Fun fact, the current Square Enix is formerly Enix. Squaresoft was the dissolved company in the merger.
Wow! I always thought that Square was the current Square Enix and Enix was dissolved.
Johnathan Mahones I thought so too at first. It really gives context as to why Square Enix and Squaresoft act like corporally different companies.
Me too, hence why the logo still looks like Squaresoft, not Enix.
Peanut Turner That was intentional for international brand recognition purposes. Enix was too niche outside Japan.
Ha I was wondering if that was the case, I always assumed it was Square but the thought maybe it was Enix who is the main company never crossed my mind until now
Chun is a-door-able.
PeanutbutterKirbyPeanutbutterKirbyPeanutbutterKirby with a baseballcap.
Wohhahahh
i see this fucking game on bootleg plug&play consoles all the time
me too, you're not the only one XD
brother please
Super! :3 I was just about to mention that.
I like how the video told us like the pro strats of playing Door Door
Top tier strats for only the hypest of gamers.
This was my first exposure to Japan-only games, back in 2001 my dad used to buy me a bootleg plug n' play controller which resembled that of an N64. Door Door was one of the games included on that controller, along with other Famicom games. My sister and I would play them for hours.
After it broke, I googled to see if any of those games were available on the NES. Turned out it wasn't, which led me to import a Famicom and Super Famicom during my High School years looking for great hidden gems that not everyone knew about at that. Best decision I've ever made. ☺
George Vasquez Bro I had the same thing when I was little! I think it was called the super joy 3, and it even had a famicom port on the back. Sadly mine blew a fuse and broke :/
Paper Mr.Spazoraptor Yeah, that's the one. Crappy build quality aside, I thank those controllers for opening me the door to the world of imports.
George Vasquez Exactly. I've played a lot of NES/Famicom games I probably wouldn't have been exposed to because of that bootleg miracle.
@@CarbyGuuGuu Because of the Super Joy 3 plug & play , I'm introduced to a lot of really great Japan-exclusive Famicom games like Mappy, Door Door, Circus Charlie, Yie ar Kung Fu, Pooyan, etc. Ever since, I become such a huge fan of retro gaming and importing Japan exclusive retro video games is one of my biggest hobbies in gaming to this day. I have the Super Joy 3 Plug and Play since I was 5 years old and played these really great games. Even though the Super Joy plug & play is technically a cheap Famiclone, it is a great introduction to get into these really great Nintendo Famicom games.
I had that Clone NES Console from the mall years ago as well.
I love how he laughs while saying "dying on purpose"
Could you please do "X" for the Gameboy at some point? It inspired Star Fox after all.
Jeremy Parish did kind of a run down on the game. I think his reasoning on it not being released outside the US is pretty stupid, but he gives a nice gameplay rundown.
And "D" for Sega Saturn.
So wait Spike Chunsoft and everything Kojima worked on would have not been made as well as the possibility that other Enix games wouldn't have come out if it were not for this simple (fun looking) puzzle game? History is so odd.
I've played the PC-88 version of Door Door, it's... Well, it's okay...
Enix used to publish a lot of text adventure games with really impressive animated artwork for the PC-88, but unfortunately, people are fan-translating the Famicom ports which are, let's say, "Less impressive" to put it lightly... I wish they'd translate the original versions instead... I suppose I'm gonna have to learn Japanese in order to truly enjoy those versions...
So basically, an early Hotel Mario?
So that's the origin of Spike Chunsoft, huh? Neat!
Now all they're known for is dungeon crawlers. Oh, and ruining the Fossil Fighters franchise. There's that too.
Don't forget Zero Escape and Danganronpa.
thats a dungeon crawler.
I wouldn't consider Zero Escape and Dananronpa dungeon crawlers. They are visual novel/puzzle games.
skyblade57 Somebody needs to play Zero Escape and Danganronpa. The first two games of each series are on Steam.
was refering to a reply about the pokemon mystery dungeon series that was deleted.
Chunsoft made Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
904funny Yeah but what is kinda weird is that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a spin-off for both Pokemon and MD. Mystery Dungeon started as a Dragon Quest spin-off but the mainline MD series is known as Shiren the Wanderer
Door Door just sounds like a clever, great puzzle
thankyou for such an interesting video ^^
Oh my god! That's how Chunsoft was created?! They made two of my favorite game franchises!
