His training technique is excellent--no wasted words ( you can always run the video again) and always in the correct sequence. just like with written step-actions. It would have been better to have no tv and talking in the background. I appreciated his tips about carefully saving screws and clips. Excellent info about how to time the needle and hook.
The only video I could find explaining dog foot to needle bar timing. Once this step was complete I could time the needle and hook. Thanks for making and sharing this video.
Woo Hoo!!!! I couldn't be more excited. I have a Singer Touch Tronic that is 37 years old. It was sewing beautifully as usual the my fabric seemed to get stuck then a noise like something breaking inside and rattled around then would not sew at all. I've been sewing since I was 9 years old and I'm 71 sew I know a little bit but I've never worked on the inside of a sewing machine. I've always taken them in for service. I'm on a limited income now so I went on RUclips and started searching for the problem. I found a video of my exact machine and learned how to take the bottom off then it showed the plastic gear that operates the bobbin was broken in half and half had fallen to bottom. The other half stayed put so at least I knew where it was supposed to go. The author of the video then proceeded to put up a link on how to repair it. It was this video. So I watched it then went to the website and ordered the parts. The one that broke was about $27 with shipping. I ordered the one that it corresponds to it for $9.98. I also bought a can of gear grease. Tonight I put my laptop next to my machine and proceeded it repair it. It took me a few tries to get my timing just right but I did it. I'm so pleased. For about $40 in parts and grease I saved probably at least $100.00. I'm so glad that people are willing to make videos to help us. God bless you! And the person that pointed me to you.
very thorough, informative and helpful video, if you did that 7 years ago, I can imagine what quality video you could generate now days with a smart phone. I learned so much from this information, I am in the process of fixing 2 singer machines with broken gears. Thanks a million,
I just finished replacing the gears and setting the timing on my sewing machine (same model) thanks to your excellent video. I used Sewing Parts Online gears that I ordered from your website, and they fit perfectly. I could not have accomplished this myself without your video or the quick service that your company provided. Thank you very much!
Thank you SO MUCH for this. The feed dog on my machine stopped moving and after watching took the bottom of my machine off to find pieces of the feed drive gear. Just ordered a new set and can't wait for them to arrive. Going to try sliding the gear down where there's still teeth left to finish sewing the ~2' left needed to complete my project.
You saved me! Thanks so much! Right at 12:00 was what I needed for timing the thread hook to the needle. I never knew I'd end up knowing so much about sewing machines today.
Great video! Our model was a bit different, but the excellent discussion of how to time the dog foot/needle and the bobbin/needle was invaluable. Thank you so very much! Sews great now!
Can't wait till my parts come in so I can fix my machine and be able to sew again. I do alot of different crafts and bounce from on thing to the other and love to sew. Will be watching for the mailman next week!
This is a great help: I've just mended my first feed dog gears by moving one of them along to make use of the part of the horizontal pinion that was still in good shape. But it'll last a year or two but no more, then I'll have to change the whole thing. But your video has given me the courage to do it!!! Thanks!

Hello, Thanks for this video, it is just what I needed. I just have one question. Another sewing machine mechanic that I enjoy watching on RUclips says never to grease up the plastic gears, because in the long run it causes them to deteriorate, so I’m just wondering about this??? Thank you. This was very useful information. Your video gave me the motivation and the belief that I could open my machine and find out why my bobbin was not turning even when everything else appeared to be working. Sure enough one of the bevel gears was broken. I think I am going to take your advice and replace them all. Heading over to your website now to order! Hope you have express delivery, as I am currently on vacation and had planned to do a lot of sewing before my machine went kaput...temporarily. The only thing I would have added would have been some information on how to clean the old gunk (lubricant) off the gears before applying new lubricant.

Thank you very much, my first time, this video was invaluable! I used this to help change the feed gears on an old Singer 7136. Have a great day and thanks again.
I will have to change the gears on my singer 478 one of them broke they were made of plastic and were very dry so I will try to put new ones in thanks for your great information you have great information thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video. It's great. I have already loosened the screws and removed the retaining ring. The bar moves a lot but does not finish leaving. It is locked, as if something is hooked, but I can't find anything. It doesn't let me take the bevel gear off the drive shaft. A help please.

