'm thinking of trying to track down Sol-Deace.
The attraction of Xenon 2 Megablast appears to have been rooted entirely in its awesome soundtrack on the Amiga; the port to the Mega Drive/Genesis cut the one element worth talking about in the game, while even on the Amiga, instruments cut out whenever you fired your weapon.
This is a genre that continues to interest me the most, and it's cool to keep learning something new or seeing a game I never heard of before. Love the episode and agreed, the ending is great.
Trouble shooter, hell yeah!!!!! I used to play this when i was a little boy and now after months of searching, finally, i found it. Thanks a lot Game Sack :)
Ah man I cant believe you guys said arrow flash was an average shooter it was the only one i ever liked. I was so looking forward to an in-depth look from Game Sack. I will be posting a video responce as soon as I figure out how to edit a video. Love the videos you guys make keep it up and the delivery is so wooden ---------- love it. Thanks for the amazing content
I think my favorite Genesis Shooter is Arrow Flash. There is just something about the intro and the soundtrack that just keeps making me come back to play it after all these years
Battle Squadron together with SWIV (which is also originally on Amiga) and Xenon 2 are some of the best shooters you could get on a homecomputer... but maybe not on a japanese console.
Actually that was in the montage with quite a few other games, but I took it out when I drew the line on what I wanted to include. I kept including more and more games and eventually I would have had to include every game in which the player fired a shot. So I took games like Granada, Twinkle Tale, Star Cruiser, AH3 Thunderstrike and more out.
OK, I saw this vid twice just to make sure and I could not find Granada, which is made by the same folks as Sol Deace/Feace (26:26). Granada was a top-down 'free-directional' shooter. One controls a tank (shields, fast firing guns and a blaster cannon) and the goal in each stage was to search and destroy a # of key enemies (highlighted in one's radar) before one could confront the boss. Time was limited. Check Granada right here on RUclips for gameplays, reviews and it's soundtrack. My thoughts? I liked it. Graphics where alright, nothing fancy. But there was variety. Soundtrack was good. If set on the hardest difficulty, it will be a challenge. Bosses where a bit of a mixed bag: some where lame, some awesome and some where tricky. Power-ups where few (Cube, Missiles, Disk, Bomb, Sphere and a Secret power-up) but neat and useful if used right. Best thing was it's content and enemy variety: 9 levels where one can go where one wants, it did had a replay advantage over the more linear shooters I thought.
Thanks for putting together this vid by the way. Shooters and Herzog Zwei pretty much dominated the time I spent with my Genesis back in the day. Sadly, there's no 'Sega Shooter compilation' out there. Not to my knowledge. Peace.
You two are the WHACKIEST Gaming dudes on the fucking planet!!! Love your show!!! I can't believe this is EPISODE 60!!!!! Keep it up and never stop with the "Scripted" Dialogue!!! It is SO hilarious!! You guys are nothing but FUN, FUN FUN gamer dudes to the extreme!!! ^_^
After watching this a few times over, I can say with confidence the "... 6 I think... Wait, no... 7! We've covered 7!" Is my favourite part of the video. Shooters are probs my most cherished genre and boy, did I miss out growing up on the Super Nintendo!
Some 16-bit covers really did have varying degrees of a WTF factor to them (Phalanx on SNES comes to mind), so I wouldn't have been surprised if the US Gaiares cover actually did look like that. That was hilarious. Great work as always, guys.
The Genesis does have some great shooters. Love the Thunder Force series. Actually just picked up a repro card with TF 2, 3, and 4 on one cart and they all play and sound amazing! I was an idiot and sold my originals along with Gaiares when I sold my Genesis to upgrade to "superior" next-gen hardware. Boy, was that a mistake. I think Biohazard Battle is also underappreciated. Love the music and style of that game. I also do love Star Wars Arcade. It is an amazingly faithful port of the arcade with more features and Soul Star is AMAZING! The graphics, sound, and variety of gameplay crammed into Soul Star are something to behold.
Bit disgusted with the showcase on Hellfire, okay you don't care for the game, but you could at least show the intro to the first stage in 60Hz, that music is pure bangin'!
***** Actually if you play Hellfire on a Genesis with the sound chip built into an ASIC (not a true discrete YM2612) the music will be a lot slower even with the US version of the game on NTSC hardware running at NTSC speeds. Hellfire is an odd game that relies on a glitch in the YM2612 for its music. The other chips (mostly in model 2 hardware) fix that glitch and the music plays really slow.
Game Sack Never had any knowledge on that, but good to know if I ever pick up an NTSC Mega Drive. I only have a PAL system (two Mk.1's in fact) and a PAL copy of Hellfire, but I've emulated the NTSC version. Also played the original arcade version which is probably superior in gameplay, especially since it has a 2 player option, but the music is not quite as good IMO.
Super Airwolf has the classic TV tune and some hilarious zoomed in-action sections where you massacre helpless troops on the ground! Great episode guys, thankyou!
I believe you're looking for Road Avenger. That's in Episode 29, Four Underrated Games. The link is in the Game Sack Episode Guide. You can get to the Episode Guide by clicking a link in the description of this or any of our videos.
