Shaper sheet material is very easy to use for a variety of model layout applications. I wish Kim had started by describing what shaper sheet is made of and why that layering adds to the usability of the material. I'm using it to build a stream valley and the ability to create polls and riffles by altering the stream bed profile is an added feature of this material. Try it.
Brava, Kim!! That was just SOOOOO cool! I'm a NEWBIE and don't even have an HO train set yet but I'm trying to do my research and see if I want to go all in or just put my big toe in! I DID teach with an EXPERT (Check out his Utah Belt setup! WHOA!) but have lost contact with him since I've retired! Wish that you were around here for lessons! Have a great day!
This stuff looks pretty cool, and I've been looking for something like it for a long time. There used to be a similar product (years ago) that instead of foil used a chicken wire mesh between two layers of some sort of paper material that was great for making contours quickly. It was not cheap, but made life easier. This looks like an improvement on that product in that it looks like the surface materials will adhere better to the "top" side of the shaper sheet. I've got a couple areas on my layout where I'm definitely going to try it -- and also on some portable layouts.
Andrew, I have had no end of trouble trying to shape the Shaper Sheet. The mountain that I was trying to form refused to comply. I am now awaiting the Plaster Cloth in hopes that will work. Best, Helen
Thanks for sharing. Can this be used for forming a Sand dune for Wright Brothers' Flyer 1/39 scale Anniversary kit. Diorama for Bi-plane as it's about to take off. Appreciate any recommendations/tips
For creating a sand dune, Shaper Sheet will work well to form the base shape of the dune. You can use Shaper Sheet Plaster to lock the shape of the Shaper Sheet into place. To get the coloration of the sand dune, you can try appling Mold-A-Scene Plaster over the Shaper Sheet Plaster. Be sure to wet the Shaper Sheet Plaster before applying the Mold-A-Scene, or it might absorb all of the moisture and prevent the Mold-A-Scene from curing properly. You can also apply the wet Mold-A-Scene to Shaper Sheet Plaster while it is drying to partially mix them together. We recommend mixing a few small batches to test a few different ways of applying Mold-A-Scene over Shaper Sheet and find what works best for you. Fine Ballast and Fine Talus can also be applied on top of the Shaper Sheet Plaster and Mold-A-Scene to create the sand dune. We hope this helps!
I must say that I had had no success with the Shaper Sheets. The mountain which I was attempting to create is still awaiting creation. And I am awaiting the Plaster Cloths. Hope that works out better. Any advice you can give will be appreciated. Thank you, Helen
wrllovemen Hello! Shaper Sheet will bond with ANY type of plaster material. So, yes, you can use the casting plaster, which I am assuming is Lightweight Hydrocal, which is used for casting rocks. The Lightweight Hydrocal will be just a bit softer than the Shaper Sheet Plaster, but will still create a permanent, hard shell you can then color with pigment and landscape. Shaper Sheet Plaster also has an extended working time, so since the Lightweight Hydrocal will set faster, you will want to mix smaller batches when applying it to the Shaper Sheet, so it will not prematurely set up in your bowl. Hope this helps!
im using shaper sheets to create hollow dome shapes which ill cover with "coal" to simulate "coal" mounds by the coaling tower and comercial coal vendor. will make more for the sand house and slag heaps at the Durillium mines.
No supports are needed with Shaper Sheet™ Plaster, but that would be a choice for the modeler. The more you shape the Shaper Sheet, the stronger it is. You can also apply Shaper Sheet Plaster for more strength and more hardness factor.
A quick and easy method is to use Low Temp Foam Glue (ST1445, ST1446). After Shaper Sheet Plaster (C1182) has been applied to the Shaper Sheet (C1178, C1179), it will be firmly locked in place.
You can form the Shaper Sheet that way. Once Shaper Sheet Plaster is applied to the Shaper Sheet, it becomes quite firm. It will bear the weight of a building. However, if the weight is particularly substantial, we recommend putting a couple foam supports beneath the center of the plateau for extra support.
Hi, I'm busy building a castle and the shapersheet would be ideal as a hilly terrain on which to place the castle. My question is this: Could I use sculptamold (which I have) instead of the Woodland scenics shapersheet plaster (which I don't have)?
Shaper Sheet Plaster was specifically designed to work with Shaper Sheet. We have not tested Sculptamold and cannot give any comment to whether it would work or not. You could test their compatibility on a small section or extra piece before committing to it completely, if that is an available option.
I have a custom mountain covered with plaster cloth. I tried using Shaper Sheet plaster to cover the plaster cloth since it has a longer working time than Hydrocal. However, the color is yellowish whereas Hydrocal is white. So I’m having to use Hydrocal with its limited working time. Did I get a bad batch of Shaper Sheet plaster or is that color normal? Thanks.
Shaper Sheet Plaster is more of a cream color because it is more dense than Lightweight Hydrocal. The cream color will fade a bit once it is completely dry. However, it will not dry to a very bright white like Lightweight Hydrocal. The difference may look drastic right now, but when all the plaster is colored and landscaping materials are added, it will likely be unnoticeable.
@@ModelSceneryExpert Currently I’m trying to find the right color for my mountain top (plaster cloth covered with Hydrocal plaster) and other peaks. They won’t have foliage on them so the color will be “naked”. Can you suggest earth color combinations for a granite color for my peaks? I’ve looked at Grand Tetons and Kenai in Alaska. I’ve tried white at 16:1 combined with a few dabs of slate grey, but it turns out too grey. I’ve also used that with a few dabs of burnt umber to add a bit of brown and red. I like that but it’s still not “right”. Note that I’m happy with a white with dabs of stone grey for my lower elevations (turns out a nice light green). Any suggestions will be appreciated!
It sounds like you are heading in the right direction with your colors. We would suggest that you mix several spray bottles with different pigments from our Earth Colors Liquid Pigments and use them in layers. Spray in layers starting with the lighter colors first and letting them dry some before adding the next layer. Allow the previous layer to show through and even blotting with paper towels or sponge if necessary. The colors we suggest are; Stone Gray, Slate Gray, Concrete, Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber.

