I moved across country to the east coast for grad school and watching this reminds me of the good times watching Sunday Game Sack episodes. Thanks guys for helping with my homesickness. :)
Darius Twin was the very first SNES game I ever bought, back in the day, and when I rebought a SNES a few years ago, it was the first game I picked up with it. Love that game.
Nice to see Darius Twin finally get a little love and Imperium too. Two games I feel are a touch underrated. As far as other SNES shooters ( and I'm trying to avoid anything you guys covered in the previous episode ) I would say check out Macross Scrambled Valkyrie - one of the best on the system. Flying Hero. Acrobat Mission. Cotton 100%. Spriggan Powered. Cosmo Gang the Video. Super EDF ( < not sure if you covered that already).
[Coury] earlier in the year when we did a video our favorite first level music themes from 8 and 16 bit games, Darius Twin would have been number 6. Absolutely amazing tune and honestly, the only real reason i own the game. Also, amazing ending skit.
"Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie" for the Super Nintendo is one of my favourites! If you guys ever decide to do a part 3, you should check it out!
I don't think Gamesack is boring. I like learning about games that I didn't get the chance to play while looking at gameplay. The dry humor is perfect for this style of video game retrospective. There's also some genuinely funny moments on Gamesack.
Oh, thank goodness you made a volume two. I was going to have a meltdown because you guys missed a few in the first episode. Phew! I almost had to swallow a whole Bottle of happy pills because you guys missed my favorite game. Thanks a million guys. LMFAO
I'm addicted to Game Sack. Please keep making videos. The Musha bit at the end was awesome! Out of these SNES schmups, I feel like the only ones I would want are the one with the 2 Unlimited soundtrack and Aero Fighters.
Hi awesome Game Sack friends! I just finished a late night session of Destiny and, much to my extreme pleasure, saw that you once again uploaded an award-winning video! Your internet episodes are the extreme enjoy, and as always they cause my bowels to really loosen up and get things rolling! Sometimes while I'm driving and I'm far away from a safe dumping zone, I envision my internal septic system being governed by the all-time greatest of all greats Super Nintendo Entertainment System CPU, so that when things get heavy and my guts are full of sprites, the action slows down just enough to get me where I have to be to make a clean bombing run without soiling myself. If I find myself in a small enough bathroom with just the right acoustics, I can even emulate the famous SNES reverb with my violent movements! Life is great, isn't it? Hope all is well, friends!
+royalguard56 Speaking of award winning........This short story is full of enjoy and when I am enjoying such things my bowels start to move like yours do with a good episode of Game Sack. It is time for me to void my colon and I thank you for the catalyst.
@@tetrisdave this comment was only more excellent enjoy, by the commode 7 scaling and rotating of the background while I megaforce my special pod and scramble a valkyrie with my power up and screen clearing attacks
You guys are great! I love that you've put more work into writing some humor into your scripts, and the short escapades at the end of your videos. Keep it up.
There's a good deal of Japanese-exclusive SNES shooters out there where you MIGHT be able to make a third episode. Two that come to mind instantly are Rendering Ranger (R2) and Macross Scrambled Valkyrie. I'm sure one or both of these has been covered in previous episodes under different categories, but the latter is especially a classic.
Strike Gunner for me is one of the best schmups on the system. The bosses have weaknesses to certain sub weapons, some sub weapons also make certain stages easier too. It's also got good music, good sound and is really satisfying to play multiplayer for a schmup on the same screen at the same time! And done well!
Nice! The XE-1 AP bit at the end was pretty sweet, it's a little-known accessory by Dempa that worked on the Genesis as well as some Japanese home computers of the time. I'd actually like to see maybe a mini-episode about it, since it actually does make the games it works in very different thanks to its analogue controls. After Burner II (both the standard Genesis and 32x versions) is massively improved with it. It would be interesting to see how it controls with standard titles, as well!
+Ruko Michiharu hmm i honestly don't remember what my first shooter was. maybe galaga? or zaxxon? either way out of all the games in this video aero fighters intrigued me the most.
racerxgundam It's pretty cool! But NOBODY EVER talks about it >o> (Not the SNES version at least, everybody only talks about the Neo Geo sequel) I think you should give it a try, at least emulate it, it's fun!
Great episode guys ! I have a suggestion for an episode : Why don't you do an episode comparing Japanese box art vs Us box art (or Euro)? The difference between the 2 is sometimes staggering. Keep up the good work !
