    Graphics programmer here developing an in-house engine and SDK from scratch that supports the Sega Dreamcast (among others). I work for AMD on the DirectX12 team, working with AAA games. The general trade-off between the two tends to be texture quality and hardware-based effects versus polygon count. The PS2 had limited VRAM 4MB vs DC's 8MB (plus 8:1 hardware texture compression), and especially during the first half of the PS2's lifetime, it really, really showed. Unfortunately, even though the DC's PVR2 GPU could actually render more polygons than the DC can do, the problem is that vertices on the Dreamcast also eat up VRAM. You cannot get much above 3-4 million polygons on DC without running out of texture space, so it just can't quite compete with the PS2's raw polygon count. Finally, PS2 lacked a lot of hardware effects like anti aliasing, progressive scan (for the most part) that really added a lot to visual fidelity. Jaggies I feel are not really arguable. They are a graphical artifact that any game or game developer should strive to eliminate. I don't really think it's fair to not count off on the PS2 for that, considering even the N64 did some form of per-edge anti-aliasing in hardware while PS2 didn't do shit. Then that's not to mention how undeniably, inarguably better the VGA adapter looks than 90% of all PS2 games...
    Now what is interesting are the arguments that the DC never saw all of its features utilized (true), and that later generation PS2 games looked substantially better than the ones released on PS2 when DC was around (true). During the latter part of its lifetime, new rendering techniques like normal/bump mapping, HDR, and bloom lighting appeared, an while the PS2 barely supported anything in hardware, it was versatile enough and had fast enough GPU bandwidth to let the console actually do a LOT of these effects in software... which is basically like allowing the PS2 to do shaders on the CPU. That's why the games wound up looking so much better and had effects that the DC never saw...
    NOW what is interesting though is that the Dreamcast had a few VERY advanced effects like DOT3 BUMP MAPPING that look VERY VERY impressive, and were never used in commercial games, because the techniques weren't really mainstream yet. The PVR2DC never was fully utilized. Now, whether all of these fancy effects could've been pulled off with competitive poly counts or with all of the additional CPU load of a game logic going on, we aren't sure... but it certainly must be considered theoretically... Our game, Elysian Shadows, is a 2D/3D JRPG hybrid with a lot of advanced features like dynamic lighting, shadow mapping, bloom, normal/specular mapping, etc. The game is still in development, but we are very interested in seeing exactly what we can pull off with some of these very obscure special features the Dreamcast had which never saw the light of day... Great review. Thanks for making it! :D

      @Elysianshadows I'm perhaps a little late... But you are right about many things, tho there are some points I'd like to adress:
      > "The general trade-off between the two tends to be texture quality and hardware-based effects versus polygon count."
      Yes... plus, I would say that is a tradeoff not only between both systems, but a software decision on each of the systems anyway: More polygons = less space for textures and vice versa. It was already a console generation where calculating vertices was not the limiting factor anymore, and after that almost no one did use polygons to define the hardware power of a system anmore, since other factors were limiting, like fillrate or available memory.
      > "The PS2 had limited VRAM 4MB vs DC's 8MB (plus 8:1 hardware texture compression)"
      The PS2s eDRAM was not comparable to DCs VRAM and the PS2 did not even use the Main-RAM/VRAM-memory configuration. You'd store textures in PS2's 32MB of RDRAM, which acted a a unified memory. The eDRAM was used for both framebuffers and held the textures that were currently worked with to provide the bandwith those 16 parallel pixel pipelines needed, otherwise the system would be heavily bandwith-stalled.
      Still, DC COULD have an advantage in textures depending on the geometric complexity of the scene - though not as much as you'd think as that VQ texture compression only worked at around 5:1 average depending on the textures (8:1 was only the upper limit) and it was not losless compression (you lost details and colors in the process).
      Rule of thumb:
      The more PS2 took advantage of it's higher polygon capabilities, the more different games looked on both systems: More complex models on PS2, more detailed/more variation in textures on DC. The less polygons were used, the more similar they got in texture quality.
      "You cannot get much above 3-4 million polygons on DC without running out of texture space"
      You are right, memory was a problem, but Dreamcast was also fillrate-limited. To my knowledge, DoA2 at about 2 million polygons was about as high as the Dreamcast got in practice, I don't think there were any games going higher than that (discounting a few special scenes or hardware demos perhaps).
      > "Jaggies I feel are not really arguable. They are a graphical artifact that any game or game developer should strive to eliminate."
      I agree, as is pixel crawling/texture aliasing.
      > "I don't really think it's fair to not count off on the PS2 for that, considering even the N64 did some form of per-edge anti-aliasing in hardware while PS2 didn't do shit. Then that's not to mention how undeniably, inarguably better the VGA adapter looks than 90% of all PS2 games."
      Only, when playing in VGA-mode, no Dreamcast-game used any form of Anti-Aliasing as well. So if you mention the PS2 not doing anything to anti-alias the image, you should mention this as well!
      (There were only 3 Games on DC doing 2:1 SSAA on the horizontal axis, that's it!)
      You could get the same results on PS2, of course. Unfortunately, many games did not, so DC has an advantage there as almost every game used progressive scan and a full height framebuffer + deflickering filter in interlace mode.

