    I bought a Touch & Sew 620 in a cabinet in Salvation Army so, I can put my Singer 66 in the cabinet. Last night I oiled the 620 up and saw only metal gears. It sews great and I’m having my husband swap the Singer 66 out of the T&S’s cabinet. Also, I’m a newbie in repair but I think putting lubricant on plastic gears isn’t a good idea especially if it’s petroleum based. And your timing fix doesn’t follow what I’ve seen on RUclips. Great job on the gear replacement.

    I think you made a great video. I have this exact same machine, It belonged to my grandmother. When I got it, all 5 gears were broken and falling apart. Thanks to the internet and videos like yours, I figured out what parts I needed and how to fix it and got it running again. Figuring out the hook timing was tough. A few weeks ago, the hook drive gear broke again. I ordered an up graded set of hook drive gears (#382877) with angled teeth from singeronline.com. Your video was a great reminder on how to install them. I can't yet speak to how they work, because the horizontal rod on my machine would not slide through the right side horizontal timing gear at all, and I ended up breaking both timing gears to get the darn thing off. Now I've ordered an upgraded set of timing gears, and look forward to getting this machine running again. When this machine is running right, the fabric feeds evenly, its easy to feed curves and the motor has great torque.

    Nice explanations - thank you! On my Singer 628, I am trying to replace the vertical top gear, but found it not to have a set screw; rather, there are two tiny metal pins (180 degrees apart) that I am not able to remove. What do you suggest?

    • @heatherboek7374
      @heatherboek7374 4 года назад

      I figured it out - the pins were a single pin and had to be punched out. The replacement gear has the set screw, so that will make it easy to replace.

    This video is very helpful! However, how do you know which gear to buy (the name of the gear i.e. vertical, hook drive, etc.)?? I’m having the hardest time finding a diagram of the different gears & their functions. Any help is appreciated!!

    Nice video, if all were that simple all the time. Timing is actually done by using the needle bar timing marks, upper and lower, and positioning the hook point to the needle in Straight Stitch. The gear on the right with 2 setscrews is the timing gear. You can find instructions on my website for this too.Terry - tandtrepair

    All sewing machine users must learn to do this especially when you have sewing machine comes with plastic gears. However, dont assume that being plastic parts it cost less compared to metal parts. If you plan to buy sewing machine and you see plastic bobbins, plastic bobbin case, plastic gears - don't walk, run. Those sewing machine runs great at first, until it broke....(sooner than later).

  • @glockstitch

    I just broke all the gears on mine except the ones closest to the bobbin. Can you replace these with steel gears?

    • @SewAgainstTheGrain
      @SewAgainstTheGrain  5 лет назад +1

      Tyty .x oooo, good question. I think if you replace all the gears you can replace with metal. The older models of this machine had metal gears so it seems like a feasible swap...but I’m sure mixing metal and plastic gears is not a good idea.

    • @1953childstar

      @@SewAgainstTheGrain No.. The gears were meshed at the Singer factory and they were "run in" at very high speed with special external motors and abrasive paste was used in the process. This was finalized by a rinse with solvent. Even trained Singer repair persons were required to send the machines back to the factory for any repair involving a metal gear.

    Great video, but I cant slide the rod out. Any suggestions?

    • @SewAgainstTheGrain
      @SewAgainstTheGrain  5 лет назад

      Beauty Kitty you can use pliers to grasp the rod in the middle and slide it to the right, or you can push the left end of the rod (the little bit in the middle of the gear) with the tip of a screwdriver and slide it to the right. I had the best luck with pushing with a screwdriver when I did this repair.

      There may be 2 set screws to loosen on the gear or it will not slide

    thank you so much for this tutorial...i found a touch and sew 628 today, a little rough for wear and it so needs a clean but seems to work. i took the top off but havent looked underneath yet. the gears from the topside look really dirty and it smells old. can i clean this myself or should it be brought in for a tune up and clean?

    • @SewAgainstTheGrain
      @SewAgainstTheGrain  7 лет назад

      The old gears in the top of my machine are a dark brown color and smell bad too, but the machine runs fine as is. I didn't try to clean any of the gears, but my fear is that using any kind of cleaning solvent may do more damage than good. The plastic is so old at this point I probably wouldn't risk it. I would suggest taking it to a professional to have it cleaned or replacing the top gears all together yourself.

      Sew Against The Grain thanks for advice and i think ill be bringing it in. as much as i would like to use it as a learning tool for repair i think it may be too advanced lol...i opened up the bottom and the gears are metal but i think the stitch cam is plastic...there's a plastic plate with location 'elizabeth new jersey'? stamped on it. thx for demo on changing gears, it totally helped when i was looking at the machine😊

      I don’t think there are sizes. Your best bet is to order one by the part number:
      Singer #163997

    I enjoyed this video. I like your teaching style! I have a similar machine (model 636), but it has a broken top vertical gear. Do you have a video on how to replace that gear? Thank you & keep up the great work!

      Hi! I have the same machine and I love the clarity of Mona's video here and will be using it to do some troubleshooting after I fixed my Singer Touch & Sew 636. For help with replacing my top gear, I used More350Power's videos that you can search on youtube. He has a series of about 4 videos on taking the whole machine apart and that's what I followed to replace all my old and worn out gears. I hope that helps!

    I replaced all the gears on my machine the same as this one pretty easy to do I use the timing marks on the upper vertical shaft but the gears on top where the motor is that's the tough ones only because my fingers are big and it's hard to get in there but I did get it and I would say replace all the gears

      lisalu910 thankfully the one gear in this video is the only victim of time in my machine...so far. If you need to replace the gear on the bottom-right of the machine I ran across several videos on that repair when doing research for this gear replacement.