Hello. Loved the video. My hubby and I found it very very helpful and actually got 4 gears replaced and it timed well for straight sewing. Two things tho...when I zig-zag it missed on the right stitch about every 5-7 stitches and the tension was really loose, but the straight stitch is perfect. Also, in the video the long gear was timed and we weren’t able to see what an “untimed” long gear might cause a problem with. My machine dog track seems to move well according to the vid. So if anyone has any suggestions for why it won’t zig-zag properly, I’d really really appreciate the help. Thanks DK
I just had the gears replaced in my sewing machine (Singer 860 Diana). It is 40 years old and this is the first time for any repairs! I watched your video after i got my machine home again. You have a great tutorial although I still feel the job of replacing those gears would be a bit too much to take on myself. So I did take off the bottom part under the bobbin area and could see the new gears and yes they had all been lubricated. (The original gears were not plastic and one of the features when purchased was that no greasing was required). I am a bit confused as I did hear not to put machine oil on gears but to add gear grease - does this apply only plastic gears or any gear? Hope you can help me as I want to keep my machine in top condition and running well for at least another 40 years! Thank you
I am glad the video did help some. Per our technician, he recommends bringing it to a local technician if the video didn't cover the needed information. Thank you for watching.
What kind of grease is that and do you sell it on line? I was all ways told never to grease plastic gears. Great video would love to see more like this one!!!!
+Craig Ferry Gear grease at Autozone. You will find two kinds, the red one and the brown one. Obviously Sewing Parts Online chose the red one. I hope that helps.
Can this work for a singer 4562, mines doesn't look to different than this one, also do you sell the right gears for this machine, I didn't see them on your website... Thanks so much for sharing, awesome video!
Hello Bernie! If you would like to get new feed dog gears for your machine, we do have them available! You can view those gears via the link below: www.sewingpartsonline.com/feed-dog-gear-set-singer-383273as.aspx
Hello! I followed this video and replaced my hook gears and fixed my timing but when I put it back together my foot pedal is no longer doing anything. Is this a problem that can be solved by replacing my foot pedal?
I am replacing gears in Singer 834 machine but the back long gear is stuck on shaft. I have oiled it, cleaned all old oil and gunk off, tried to move it with punch and rubber hammer to no avail. Would appreciate any help in getting this removed so I can replace with new gears.
Lois, I am very sorry. I'm not a technician. This is the only video that we have available on gears. Our technician recommends bringing your machine in to a local technician if this video doesn't help.
hi. do you do any repairs on the vintage Kenmore white machine? I bought one that needed paint so I painted it. I cant remember how some of it goes back together. I took pictures of what I could, like the bottom assembly, but can't figure out the arm that goes from the bottom up to the top inside. if I put it on one way it won't fit, if I put it on the other way, I can't get the screw in to attach it to the shaft that goes to the front of the top..I can text pictures of what I am talking about if that is possible. thanks for any help.
Hello, this is a great video, but am having problems with getting the rod to move out. I have a Stylist 534. Loosened all the screws on the long rod, but the rod will not budge but 1/8th". And I made sure I took the one clip off too. It seems the rod is larger on the left side of the place where the belt is attached. Am I loosing my mind? Do I need to do something different for this model? I know it is a bit different than the one you are showing because beneath the power unit there is another piece with 2 screws. Thank you so much for your help.
Hi there, I have the same machine AND need the same parts that you just changed can you Tell me where can I gett them, pase? You just changed 3 geats fight?
I had the hook drive gear replaced on my Singer 2010 Touch Tronic- it cost me $120 for the part and the labor. A few months later the same thing is happening, doesn't work. What are the names of the other 2 gears that would need to be replaced and where can I buy them? I bought the machine new in the 70's.
Hi! We can't be sure without looking at your machine in person, but it sounds like you need this set: www.sewingpartsonline.com/bevel-gear-set-singer-382980.aspx
do you have a video with how to get the feed dog timing (going up and down in sync with the needle support) correct? I have all new gears, and I know how to do the hook timing, but not the feed dog part.
Unfortunately, we do not have a video demonstrate that. However, we do have free repair advice. Give us a call at 888-824-1192 and ask to speak with Dennis regarding a repair questions. He's a great resource!