After a horrible night walking god knows how many miles home in the cold and dark to find I lost my keys and had to break in to my home at 6:30 in the morning waking my neighbours up!! It's such a pleasant feeling to sit in bed will a bowl of sweet porridge with the Game Sack boys taking about my fave genre on my fave console. :)
Aero Fighters IS a game that really sticks with me. Such an amazing game for it's time. Also there's 8 different jets in the game. 2P side had different fighters than 1P side from the 4 countries you can choose from.
I also liked stg, had fun trying out all the different weapons and figuring out what was best for each level. This and 2 players was enough for me to really enjoy it.
You left out the coolest part of STG- the ability to combine planes with players 1 and 2. There's also the strategy behind picking the sub-weapons: some are significantly more powerful than others, so they need to be saved until the later levels. It's by no means a fantastic shooter, but there's some great ideas that should really be revived.
Damn you guys...another awesome video?? I was busy watching UFC and Rhonda Rousy get her head kicked into oblivion last night when I saw this was posted. I paused the long overdue ass kicking just so I could watch this..And it was well worth it!!!! You guys inspire me to explore games/systems I've never played before! As always, thanks!!!
Thank you for helping me figure out what shooter I played when was a kid that transitioned between hi/low altitude!! Never was able to find out what it's name was! 17:05 - We apologize. Those responsible have been sacked!!!
Have I ever mentioned how I love it how early you guys post your videos for us night owls, and also I was wondering if I could suggest a topic for a future video, local co-op Genesis/SNES games?
I know tiny phalanx was not a snes title but when I discovered this game hidden in Zero Divide, I've actually play more of the tiny phalanx than the actual game I bought for lol. I can still remember the music for the mini game.
+H Koizumi Agreed. I actually purchased Zero Divide just for Tiny Phalanx and still listen to it's (tiny?) OST to this day. The level 1 song is especially awesome IMHO.
Aero Fighters is a great game, and when you play on player 2 you get 4 diferent plains with diferent weapons. I realy prefer USA on Player 2 than the player 1.
Glad you guys mentioned Biometal. I reviewed it on my show last season. One important mechanic you guys glossed over was the cancel mechanic which allows you to pull your shield in at a quicker pace. This speeds up attacks. I actually preferred 2 Unlimited's tracks over the Japanese OST, personally.
Awesome vid, I love Darius Twin (the whole series really) and the Sonic Wings series is great too, especially the sequels on the Neo Geo and Saturn. There are plenty of Parodius games on the SuFami that are all a lot of fun, my favorite on the system is probably still Area 88 though, for whatever reason I just really love that game.
Glad you guys finally covered Aerofighters. I loved that game growing up, and oddly it was the only shmup I owned as a Genesis/SNES owner. When I got to highschool a friend and I would play co-op all the time through the network mode of Snes9x in java class on our own computers...great memories. As the end of the video neared I was wondering if you were even going to mention it, being I never remember it being covered despite seeing all your videos as a subscriber from literally your first video on as I was a new 3DS owner and looking for all the content on it that I could find. Very glad to see how your channel has grown, and I would love to see you overtake the likes of someone like AngryJoe in subscriber count one day. Good luck Joe and Dave, thanks for all the fantastic content over the years, I truly appreciate your efforts.
My favorite shmup on the SNES is easily Axelay. The others I've played aren't horrible but Axelay is the only really good one to me. It really works to the advantage of the SNES hardware.
I know you guys covered Axelay in episode 33, but I wanted to mention it again so people can check it out. An exclusive shooter from Konami and it's really good. Definitely a hidden gem!
watching the footage of hunt for red october actually made me feel motion sick and that has never happened in my 25yrs of gaming. I must be getting old :p
Sadly I didn't play alot of SNES shooters. I only played Darius Twin, Gradius III, Super R-Type, Axelay and UN Squadron. Out of those 5 I preferred Axelay and UN Squadron, which was already covered in your Anime to Video Game segment. Kick ass episode Game Sack. Another funny as hell ending. \,,/
+moviemetalhead Area 88 (UN Squadron) was my favourite too. Super Aleste is good and Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is worth picking up too.
Awesome episode as always guys, but I think the reason we did not see more shooters on the SNES was because of the slower speed of the CPU on the SNES.
Since Dave apparently has no friends (not even Joe) to play games with, I should mention one of the most unique features of Strike Gunner that he didn't mention is that in 2 player mode, both ships can merge together into two forms to fight together which is neat :) .
IDK why but i thought this was going to be about super scope games. not big on them but was still gonna watch it, upon realizing what its about im super stoked. GAME SACK RULES !!!!