    For me, nothing will ever beat the graphical leap I witnessed when I walked into Toys R Us and played the Sonic Adventure demo. Coming from a PS and Saturn, seeing the lens flare, the water, the boards breaking as the whale lept out from under it was breathtaking to 13 year old me. Only thing comparable was a few years previous playing the Wave Race 64 demo

      Some similar graphical leaps happened in the arcades earlier (Scud Race anyone?), maybe Mario 64 or in the PC-sector (I was blown away when playing with my R9700 pro!).
      But such leaps do not accur anymore - if you want that feeling again, perhaps playing in VR may be comparable. :)

      @Пётр Кроссбаккн Your comment makes no sense whatsoever: The Dreamcast's A/V port outputs only analog signals. Nothing digital about it. 31(.5)khz is the standard VGA horizontal scanning frequency, which is also completely analog. The DCHDMI is an internal converter which has nothing to do with the contents of this video and is soldered directly to the GPU and the DAC has nothing to do with the DCHDMI. It's only used to convert the GPU's digital signals to analog, only for the A/V port, not for the DCHDMI. HDMI only has clock and data lines, no scan signals.

    I ALWAYS said that many games on the Dreamcast looked just as good as the other consoles of its gen simply due to it's built in 3D GPU enhancement capabilities. Similar to the N64, the GPU in the Dreamcast was capable of several types of built in 3D Hardware Acceleration, which made what was a slightly underpowered system compared to the others appear to be just as nice looking if not better in some cases.
    The Dreamcast truly is an underrated beast with many fantastic games. Having owned one since launch, I never did understand why it was considered somewhat of a failure considering how great of a time I had with it and how many fantastic games it had.
    With excellent hardware design, a system can be less powerful and cheaper while still having excellent graphical output. History shows that when a system is very well designed at the hardware level with a very well thought out balance between CPU and GPU power and made to be very easy to develop for, it ends up hitting above it's weight in the longrun. Developers can push more from the system than one would normally expect which in itself levels the playing field. And in some instances, a weaker CPU can be substituted with a strong GPU in order to save costs and still have a very graphically capable system.
    Such was the case with the both the SNES and the PC engine. Both had somewhat weak CPU's but had excellent GPU's and thus were both very capable. This was also the case with the Dreamcast. The opposite was true of the Genesis, it had a very fast and robust CPU for the time but a somewhat mediocre GPU, and thus it's graphical ability is not quite up to par with the SNES.

    • @litjellyfish
      @litjellyfish 6 лет назад +4

      skins4thewin the GPU of the DC was not more powerful that the PS2 GPU. It had some more features but in general the fillrate was a lot lower that the PS2. And it did not have any real (automatic?) 3D Enhancements. Just plain garaud shaded textures polygons with fog. THE DC has hardware compression of textures that allowed to fit in more with a little quality loss (PS2 had more memory on the other hand) That’s it.
      Even so if programmed properly (balancing the CPU and GPU as you mentioned) the PS2 could feed a lot more polygons to the GPU to draw.
      Just because of this the DC was indeed a lot easier to develop so it meant that most games with normal optimization efforts just looked a little better on the PS2 (and sometimes worse) however if you had a really optimized game on PS2 it had a lot more stuff going on compared to the DC games.