Hello! Plaster Cloth can be applied onto Shaper Sheet as well as Shaper Sheet Plaster to create a hard shell surface. Before applying Plaster Cloth, spray Shaper Sheet with water to ensure good adhesion. Yes, you may cut the Shaper Sheet when the material has hardened with a hack saw. What about light weight Hydrocal.. is there a difference between that and shaper sheet plaster? I also was unable to get the sticky side exposed on my shaper sheet. Not sure why it's really stuck on there.
Any of our plaster-based products will work with Shaper Sheet to create a hard shell but deliver varying degrees of hardness. You can view a reference plaster chart on our website for details. We recommend Shaper Sheet Plaster (C1180) because it has an extended working time and hardness factor. The extended time allows you more time to apply the plaster. Typical plaster working time is around 5 minutes, while Shaper Sheet Plaster has approximately 20 minutes. The Shaper Sheet should not be difficult to separate, but, occasionally, there can be stubborn pieces. Try taking something with a hard, flat edge and placing it at the corner on the foil side. Pull it backwards from the corner, putting pressure as you're doing so. This can help get the Shaper Sheet to fold back when it is harder to do so. If this still does not work, contact our Sales and Customer Service at 1-573-346-5555 for further assistance. You can also follow the link woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/ContactUs to send an email.
I am very interested in using this item I have already brought a small roll of shaper sheet in preparation to do the smaller scenery sections on my layout, but I am interested in getting the bigger sized sheet to do the bigger sections. One thing I would like to know is would shaper sheet hold the weight of resin buildings when the plaster has set? Also would you advise using hot glue from a hot glue gun to bond the sheet to layout base board?
When Shaper Sheet is coated with Shaper Sheet Plaster, it creates a hard terrain shell that can bear the weight of resin buildings. You can use hot glue to fix the Shaper Sheet to a wood base, but you will need to sand the shaper foil side of the piece and the layout base so the hot glue will have some tooth to grab onto. You can also use Foam Tack Glue to attach the Shaper Sheet to the layout base. We recommend using Foam Tack Glue if the Shaper Sheet will be attached vertically for a stronger bond. When using Foam Tack Glue, be sure to sand both surfaces (shaper foil and layout base), as well, to encourage adhesion.
+Paul Spray A quick and easy method is to use Low Temp Foam Glue (ST1445, ST1446). The bond between the glue and the foil backing on the Shaper Sheet is not overly durable, but they will adhere together well enough. After Shaper Sheet Plaster (C1182) has been applied to the Shaper Sheet (C1178, C1179), it will be firmly locked in place. We have not tested this method using PVA glue, however, it may work similarly. If the bond between the foil backing and the Low Temp Foam Glue (or PVA glue) is a concern, sand the foil lightly with fine-grade sandpaper to give it some tooth before applying the glue. Keep in mind that it is not a good idea to use PVA glue if you plan on modeling a water area with Realistic Water. PVA glue causes adverse effects to Realistic Water. Thank you for your interest, keep on modeling!
On my layout I have done all of my landscaping but really want to redo it. Will shaper sheet go on to old scenery. And as it's a exabition layout and is always going places will it hold together or any teniches that make it really really hard or dose it do that any way. Thank you
Hello! Shaper Sheet is designed to form your terrain, apply Shaper Sheet Plaster to create the hard shell and then finish with landscape material applied to the dry plaster. You can form Shaper Sheet over existing terrain with landscape, and/or used to expand an existing layout. How you attach the Shaper Sheet depends on your layout. We would love to help you, but I think we need additional information plus maybe a photo or two of your existing layout. If our answer did provide all the information you are looking for, please send a couple of photos to our Sales and Customer Service Department at sales@woodlandscenics.com. They will work with our modelers in our Product Development department to help you in any way we can. Just let them know you are intercity3000 from RUclips requesting further assistance. ***** Hello Brayan...I think I answered you through RUclips, but if not, I apologize...Plaster Cloth is not available at Michaels, but Hobby Lobby carries it, as will most local hobby shops that sell model railroad and gaming supplies. Hope this helps!
We recommend the following for wood surfaces. We do not have any specific information for canvas, but this method should work for that as well depending on the material. A quick and easy method is to use our Low Temp Foam Glue. The bond between the glue and the foil backing on the Shaper Sheet is not overly durable, but they will adhere together well enough. After Shaper Sheet Plaster has been applied tot he Shaper Sheet, it will be firmly locked in place. If the bond between the foil backing and the Low Temp Foam Glue is a concern, sand the foil lightly with fine-grade sandpaper to give it some tooth before applying the glue.
I live in the UK and I make dioramas, the only problem is I can't buy Shaper Sheet online from Woodland Scenics because the currency is in Dollars. Is there another alternative from Woodland Scenics as there is a store which sells your products (but not many!)
Hello Joshua, Check out our Store Locator. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/DealerSearch?WS=&country=GB&go= You can find a store in the UK that carries our products, and most likely will be carrying Shaper Sheet. New Terrain products are now on their way being shipped to our UK distributor, Bachmann Europe. You can also contact them to find out which stores will be carrying Shaper Sheet. www.bachmann.co.uk/ Hope this helps!
You can use a glue gun or Foam Tack Glue to attach Shaper Sheet to cork. As the Shaper Sheet foil is very smooth, it needs a little tooth to encourage adhesion. Use 80 or 150-grit sandpaper to roughen the shaper foil before applying the glue. If using Foam Tack Glue, we recommend using the contact adhesion method for the best results. Apply Foam Tack Glue to both the cork and the roughened shaper foil. Let dry until clear and tacky (maximum working time is 1 hour) then press the shaper foil to the cork. The glue will bond instantly.
We do not model directly on foam. Once the Sub-Terrain is built using our foam products, we cover our complete layout with Shaper Sheet and Shaper Sheet Plaster or use Plaster Cloth. The choice between Plaster Cloth and Shaper Sheet with Shaper Sheet Plaster is entirely up to the modeler.

