- In his book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Button (the creator The School of Life) outlines how we experience a certain kind of anxiety that involves our tendency to compare ourselves with other people with respect the financial wealth. And this he calls status anxiety. Which is also a consequence of our cultural story telling throughout the millennia--where we took a hard turn at the dawn of the industrial revolution--equating moral standing with riches and material possessions.
The video emphasizes the consequences of cultural storytelling and status seeking in the western societies.

The problem is that luck plays a pivotal role in our lives, much more so than most people realize. We are not 100% responsible for our successes or failures
Joseph Conrad said only the inexperienced Don't believe in luck.
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity
Hard Work + Luck = success
"Given that the playing field was equal in opportunity"
This assertion is contentious in our time. The grey line of free will vs. responsibility is blurred.
Yes, I agree.
I think travel can get you out of this dilemma. Travel the world - get out of The States for a bit and see what people really value and how other groups of people live far more simply and seemingly happily. America’s “big is best”, “$ is best”, “fame is best”, is not best at all.
Go to 3rd world countries where everyone works so hard for scrapes and realize that America is the best. I been to 38 countries.
Really interesting videos, thanks mate!
My $2:
Success and achievement can mean many different things and are not limited to physical and material gain. Success can mean building families, relationships, personal habits or positive changes as well. Some things defy measurement.
For what it's worth, in the Hindu tradition the majority of people are considered "Householders" - a stage of life occupied with the everyday world of work, family, finances, and personal/spiritual progress. This is considered to be the most challenging part of life - development of a person's full potential and finding the balance of virtue, finances, and family. To succeed in the everyday is no small feat.
A wise man once told me "Success is living YOUR path." As illustrated in your wonderful video on Hunter S. Thompson - there is no one right way.
You don't have to be perfect to be successful.
May you go forth and multiply.
Have you ever heard durkheims theory of suicide,he has the conclusion of "the right and tought of choosing who you can be increased suicide rate, cause when you were in class system, you couldnt choose who you can be and its not your problem or its not your guilt, but when you have right to be something you are "responsible" for your "failure".the only problem is you.
Personally... i think we all got the definition of success wrong. Im 22 and wasn't born to a rich fam raised by a single mother and started working at age 10 eventually by the time i was 18 i was addicted to alcohol and cigs because of that fear... and only now i seem to understand that success for every person is individual... the problem is the social media sells us that ONE kind of lifestyle
It seems important to point out that most of those medieval christian peasants were completely illiterate and bound to the local lord, so they couldn't change their status if they wanted to. There were exceptions in some places, of course, but the masses, for the most part, couldn't begin to entertain the idea of "betterment".
American dream i wanna live upto , but im not even getting visa .
To be fair, there is a marginal amount of status (wealth, prestige, etc.) needed to be comfortable, and that is increasingly becoming more difficult for people, so status anxiety is well-founded.
The extremes are maybe more aspirational, but I really don't worry about not becoming a billionaire.
I do worry about the compound effects of a bad patch in a far less compassionate world.
A) “You are responsible for your place in life. You have control over where you’ll be in the future.”
B) “You are not responsible for your place in life. You have no control over where you’ll be in the future.”
A or B?
LIBETY? What is that? I demand more LIBETY!!!!
I look at your last chart.
I look at a chart of smartphone adoption.
In 2012 we reached 50% smartphone adoption (today close to 100%)
Might there be a connection?
I think it's safe to assume so.
give me libety or give me deth
Were you a fighter or boxer previously?

Great.
Then, you got the black belt or this 'black' turtleneck.!😂
Well you got to change the story again.
Food stamps and human growth hormone brah....
Who are all these "people" you are talking about; there is no one.
What part of the video are you referencing specifically?
I was the 666th viewer, I wonder what the universe is trying to tell me... 😂
That you're the chosen one.
Gfy. Inherited money is the only leg up..
Under Lenin and Stalin the classes absolutely determined your moral value.
I disagree, in a first world country a person with discipline, strategy and a strong work ethic it is easy to get wealthy but only with sacrifice.
Well, its good that I and many know that you have taken the Bible completely out of context. Please stop spreading ignorance.
