Terranigma is an extraordinary game and considered to be one of the best SNES titles out there. A shame that America hasn't seen it. However, this video doesn't really cover the real reason why the game is so great. The plot described here is just the beginning of the game. Afterwards you travel to all continents of the earth, not only to discover them, but also to recreate them. You are restoring all plants on earth, then all animals, afterwards the humans and so on. It's a really great adventure where every action has a huge impact on the world and shapes it.
I'm a diehard FF9 Fan and I consider Terranigma the second best game I ever played. The story, the finale everything was really a hidden gem. I loved the finale and the soundtrack Is amazing too.
Also the bird sanctuary was missing the y, Moscow was spelled Mosque, Neo Tokio, and look at the map. Why is that loch in Scotland the size of Lake Victoria, where is California, why is the Mississippi River called the Colorado, and Scandinavia is Scandia? Great game, anyway.
@@AJHyoton I actually think a lot of those were on purpose which just added to its charm and mystique, like there were a lot of similar elements to our current reality cycle but since it was a different iteration, some things were different like many of the names and events. Similar, yet different (Columbus sailing in the year 286 for example). "Mosque" was an allusion to religious fanaticism. I interpreted it as the world that was destroyed before was our world today, showing us where we are heading (Beruga had won the nobel prize in the last cycle)
@@AJHyoton Some of those were text length limits, Scandia. and Sanctuar both use 8 characters and are both shortened. You also encounter Greenld. (Greenland) and GreCliff. (I presume GreyCliff.) It seems to me that the game has a maximum of 8 characters and therefore it had to work around it. But I agree Scotland looks ridiculous, and I didn’t realise that the river was misnamed as I don’t know my US geography. NeoTokio was a deliberate choice I fell, and Mosque actually isn’t short for Moscow, in Japanese the town is called “Grand Musoku City”, which was translated as Mosque because there wasn’t enough space for Grand and City in 8 characters. I agree the translation is definitely spotty though and has some weird choices in places, like the expensive dress shop in Loire is localised weirdly, and also in Loire there is a control code issue in the test, leading to a woman skipping her first line and just saying “stress that works for M.me Pampilo’s.”, I assume she meant to say “Marily is a seamstress that works for Madam Pampilo’s.”
Terranigma was one of my favorite games as a child and I still play it to this day. The darker and more mature themes really resonated with me and created a unique experience that no other game has been able to provide.
Lufia 2 : Rise of the Sinistrals was pretty dark as well, also a sad ending...there was soooo much to do in the game, THEN YOU REACH THE ANCIENT CAVE AARRGGHH!!! ACTION REPLAY CODES PLEASE??
This game featured some amazing music. I remember letting the somber intro play until the splash screen where Ark stands on collapsed structures in the underworld looking at a distant planet Earth as the music explodes triumphantly. Awe-inspiring stuff to a kid.

Blame it on Nintendo for choosing to localize the game to Europeans after the Enix Shutdown of 1995, but not the world's largest gaming market, North Americans. Even when Enix restarted their North American operations in 1999, Terranigma was never released for the SNES or PS One.
I got it now. It's incredible, too. We didn't get it back in 1995 due to Robotrek's dismal sales, but even so, a lot of Japanese titles have been released here and there for American SNES and it has opened up all that was missing from the 90's.
This game, it really was a dream playing through it back then. There wasn't any experience like it in Europe (we didn't have Chrono Trigger or FF6). Maybe only Secret of Mana was on par. The story, the concepts (imagine how sad I was when you couldn't talk to animals any more), the music, the world building. What an insanely good game. And again: the music. My God, it's awesome. There are orchestral versions of it. I can highly recommend them.
Mate we didn't get Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy IV either. Hell I'm probably forgetting more games we didn't get. That's not even accounting for the whole 50hz shit we had until the Dreamcast introduced 60hz gaming to us on a home console.
Still gives me the chills. For me, it's "The Underworld". It really makes you feel how tragic it is that there is no overworld (yet) and it shows how damned the underworld is. Really puts you in the mood for this game. Remember the zombie town? :-o That was so scary.
One of the best games I ever played period. Finished it just last year and by fuckin head was fuckin blown away to shit. I can only imagine how overwhelming it was back in the day.