Haven't watched yet, but I love this game! I got it on an old game remote from a flee market X3
After watching this video, I decided to buy this game from an eBay seller in Japan, along with some other games. It's actually pretty fun and very challenging. If you have a Famicom, you should totally get this game.
You guys should do Shin Onigashima for Region Locked
I like this game! I discovered it in a list ages ago and randomly started playing it. I was surprised to see anyone do a video about it. :D
Glad to surprise, we're hoping to show more obscure titles soon. Have a few favourites lined up too.
Hotel mario fucking stole this shit.
I heard "hello and welcome to" my mind jumped straight to "hello, and welcome to judging by the cover. Where we'll be judging door door, by the cover"
I'm a big fan of Yahtzee so I'll take that as a compliment.
I heard 'Hello! And welcome to moooore.."
Hmm... perhaps not quite as flattering.
I remember playing this game! In one of those catridges that have 1001 games in 1
Nice to see a video like this on this channel, bit of a break from the slightly tired (now) format of "Did you know.....?"
Glad you think so, we're happy to try and shake things up a bit where we can. We'll be covering some more obscure titles in the future :)
This reminds me of mappy. It's one of the few games on here I'm okay with not being released here. It's just kinda simplistic, but given the time it would have come out it would have done okay
This actually seems like a really clever and fun game! That was super interesting!
Oh boy, it's Greg. I can't wait to tell my friends about the DYKG episode featuring THE Greg.
Thank you so much for your totally genuine support.
All in good fun I'm sure Greg XD
So basically, it's Pac-Man meets Hotel Mario.
I do remember this game. It was on a nes era console made from third party publisher that weren't even know.
Kind of like bootleg but the games were actual NES and other 8-Bit games from that time.
what an awesome name. Door Door.
Played this a lot in my childhood.
Chun might just be the cutest video game character I have ever seen :) just puts a smile on my face
0:27 Door Door wasn't Enix's first published game, they were putting out their contest winners on home computer beforehand. I will have to search for the release date list I found, but I think that Love Match Tennis was among the first and Door Door came out a few months later.
4:21 "Supervisor" may be Horii's credit, I don't know, but Sakaguchi makes it clear that they were essentially co-directors on Chrono Trigger. Horii had as much to do with Chrono Trigger as Sakaguchi.
I've been trying to find the name of this game, I remember playing Door Door on a bootleg plug and play console I found.
same tbh. the controller and console looked like an n64 controller
I remember when i had a fake n64 controller. You know, the ones with the NES Games saying 9999 in 1, I remember playing this.
same here
Chun looks like a Bomberman enemy.
The beginning of the video makes it seem like Enix developed Illusion of Gaia, 7th saga, and Star Ocean, but they were made by Quintet, Produce, and Tri-Ace. Enix just published them (I know it said this in the video, but shortly after it says Square and Enix were known for making RPGs).
So THAT'S where Shyamalan got the idea for Signs
Doors...an alien's only weakness...
finally a game I have never heard of!
looked like a really fun game
I have this plug and play called 101 in 1. It has all of the basic NES games on it and one of those games happen to be door door
A Game where you open and Close Doors? Hotel Mario Much...
I have a feeling of deja vu... I remember playing this long ago
I really like Greg's endcard whimsy.
I consider myself lucky I had this on a pirate nes cart growing up in the late 80s early 90s
I think I saw this in Nakano a couple of weeks back, if it's not too expensive I'll have to go back and get it.
basically the good version of that one Mario cdi game
I didn't know this game, I love it! I want the cartridge!! hahaha
Spike Chunsoft... They did some of the Streetpass games, didn't they? They did Warrior's Way, and I forgot what else.
2:29 That sucks.
3:25 Oh that company.
Awesome video
Wow if you switch the first letters of Region Locked, you get Legion Rocked... which sounds even cooler. :O
this is a pretty cool idea for a game.
anyone else thinking "hodor? hodor hodor hodor, hodor. hodor!"

Can you guys give your thoughts or analysis on the Switch as of late?
Did you know that the first Square game was a text-based war-themed adventure game called "The Death Trap"?
Sounds like a fun game. Would have been cool in the arcade
I remember door door yes ^^ I heard there is remake also
Door Door reminds me quite a bit of games like Flicky and Hotel Mario
what are you talking only released in japan? it was ported to english on the cd-i as hotel mario
3:49 YOUR MISS!!