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 4 года назад +1

      @@litjellyfish Yes, I am aware that the PS2's GPU was more powerful, that was basically what I said and was exactly my point. Not sure what you're responding to but it's certainly not my post as I never said anything of the sort. It does have some built in 3D acceleration though as far as I am aware.

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 4 года назад +1

      @DCTVclips That is 100% untrue. Sega did not in any way collapse. They were doing perfectly fine and still exist today. They simply discontinued the system because they deemed it a failure and thus decided to stop supporting it, and decided to move away from hardware and focus solely on software.
      This isn't even up for debate as it is in their very own words, you can literally look it up for yourself. The Dreamcast was generally considered within the industry to be a failed console, although I do not personally see it as such as I do feel that it sold well enough to be deemed a success.

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 4 года назад +1

      @DCTVclips Lol they did not collapse, and the Dreamcast did not sell "Very well". It didn't even reach 10 million units sold. It sold about as well as the Saturn did, which was also considered to be a general failure. Believe what you want though, I won't continue to argue with someone who is so out of touch with the facts.

    The Dreamcast has 16MB of system ram and 8MB of VRAM while the PS2 has 32MB system ram and 4MB of VRAM, but I think it probably has more to do with the PS2's graphics processor being more complex to work with than the PowerVR used by the Dreamcast. Programming the PS2 involved coordinating two vector processing units that were integrated on the CPU and could be quite tricky, especially early on.

    Biggest problem I have with PS2 versions of games nowadays and just the PS2 overall is that the games just have terrible image clarity on anything that’s not a crt. Sure HDTV’s weren’t the norm at the time but the dreamcast really future proofed itself with that VGA support and it makes me wish Sony at least supported it. Test Drive: Le Mans was brought out on the PS2 under the title Le Mans 24 Hours - it's the same game, but much worse on PS2. Aside from running at higher resolution, the Dreamcast version featured a full circuit of cars that was visible on screen without any reduction in frame rate, while the PS2 displayed fewer cars and dropped frames even doing that. If I remember right, the Dreamcast version also had online play, which the PS2 version didn't. The Dreamcast version also controlled more realistically - the controls were made more arcade-like for the PS2 release.

      @@almighty151986 There were cases where Dreamcast had better looking textures in certain scenarios over PS2, thanks to DCs specific hardware and the way in which it stored and rendered those textures in comparison to PS2. Here is a Unreal Tournament Digital Foundry "DF Retro" video done by John Linneman showing the differences and explaining why. You can watch from 4:30 to get straight to it.
      ruclips.net/video/eV8enCp651c/видео.html
      The DC has "Hardware Texture Compression", while PS2 uses "8 bit Palletized Textures" to save on VRAM. PS2 textures are stored in a texture sheet at a lower color depth, where a pallet texture is defined as a texel lookup before filtering is applied, which saves on PS2 VRAM, but leads to color differences in textures vs DC. John also says that PS2 games typically avoided using "Mip Maping" altogether, which led to blurrier looking textures from certain distances as well. But Dreamcast standard "Bilinear Filtering" was quite poor in comparison to PS2s implementation, so textures viewed from certain angles suffered from notable banding issues throughout the UT port (and likely other games as well).
      Obviously PS2 had many other graphical and performance benefits over DC in the UT console port, I am just talking about textures here and PS2 weaknesses and strengths in comparison to DC in regards to that (and the consoles hardware differences that explain some of those weaknesses and strengths as well). The entire DF video is interesting, going into the strengths and weaknesses of each consoles hardware when rendering in this specific game, and it is fairly insightful and worth a watch.