My channel has a lot of Terranigma videos, thats how much I liked it, feel free to check it out, the more people realize how good Terranigma is, the better it is, the game is a serious hidden gem taht deserves more recognition
There's so much good I can say about this game, it is probably my most favourite from ALL SNES games I have played. The soundtrack is gorgeous and captivating, the story delivers really strong emotions (first in freezing the people in your village, then discovering the ability to talk with plants and animals in the overworld AND THEN, as the story progresses, your loss of your ability to communicate with them) and leaves several major choices throughout the story which will have a big impact on the game world (how fast - if at all - cities and villages progress). Truly an excellent game. If you need further proof just listen to the Underworld Theme. Then go play the game and enjoy many hours of excellent fun and good storytelling.
Did not know this. Thanks a lot! Should anyone read this and think of the comic that came with the game and was in Nintendo Power (Europe), this manga is different.
My favorite thing about this series is how everything looks very true to life with a lot of attention to detail. Angkor Wat in IoG looks exactly like it does in the real world, Loulan in Terranigma looks like a real Mongolian village of a certain region, you really feel like you're visiting these locations from around the world.
Discovering Terranigma wasn't released in the U.S. gives me a much better understanding why the developers of Cross-Code (who are mainly located in Europe) have such a love for this game. Both the main characters of Terranigma and Cross-Code even have the same level-up animation
This is truly one of the best games ever made. It's a hidden gem, a lost masterpiece. I could never get arround the idea that it's so unknown. It's story, scenarios, gameplay, music(oh god the music), everything about it is completely well crafted. I still remember the night I finished the game like it was yesterday. So glad I was able to experience Terranigma in my region. We missed out on a lot of Squaresoft RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI) supposedly due to poor sales of Secret of Mana.
Someone please help me solve this mystery: I'm an American and have always lived here. Somehow, I know I played this game sometime in the mid 90's. It's kind of a long story, but my grandmother played a lot of Super Nintendo back then. She was actually the one who introduced me to Zelda and Metroid. Anyway, one day I went to her house, and there it was, a new game called Terranigma. I played the first dungeon and unfortunately never got much farther (until completing it years later through emulation), but I remember loving the style and being really impressed by the overworld effect (its unique concave look helps me know I'm not misremembering some other game). Years later, I discovered this game apparently was never released here. So how is my experience playing it possible? My only theory is that my grandmother ordered it from some kind of catalogue, which would make some sense because that was how she bought VSH tapes, too. Was such a service available at the time? Could American SNES hardware play a game specially ordered from Europe? I know this I a late comment, but I'm dying to solve this mystery and any help would be much appreciated.
Dear Greg, thank you for this wonderful retrospective coverage of Terranigma. Terranigma was without a doubt the best RPG available to us Europeans up until the release of Suikoden in April 1997 and also the best game of the 4th generation console era for us Europeans. It's such a pity of what became of Quintet after this title, and it's so unfortunate that our friends in North America couldn't experience this masterpiece in 1996.
As someone that only had a passive SNES experience, meaning I only played it in bits since a relative in another state owned one. I played Chrono Trigger on the DS back in 2016, the experience was incredible and recommendations peaked me. This same interest, if not, more excitement has swelled inside me as I've immediately found a review that sold me in playing this game. I immediately see this as something next to Chrono Trigger in quality.
I've read the comments sections and the lack of mention about Leim the Lion cub aches my heart....tahts got the be the most charming quest on a game. Leim isnt your typical annoying little kid, its a brave yet adorable Lion Cub, he is both badass AND chamring along with that amazing song!!
Terranigma was one of my fav rpgs growing up. It’s music, the story and the worlds u visited made it a joy to play. The ending was really emotional and stayed with you. Would love for a remaster if this or re release
Yes and it only gets better from there. This game's soundtrack is truly amazing. Though there's many good tracks left off the official CD soundtrack. Just get the SFC file so you can listen to it all.
Such a bummer that this was never re-released even here in Europe. Just the cartridge itself is insanely expensive, the German version costs over 70 USD, and the English one can cost hundreds.
I remember playing this one as ROM on an emulator right after I finished the Final Fantasy trilogy for the SNES, a friend of mine recomended me playing Terranigma, great game with a sad ending.