Oscar Wang The Scenic Sprayer is a product in and of itself (S192) The spray head fits the Scenic Cement bottle. For this application, Kim filled the sprayer with water. The water wets the Shaper Sheet fiber, helping the wet Plaster form the mechanical bond needed to make the hard shell. Hope this helps!
***** Thank you so much for your response! I have purchased many of your products just yesterday and I have one last question. The second time Kim used the scenic spray was after she applied to turf to the Shaper Sheet. Did it still contain water? And what would scenic cement do if we used it instead of water? Thanks! :)
Ah Yes...now I see the confusion...so sorry about that...seems we didn't even consider that the Scenic Sprayer doing double duty would confuse viewers! Our apologies! Kim sprayed with water on the Shaper Sheet. The sprayer contained Scenic Cement when she was applying landscape materials! Hope this clears it up and Happy Modeling! If you are inclined to share...we'd love to see some photos of your project. You can send them to marketing@woodlandscenics.com or post them to our Facebook page! Thanks!
Yes, you can apply Plaster Cloth over Shaper Sheet. Before applying Plaster Cloth to Shaper Sheet, spray down the Shaper Sheet with water to ensure good adhesion. Dip a strip of Plaster Cloth in cold water and apply to the surface bumpy side up. With wet fingers, smooth and spread the plaster bumps until holes the in the Plaster Cloth are filled in. You will want to work efficiently, because plaster sets quickly. Hope this helps! Happy Modeling!
Hi Amit: Shaper Sheet is a pliable sheet that can be shaped and reshaped to create any level of detail and hold its form. This material is formulated to mechanically bond with the plaster to create a thin, hard shell ready for landscaping. If you feel this is not durable enough, you can put a coat of Shaper Sheet Plaster for more durability.

