I think I will give this one a try. I used Vallejo Still Water before and it was a nightmare, like you said. I got cracks around the reeds of my pond. Regarding water falls I would use some clear plastic from blister packages. What came to my mind though was using this square as a nice window :-)
hey mate, if you paint the bed of that lake dark blue/green on the deep part and light blue/yellow on the shallow part, it'll make a hell of a lot better!
Thanks for your video! We are doing a Future City for competition at school. We wanted to see how to make "pretty water." If we win, it will be due in part to you! Thanks!
With the fact that this never sticks to blue-tac and the like, have you ever tried to use it to cast smaller terrain bits for larger builds? What I mean by that is, I imagine you could take some bark or something and sort of impress it into a layer of blue tac, then gently pour in a thin layer of water effects just to get the texture, then use those pieces on larger foam builds to create rocky textures vs casting rocks with plaster, and then paint over them.
Off all my years in the hobby, i have never used water effect products. After watching this video that`s about to change, i think the main reason i never used it was it scared the crap out of me. You make a mistake and it`s the difference between a nice piece and an awful one, now thanks to Mel and his video i`ll give it ago.
This stuff looks like Liquitex Pouring medium for painters, pouring medium is an acrylic medium. I bought a bottle of 946ml (33oz) for $32.00. but this price was at a local store in a small town, so probably a high price, you could check out Hobby Lobby or Michael's and use a coupon. Just thought i would share, in case this price is cheaper, but not sure! It also dries extremely clear, and is flexible as well(depending on its thickness).
+chanspirit1 I guessed the same thing since learning more about paints, never thought you'd actually be able to buy it though. thanks for the heads up bud!
Never watched this video and it was only natural that after i bought it only then did i think to search out a review lol. What was i thinking great video even if it is an old one
I really love the WS water, and i dont mind the ripple effect, i think it makes it look more natural, great overview :D i just got a new stuff today called solid water so i am going to give that a test over the next few days :D
no problem mate, i got the med pot sized one, which was about £12, its got some other cool stuff i on the web site, i got a rusting kit that actually makes real rust one any surface. www.deluxematerials.co.uk/pages/scenicproducts.htm
Superb video review of this stuff and it's use From soup to nuts, you covered it all and made it funny as well I died when I saw the cost of it in the hobby shop, but will splurge and get it on your recommendation Fantastic job mate!
Glad you took that in good spirit, thought afterwards that my comment might have come over the wrong way. Really nice watcha call it... tutorials, by the way. Yeah ;-)
Hey Mel, for applying this on a riverbed with rocks and gravel etc at the bottom of it, is the application the same or is there anything that needs to be done differently?
Hello, at the beginning of the video, you showed a little puddle of the stuff on a black board and peeled it off. What is the material you poured it onto that allowed you to remove so cleanly and not pick up color?
Is there already a blue tint to the realistic water? Or could I put red acrylic paint underneath it and it would still be red.. Also can I put the realistic water on cardboard.. or is it a certain type of material.. if so which ones (sorry for all the questions ^.^)
hey TT, have watched many vids, and learned much from you, especially the one about aerosol-spraying xps foam. am working on a diorama using foam for the 1st time, and had no problem w/the paint, since i knew what to do! so a question: i now want to add debris to my streets, and pour woodland's realistic water, making a murky funky mess. should i glue the debris onto cured water, or glue onto foam (w/elmer's) then pour. my concern is the water may not be able to self-level if there's lots of debris. thanks for everything..
Thing is, real open water doesn't look all that realistic from high up, since we perceive larger-scale features which have lower proper frequencies than we are used to from up close.
TheTerrainTutor I was on about the basic relationship between wavelength and frequency: longer waves are slower, and from high up you see much longer waves than usual and therefore the water's surface seems oddly gel-like or semi-frozen --- you do not get the glossy shimmering effect that this product seems to go for. That said, for the purposes of model-building, it is probably more to the point whether it _looks_ convincing, rather than representing the physics accurately.
How long does it take for realistic water to dry,I used some according to the instructions 48 hours ago and part of it is the same colour as poured,in other words a light grey.
I didn't quite understand the part in which you say Woodland Scenics Realistic Water does not work well with PVA. What could happen if you use it and it touches PVA? What other glue do you suggest using then? Thank you and sorry to bother you but my english isnt perfect and sometimes I dont quite get what you are saying! My fault of course!
Does woodland scenics water effect hold up well with rigorous wargaming? I'm afraid a movement tray corner might get down into the river and damage it.