Empire Of Steel on the Mega Drive was one of my childhood favourites (Steel Empire for those in the States). Huge love for the Master System version of shooters R Type and Fantasy Zone too.
Shoot em ups were never my thing growing up playing video games. I've recently started playing them and I enjoy the heck out of them, but they are so damn difficult.
I just grabbed Task Force Harrier, would never have really known about it without this show. Thanks! Glad I picked it up, was fair market value not a steal, but I love vertical shooters and am glad to have another. Graphics are samey for a lot of the game, but I was actually pleasantly surprised at the weapon variations for ground targets and air targets; most games have it where every weapon hits every enemy type. I'm from Canada and just got back into Sega a few months ago and am very surprised how hard it is to come across genesis games versus NES/SNES games like I am used to.
Bubble And Squeak (brilliant game!) Has a great SHMUP bonus. You have to find the craft in the levels to access it. Not many ppl know about this game (same with Flink). Bubble And Squeak is a super fun platformer where you team up with an AI buddy to get through the levels. The graphics, music and playability are top notch.
Fantastic episode along with a nice list of games for me to check out for the Genesis. I like that you went back to your roots in this episode vs. the last one.
I had to draw the line somewhere otherwise I'd have to include every game where the player fired a shot! So as far as the "into the screen" stuff goes I just limited it to 3rd person stuff, that's why Thunderstrike (which you chose to mention Sewer Shark over, poor Thundersrtike) didn't make it. I didn't even include all of the 3rd person stuff. That stuff was extra.
Yes, we'd love to cover a lot of different genres in a similar way. Don't know if we could dedicate a beat 'm up episode to any particular system, though.
Hey Game Sack!!!!! Could you please put each games title in small writing on the edge throughout all of the gameplay of each game? That way i always know what game you are talking about without having to jump back and try and catch the title screen or when you say the name. Thanks! I'm getting old and forgetful........and I complain a lot
Thunder Force IV is the BEST 16-bits horizontal shooter ever made!!! the music is absolute incredible, amazing graphics, it's hard like no one, and the ending is the most epic ever!. If a day I woke up surrounded by the all sega stuff, I will scream too...for the happiness! Great selection,
My aunt got me Biohazard Battle for my birthday, I remember thinking I was going to hate it since I never heard of it. But I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still have that copy and it's one of my most favorite shoot em ups on the Genesis.
A friend and I used to play one of these Megadrive shoot em ups and I can't remember the name of it! All I can remember is that it was a side scroller and had an in level shop you could fly into to upgrade your ship.
Great video! There were games there like Trouble Shooter, Space Turtleship and Gadget Twins which i never knew they even existed on the Megadrive/Genesis.Thanks guys.
I had some shoot 'em ups I liked growing up, sure...Sky Shark (NES), Life Force (NES), U.N. Squadron (SNES), Tiger Heli (NES), Phalanx (SNES) and Gradius III (SNES) come to mind. I just always felt like if you've played one, you've played them all. All of these were bought for me as gifts at one point or another. I never really sought them out. I also never had a Genesis until well after the PS1 was out and it seems like a lot of the really stellar ones were on that console, so maybe things would've been different if I'd had earlier access to the console.
I have added a link to the Game Sack Episode Guide in the description that will give you this information and more. We'll eventually add the link to all of our videos.
Man, I wish they made an action figure of Bari-Arm- that, along with Imperium on the SNES are probably the best video game robots ever designed in my eyes, along with Veigues Tactical Gladiator.
Great video guys. Love playing shoot em ups. Just picked up Lightning Force. Can't wait to play it. I know it's not genesis related but I also picked up Darius Gaiden on the Saturn. Great game.
Fire Shark looks VERY similar to a Taito arcade game that I saw as Sky Shark. So I did some research. Sky Shark (also called Flying Shark) was also developed by Toaplan, but it was published by Taito. The more you know! I guess after some success they were able to self publish rather than having to go through Taito.
I have the PC Engine CD version of Hellfire (which is a bit different and called Hellfire S the Another Story) but it looks and sounds rather poor compared to the Mega Drive version. Sure it has 2 players option but that's not enough to compensate. And, as others already pointed out, Truxton and Aero Blasters are also better on Mega Drive! Others than that, quite good video.
Granted I've never been disappointed with an episode of your show, but this one has to be one of the best episodes, if not THE best episode yet. Please keep up the great work gentlemen (and Jen too). With that said, I'm surprised you didn't mention Wings of Wor (Gynoug) being made by Masiya, the same developers of the Cho Aniki series on the PC Engine, hence the coolness/weirdness of the enemy designs. *sigh* I really do miss the 16-bit era...man, that was the best time to be a gamer!
I always love your guys episodes....no joke...you guys are the best because you give fair evaluation of each game you review. I mean you tell us the good things and then mention any bad things that might get a player upset. Whenever I hear your review I can accurately make a decision whether or not I want to own the game......isn't that the most important aspect of game owning & playing?
