- Lagom is the Swedish lifestyle philosophy, translating as ‘not too much and not too little, It means to have just the balanced choice between two extremes. In order to know how to balance your life, you need Lagom, as it embraces a balanced, sustainable lifestyle.
In order to understand how to balance your life using Lagom approach, we have broken up this video into four main categories -

Lagom, the Swedish word for a lifestyle that encourages balance and mindfulness in everything that you do. Lagom is a thread that ties many parts of Swedish society and culture together, the cornerstone of personal behaviour, design ethos and community. Applying a sense of lagom to our everyday lives - be it in what we eat, what we wear, how we live, how we work - might just be the antidote to our modern, consumption-led world as it embraces a more balanced, sustainable lifestyle that embraces the pleasures of existence rather than those of consumption. Lagom celebrates the idea of “just enough” which is the perfect space between minimalism and living in excess and this particular brand of socialism is partly the reason why Sweden consistently ranks top ten in the happiest countries in the world.

I am 53.5 years old i having back problems have not worked for almost a year and giving me time to really look at my life and see that what we are trained we should do may not be something I want do like being the most successful, the richest ect. Many times when we worship money relationships suffer. It's so hard not to follow main stream. I am really working on my inner self esteem, self worth so I won't need the approval externally that is the only reason I want to do many things I did in the past. If I am really honest what I always wanted is a peaceful childlike life not a go go go never stop life that I feel this society has become in the last 50 years. But I must admit it's not easy to break away from the herd I need to be inner confident to live a simple life and not rely on the new car, clothes, status to feel good. Thank you for making this video trying to study it to see how can I make a serene balanced life possible for me so I can be peaceful, happy, content for however many years I got left and most of those moments be filled with peace and great moments because I have a balanced kide not a life full worry .

"Lag" means both "law" and "team" in swedish. "Om" have several meanings for example "round", "around". Lagom is to let a group or team take a decision. The matter goes "lag om", the team around. That almost always ends up in "in between" or "the middle way" or simply lagom.

I agree about the excess thing as well. It bothers me so much when things have no purpose. Mind you, I’m junky and could clean more but things like fake drawers and decoration pillows drive me insane.
I love that they brought up the Lagom of "Minimalism vs. Living in excess". So if you feel unbalanced don't start trying to balance all aspects of your life because there is no need to put effort into balancing something you actually are better off cutting out of you life. So declutter first. Then find balance/lagom in the things that remain :)

I r4espect hard work, but will agree that most of those longer-worked hours in the USA are spent poorly - surfing the net, talking to friends on the phone, napping on the toilet, gossiping or playing around when the boss isn't looking.... Many jobs I've worked at seem like playgrounds to me.
I never thought of it as a philosophy. But it makes sense to view it as one. Guess it was just too normal for me, being raised in the society where it is a foundation.
Just one disagreement, tho. Lagom does not mean you must get rid of every item of no use. The minimalism is also a thing best done in moderation. Lagom is not about getting it 'exactly' right in the middle between too much and too little, but finding 'enough' of a balance.
I love this idea achieving in finding your niche as oppose to trying to prove your status.

I don't know if it's political propaganda or too linear a way to view the world, but there's a time and place for both; moderation and excess. They have their respective pros and cons. For instance, the US became the desired destination for pioneers and innovators because it successfully turned excess into a cultural art form, exploiting the beauty of what excess can bring while indeed suffering the ugly at the same time. It's been the driving force of modernization for a reason; people wanted more and so they made more, became more. In the same way, collectively settling for moderation removes any and all need for ambition and can render a society stale and mediocre; a reality Sweden has indeed felt. So how can we juggle both, pursue greatness while having a refuge of moderation somewhere to retreat to in order to recharge? Finding a balance between excess and moderation is just as essential as finding balance within moderation. :)

I have a lot of these values but for me it’s just to facilitate my laziness. I’m fine having less things to have more freedom and sleep in. I like getting better at what I do but what I do doesn’t make me money yet so it’s all enjoyment.

Almost everything you hear from Scandinavian countries is positive. They should be the leaders of Europe.
Maybe you should check out how islamic mass immigration is working out for Sweden. Or how they absolutely fail to handle the COVID-19 crisis. So no: they should absolutely not be the leaders of Europe.
Norway, which is not part of the EU, is doing a great job on the other hand on both accounts, keeping both in check.

You say Sweden has 25 days Statutory Annual Leave, and we have "a meagre allowance"? Statutory Annual Leave for a full time worker in the UK is 28 days, surely?

So american's on average work 32 hours a week and Swedens work 28 hours per week? What if I want to work 50-60 hours a week and build passive income for a few years so that I don't ever have to work again? Will the government take a larger cut from my hard 60 hour workweeks and give it to someone who works 28 hours a week? I thought I was a socialist before I watched this video hahah
First of all, sorry for bad English
Im Swedish and work as a Plumber so I can only speak for myself.
We have 40 hours per week with 25 days paid vacation every year. Some people (myself for example when I was younger) work instead of vacation to earn extra money. That month you basically get double pay.
We also have 40 hours Arbetstidsförkortning (meaning shortening of working hours)every year. That's 40 hours every year you can use when ever and how ever you want. If you don't use the Arbetstidsförkortning you get paid those hours from the previous year in January.
You are right and thats the downside with this "socialist eutopia". You can work 60h/week if your employer allows it but the government may take ALOT from your salary as high income taxes if you earn more than (for year 2020) 509 300 crowns (58593,08 US$) per year.
Say you have 500 000kr salary per year but put in som extra hours and you earn 509 500 you have to pay high income taxes. In this case its more beneficial for you to get those extra hours as paid vacation.
It's hard to work yourself rich but hey, we like it Lagom 😁
You can skip some taxes if you're self employed but then you wouldn't get government pension.

Lagom is a tool for mediocrity and has resulted in an abhorrent amount of jealousy throughout the Swedish society. Anyone that is striving for something higher is therefore an pretentious reminder of their own lacklustre goals in life to them.
I am pragmatic, I'm nothing like the person you're describing because I am in balance. I do not idealize Sweden... their Marxist ideologies are not in keeping with my logic.