I am so glad I live in a time where some games that used to be only in one place can be bought online and you could play them then after they arrive at your own home... Well... some have very limited copies but it's not as bad for games as it used to be.
I really want to know what the key people of Quintet are up to after quietly shutting down. Tomoyoshi Miyazaki's last work was a designer for the Inuyasha game on PS2.
Besides this game being a huge influence and cornerstone of my childhood, I highly suggest anyone interested check out the Soundtrack. It's absolutely mind blowing
The Soul Blazer trilogy is amazing. Terranigma is solid. I am glad someone else is actually talking about it because Square-Enix and Nintendo sure are not.
YES. This was one of the most defining 16-bit games of my childhood, bar none. Hell it might just be in my top 3 SNES games of no particular order. I still have the game, with the box and instructions too. I also have Illusion of Time/Gaia, which follows right behind in quality. IoT/G has a hilariously bad translation but kid me didn't care.
This game really is a must play. Gameplay is fantastic. Story is interesting with some really crazy moments. Translation is a little weird at times but it's fine
I never knew the US never got Terranigma. It is probably one of my favorite games of all times. The whole Soul Blazer trilogy is fantastic, but that game was particularly ahead of its time.
Seriously. Terranigma is my favorite SNES game, though that has to be subjective. But I can hardly imagine it being anywhere south of the top 10 games on the system. It is such a shame the US never got this and it is, as such, rather unknown over there. It is also a tremendous missed opportunity to not have this on the SNES mini for exactly that reason.
As a European, I wish this was released in america, it would have gotten much more deserved recognition, To me this is a true gem, and easily in the Top 5 RPGs, alongside Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, TLOZ A Link To the Past and Earthbound
Been waiting for you all to take a look at this since I heard about the series. It's my absolute favorite RPG of all time. Thanks for putting it in the limelight!
Terranigma is my favorite game of all time..the sound track, the game play, the story, it's the perfect SNES game, I encourage everyone who hasnt played this game to give it a try
I doubt it. The information is publicly available. Also both videos have totally different focuses. The EC one is about the demise of Quintet as a developer specifically. The Region Locked video is about the demise of Enix Co before it was bought and how that made the game release only in NTSC-J and PAL.
I understand they're different. I wasn't criticizing them, I just didn't know if it was coincidence or if Quintet had an anniversary coming up or something that channels like this were latching onto. As evidenced by their response below, looks like it was coincidence!
Terranigma was never published in North America due to the Enix Shutdown of November 1995. Nintendo chose to ignore the world's largest gaming market, North Americans, as they were left out of this game in favour of a smaller counterparts like Europeans. They didn't even released the game for the Canadian market though British and Canadian English have many similarities. However, Enix restarted their North American operations in 1999.
There is a lesser known fourth to the Soul Blazer "trilogy". It's a PS1 game called Granstream Saga. I believe it was part of the trilogy as a spiritual successor due to the team making it. I do enjoy it even though it is a low rated game and I still believe it to be part of the Soul Blazer series.
I remember playing this as a kid, was such a good game, i don't think i fully grasped the concepts and the twist at the end until i replayed it as an adult.
Terranigma..... what a magnificent fucking game, i was lucky of playing it. Story, characters, locations, theme, music, god fucking dammit, this is a goddam Gem.
This game was my childhood. Absolutely worth playing, one of the best RPGs I played. But after showing it to a friend, I recommend having a walkthrough ready just in case
Enix had to take some blame for their dismal North American sales as a result of lack of harmonization and branding with its Japanese counterparts, leading to the temporary Enix Shutdown from November 1995 - 1999. In the case of their Dragon Warrior games, their monsters had less EXP than their similar Japanese "Dragon Quest" counterparts. The result was that North American versions were harder and more time spent grinding. Even "The 7th Saga" was more difficult for grinding and stat building than the Japanese equivalent , "Elnard". Game branding harmonization was another problem as they didn't use the same titles as Japanese counterparts. Some examples included Dragon Warrior for Dragon Quest (you can blame Dungeons and Dragons and their registered trademark "DragonQuest"), Soul Blazer for Soul Blader, "The 7th Saga" for Elnard. This lack of brand and content harmonization were two reasons why Enix had terrible North American sales during the early 1990s.
Ah yes, one of my favorite childhood games. I feel bad for those who were unable to play it. Also, fun fact: Yomi's name in the German version of the game is, amusingly, 'Fluffy'.