I HAD THIS GAME ON A PLUG AND PLAY IN LIKE 2005
Did you cover the entire Cotton series yet?
set this video to 1.5x speed - much more bearable
Door Door looks like Frantic Freddy for C64
omg i played this game
The trick to playing this game is to go through the Door Door.
Ha, the background music is from Dragon Quest. X3
What's the game shown at 2:56?
So this is also the birth of half the company that brought us Danganronpa and the Zero Escape Trilogy.
and Dragon Quest. Chunsoft created DQ.
Enix was strictly a publisher- they did not make any games themselves, all their published games were developed by other studios. That was the difference between them and Squaresoft, who did nearly all development in-house. Their opposite business models was one of the main points opponents of the merger cited for why the merger was a bad idea.
I wasn't so much thinking about Enix, Just spike and chunsoft. I remember taking note of the first time I seen "Spike Chunsoft" as a single trade mark. Weirdest thing at the time after seeing them as separate for so long. Was also weird watching Squaresoft and Enix merge. Squaresoft was "The Developer" of my time when I was in junior high and earlier.
Another game from Enix that never released in America is Terranigma. My favorite SNES game...
Soon.
I've heard of this game
My dad had it on a bootleg plug and play console called the "Game centa"
I avoided watching this video yesterday because it said it was made a year ago.... But.. Now it's made today????????
Hey unrelated question Is there dykg YTP?
Do GIOGIO'S Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind
Perhaps can we get a Captain Rainbow region locked?
OMG ITS THE PRECUSOR TO HOTEL MARIO
My name is Jeff
Illusion of Gaia Woooooo!
So, if it wasn't for this game, Metal Gear won't even exist?
Also, this is the game was also referenced/parodied in the credits of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory and its remake. I actually thought they were making a parody of Hotel Mario at first.
Something tells me Hodor wouldn't like playing this game.
can you do a game that is not from japan, and is instead from some other countries like germany or anything else for that matter of fact?
Could you give some examples? Forgive my ignorance, but I've heard of very few games released in Europe that weren't released elsewhere, and most of those were still Japanese games that only saw a European release (e.g. Terranigma).
I would say though that many of these videos have focused on famous companies or franchises as well and, again, I'm familiar with few companies or franchises not from North America or Japan (only Ubisoft comes to mind).
Doesn't mean they don't exist, I'm just stating my personal point of view and experience.
"That never reached America", unless your grandma bought that 76000-games-in-one systems from the mall before they got removed.
I always thought Squaresoft was the Japanese branch of Square Enix, that made games like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Parasite Eve, and Final Fantasy and Enix was the western group of developers they own... Eidos, IO Interactive, Crystal Dynamics, etc.
Does it actually use Dragon Warrior music, or did you just decide to use it in the video?
We just decided to use the music as it was a little bit more interesting for the video... The Door Door music is quite repetitive and a little grating behind a voice over.
I am probably getting hate for suggesting this but can you do a regionlocked on some of the newer digimon games that didn't get released outside Japan? Like Digimon World ReDigitize en ReDigitize Decode or Digimon Adventure for the psp? I can get kinda get why some of the old games didn't get a western release (like some of them were on the wonderswan) but I find the reason for the newer ones more puzzling.
Cool
Hotel Mario before Hotel Mario
You have to die in order to re-open a door for someone?
What a price to pay for good manners...
Can you talk about another game from Enix called Mystic Ark?
Talk about Joy Mech Fight next time!
It's a trap'em up. There are quite a few of those.
Do a region locked on Mother 1\earthbound zero\earthbound beginnings
but the game was released in America, as earthbound beginnings way later. this series is for the Japanese exclusives that are not well known in outside japan
Justin Acosta they did one for mysterious murasame ninja castle which had released outside of japan but the mothr series has really been done so many times any earthbound reviw will explain the history and why the games never got localized
Hotel Mario stole this.
Oof, that Kojima pic though.
The actual image is called 'GoodRiddanceKonami.jpg'
I agree that door door would be one of the best Famicom games
Can we get someone else to narrate these? It's been the same guy for these episodes and honestly, I just find him sounding less like an enthusiastic guy talking about games he likes that no one has seen, and more like a professor telling you about something he finds boring.
What's up dude, thanks for your feedback.
Believe me, I'm working on it. Imagine what I sound like when I'm not trying to sound enthusiastic...
The Moon Moon of Square Enix
Oooh
Did Liam just surgically remove his accent and change his name to Greg