I want to do this on a Pfaff 463 and replace the Spur Gear #91-170909-92. You do not happen to have a video for that machine? I mean, the gear replacement. I noticed that you do not have this part available anymore. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
I want to replace the feed dog gears, and I tried to loose the screw at the bottom black plate (counterclockwise); however, I had a hard time loosening it, because the screw is otherwise overtighten. Therefore, I am stuck right there & could not do any further. Is there any hint I could overcome this obstacle??? Appreciate your advise.
Try soaking it in WD40 and letting it sit overnight. If you still can't get it out, drill it and use an easeout to remove it. The screw head is probably already damaged.
+Jeremy Kocourek Never ever use WD40 on a sewing machine. ONLY use sewing machine oil. I've fixed a few machines that were froze up with just sewing machine oil, cleaning it and working it by hand.
Hi, I am trying to follow your instructions for the gear replacement, however I'm struggling to take off the slim gear from the long shaft, despite taking off the screw it doesn't slide on the shaft at all. Any ideas what to do to help to take it off? Any help appreciated, thanks
Thank you for watching our video. I am sorry to report, without having the machine in front of us, there is not much more we can recommend. I recommend bringing your machine to a local technician that will install your gears for you.
Hi, I'm having the same problem with a Singer Stylist 834. It looks like the slim gear on the longer shaft has rusted? on to the shaft and won't slide off or move at all. Grateful for any help or ideas. Cheers.
@@baggiezbaggiez7757 Hi, it did bake on quite well on mine, managed to take it off in the end with couple of gentle but forceful whacks with a mallet, did the trick. Good luck!
Where can I purchase new gears for my Quantum XL-1 Machine. I love this machine but now it will not hold timing because of a cracked gear. I hope you can help.
Thanks. A feed dog gear on my Singer 534 broke and I was about to throw the whole machine out, but after watching your video, I have ordered feed dog gears! Also, Is there a way on this machine to adjust the height of the feed dog?
Please help me figure this out!!I am having the hardest time figuring out what happened to my singer merritt 9612 machine!! I went over a denim seam and now my driver ( I think its called a driver ,under the bobbin case and hook) won't go around or rotate. Singer sent me a parts manual but that don't help me figure out what's slipping or not grabbing , which is weird cause all the gears look good.I'm thinking it could be the drive shaft bevel gear but not the teeth side..
Hi, Kathy! We agree something must be slipping somewhere. In your case, your machine needs to be inspected by a technician to properly identify the problem. Your local sewing repair shop should be able to find the problem. I'm sorry we couldn't be of more help.
Sewing Parts Online I think it is the bevel gear as it all functions properly to that point...so I figure either the inside of the gear that locks on the driveshaft won't grab the drive shaft..I watched your video and I'm pretty sure I can fix it myself..I see you have it for sale., and if I heard your video correctly I should replace both bevel gears. And thank you so much for getting back with me! I will be following you from now on😊
IMHO, Feed timing should be timed with needle in and and plate on. As needle enters plate feed teeth should just have descended below the surface of the plate.
On 4:10 of video, you just unscrewed the gear and it slipped off, well mine doesn't budge and if I turn the gear it actually keeps spinning the bobbin cylinder as if I never removed it. Please help I have 776 Singer Stylist I just want to replace those two gears you show on that part of video, thanks
Hello Zeridah. I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble. Unfortunately, our video would give you an idea on how to take the gears off of a sewing machine. This can be different for every model, however. I would suggest taking your machine to a local technician to see if they might be able to help. I am sorry I could not provide more information.
hi! i broke the plastic gear located at the handwheel of my sewing machine after trying to repair it myself. can i still get it repaired in a repair shop? and is it expensive repair or not? im so nervous right now because i just got it and i was so reckless that i made it even worse :(( can someone answer me pls?
you took two clips off the shafts but i saw you put one back and the hook point looked past the needle and the shafts have flat spots on and it looked like the first screw in rotation was not put on the flat spot and why didnt you sew the machine off
I was taught by a technician, trained by Singer and Bernina, and with 40 years of experience, that plastic gears should never be greased. Grease can cause plastic gears to disintegrate. I suggest viewers do some additional research before lathering grease on their gears.
I was wondering whether "plastic" gears should be greased. My machine has never been serviced and when I opened it up, the gears had a white colored grease on them, apparently applied by the manufacturer when new. It may depend on whether the gears are made of "plastic", nylon or some other material. The video states he used "the best grease", but what exactly does that mean since there are different types of grease. It looks to me that he used a marine grade chasis/bearing grease.