Hi, loved this, how did you make the base for the pond, i'm very very new to this, but I would like to make a frozen pond, how would you do this please , we are trying to make a Christmas village,Lemax models
Thanks for the reply. The water was poured to a depth of approx 1/8 of an inch as stated on the bottle. The width of the layout is 16 inches and the canal runs in that direction.I have a road and rail bridge and I have poured the water in between,in other words three pours and I have notice this morning that the front is fine and the middle is slowly changing, but the rear is still grey..Is this normal ?.The layout is in a bedroom with no heating, other than what rises from the ground floor. Is any of this information helpful. Thanks. Graham Tandy.
+TheTerrainTutor thanks for your reply, strangely enough it seems to have now hardened, but it has taken almost two weeks. Thanks for your help Graham Tandy.
How tolerant is RW to water? I've heard it hates PVA with a passion and turns cloudy (apparently due to moisture) but you used water to apply the filler. So in certain cases such as with acrylics thinned with water (I'd guess it hates the proper alcohols) for basing with an airbrush or the likes of wetter clays, if they are left to dry completely then RW should not be impacted? Alternatively would sealing with Matt varnish before RW application just solve most of those problems?
It's fine with water, it just takes longer to cure and crackles more if the coat is too thin. The only issue with pva is blobs such as gluing tufts/reeds, so I use super/hot glue for those. A thin sealing coat of pva isn't an issue but matt varnish works well. I often don't bother an just paint then pour bud
TheTerrainTutor wicked, been hearing lots of conflicting information, so much so it's difficult to separate the old wives tales. The sort of scenery I'll be using won't have any vegetation in as in this case it's to represent a man made chasm which has recently been flooded so it was mainly the interaction with moisture if any parts hadn't dried I was concerned about. Cheers mate :)
Hello! Thanks for all your cracking vids, inspiring stuff. I just got a bottle of this for a dockside board. I paint my terrain with stuff I find in the b&q bargain/discount bin. I have a pot of valspar house paint that is the perfect colour for my muddy river. Is this going to work? The bottle says to use only their acrylic paint but that sounds silly to me. Ben
messing around with it. Got a messy finger in the end but the prize isnt so bad. making seawaves or fast moving water with these stuff is easy because it's not in a liquid form, it stays in the shape you put it. but making slow moving waters is quite challenging. These stuff is also cheap and easy to find. I got it just about 2 bucks in pretty much any store. Might you wanna try a vid of these and inform others? Thnx (hint, it sucks for slow waters but finally it looks like mud)
I wouldn't suggest it, it won't be sticky enough initially, so they'll fall over, by the time it is sticky enough, adding them could ruin the effect. Glue the reeds down with a dab of water effects first and once they've set, pour in the rest mate.
I have a diorama made out of styrofoam that has been painted then varnished. I want to use this or EZ-water to pour over almost the whole diorama, can I ?
wouldnt it be better pouring it out of a squirty bottle? Like maybe a fairy liquid bottle? So you're not risking it spilling down as he almost did on here.
This is somthing that confuses me. terrain in gaming always goes for realistic representation. So why have tabletops screwed up water so badly ? I'm an airline pilot and flying all over Europe over the last 18 years. Not once NEVER have I seen a blue river or lake. Seas yes they are blue but the rest are a dark shade of green or black. they are too small or shallow to reflect the sky. we are great at cliffs and houses trees and bridges but no were have I seen a correct lake?
Nice review. Oh No!!! There is a liquid and a scalpel used and no warnings about fumes and fingers!!! What will the Elf'n'Safety Nazis say?! Great tutorial and overview.
I actually liked the ripple effect ! :D it kind of looked like a little fishing pond with wind blowing across the top :)
***** If I could control the ripples, I'd be with you matey
I think I will give this one a try. I used Vallejo Still Water before and it was a nightmare, like you said. I got cracks around the reeds of my pond.
Regarding water falls I would use some clear plastic from blister packages. What came to my mind though was using this square as a nice window :-)
You gotta love blister packages, so many uses :o)WS is far superior to Vallejo, far less shrinkage mate.
hey mate, if you paint the bed of that lake dark blue/green on the deep part and light blue/yellow on the shallow part, it'll make a hell of a lot better!
Yea its looking like you'll step right into deep water from the bank😊
It pained me to watch you rip it up, such a lovely pond.
Had to be done and I thought I might as well make it useful, I'm brutal to terrain like that, terrain fears me! ;oD
Thanks for the great info. This was really helpful. Keep the good work coming!
Thanks for your video! We are doing a Future City for competition at school. We wanted to see how to make "pretty water." If we win, it will be due in part to you! Thanks!
+Anita Geinert Excellent, hope you win!
Good video, this water effects isn't as tough as I thought and the ripples gives it a more realistic look as is water is not usually very still.
+Max Brandt That's the acrylic base for you mate
With the fact that this never sticks to blue-tac and the like, have you ever tried to use it to cast smaller terrain bits for larger builds?

