The Scramble for Africa is one of the most contentious actions in history. In 1884, the powers of Europe met in Berlin to discuss the colonization of Africa. While no official borders were directly drawn because of the Conference, it formalized the Scramble for Africa, and laid out the acceptable ground rules for colonization. I decided to get 14 people from my discord server assigned as diplomats for every nation present at the conference to redo the Scramble for Africa.

@@Zeelandian_Manfor the part about Guinea, I looked it up and apparently Guinea was extremely not profitable and cost more than it made with its modern gdp being only 1.3 billion usd while for 60 million francs converted to modern day usd is 3 billion which is a great deal, as for the connecting parts in Angola you’ll just need to wait for the next video ;)

This is what france historically wanted in the region. But still is a bit unrealistic for all of those states to not put up resistance. Britain was the closest to it, and they were just being indecisive

He argued for all of Africa which was obviously not gonna happen and in doing so probably lost most of his credibility and bargaining power with the other European Powers. As a lover and player of Portugal, in my opinion I would've either put all my chips into bargaining for a larger Guinea colony or for a land connection between Angola and Mozambique.

if I was the Russian diplomat, I would have offered Italy the Ogaden region while the core of Ethiopia was a Russian ally. Possibly cite the Russian colonies in northern Djbouti as a springboard for Ethiopian sea access. Maybe incentivise France to give up Djbouti to Ethiopia by supporting them getting northern Ghana from Britain (though not touching German Togoland) and having naval access in Djbouti if they gave up the whole colony to Ethiopia

I would have brought a list of clear requests.
As an italian this would be:
Non negotiable: Morocco's northern ports (for access to the atlantic), Suez (for access to the red sea), East Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and somalia), the fourth shore (libya and tunisia) and some key parts of Nigeria with a land connection to Libya, possibly throught Niger
Negotiable: All of Nigeria (we recognize british interests there and are open to a partition) and Egypt (with Sudan)
Then in the Congo and Southern Africa I would just ask for resource rights and some major ports to project military power in case of conflict
This conference was a lot more of f’ing around than trying to be this serious

@@Videntis.History Not the entire world. Contrary to popular belief, the Treaty of Tordesillas only divided "newly discovered lands." It explicitly mentioned these lands and these lands only. They don't get to conquer the entirety of Europe. The video should split Africa, the Americas, etc. along the lines set by the Treaty of Tordesillas (ratified by the two powers in 1494 and setting a meridian west of the Cape Verde islands to divide the two powers) and the Treaty of Saragossa (ratified in 1529 and accounts for the lands of Asia). So basically all of these lands minus Europe divided along these lines. The video could be titled something like, "What if the European Powers recognized the colonial claims of Portugal and Spain". I'm not saying to automatically give these lands to the two powers but to make it so other powers wouldn't interfere with their colonization attempts. Keep everything non-colonial related the same, like WW1, WW2, etc.

Portugal will be happy Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, são Tomé, principe, guinea bissau and: Annobon, Casemance (we were there before the French) Congo-kinshasa (it had been granted to us before the Belgians got in the way -this come genocide free-) Zimbabew, Malawi and Zambia (the pink map). We will be the historically not resourcefull and because of that not forceful enough colonisers...not meddling too much and not racially too discriminatory. Luanda is gorgeous so it gets to be the capital of a massive Central African State powerfull enough to develop and do its own thing, speaking portuguese and dancing Kuduro and with a nice alliance with Brazil and Portugal where they would soon be the biggest portuguese speaking nation and capable enough to make sure the neighbours do not genocide or civil war or dictatorrlue themselves too much..that is my dream.
As the Portuguese player I did not go this in depth with their goals lol

For Germany I would have probably focused my efforts in the Congo primarily and not much else because then you could have justification to only aim for central Africa due not you not getting much else besides it.