Ok, I did locate some Singer lubricant here. They don't say what it is made out of; it's just called a lubricant. So, I would guess that would have the best chance of working in some, if not all, Singer models and probably in some other brands, also. www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-replacement-gears/products/singer-lubricant-pure-non-flowing-motor-gears I never noticed any problems with my machine, except maybe a little bit more noise while running, before I opened the machine to "lubricate it", but I think my gears were probably starting to get a little sticky from the lubricant being in there for a long time and starting to harden up on the gears. Maybe the gears were getting a bit brittle too because when I went to work scraping the lubricant off the gears (not wanting or knowing how to disassemble all the gears and shafts), I got too aggressive and split one of the gears. So, now I will need to do disassembly and replacement, ha, ha!
I followed this video to change my gears on a Singer 533. So I put a lot of grease. Now I don't know who to believe because in the other famous RUclips Channel "Andy Tube", Andy says to never put grease on plastic gears. ruclips.net/video/_SuIiVok64k/видео.html
I have a zig zag and stretch singer sewing machine model 717 the needle no longer goes up and down to sew. I can turn the wheel and it goes up and down but when i press the foot pedal it just stalls. aWhat do you think is wrong with it? Thank you for reading this.
Not a problem. You'll need the service manual: goo.gl/PRQsqP I also recommend giving us a call at 888-824-1192 and asking to speak with Dennis. He gives free repair advice. It might be a few days before he can call you back, but he is the expert. Good luck!
The gears should just go right into place. If you need any assistance just call 888-824-1192 and ask to speak top our technician. He can help you out with that.
Hi, Angelica! There are a few different indications of a gear problem. You may experience skipped stitches not resolved by needle troubleshooting or a thread change. You may have excessive play in your hook assembly. You may also notice that your hand wheel has intermittent resistance or even locks up.
You sold me the gears and now you tell me how to put them in and time them. Perfect

Also, in the video the long gear was timed and we weren’t able to see what an “untimed” long gear might cause a problem with. My machine dog track seems to move well according to the vid.
So if anyone has any suggestions for why it won’t zig-zag properly, I’d really really appreciate the help.
Thanks DK
Please email us at info@sewingpartsonline.com and we can forward you to our technician so he can troubleshoot the problem. Thank you!
Thank You very much.Dzięki Tobie naprawiłem swoją maszynę do szycia.
(The original
gears were not plastic and one of the features when purchased was that no greasing was required).
Thank you so much for this video i repaired my feed dog by myself
Thank you for a great video. This saved me a lot of time.
We are happy you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching!
What a great explanation, God bless...
Thankyou..i have to change gears of mine singet 513 ,very useful
ours is a Singer Stylist 834, as in this video
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Great how to video, Thank you.
That Andy Tube could learn a thing or two from you on how to make a clear and simple sewing machine instructional video
Thank you for watching!!
Can this work for a singer 4562, mines doesn't look to different than this one, also do you sell the right gears for this machine, I didn't see them on your website... Thanks so much for sharing, awesome video!
Great video but a caution to test the needle point clearance to the hook plate with the needle in the right & left position.
Thank you for your feedback!
Great Stuff! I have a Singer Stylist Model 514 that needs new feed gears....

Hi! I recommend giving us a call and asking to speak with our technician, Dennis. He will be able to help. Our number is 888-824-1192
Thank you and I will give you a call in the next few days. I appreciate the reply.
Hi I also replaced 2 gears that were broken but now my needle is not centered like it's hitting something. Can you help me?
That's also a great question for Dennis. He's the expert!
Having trouble with my White 165 not making a proper stitch.. Any suggestions.

Hi! We sell numerous gears fitting many different machines. May I have the make and model of your sewing machine?
Hi there, I have the same machine AND need the same parts that you just changed can you Tell me where can I gett them, pase? You just changed 3 geats fight?
Excellent!
Hi! We can't be sure without looking at your machine in person, but it sounds like you need this set: www.sewingpartsonline.com/bevel-gear-set-singer-382980.aspx
it's a pity today that machines are made with plastic parts........which is why all metal vintage machines are sought after now!
Agreed. Are plastic parts difficult to replace? Metal replacement parts available ?