ONe of the reasons that I think Game Sack is just CLASSIC is because of the humor and the drab comedy the guys add to the show. It's COMICAL, serious and very informative for gamers and for the Retro-gamers from the old school. The reviews are funny, slick, and ingenius!! Keep doing what you do guys!!!! Love your show!!!
It's also very profession yet at the time genuine and natural.
The Genesis has awesome sound!
Yes the Sega Genesis does have good sound. But nintendon't have a chance against Sega.
Yes it does. I didn't really like it when I first got my Genesis but it definitely grew on me
The Sega CD games that layered the CD audio onto the on-board sound very much hold up. Was just playing the hell out of Road Rash yesterday, most 90s experience this month.
Every game here was played on a real system. We rarely use emulators and when we do they're usually for arcade games.
Real *system* sure ...real software?
Game Sack how do you get rid of the cram dots in games like afterburner 2 and burning force? Are you using a mega sg?

No lie.
nope, it is pronounced Gaiales, as in no more Gaia (like life vs lifeless), coz in the story, the earth is dead...
@@mazonemayu nop. Japanese don't use the L sound in their pronunciation. So, you should pronounce an R.

My collection of Genesis shoot em ups recently grew a bit. I now have Thunder Force II and IV, Galaxy Force II, and Truxton.

Shoot em ups were never my thing growing up playing video games. I've recently started playing them and I enjoy the heck out of them, but they are so damn difficult.
this vireo helped me find a game ive been trying to remember the name of for years. Thank you cant wait too play me some phelios!
Gaiares, musha and thunder force 4 are my favorite shoot Em ups
Fantastic episode along with a nice list of games for me to check out for the Genesis. I like that you went back to your roots in this episode vs. the last one.
I think it's time for a second Genesis shoot-em-up episode, focussing on the lesser known and the 'B' games.
Arnold Palmer Golf is the greatest 16-bit golf game. Change my mind.
Yeah it's in here!
Yes, we'd love to cover a lot of different genres in a similar way. Don't know if we could dedicate a beat 'm up episode to any particular system, though.
Steel Empire is amazing.
That Godfather's Joke was pure GOLD😂😂😂😂
the genesis/megadrive has so many great shooters it cant be beaten even by the mighty pc engine
Excellent video as always! I love these "catalogue" style vids. Keep em' coming!
It's been so long now with only Joe and the higher production values and him being more comfortable doing it. A part 2 would be bad ass
Great selection,
This vid was awesome. I played that Trouble Shooter game after I saw this video and it was a very fun game!
My aunt got me Biohazard Battle for my birthday, I remember thinking I was going to hate it since I never heard of it. But I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still have that copy and it's one of my most favorite shoot em ups on the Genesis.
Mine too. It's one of my favorites, glad to see another fan
A friend and I used to play one of these Megadrive shoot em ups and I can't remember the name of it! All I can remember is that it was a side scroller and had an in level shop you could fly into to upgrade your ship.
1. Lightening Force lV
2. Gaiares
3. Hellfire
4. Musha
5. Vapor Trail
My Top 5 Genesis Shmups.
What about the fps on the genesis, BLOODSHOT/ BATTLE FRENZY and ZERO TOLERANCE? Would love to see you guys talk about those games.
Joe and Dave: epic episode. One of the best shoot em up videos on you tube.
Great video! There were games there like Trouble Shooter, Space Turtleship and Gadget Twins which i never knew they even existed on the Megadrive/Genesis.Thanks guys.
Like "Gunstar Heroes", "Dynamite Headdy" also had some side-scrolling shooter stages 'for whatever reason'. ;)

Uhhh, I'm not the only one that sees that, right?
Phillip Marlowe lol
CecilMcW00t That explains so much.
oh man you guys sketches are the best. Laughing out loud here
Dave's "disbelief" on the skit was a perfect example of Game Sack
Sparkster on the SNES had a shmup stage and it was pretty cool (awesome music too). Did the Megadrive Sparkster have it too?
Lol great ending guys. Genesis does what nintendon't!
Had to make a quick adjustment. And of course that meant re-exporting, re-encoding, re-uploading and re-processing the entire video. Fun times.
I have added a link to the Game Sack Episode Guide in the description that will give you this information and more. We'll eventually add the link to all of our videos.
They have the Death Star in the background for Burning Force!
Man, I wish they made an action figure of Bari-Arm- that, along with Imperium on the SNES are probably the best video game robots ever designed in my eyes, along with Veigues Tactical Gladiator.
what about the Strike series (Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike)?
mike beck Desert strike was a bomb
Well my most favorite shoot'em ups on Genesis Arrow Flash, Thunder Force 2 and 3, Darius 2, Dangerous Seed, Space Invaders 91, Burning Force and Musha
Wow. Just wow. So thorough. This video is awesome. Great job guys.
AND I'm now watching this video for about the tenth time. Awesome.
Just slated one of my childhood games, cuts deep man 😂
Holy shit, you guys' videos are always so complete. Love it.
All I need are Adventurous Boy and Thunderbolt 2! Can anyone give tips/help finding them?
OMG I can't believe it, this is....
Genius!!
