  • The Original Xbox was release in 2001 - the same year the Sega Dreamcast ceased hardware production.
    Many people believe that the original Xbox is actually the followup to the Dreamcast that Sega wanted.
    In this video we take a deep dive into the relationship that Sega and Microsoft had, and how the original Xbox is truly the follow up to the Dreamcast that Sega always wanted.

      Only in sales. It was better than the PS2 in every way. The PS2 only led the sales race because it had a head start and was a DVD player. The Xbox was a year late and needed a remote to play DVDs. How good the Xbox was is why the Xbox 360 got such a strong start out of the gate. Microsoft exclusives were top notch during that decade as well. Sony had good titles, but none as impactful and iconic as Halo during that period. I owned the Dreamcast at launch and when it was dying there was talk back then that Microsoft had a strong working relationship with Sega and that their upcoming Xbox console would carry the torch for Sega...at least early on. Nevertheless, I went from Dreamcast to Xbox for that very reason alone. Games like Gunvalkyrie were actually originally developed for Dreamcast late in it's life and when the system ended development moved to Xbox.

    @CommodoreFan64 6 лет назад +241

    In some ways yes the Xbox was suppose to be the next Dreamcast, but with SEGA having branched out into making games for other consoles, and portables soon after no it was not because SEGA did not remain exclusive to the Xbox. One thing that always puzzled me was why Microsoft never bought SEGA, and made them exclusive which would have given them an excellent 2nd party dev instead of buying RARE, and doing jack shit with it. but in hindsight I'm glad SEGA stayed 3rd party.

    • @Thomas-te2lg
      @Thomas-te2lg 6 лет назад +59

      Actually I think Microsoft did want to buy Sega, but Sega refused. Also Microsoft did use Rare when they bought them, but pretty much any title Rare cooked up was generally lambasted.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 лет назад +16

      Thomas Ruth if that's true, then it would have been down to SEGA of Japan, and their stubbornness. Far as RARE goes under Microsoft, the only thing they have remotely done well was RARE Replay, and it still did not make me want to go out, and buy a Microsoft console to play it, like RARE did in their glory days of the N64. In fact RARE games where one of the big reasons I got into collecting for the N64. So in my book that still counts as Microsoft not really doing jack shit with RARE.

    • @naughtygawd3269
      @naughtygawd3269 6 лет назад +16

      True. I think the reason the xbox didn't sell well in Japan was the lack of Japanese titles

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 лет назад +32

      NaughtyGawd That had some part to play in it for sure, but Japanese consumers are very nationalistic overall, and prefer to support home grown companies such as Nintendo, and SONY over Microsoft when it comes to their console preferences. No outside console has done well in Japan, Atari failed, along with the Apple Pippin, and it even had the backing of Bandai. The main reason Apple has done so well in Japan far as their computers, and other hardware is because overall since the 80's they have had better support for typing, and displaying the Japanese language.

    • @JBadAss98Gameing
      @JBadAss98Gameing 5 лет назад +5

      It's not xbox's fault that RARE can't develop a game to save their own damned lives after the year 2001. As a company, they suck cock, and you must now accept that, or keep lying to yourself.

    It's 100% the "spiritual successor" to the Dreamcast. There's too many defined links between the Chihiro board and the actual want of SEGA to make that the case... In a way I'm glad that's what happened. It's nice to know as a fan of the Dreamcast that when I turn on my original XBOX, I'm getting what SEGA would've basically made. As the Dreamcast was to the Naomi, the XBOX is to Chihiro. The home console version of the latest SEGA Arcade lineup. Great video.

    Thank you for making this video. I have been saying since 2002 that the Xbox was the newer brother to the Dreamcast. The Sega games that went to Xbox, the 4 controller ports, the 2 ports on the controller used for memory and communication (Dreamcast had the mic stick and Xbox plug in for headphones). They both had built in internet connections. Back to the controllers, similar layouts, letters for buttons and almost the same colors for those buttons. I believe some of the very same developers of Dreamcast went over to Xbox. I love how you even went into the true technology that is used by both systems. I have been a long time Seag fan, well collections include Saturn and Dreamcast, so I approve of this video, since I was just going to make one....well now I can't. Sry but the xbox 360 was something else and as for the controller colors it doesn't make a difference.