The PS2 having DVD playing abilities were a huge pull back then, despite the fact the architecture meant the entire launch line up looked jaggy and unimpressive in comparison. The big changing point in the PS2's life was Metal Gear Solid 2; where Kojima showed how to take advantage of the PS2's architecture to make games not just look good, but also have deeper gameplay than previous games. The Dreamcast is a good console no doubt, though as a late buyer it’s proving difficult to acquire games for it as they are generally more expensive than PS2 games. I’ve only got 4 games for it ATM (Grandia 2, RE2, Skies of Arcadia and Sonic Adventure) but I can see that it is a worthy competitor amongst the rest of the sixth generation.
    However, overall the PS2 just ANNIHILATES the Dreamcast. The PS2 has so much awesomeness that it’s not really fair to compare them. 2001 was where the PS2 really took off and after that game after game just kept coming for the PS2. The PS2 was a difficult beast to wrangle but when developers understood its hardware it produced stuff that still cannot be replicated and its library to this day continues to be one of the most varied libraries ever.

      And excellent sequels to great Ps1 franchises had released too, Gran T3, MGS2, FFX, Armored Core 2, Ace Combat 4, Twisted Metal Black, Grand Theft Auto III, Klonoa 2, Ridge Racer V, Tekken Tag etc. One of the strongest 1st years ever imo. The DC is great, but while the Ps2 had a slower/weaker launch, it came out swinging like mad by mid>late 2001 and the software momentum never slowed after. All the competition got overwhelmed despite also having many great games too.

    PS2's Dead or Alive 2 is not about jaggies. The game actually runs on a much lower resolution than the Dreamcast version. I would guess 320x240 against 640x480 on Dreamcast.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 лет назад

      Nah, resolution that low, unlikely, completely pointless. It would however be effective 640x240 or 512x240, i'm not sure. PS2 has no working flicker fixer, so in 60fps games, if you were to render all 480 lines, half of them would have exactly zero contribution to the image, thrown away, never to be seen again, were pointless to render to begin with, and it's most noticeable when there's enough movement. Unless the game implemented its own deflicker postprocess, which some games down the line did eventually, but not too many of them.

    I can argue until I’m blue in the face, between the PS2 vs DC. In 1999 the DC was honestly groundbreaking, and felt ahead of its time. The graphics, library, online ability, and controller were all fresh, implemented correctly, and felt new. At the end of the day, the Dreamcast was a ‘Gamers’ console.
    The PS2 brought a lot of muscle to the show, in terms of software support and DVD hardware being pushed. I wish the DC was supported a few years longer. I feel the GC, Xbox, and PS2 would have had tougher competition.

    Almost every single 2D Fighting game was massively superior on the Dreamcast due to the PS2’s horrific interlace options and woeful double field resolution, which either left visuals muddy and washed out, or gave them a shimmering style effect as the interlaced lines raced back and forth, often causing eye strain and headaches when being viewed at 30-60 frames per second.

    • @Bransfiiiield
      @Bransfiiiield  6 лет назад +15

      I got none of that from trying a bunch of them out - as said in the vid, the likes of SNK v Capcom 2 is too close to call, while Street Fighter 3 is better on PS2 as DC has input lag, making it harder to parry. PS2 had arcade perfect ports of KOF and other Neo Geo games... there are hardly any 2D fighters on DC that are actually, demonstrably better than on PS2 - from what I played.

    • @Juganawt
      @Juganawt 6 лет назад +10

      The N3groNinja it’s visible even on this very video. The PS2 just wasn’t built for 2D in mind, and it’s painfully obvious in earlier titles, regardless of what cables you use, or what upscaler you run it through. Look at MVC2 as a solid example of the horrific interlace shimmering effect. It’s especially noticeable on the HUD at the top of the screen - so much so that I can see it as clear as day even when watching this video on a small mobile phone. Almost all 2D games (and a selection of 3D games from the first 3 years the system was on the market for) that ran at 60fps suffered either this “sawing” effect, or a slight blurriness which muddied colours and clarity of the sprite work. It’s even more pronounced on PAL versions of games, too. Luckily, it seemed to improve in games post-2004-ish.

      Bransfield SF3 (I assume you mean 3rd Strike?) is a weird one. As far as I'm aware the port itself is a fine conversion on Dreamcast for what it is, the real reason behind the hostility towards the DC version is because it's based on a revision that's rejected by the competitive scene. (and maybe because of replacing the native CPS3 soundtrack with the arranged one with no option to switch back, IDK). If the input lag reports came from testing certain sequences like Urien's Aegis setups, some of them literally don't work in that revision.