I probably wouldn't use this for casting but it could be possible mater

Thanks so much for the review. Really helpful. Your tip about making waterfalls? It struck me you could also use it for making curved windows.
Really helpful video. Thanks mate.
SwordOfJustice2007 glad it helped matey ;-)
Very handy product review, thanks!
No worries mate, glad you found it useful
Great demo and advice.
Nuff said!
Thanks mate.Nuff said! :o)
Very nice product overview!! Would you make a tutorial on how to build a river section.

+Alejandro Tabilo It's on the list mate
Great overview mate! keep them coming :)

oh don't worry mate, you're not the first to mention them lol
That is actually better to take off than the scenorama version😰
Whatchamacallit!?
Hey Mel, for applying this on a riverbed with rocks and gravel etc at the bottom of it, is the application the same or is there anything that needs to be done differently?
+Bibbly Exactly the same but seal the riverbed with a matt varnish first to be sure you don't get floaters mate ;-)
good vid mel. very usefull
Hello, at the beginning of the video, you showed a little puddle of the stuff on a black board and peeled it off. What is the material you poured it onto that allowed you to remove so cleanly and not pick up color?
I think it's foamboard.

It is good and nice
Rajesh Kumar gupta Thanks
Could you base a miniature with this stuff. And dose it really hold its shape when it's done curing.
+Graham Johnson no, it's more like vinyl mate
Hi, I know that Woodland Scenics use Oz measurements but how many Oz is the bottle in the video? Thanks in advance.
+Paul lebbon I think it's an 8oz bottle mate
Stupid ads. Anyone else remember when RUclips was free and promised they would never have ads?
What glues can i use to create the "outer edge" to stop the scenic water flowing off a minature base?
Use parcel tape mate
I've heard of wargaming but what is it? Plus, who needs war gaming when you have model railroading.
Thing is, real open water doesn't look all that realistic from high up, since we perceive larger-scale features which have lower proper frequencies than we are used to from up close.

Thanks for your help

defo a dodgy bottle mate :-)
Ive read it takes MONTHS to dry and causes alot of cracks and problems..
does this stuff stink or have a toxic odor? im modeling in my bedroom, so I cannot have a product with odor
+5dmc1 It's acrylic, so no more than your model paints mate, it won't be an issue.
+TheTerrainTutor does it work on cardboard ?

can i use mod podge and or tacky glue with this stuff?
think I've already answered you on another comment mate
when you whachacallit you have to whachacallit because the wachamacallit is... whachacallit.
+The Amazing Hatguy Exactly! ;-D
Yeah,
Ben
is mod podge and super tacky glue ok to use
mod podge yes, stippled on in layers, super tacky glue no! big NO! ;-)
ok thanks :) sorry if i already asked a simular question before :\ i've got a poor memory so i tend to repeat my self a lot
can you add inks to it and how about making waves in it ?
Yes, use heavy gel for waves mate
I got some acetic silicon sealant, can I use that? (maybe paint it a little bit dark green and brown for slow moving waters)
Give it a test
Whelp, trying all sorts is kinda the deal, right? (Hint: silicon is hard for making slow moving water, it's too sticky
Wonder how you thin it down?