Hello! Yes, it is possible! There are two ways to add rocks to Shaper Sheet. The first option is the Plaster Cloth method. Test fit the rock castings on your layout. You may need to cut into the Plaster Cloth terrain with a hobby knife in order for rocks to fit nicely. Soak rock in water for 10 seconds and wet the area where the rock will be placed. Wad a strip of wet Plaster Cloth and place on the backside of the rock, then press in place. Hold until setting begins. Apply wet Plaster Cloth strips around edges of rock to hide gaps. Poke and smooth wet with your fintertips. The other method you can use is to attach the rock to the Shaper Sheet with an extra amount of Shaper Sheet Plaster. The rock needs to be wet. Soak the rock in water for at least one minute, and brush on Shaper Sheet Plaster to the area on the Shaper Sheet where you want the rock. Press the rock into place and adjust as desired. It is best to plan where Rocks will go ahead of time. (If you don't plan ahead, you may have to make cuts in the Shaper Sheet or add extra plaster and that will take longer.)I hope that helps! Happy modeling!

@4:30 you say you can join shaper-sheets. This doesn't appear to the case. My shaper sheets do not have any adhesive. Just the gauze and aluminum foil, the mesh film is permanently stuck to the aluminum foil.... this demonstration seems a bit dodgy here if you ask me.
Some Shaper Sheet is harder than others to peel apart, but the gauze and aluminum foil is not permanently adhered. Try turning the Shaper Sheet upside down with the aluminum side up. Use a flat, firm object and put pressure at one of the corner edges. Slowly rub the object across the aluminum, back toward you. It should start to slowly crumple the aluminum up and peel the it away from the gauze. If you still have issues, contact Customer Service directly at 1 573-346-5555 .

You guys ever try ornamental flower foam to build the terrain ? I do this to copy geologic terrain that people are familiar with and then cover with plaster . This adds additional hardness and keeps kids fingers from pushing the material. Similar to how they always like to poke holes in meat wrapped with plastic at the supermarket.
You can use our Store Locator to find a hobby store near you that carries our products. No guarantees that it's there, but you can call and ask. You can also order from us online, but you will have shipping costs. We recommend local hobby stores to avoid these fees. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/dealersearch

Woodland Scenics so nice
We are delighted to help! Thanks!
wow thanks for the response your so nice! i will send pictures using my email which is jackjmcinnes@hotmail.co.uk cheers
***** Great...we'll be looking for you email. :-)
I'm curious what armatures are being used for the tall trees on the right at 3:45? I'm having trouble identifying them in your product catalog. :)
Hi...The two trees on the right are Basswood (TR1618) from our line of Premium Trees. Hope this helps!
*****
Thanks. They are quality looking. :)
***** I'm not sure, but you might. You can always order it online. :)
***** Hello Brayan...I think I answered you through RUclips, but if not, I apologize...Plaster Cloth is not available at Michaels, but Hobby Lobby carries it, as will most local hobby shops that sell model railroad and gaming supplies. Hope this helps!
How do you adhere the shaper sheet to another surface such as wood or canvas? Hot glue or super glue?
Love these videos!
If the bond between the foil backing and the Low Temp Foam Glue is a concern, sand the foil lightly with fine-grade sandpaper to give it some tooth before applying the glue.
i think im gonna buy it now! :)
I live in the UK and I make dioramas, the only problem is I can't buy Shaper Sheet online from Woodland Scenics because the currency is in Dollars. Is there another alternative from Woodland Scenics as there is a store which sells your products (but not many!)
Hello Joshua, Check out our Store Locator. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/DealerSearch?WS=&country=GB&go=
You can find a store in the UK that carries our products, and most likely will be carrying Shaper Sheet. New Terrain products are now on their way being shipped to our UK distributor, Bachmann Europe. You can also contact them to find out which stores will be carrying Shaper Sheet. www.bachmann.co.uk/
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the video. What was the color pigment you used on 3:23?