    The Ps2 never hit as good as the Dreamcast for me. The Dreamcast felt amazing and futuristic and the Ps2.... while it was good just never blew my mind in the same way. It was also likely a little less impressive because of all of the ads they had that straight up lied. Looking back, so many of the "great graphics" the showed off pre release (for the ps2) were just pre rendered from a PC and it was light years ahead of what we got. I wish the Dreamcast would have been around long enough to put its hardware to use. It hardly ever got pushed to its limit and offered some insane titles for the time. People forget that the Ps2 was developed for much longer and devs had time to make stuff look "better" Although the VGA just completely outclassed the ps2. Both systems are a great piece of history. If dvd players were not $200 bucks more than a basic ps2 at the time then the DC might have stood a chance. I know my family got 2 because it was the cheapest dvd player they had at the time. The only thing I remember on it was tony hawk, odens sphere,kingdom hearts and a few FF games but a lot of those came much later. Who knows what the DC could have done.

(DEV's SHAME on you) Today, all this extra media stuff tacked on pretty much done in the XBONE... (amongst other things) but a lousy DVD player for the PS2 and lack of one for the Dreamcast, done in the Dreamcast. THAT shouldn't have caused the demise of the Dreamcast which in my opinion was superior. Only complaint I have is they could have done a better job creating the controller, did a great job but wasn't quite there. Trigger buttons were too far back and had to take breaks due to hands cramping up because of it. I have my PS2 from 2003 and NEVER put a DVD in that thing. Just wanted to play games. Nor did I buy that stupid $30 DVD remote for my Original XBOX. BTW, I STILL play my Original XBOX that I picked up in 2002! Not that anyone cares lol. Sorry, I am an anti-jaggie person. In the states all we heard was how graphically superior the PS2 was. It was the reason people had to be thrown out of Gamestop for arguing. It was the reason no one wanted to buy a Dreamcast and chose to wait a year. So, when I finally saw the games I was underwhelmed. The first thing that I noticed was that my eyeballs were still bleeding, even on the newest playstation. Them Jaggies was back!! They had brought dull colors with them. Strictly from a graphics perspective, the system was an automatic pass for me. As graphics is what was used to sell it on my side of the pond. The DVD player was the real star of the show. Of course you know the sales history. I just bought the XBOX instead. I finally got a playstation when the 4 was released. :))
    For the record Grandia 2 is one of my favorite RPG'S of all time.

    Its interesting If one looks at the sales records (There are few) then one finds that the Dreamcast did not actually fail in terns of sale, the problem is that Sega because of the its decisions (aka SOJ forcing SOA to launch the 32x and the Saturn early and the famous E3 97) caused them to be so far in debt before the dc even came out that no matter how well the dc did it could never fix the errors of the past. But the Dreamcast did sell well (Full video here on it ruclips.net/video/Ee1zwLN1D5A/видео.html) Also most of the Online games games are back Online so there is that too

    I firmly believe that if the Dreamcast had used dvd's then it would've sold a lot more units. More space for bigger games/cutscenes, less piracy (which certainly put a huge dent in DC game sales) and no need for a seperate dvd player would've worked wonders for Sega.
    One time the Dreamcast beat the PS2 for me personally is that my Dreamcast still works whereas my PS2 died exactly one day after the warranty finished. I haven't bought a new Sony console or game since so that they don't get my money. You don't need the laser anymore if you have the fat ps2. Just put a harddrive in it and a memorycard with freemcboot and play you games of the harddrive. This brings old dead ps2's back to life. As for the dreamcast, I have 5 of them and 3 of those eventually got the random reset bug which the dc was notorious for. 16:35 In addition for Grandia 2 Dreamcast vs PS2, there is an added cut CG scene at the beginning of the game on the PS2 version where Skye is carrying Ryudo above a monster base. The PS2 literally could not display all of the polygons of the trees in that scene (showing the Dreamcast's advantage of being the first console with hardware hidden surface removal) without chugging to a slide show (or so it was said). The PS2 version did feature higher resolution textures that someone eventually extracted and converted for use on the PC version of Grandia 2 (the first release, the one on Steam is from a different company and is a completely new port).
    The original PC port of Grandia 2... that is another disaster for and a subject all on its own. When I get ahold of an RGB/HDMI mod board for my Dreamcast soon, I plan on doing an entire comparison of all versions of Grandia 2.

