    I think it’s also a good idea to have the end of the gate to rest on a small “ramp” when closed. This way the weight of the gate isn’t constantly pulling the post over. It helps when kids climb on the gate as well

    The opposing J bolts are a great anti-theft measure against anyone that doesn’t own wrench. Tack weld that shit so they can’t just unscrew it; if you want to remove it later - you just cut off the 15c bolt and replace it.

    Also, at least with my farm gate, there is play between the j bolt hinge point and the sleeve on the gate that sits on it. If both j bolts face up, not only can someone lift the gate off the hinges, but the gate will most likely sag to the ground on the far side!
    Thanks for the tips!

    To facilitate easier insertion of the j-bolt, coat the treads with liquid dishwashing soap(dawn, whatever). This is especially useful if manually screwing in the j-bolt!

    Y'all make it look so easy . Nice job , Do you have any tips to make it hard for POS from stealing your gate beside chain & lock . I have some property out in rural area of the panhandle of Florida . The crack head thieves in the area ride to dirt roads looking for a quick buck . Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

    • @SWiFence

      I guess anyone will steal anything now days. You could use weld-on hinges or weld on your existing hinges.

  • @bradmetcalf7832
    @bradmetcalf7832 27 дней назад

    While opposing J Bolts are a theft deterrent, the main reason for them is so live stock can't get a nose or horn in the gate and lift it off the hinges!

    Do you ever prefer the heavier duty bolts that use the nuts and washer for heavier gates?

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  2 года назад +1

      I like both bolts but, from what i have noticed is that with the bolt style sometimes the nut on the back side of the post can come loose causigng your bolt to twist, also if you use the bolt style drill the same size hole as the bolt dont go a little bigger.

    The hinges are adjustable so you just need to figure out the lowest point and you can adjust the gate to match

    Great video! Would it be adequate to mount a similar farm gate (3000mm by 1180mm) directly on the side of the house (brick wall), in terms of weight/drag? I guess I'd use the flat surface mounts directly - but am worried there is no way to adjust the level with those...

    Can those J-bolts be buried to the hilt if needed to create more clearance on the latch side? Or will they split a 6" round post if sunk too far?

    I was wondering about a tool, now I have the plan. I will make one. Weld a piece of pipe to an old socket and use the impact. I was thinking of using a length of pipe as tool to adjust the J-bolt. How do you make sure your drill is level before you drill the hole?

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  6 месяцев назад

      I just sight it in level by looking across the top of the drill. Maybe not the most scientific but it works for me.

  • @gbennett58
    @gbennett58 4 месяца назад

    This is great. My problem is the hinge post always leans over due to the torque from the gate. I've tried everything to keep this from happening from setting the post in concrete to putting on braces. I even installed another nearby post to attach the hinge post to with turnbuckles. So what's the fix?

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  4 месяца назад

      Gotta go deep enough and heavy enough. That's gonna vary based on your ground and where you are on the globe. But if it's leaning it's because you're not deep enough.