If there are games I hate that's shoot-em-ups, driving games, sport games and [video] pinballs. But I love your videos. That being said TurboGrafx16/PC Engine has some goddamn good overhead shooters that I would even play myself. And I repeat: I hate shooters.
love the self defeating humor. 'maybe you like boring stuff like watching game sack' haha. yes I do like watching game sack. keep up the good work guys.
Good stuff guys. It's a shame you still missed out Macross. That really is a kick arse shooter for the SFC. Still, it was funny to see many stinkers on there this time.
Aero Fighters is a game that sticks with me, I have very fond memories of playing it in the arcade along with Raiden. The only thing I don't like about it is that your most powerful shot downgrades after using it for only a few seconds, and you can't continue where you died on the last level.
I love STG it replaced twin cobra on nintendo for me when it came out. I liked the sub weapon deal it was fun and once you play through you can breeze through on a second playthrough with the perfect sub weapon for the mission
I think it's worth mentioning that in Aero Fighers/Sonic Wings, the 2nd player has its own unique type of weapons and bombs and a different character. I've always liked playing as the girl from Japan. I think she has the time stop bomb.
Great episode as allways. You guys make my Sunday hangovers more bearable. I think the only good ones you left were Pop'n TwinBee and the imports Choujikuu Yousai Macross - Scrambled Valkyrie and Maerchen Adventure Cotton 100%, both great, specially the Macross game. Then there is Rendering Ranger, since half of the game is an horizontal shmup I would qualify it as shoot'em up, and it's the best part of the game and one of the better the system has, I'd said. EDIT oh, and there is that game with a flying egg, Flying Hero, that's a good one.
24:40 - 24:55 They... read my mind. I forgot that there was a "2" at the end of the title and wondered why Space Megaforce was being ignored though a part of me figured it was due to the insane prices it goes for these days.
I really liked Strike Gunner STG, the 1st SNES shoot 'em up video actually helped me find that game even though it wasn't included in it. A friend of mine rented in way way back in the 1990s, and for years, decades, we tried to remember the name of it. Watching the previous SNES shoot 'em ups episode I looked for it, didn't see it, but went over a list of SNES shooter games, omitting the games from that previous episode, I managed to figure out what game it was. (then I looked it up on eBay) I was pretty happy to find it. I don't dislike the 'more bland' back grounds, as they seem adequately realistic, and while they could go longer before looping, I also enjoy the music tracks. (but the visuals are best when you get into space) The planes that appear to be flying backwards, technically should be flying slower than the players plane/space ship vehicle, considering the assumed distance from the ground, the ground wouldn't appear to be moving as fast as a closer object, so it would be a probable reason for the illusion of flying backwards. For me, what I really liked about the game was the two player option, and the mix of weapons. The Shield is a good one, I believe the megabeam weapon (if you save it's full power and don't use it until the end of the level) can take out the final boss in one shot. Some of the weapons (anything with Sonic in the name) are also good for destroying enemy shots before they hit you, and automatic targeting weapons also make for good choices in some levels. The Nuke is also very useful against some enemies, like the satellite that fires lasers at mirrors. I found it to be good as a one player game, but I really like it as a two player game especially when both players pick different weapons with different strengths. Very cool episode, and thanks to the last SNES shoot 'em ups episode, I found a game I had been looking for, for over 20 years.
Did you talked about SDF Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie in another episode?, i noticed it wasn't mentioned here or in the recomended video at the end. It's one of my favorites games on the Snes.
PS, that Genesis controller looks cool, but I fancy the almighty original 3 button arcade stick. One day, if I'm lucky, I may be able to steer THE TANK. Godspeed Dane. Miss ya buddy.
Game Sack has quickly become my favorite game series. I always look forward to new ones, and I love re-watching old ones.
I just wanna say that one of the things that keeps me hooked to this excellent channel is the humor. At 5:48 and 7:08 I'm dying. Keep it up!
The music is outstanding in that game
I can't think of anything better than getting home and finding there's a new episode of Game Sack!
...maybe that's why I'm single...
Thanks!
Thank you! :D
Nice to see Darius Twin finally get a little love and Imperium too. Two games I feel are a touch underrated. "Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie" for the Super Nintendo is one of my favourites! If you guys ever decide to do a part 3, you should check it out!
i love the way you guys present everything. you guys have my favorite show on RUclips. i look forward to it all week. keep up the good work
That Hunt for Red October game reminds me a lot of In The Hunt, one of my favorite side shooters.
