How to Hang a Gate

  • A new puppy and a busy Seattle street meant installing a driveway gate was a necessary project. From setting the posts in concrete to sharing a few tips on hanging a tube gate, I had a blast building this gate with my friend Stu and Rigby Puppy is now safe and sound. I finally found a use for some LED lights I'd purchased a ways back, did some re-landscaping, and the whole driveway looks to have gotten a massive makeover. These Behlen Country farm tube gates are fairly easy to hang, but it's important you brace and set your posts properly to avoid sagging over time.

    Just a suggestion from someone who has built many fences using hog panels (utility panels..... whatever you call them in your neck of the woods) consider using a bolt cutter to cut the panels to size instead of a peanut grinder, quicker and quieter. Nice work, your place looks amazing!

    A little tack weld on the nut will make it really hard to remove it from the bolt.
    Carriage bolts and nuts aren’t too pricey to replace when you need to cut it off to take the gate off.

      Nah, everyone needs to make measurement decisions based on their own needs. This project had arbitrary measurements based on the materials we had available. Aside from the concrete, everything we used was recycled, so what was helpful for me wouldn’t be helpful for the next person.

    Looks great! The AG supply store gate doesn't look that bad. Looks true "farmy" since most farmers wouldn't commit time or effort to a custom fabrication anyway.
    My .02¢ - when you fabricate your new metal gate, consider also making (or just buying) some timber gusset plates for the hinged-end posts and crossbraces. Even with Timberloks the joints can open because of how much weight is cantilevered out as the wood dries.

    You might want to use some high tensile wire using a stretcher to do what that diagonal brace will never actually be able to do. Look up "H Bracing" for a more complete explanation. If you don't, that fence post will sag giving in to the weight of the steel gate.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  2 года назад

      Did you watch the whole video? Because the gate is literally attached to an H brace…

    • @Raul28153
      @Raul28153 2 года назад

      @@AnneofAllTrades Yah and because you mentioned it, I watched it again. but that's an H brace in name only. If you were welding steel pipe you'd be golden but that diagonal that is screwed in place just won't cut it - - over time.
      The welded wire mesh you stapled to everything will offer some support, but only from one side, so I'm guessing the diagonal will begin to fail from the outside first. Give it a year or two.
      You could improve it while staying with just the wood diagonal, by drilling a hole through the post and diagonal allowing you to install some steel all thread nuts and washers at both ends.
      Here is the thing. That wood diagonal needs to be applying a lot of tension to the two posts on either side pulling them together. The H member should be under serious compression. That's how H braced fence posts work. Your diagonal can't apply that compressive force.
      Here's a video from the NC Ag Extension that explains it all really well
      ruclips.net/video/rYw247pseKg/видео.html
      Another way to save it might be to put a wheel on the far end of the gate itself. A wheel would take the load of the hinges and post. There are wheels sold for exactly that and you do have a heavy gate there. If the surface is uneven get one with a spring.