Hello. what glue do I use to glue the shapa sheet to a cork base please? doI use a glue gun or your white white foam glue please?
You can use a glue gun or Foam Tack Glue to attach Shaper Sheet to cork. As the Shaper Sheet foil is very smooth, it needs a little tooth to encourage adhesion. Use 80 or 150-grit sandpaper to roughen the shaper foil before applying the glue.
If using Foam Tack Glue, we recommend using the contact adhesion method for the best results. Apply Foam Tack Glue to both the cork and the roughened shaper foil. Let dry until clear and tacky (maximum working time is 1 hour) then press the shaper foil to the cork. The glue will bond instantly.
take a drink everytime she says shaper sheet lol
I use foam that i cut in Nice montains with rocks what shouls i use sheets or just the liquid stuff?
We do not model directly on foam. Once the Sub-Terrain is built using our foam products, we cover our complete layout with Shaper Sheet and Shaper Sheet Plaster or use Plaster Cloth. The choice between Plaster Cloth and Shaper Sheet with Shaper Sheet Plaster is entirely up to the modeler.
What type of turf did you use in the mountain? Is it rough turf?
Oscar Wang Hello Oscar, The first layer of turf is Blended Fine Turf. We don't show all of the steps to how Kim landscaped the mountainside, because the video focus was how to work with Shaper Sheet. If you are interested in seeing the complete process, you can watch the following video. Thanks for your interest!

***** The scenic sprayer has water in it or scenic cement? I heard Kim say it was filled with water? How would that help? Thanks!
Thanks!
Would plaster cloth work for the covering? I'm not well with plaster.
Happy Modeling!
how durable it is?
BTW :) Nice Tutorial, thanks
Hi Amit: Shaper Sheet is a pliable sheet that can be shaped and reshaped to create any level of detail and hold its form. This material is formulated to mechanically bond with the plaster to create a thin, hard shell ready for landscaping. If you feel this
is not durable enough, you can put a coat of Shaper Sheet Plaster for more durability.
What color paints were you using on your mountains

Is it possible to ad rocks to shaper sheet?
Thanks for replying! I will definitely try the plaster cloth method.
I cant shape the shaper sheet like it

Can you guys please make a artic video

If you still have issues, contact Customer Service directly at 1 573-346-5555 .
what is that glue product
Before adding the Shaper Sheet it was misted with water on the Scenic Sprayer. Scenic Cement was used to attach landscaping (trees & shrubs).
Madam where can I get this product...
You can purchase our products on our website or at a local hobby store. The link below will take you directly to the Store Locator on our website where you can search for the closest hobby store to you.

I did thanks...
I gotta find this stuff
You can use our Store Locator to find a hobby store near you that carries our products. No guarantees that it's there, but you can call and ask. You can also order from us online, but you will have shipping costs. We recommend local hobby stores to avoid these fees. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/dealersearch
These are good tutorials but is the music really necessary? I found it annoying.
Is there any substitute of shaper sheet?
You can also use paper wads and cover them with Plaster Cloth. You can see how it's done in our Plaster Cloth video (link below). woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/video/PlasterCloth
shape your shaper sheet
Good video, at least it would be without that way too loud 'background' music.
Idk why in videos when people are giving verbal instructions that they put any music during talking. Lot do it unfortunately. Distracting. I like the video a lot aside from that.
Let me hear you say "Shaper Sheet" 3 times fast.
Damn lol ;0)
What's the name of the powder added on to the landscape. The name of the green powder which gave a green field effect
