  • After a series of unfortunate event, the philosopher and writer, Michel de Montaigne, was haunted by death and retired early to escape into solitude. It was there that he learned the art of living through the study of stoicism (particularly Pyrrho) and writing often whatever came to his mind.
And in this way, he became the inventor of a new writing style that would change the literary world. It was the essay.

He was very privileged but in my opinion that doesn’t mean he was wrong. I think if you search with negativity that is usually what you will find. Is it not important to find joy in trying over and over again, in the journey? Is it not important to think with humility and always search for knowledge? Should you be afraid of failing and not search for what brings you joy? Should you fear death or live each day with purpose? What does food or money have to do with any of the above?

i wish the essays were shorter. he praises Seneca's letters for the piecemeal nature, wish he did the same.