The German translation was superb. It feels more emotional and feels like it has a darker tone to it, really amazing. It was the first game that I decided I'll never sell
Not having any of Quintet games (except Actraiser) on virtual consoles makes me angry beyond belief. IMO, Terranigma has one of the best soundtracks of any game ever.
oh, I bought Terranigma some years ago used in a store, I didn´t knew that it was a japan & Europe exclusive :O and that the game have a full german translation!!! that makes things MUCH easier for me :D
The gameplay for this looks so much like the DBZ: Legacy of Goku (and Buu's Fury) games for the GBA. It's nice knowing where some of my favorite childhood games so clearly get their inspiration from.
Terranigma is probably the most epic RPG on SNES. Chrono Trigger is an all-around better game IMO but there's just something about the death and rebirth of the world in Terranigma that is handled so well. Really absorbing atmosphere, and incredible music. I only wish there was a way to play this game LEGALLY in the U.S. I would buy this instantly on Virtual Console.
I really wish they put this on the SNES classic, because I always thought this game deserves more recognition, and I love to talk about it whenever the topic of old games comes up. Sure there are emulators, but not many people seem to know about this game to begin with, so there's no way they'd look specifically for this game. :o Hopefully, since this video is out, more people can look into this game if interested and get to play it. c:
I'm surprised it never came to the Wii's Virtual Console. If it had, it certainly would've come to North America as well (for an extra dollar like all the import titles on the VC).
I completed this game about a year ago. Hands down, one of the best games I've played. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who'd want to play a classic SFC RPG.
I have to comment on that since it's my favourite game of ALL time. It's really a pitty for the Americans that we in Europe got Chrono Trigger at one day (which was their highly ranked game) but they never got the brilliant masterpiece Terragnigma in return. Thanks for covering it in a video. There are a bunch of things though you didn't mention about the game, but I guess it's best to experience it yourself. I did a 100% Let's Play about it in the past, but unfortunately (for the mainly English speaking crowd) it's the German version which has a few minor differences in translation to the English version since it was translated as most of the SNES RPG from the infamous Claude M. Moyse giving some of the NPC's dialogue a bit of a crude humour .
Great to see this gem get some attention. Fun, straight forward action gameplay, great storyline, excellent graphics, and one of the best soundtracks to ever grace gamer ears. Only Chrono Trigger tops it in my books.

I've read the comments sections and the lack of mention about Leim the Lion cub aches my heart....tahts got the be the most charming quest on a game. Leim isnt your typical annoying little kid, its a brave yet adorable Lion Cub, he is both badass AND chamring along with that amazing song!!
My 9 year old mind was blown away by the story and the soundtrack!
Terranigma was one of my fav rpgs growing up. It’s music, the story and the worlds u visited made it a joy to play. The ending was really emotional and stayed with you. Would love for a remaster if this or re release
Is that the game's BGM? It's amazing .
Yes and it only gets better from there. This game's soundtrack is truly amazing. Though there's many good tracks left off the official CD soundtrack. Just get the SFC file so you can listen to it all.
The OST is giving me goosebumps and tears. Such an amazing game, with great emotional moments. One of my favorite alltime games and soundtracks
also checkout Roman Heuser's Orchestral cover versions on youtube! They are fantastic
He and his team seem to have vanished without a trace. Where could they all be nowadays?
Besides this game being a huge influence and cornerstone of my childhood, I highly suggest anyone interested check out the Soundtrack. It's absolutely mind blowing
I just wanted to point out that you sound REALLY excited about the potential of a full, uncensored European release.
Terranigma and Sansara Naga 2(Directed by Mamoru Oshii) are one of the best RPGs that never released in the US.
The Soul Blazer trilogy is amazing. Terranigma is solid. I am glad someone else is actually talking about it because Square-Enix and Nintendo sure are not.
Consider Cross Code if you want to play a loveletter to Terranigma and other RPGs of the golden SNES era.
This video (and a few other reviews) made me buy the game off of ebay, and I just beat it today. It really is one of the best RPGs on SNES.
How has this not been localized yet? Bring it to Switch, the whole trilogy. SquareEnix needs to do it, now is the time.
