How to Avoid Philosophical Suicide | Albert Camus

  • The philosopher Albert Camus noticed that there were two ways to commit suicide. One being physically and the other philosophically. In his essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus addresses a fundamental condition that we're all in--of being meaning searchers in a universe void of inherent meaning. He called this condition the Absurd. And in acknowledging this, we have the opportunity to respond as Sisyphus did: to affirm life despite it's absurdity. That is the essence of avoiding philosophical suicide.

    camus's philosophy literally saved my life. i was in my worst state a few months ago and seriously considered taking my life. when i looked into camus's philosophy, it got me thinking more about life and death until i reached my own comclusion for why one shouldn't commit suicide. i love philosophy

      and why one shouldn't . Ig i am at same stage as u were, I don't see a point in my life neither i think i add value to someone else's life...and the only reason i still i am, (is coz of my parents )... I am watching my dreams fall apart.. the girl i loved who will never be mine, all my desires will never be fulfilled. What is the use of such life. *struggle ..pain ..suffering death*

      Hey man I attempted suicide when I was 17 from carbon monoxide, now I’m 19. I’m so glad I was able to read his book recently because it helped lift me from a depression that years of counselling, medication and loved ones could not console effectively. I find his idea that what suicide implies to others a very effective measure especially because he’s so careful with his wording as to not step on any toes but to rather suplex you into equanimity

    Well I mean, why not simply end the absurd behaviour? I know my behaviour is absured, it is decaying, eventually I'll become an old vegetable and so what is the point? I may as well end myself right this moment. I don't want kids, I'm 26 never fallen in love. Been mostly dissapointed, hurt, betrayed, and abandoned. So in all of its absurdity, instead of just accepting my fate, and being in the present moment which is boring and simply returns to me being aware of how miserable the unknown of being is, like would it be fair if people instead supported my desision for an assisted suicide?

      Life can be hard but life can also be beautiful, these things are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes it's difficult to deal with uncertainty, depression and well the absurd. All we see are clouds but every now and then the sun comes through, you're young, there's a lot of head, some good, some bad but most likely something worthwhile. Maybe you'll look back and say it was all a waste, so what? that's tolerable, there is no mission to it, but what if it was worthwhile? What if something good happened? Look I'm roughly your age, I have no idea what so ever maybe nobody dose but for what it's worth I've had quite a bad year and things are slowly looking up again. I hope the same can happen for you too, now I am certain it will with time, I know it can be hard but it's gonna be worthwhile. all the best bro!

      I often think, it didn't hurt for the billions of years before you're born, and it wouldn't hurt for the billions of years after you're dead, so the decades you're living is just a short stay in the theatre where we got to be the actors and audience at the same time. The play can be sad or funny, better enjoy this short ride of emotions while it lasts.

      A lot of people walk the long hard road , it’s absurd life is absurd , my advice is be cool & relax,don’t overthink to much it’s just confusing, I’m 59 & had a challenging & sometimes difficult life, but the good times smash the bad ones. Booze & drugs are best kept to a minimum & if u get on it , cool , don’t despair ,Just don’t get on it all the time. Take it easy

      imo it's an incredibly fair option to consider from a philosophical standpoint, but the fact that we're these lizard brain meatbags, there is such a high chance of future happiness that we should always keep living anyways. Like a different commenter said, "be cool and relax" because it is only frantic hyperfocus on bad thoughts that will ever reach you to the conclusion of suicide. If you've been happy before, you're likely to be again.

    No. Philosophical suicide is when you endorse or believe that x while knowing full well that x is entirely indefensible, e.g., a belief in God’s existence.

    • @TurtleneckPhilosophy
      @TurtleneckPhilosophy  10 месяцев назад +2

      You're absolutely right. I should've been clearer by stating what philosophical suicide IS. But I'm more so outlining how philosophical suicide can be avoided despite knowing the Absurd--and that is by affirming life despite it. In other words, it's attitude on top of recanting belief in what's most probably nonsense.

    no offense, but the 'absurd' is just another metaphysical boogeyman.
    it's funny that some adults believe in it in the same way that little kids believe in Santa. Imagine calling yourself 'Santaist' like some called themselves 'Absurdist' lol
    no diss on Camus, he was a good fiction writer

    • @kyaniteblue4929

      Nonetheless, we're living in a world of concepts and a need for language. So we require the usage of terms, in order to specify our philosophical viewpoint. No one worships the Absurd. No one prays to the Absurd. So your analogy of Santaism is a fallacy.

    • @TurtleneckPhilosophy
      @TurtleneckPhilosophy  Год назад +4

      Thanks for the input; I get what you're saying. Claiming the absurd is a positive assertion of a metaphysical reality, or in this circumstance the absence of one. But in any case, it's something that can't be verifiably ascertained through science. It's not something that can be measured and tested and detected with any of our senses.
      So yes, it that way I agree with you that it is something like a metaphysical boogeyman. On the other hand though, the absurd makes much more probabilistic sense than a santa clause. Just not a fair comparison imo

      It seems that killing yourself is a greater rebellion to the absurd than making the most of it especially if you really could remove yourself from the equation but in all likelihood we probably will all be back again