    I meant to mention this the other day but just remembered, although Sega dropped the home console market it didnt stop them building machines, they had Naomi which was kind of the Dreamcast 2 - I happened to be in the US when Sega released the news they were getting out of consoles so I was able to snap up a bunch of peripherals at discount prices - I also remember seeing the last of the remaining Sega Australia Dreamcast stock sitting on a pallet in port Melbourne waiting to be gutted for arcade machines - I wanted to cry lol

    mmm Sega games for XBOX original is fantastic: Jet Set Radio Future,Panzer Dragon Orta,Sega GT 2002 (my opinion is much better of Gran Turismo 4).XBOX original best hardware for console generation,Ninja Gaiden Black is best action game for engine and gameplay is level up for generations games,XBOX has brought the features then implemented in the generations after (XBOX 360 and PS3) as the online service and the use of high resolution in games.A nice feature was the conversion of the audio formats converted by cd by saving them on hard disk, the interesting thing was that many games could use the music saved by integrating them in games !, you could listen to your music on the radio or CD in GTA San Andreas for example.

      @@aawwmm I have played a lot of Sega Gt on XBOX for a long time, two are the main problems discussed on Gran Turismo and other titles, the AI and the physical damage to the cars, the latter also a copyright problem of car manufacturers that do not want damage image, Sega has solved with an energy bar system that indicates the damage of the car, Sega has also introduced systems of use of the wheels, brakes and all this affects the economy introduced in the game, this title offers you a very simulation experience rewarding, you have to be good at finishing first while remaining cautious about maintenance costs and it is something that not even the most modern games take into consideration.

    I bought a Dreamcast on day 1. At the time. That system had the biggest "WOW" effect on me. Dreamcast introduced a tennis game that was actually amazing to play. And I hate tennis. The 2k sports started on the Dreamcast. Shenmue was outstanding at the time. Tomb Raider the Last revelation and Resident Evil Code Veronica were must have for the system.
    Pound for pound. The Dreamcast was the best console ever made

    Had Sega gone first party with Microsoft they would have never been pressured into making cash grab sonic games to keep afloat .They would have taken new risk reviving old franchises with the budget of a software giant.

      This is an interesting point I've been pondering recently. I'm predominantly a PC/PS/Nintendo gamer and so for that reason I'm glad they didn't buy Sega, but one would have to assume that Microsoft had discussions about it being a possibility early on. Consoles are driven by exclusive software, and if Microsoft could have said, 'We have all of Sega's games, we have Halo' etc, it would have been a much stronger value proposition from them. To this day, XBOX's biggest problem is worthwhile exclusive content beyond Halo and Gears.

      Not just designers… there are conspiracies out there claiming M$ sort of pulled a Nokia with Sega. Apparently the guy making the decision to give up Dreamcast went to Microsoft mere months afterwards. And he was only a substitute for the Japanese senior that had gotten ill some time before. Not sure if it's true though.

    • @RarebitFiends
      @RarebitFiends 6 лет назад +21

      Not conspiracy, You're talking about Peter Moore, who was CEO of SEGA of America before he left for MS. He was a big driving force behind SEGA exiting the hardware business, which happened shortly before he left to head up the Interactive Entertainment Business division at Microsoft, which is the division that first created the XBOX.

      "Apparently the guy making the decision to give up Dreamcast went to Microsoft mere months afterwards."
      More bullshit. You need to research the history of WebTV and the original Xbox. And also the person who decided to axe the Dreamcast and the Japanese management of Sega right before that time.

Dlc for games , surfing the internet ? A memory card with display that can show info about current game in your controller ? Im sure there is more but theese are some of the things im thinking of, and the console was made 2 years before ps2 in 1998. Dont have me start talking about the games :)

      While I agree that the Dreamcast was impressive for it's time, there were other systems that were just as important to gaming. Don't forget Nintendo who basically saved the north american market (although the "crash" only happened there). The Amiga, while being marketed as a home computer, was impressive to gaming, as was the C64. The Atari 2600 was basically the first big player. About online capabilities, there were Nintendos Satellaview and the Sega Channel for Genesis/Mega Drive.

    Dreamcast was such an absolutely amazing system. I remember feeling like Sony was conquering simply by throwing a ton of money at exclusive titles, just TONS of them and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve owned every Xbox system released... and never owned a Sony console. So I guess subconsciously I never forgave them haha.