This game really is a must play. Gameplay is fantastic. Story is interesting with some really crazy moments. Translation is a little weird at times but it's fine
One of my favourite games of all time. I absolutely loved the story, characters and soundtrack!
One of my favorite games ever and it always surprises me when people who love rpgs don't know what I'm talking about when I mention this game
Most underrated game in history by far
As a European, I wish this was released in america, it would have gotten much more deserved recognition, To me this is a true gem, and easily in the Top 5 RPGs, alongside Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, TLOZ A Link To the Past and Earthbound
such a friggin classic. thank you for talking about this and giving it the exposure it deserves. Quintet/Enix for life!!!
Now this is a good old game
The OST is amazing. I rate it on the same level as Nier.
pls Square Enix we want a Remake of this awesome Game!
Had this as a kid and didn't realise how lucky I was to have played this growing up at the time, by far one of my favourite games of all time period!
America got Chrono Trigger, we europeans got Terranigma... we both won and lost at the same time.
Do you guys and Extra Credits share notes or something?
Was thinking that myself - second video on this game (well that one was on the entire series) I've seen this week XD
I doubt it. The information is publicly available. Also both videos have totally different focuses. The EC one is about the demise of Quintet as a developer specifically. The Region Locked video is about the demise of Enix Co before it was bought and how that made the game release only in NTSC-J and PAL.
We've actually had this script knocking about for a while now, I can tell you it was purely coincidence!
Thanks for watching!
- Greg
I want to live in the alternate universe where I got to play this as a kid in America.
Malisin same(:
I got a repro of this game a few years ago, and man, it's incredible in every way. Fantastic soundtrack.
I love this game so much. it's an authentic journey with heart and soul. the music and graphics are great and it has one hell of a story.
Looks kind of like Secret of Mana.
Terranigma is a great game
Mind Blowing when you add: Japanese Game + European Release + Uncensored...
Illusion of gaia logo looks like the legened of zelda logo
i was today's years old when I learned about the magirock refund... xD
I discovered this game 16 years ago when I was 14. I fell in love. It is easily my favorite snes game.
Very cool game, played in early 2000s.
This is one of my favorites
This game is amazing.
I was a lucky 10 yo, finding the rom of this to emulate 17 years ago.
Favorite SNES game next to DKC2.
Terranigma is one of my all time favorite games. It's one of the few times that being an EU gamer was advantageous.
This is my favorite game on the snes. We were lucky enough to get this in Australia 😁😁😁
I agree, except there's one single thing that always annoyed me in the German version.
Holerö...
Not having any of Quintet games (except Actraiser) on virtual consoles makes me angry beyond belief.
IMO, Terranigma has one of the best soundtracks of any game ever.
oh, I bought Terranigma some years ago used in a store, I didn´t knew that it was a japan & Europe exclusive :O
and that the game have a full german translation!!! that makes things MUCH easier for me :D
The gameplay for this looks so much like the DBZ: Legacy of Goku (and Buu's Fury) games for the GBA. It's nice knowing where some of my favorite childhood games so clearly get their inspiration from.
This game was amazing, and the music was wonderful. I still listen to the underworld theme frequently.
Great game, maybe it lacks polish on some areas but overall it's a very good game with a very moving story.
My favourite game ever. And I have played thousands.
I really wish they put this on the SNES classic, because I always thought this game deserves more recognition, and I love to talk about it whenever the topic of old games comes up. Sure there are emulators, but not many people seem to know about this game to begin with, so there's no way they'd look specifically for this game. :o
Hopefully, since this video is out, more people can look into this game if interested and get to play it. c:
Please talk about net neutrality
I'm surprised it never came to the Wii's Virtual Console. If it had, it certainly would've come to North America as well (for an extra dollar like all the import titles on the VC).
I completed this game about a year ago. Hands down, one of the best games I've played. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who'd want to play a classic SFC RPG.
I love this game, my second favorite SNES title.
I used to play this on zsnes all the time!
Moyse giving some of the NPC's dialogue a bit of a crude humour .
darkIkarus if only they got it... Then we would have gotten a level editor etc. from hackers. But sadly it never happened...
Great to see this gem get some attention. Fun, straight forward action gameplay, great storyline, excellent graphics, and one of the best soundtracks to ever grace gamer ears. Only Chrono Trigger tops it in my books.