Unfortunately it seems that some plastics deteriorate at the contact of grease...
Many thanks for sharing Uk
i need to kno which part i need to purchase since i plug my 110 machine 220 and it get damage
do you have a video with how to get the feed dog timing (going up and down in sync with the needle support) correct?
Hi! We have gears for your machine here: www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-quantum-xl1-sewing-machine-parts.aspx#filter:ptype_gmcfeed_1:$2520Gears
+Sewing Parts Online What type of grease did you use? Isn't it best to use a singer grease?
Our technician recommends this grease: www.sewingpartsonline.com/synthetic-grease-tri-flow-23004.aspx
@@SewingPartsOnline 7
you took two clips off the shafts but i saw you put one back and the hook point looked past the needle and the shafts have flat spots on and it looked like the first screw in rotation was not put on the flat spot and why didnt you sew the machine off
I was taught by a technician, trained by Singer and Bernina, and with 40 years of experience, that plastic gears should never be greased. Grease can cause plastic gears to disintegrate. I suggest viewers do some additional research before lathering grease on their gears.
I just oiled my machines gears to get the sew. mach. unstuck. Will that be okay? I think I need to replace them.
Carolyn: Oil will probably not stay on the gears for very long and it may damage the gears if they are "plastic".
+munsters2 oil WILL damage the plastic/nylon gears.
Ok, I did locate some Singer lubricant here. They don't say what it is made out of; it's just called a lubricant. So, I would guess that would have the best chance of working in some, if not all, Singer models and probably in some other brands, also.
www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-replacement-gears/products/singer-lubricant-pure-non-flowing-motor-gears
I never noticed any problems with my machine, except maybe a little bit more noise while running, before I opened the machine to "lubricate it", but I think my gears were probably starting to get a little sticky from the lubricant being in there for a long time and starting to harden up on the gears. Maybe the gears were getting a bit brittle too because when I went to work scraping the lubricant off the gears (not wanting or knowing how to disassemble all the gears and shafts), I got too aggressive and split one of the gears. So, now I will need to do disassembly and replacement, ha, ha!
what kind of grease is that? it's a very large can... and very thick. do we really need to put that much on? will it harden over time and get gookey?
I followed this video to change my gears on a Singer 533. So I put a lot of grease. Now I don't know who to believe because in the other famous RUclips Channel "Andy Tube", Andy says to never put grease on plastic gears. ruclips.net/video/_SuIiVok64k/видео.html
I have a zig zag and stretch singer sewing machine model 717 the needle no longer goes up and down to sew. I can turn the wheel and it goes up and down but when i press the foot pedal it just stalls. aWhat do you think is wrong with it? Thank you for reading this.
It could be one of many things, but I think it might be your belt. Do you have a local sewing machine repair shop?
Sewing Parts Online I was hoping I could fix myself.
Not a problem. You'll need the service manual: goo.gl/PRQsqP
I also recommend giving us a call at 888-824-1192 and asking to speak with Dennis. He gives free repair advice. It might be a few days before he can call you back, but he is the expert. Good luck!
I have Pfaff machine. Can anybody help me

my singer machine model 1022 when i sew the foot doesn't move. any idea how i can fix it?
Hi! I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. Is your Walking Foot that isn't moving? Or the are the feed dogs not moving?
nice👍
Great!!
My cord to my foot pedal will work for awhile then I stop and have to jiggle the part the goes into the machine
Hi, Emma! I'm sorry your foot controller isn't working properly - it's likely time to replace it. What is the make and model or your sewing machine?
I'm so mad my bf keeps stalling fixing my machine. I hope he reads this. Everyone tell him to get going... I have things I need to sew....
So....there is no need to space the gears with a feeler gage or anything?
The gears should just go right into place. If you need any assistance just call 888-824-1192 and ask to speak top our technician. He can help you out with that.

how do you know is a gear problem? ???
Hi, Angelica! There are a few different indications of a gear problem. You may experience skipped stitches not resolved by needle troubleshooting or a thread change. You may have excessive play in your hook assembly. You may also notice that your hand wheel has intermittent resistance or even locks up.
Sewing Parts Online . yes, my handwheel has the resistance, I thought it was the belt....thank you. ..I like to watch your videos.
Thank you for watching!