Classic Sunday morning here in the UK, Giant mug of tea watching game sack.......perfect xD
"Hunt For Red October" made me think of a new episode idea...."Games That Require Game Genie To Complete" LOL
DvdXploitr omg its the el hyphen guy
I don't think Gamesack is boring. I like learning about games that I didn't get the chance to play while looking at gameplay. The dry humor is perfect for this style of video game retrospective. There's also some genuinely funny moments on Gamesack.
All I had for SNES shooters were UN Squadron and Gradius III
I think I made out pretty well.
Oh, thank goodness you made a volume two. I was going to have a meltdown because you guys missed a few in the first episode. Phew! I almost had to swallow a whole
Bottle of happy pills because you guys missed my favorite game. Thanks a million guys. LMFAO
Ah, another sack-satisfying episode. My sack is full of gaming goodness and should last for another week.
I'm addicted to Game Sack. Please keep making videos. The Musha bit at the end was awesome! Out of these SNES schmups, I feel like the only ones I would want are the one with the 2 Unlimited soundtrack and Aero Fighters.

I agree with you guys, Aero Fighters is awesome. I remember playing the arcade version during breaks at an old tech support job I had. Good times!
That controller at the end made it look like Musha was being played with a mouse and the ship is the mouse cursor.
Nothing makes a Sunday better than a big bit of sack.
R-Type 3 was my favorite Snes shooter. Damn I Miss my SNES.
Hunt for red October was a game me and by grandpa played together a lot. He loved the super scope so much
One of the most entertaining video from you guys! Keep it up! Killed me with the STG joke!
+Robert Wilson I'll give those a look sometime. Thanks.
My favorite SNES shooter is Firepower 2000. I wanted to share my like for the game so much it was my first RUclips video review to boot.
5:22 Joe thinks Game Sack is boring? But it so exciting with dem jokes and audible enthusiasm.
+Zeldas Champion dat audible~~
Awesome episode as always guys, but I think the reason we did not see more shooters on the SNES was because of the slower speed of the CPU on the SNES.

Another fine episode, gentlemen. Thanks for making it/them!
One of the best parts of this episode was the lack of calling the games "shmups."
Darius doesn't have any slowdown when run on an Snes?! Did Nintendo and Taito jam a Sega Genesis into the cart somehow? ;)
IDK why but i thought this was going to be about super scope games. not big on them but was still gonna watch it, upon realizing what its about im super stoked. GAME SACK RULES !!!!
So happy that you did Aerofighters, I still have my original copy! I could never bring myself to sell it though.
Nice one guys, pure class as always :) Love your vids, they're the best part of my Sunday's :)
+Æro Thank You!
"Joe made me say that"- I laughed out loud :-D

24:40 - 24:55 They... read my mind. I forgot that there was a "2" at the end of the title and wondered why Space Megaforce was being ignored though a part of me figured it was due to the insane prices it goes for these days.
SNES - no shmups
TurboGrafx - Only shmups, no other genre need apply
I really liked Strike Gunner STG, the 1st SNES shoot 'em up video actually helped me find that game even though it wasn't included in it.
A friend of mine rented in way way back in the 1990s, and for years, decades, we tried to remember the name of it.
Watching the previous SNES shoot 'em ups episode I looked for it, didn't see it, but went over a list of SNES shooter games, omitting the games from that previous episode, I managed to figure out what game it was.
(then I looked it up on eBay)
I was pretty happy to find it.
I don't dislike the 'more bland' back grounds, as they seem adequately realistic, and while they could go longer before looping, I also enjoy the music tracks.
(but the visuals are best when you get into space)
The planes that appear to be flying backwards, technically should be flying slower than the players plane/space ship vehicle, considering the assumed distance from the ground, the ground wouldn't appear to be moving as fast as a closer object, so it would be a probable reason for the illusion of flying backwards.
I know its Too Unlimited, but the song at 18:11 sounds like the Mortal Kombat movie theme by The Immortals.
Did you talked about SDF Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie in another episode?, i noticed it wasn't mentioned here or in the recomended video at the end. It's one of my favorites games on the Snes.
I like how you gave me the time to tell my computer screen what i thought of the game.
PS, that Genesis controller looks cool, but I fancy the almighty original 3 button arcade stick. One day, if I'm lucky, I may be able to steer THE TANK. Godspeed Dane. Miss ya buddy.
I'll always watch Game Sack! You guys got me through the monotony that was getting 100% on Watch_Dogs! ♥
shoot 'em ups are one of my fave types of games :D