should be fine mate but you can alway do a small test piece first
I will do that. thank you for responding.
wouldnt it be better pouring it out of a squirty bottle? Like maybe a fairy liquid bottle? So you're not risking it spilling down as he almost did on here.
***** It probably wouldn't make much difference to be honest mate
Fair shout.
do you know if you can use paint (acrylic for example) to dye to make it look a bit even more realistic ?
Myc Sculptures acrylics will change its opacity as they're pigments suspended in a solution, to dye it, I'd suggest using inks mate
Even if u want a Swamp dirty water look?
Myc Sculptures
then I'd use acrylics for standing water and inks for running mate
Awesome. . Thanks a lot :)
one more question can i add some color to the realistic water itself. if so what should i use?
Acrylic inks for translucent, model paints for murky bud, stick with acrylic!
ok like LIQUITEX ACRYLIC INKS TRANSPARENT colors
yep, that'll do mate
Can you mix acrylic paints with this ?
And would it be suitable to simulate spilled drinks etc.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, acrylics are fine with it. On the drinks, you'd probably be better with gloss varnish but it should be doable with a bit of practice mate
TheTerrainTutor Cheers mate.
What did you use that like paper color blue?
+Ilike Julia it was just blue acrylic craft paint mate
How can you compare this to vallejo still water or r they the same?
Charles Lowther Very similar products but I prefer WS over Vallejo mate
Can you please tell me, does it stick to glass?
can you use that in making figures like submerged deep in the water
I'd use a resin for deep pours mate
cool product im thinging about making a scenery for my warhammers where can u buy this product??????????
Clever Forever Most hobby shops and online store stock it mate, failing that, try ebay ;-)
thank you :-)
Will this hold up outdoors in sunlight and rain?
sandy STP No mate, none of the acrylic based water effects will. You want this stuff or a similar resin ... ruclips.net/video/WUzVbqQHvVY/видео.html
What are your bases made of???
Would this be any good for warhammer bases?
yep, same stuff as GW used to sell mate
Can I use GW paints with it?
yes but keep away from the technical range though!
I got a lot of surface bubbles. Why and how to avoid this?
Stir it, don't shake it at the start
@@TheTerrainTutor I never shook it.
Must be down to how you're pouring it mate
so anyone got any adivce for how to paint the base of the lake ?
I normally go for a dark green with a touch of blue and grey mate
"more liquidy, more viscous, more thinner..."???
viscous means it is thicker or syrup-like.
Where to purchase?
Most railway hobby shops
yeah..yeah.
Ya
How did can it be while still setting?
mixutre of water and plastic, goes clear as the water evaporates
Do you have to multi-layer if you want it deeper, or will it set ok with an inch deep?
This is somthing that confuses me. terrain in gaming always goes for realistic representation. So why have tabletops screwed up water so badly ? I'm an airline pilot and flying all over Europe over the last 18 years. Not once NEVER have I seen a blue river or lake. +MrBizteck It's more a case of going with the crowd because that's what's expected mate. I typically do mine green now, checkout the envirotex vid :-)
will do ! sorry in no way do I want to take away from your skills ( i'm just jealous) But when I was at salute it just really bugged me !
Yes, the color bothers me, too. I do very small (1/48 scale) ponds and streams, and mine all have muddy bottoms, embedded rocks and sand.
Such a great product.? Why tear it out? Duh!
Testin' and reusing ;-)
I find it very expensive
#whatchamacallit

Guys the e-z water is better lot more realistic
+Lea Lea I've never played with the EZ stuff, would you recommend it?
TheTerrainTutor yea! It comes out a lot nicer and it reflects and shines in the light and it's hella cheap.
Lea Lea
I'll have to check them out mate
stop saying whatchacallit! it's so irratating! other than that love your videos, keep it up mate.
Your application shows an expensive way to duplicate glossy acrylic paint.
I really like your tutorials and reviews, BUT you have to stop destroying your ponds!
Cheers mate, don't worry, I'm done with destroying ponds, I'm destroying building next ;oD
Hehe, I'm looking forward to it. :)
Great stuff! I'm a new - ish sub and love your videos but please can you stop saying yeah every other sentence, it's driving me crackers! 😅🙏