      A Channel About Video Games I am tech stupid what is the difference between 480p and 480i

    • @DijaVlogsGames
      @DijaVlogsGames 6 лет назад +8

      480p draws an entire picture at once, 480i only shows half a picture at once.
      For the sake of simplicity, let's say a game runs on 1 FPS. 480p shows the entire picture in the second. 480i splits that picture in half and one second shows half a picture per second, followed by the second half (well, sightly different because the picture is moving) one second later.
      Not a problem on old 480i CRT televisions, but modern televisions have to deinterlace the 480i picture. It basically means that it waits for the second half of the picture and puts them together. This results in lag (because it has to wait) and a blurry picture (because the second half-picture isn't exactly the same as the first one)

    • @0rderSol

    I'm a Sega fanboy but the PS2 is easily my favourite console. The jaggies were only an issue with the launch games. I remember Tekken Tag being absolutely lambasted in reviews at the time. They worked out the aliasing shortly after, but the PS2 probably killed the DC on pre-release hype alone so less impressive looking launch titles or not it was a foregone conclusion.
    MDK was developed by Shiny. How is shinyness not a legitimate benchmark for DC superiority?

    Cool video, and great to see these comparisons done right. Two small video-related tech corrections to your commentary: PS2 Code Veronica's cutscenes won't be uncompressed, they'll just be less compressed, and most likely using a better codec (MPEG-2 since the PS2 was DVD capable, vs MPEG-1 on the DC). Uncompressed video, even in SD, is huuuuumungous. Secondly, the DC doesn't output a digital video signal, but analog RGB ("VGA"). But it's not far behind what an actual digital signal would be.
    It's ironic that the real ace up the Dreamcast's sleeve (the progressive VGA output) wasn't seen by most people at the time.

    I've enjoyed the Genesis for many, many years but when I see the Dreamcast I never see what the fans loved about it. I rarely see the game that speaks of the untapped potential of the DC nor did I find any games that made it better than the competition (as in hardware capable )
    Worst of all, the controller is awful. It's so bad. Like the 64 the one analog stick boned it from so many games being good or lessened their potential...Nevermind that the single stick it had wasn't very good (finger kept slipping off) and the Dpad chewed up my finger so bad on so many gaming nights...
    I don't know if the DC ever stood a chance compared to consoles that had DVD play back, far larger disc capacity and better abilities. With the limited controller, I don't know how long devs would care to cater to it when the other 3 happily had 2 sticks. ....1.5 in the case of the GameCube's wonky C-Stick
    And, at the time all but the DC and GC had DVD drives which sported far more storage and you could watch movies on them, which was a pretty nice bonus considering those were expensive for quite a while.

By arcade experience I'm talking about games like Cannon Spike, Outrigger, Power Stone 2, Crazy Taxi, Mars Matrix, Gigawing, Marvel vs Capcom, Metropolis Street Racing, Trickstyle, Daytona USA...
      Just all out arcade style games that Sega/Capcom etc bring to the table. The Dreamcast represented the end of an era, (the arcade era) and then began another... (ps I do agree about the controller though, not the best especially considering how perfect the Gen and Saturn ones were)

    My favorite thing is when the ps2 released and people were talking about how games on both systems were supposed to look so much better on ps2 and they didn't. Some didn't look better at all. Some actually looked worse even if only due to being lower resolution. The few that looked better on ps2 didn't look much better on ps2.

    I do agree that the PS2 was over hyped.
    "The PS2 plays DVDs and the Sega Dreamcast does not! Nuff Said!". That's what I was told! Yeah but so what! I buy a video game console to play games! If I wanted to watch DVDs, I would watch DVDs on a DVD player

    The main reason dreamcast failed was anyone could break the copy protection by writing 0x01 to the first sector on the iso.
    I remeber writing my own boot screen images and editing the jpg files then burning it all to a bootable cd

    • @fantom0369
      @fantom0369 6 лет назад +3

      actually this is not correct, the main reason the DC failed is because SEGA didn't have the money to support the system. so I'll repeat what I tell others. the DC didn't fail. SEGA failed the DC. if they had the money to support it the DC would have had a much longer life. in doing things how they did them SEGA essentially screwed themselves out of the trust of most of their fanbase.

    • @opticalip1
      @opticalip1 6 лет назад

      Kitanashia Kiratani and why did they not have the funds, because everyone was burning not buying the games

    • @fantom0369
      @fantom0369 6 лет назад

      the mistakes they made with the release of the 32x and releasing the saturn 6 months early really hurt SEGA money wise. when they released the DC they were still hurting. logically they should not have released the DC. no honestly it wasn't that people weren't buying the games. it would have still taken them years to recover even if people were going nuts to buy the games. don't delude yourselves into thinking if everyone was going crazy to buy the games for the DC that it would have survived. SEGA was so far in the red at the point the DC was released it was released with a huge loan given to SEGA from one of their investors. I loved my DC but I seriously think they should have taken some of their IPs and released them on other systems for a short time to recover losses before they released the DC. it is a proven fact that most people who can afford to do so will actually buy the games they like so the copy protection killing the DC isn't a thing. if you look at sales records for the DC people were buying it with games. if it was in fact what killed it those sales records would have told a different story.

      Jeremy Remington not true the Dreamcast failed because the Saturn failed which made people not trust SEGA

    • @fantom0369
      @fantom0369 6 лет назад

      The dreamcast didn't fail though, it was doing decently. It was SEGA's inability to support it monetarily wise that killed it. Infact people were starting to warm up to SEGA and beginning to trust them again. If anything the DC marked the final nail in the coffin so to speak when it came to people trusting SEGA

    Strong list! The online, VMU & VGA points besides of course anti-aliasing and having a great library of its own, especially considering the lower budget and the ironic truth is Dreamcast completely blows the PS2 out of the water! Unless you need a DVD player! 😉

      Fabian Cuyé given that it took a few years for the ps2 to get any games that were actually better than the DC had, it's basically DVD movies vs online play, vmus versus normal memory cards and 4 player support out of the box+online vs buying multitaps and really the DC had more features that the ps2 didn't have than the ps2 had that DC didnt have. Sure the ps2 had the link cable and a hard drive and modem were released late in the console cycle, but only for 1 game that most people still haven't played.

    • @JonathanDeane

      I would say the Wii is superior to the Dreamcast, in so so many ways... The Dreamcast is a fine console, but it's short short lifespan really left large holes in it's game library that quite honestly are glaring. RPG's are almost non existent for the platform. Meanwhile switch on over to the Wii and at least you get a couple of Zelda games and Monster hunter and a few other notable games. Online out of box? How about Wifi :P The eShop is chock full of great games (or was lol) you can hack the Wii with great emulators, the Dreamcast could never pull off quite full speed SNES (I own 3 Dreamcasts and it was the first console I though emulators where decent for but far from perfect.) Throw in hard drive loading for the Wii via USB and nice :)
      Dreamcast isn't even in the same realm as the Wii, don't let the anti Wii hype get you. If you looked into it's library and played the games you would realize there is a LOT of great games on the system, now the Wii-U holy #$&@ I bought it at launch and one of the few consoles I regret buying. I almost wish I could hack it to just turn it into an HDMI HD Wii... Sell off the pad and just boot it with Wiimotes.

    just to add for everyone who doesnt know, you can use an adapter called dreamPi to play dreamcast online in 2017, so to answer this vids question, yes a lot of people still play dreamcast online today, im pretty sure everyone's back in phantasy star right now, you can pretty much make your own online server's if I read it correct...

    FPS games on consoles are still garbage, at least the DC was smart and had mouse/keyboard support. The fact that the consoles coming after the DC didn't just held back the entire genre for years.

    • @beanwithbacon
      @beanwithbacon 6 лет назад

      Halo didn't bring anything new to the table what so ever in terms of FPS game design. What it did do is make an entire generation of gamers think that the genre could be made just as well and viable on consoles as it can be on PC's. The lack of proper control for FPS games on consoles has done nothing but hold back FPS game design for years.
