  • We are finishing the pasture Fencing Project today. We are installing a farm gate with a 2 way latch. Then we will install a stock panel over a culvert, and the pasture should all be fenced in. Then we can let the animals out to their new area. Plus we get some drone footage of the finished pasture.

It all looks great. I bet the goats got to the other side of the fence and were disappointed because they were so sure that the grass on the other side of the fence was so much better.

  • @w056007568

Fencing looks absolutely excellent - it should be fine for many years to come.
Before you commit yourselves to purchasing a water trough consider carefully where you want to position it so that it can perhaps supply water for two paddocks at once by placing it in a fence line. You will also find that animals will stand around it or be walking to it frequently that they will create a muddy area around it which then holds rainfall which creates even more mud!
A circular trough (or even a semi circular access point) allows more animals to drink at once. An important issue to also consider will perhaps be, in the future what animals will want to drink from it (think goats, sheep, cattle, horses and possibly poultry!)
It ideally needs to be able to be drained by removing a bung and I suggest you look at a bottom fill design with a float operated valve. If you intend grazing animals in really cold weather then smashing the ice at least once is a daily chore.
For these reasons I highly recommend an earth-mover tyre type part buried on a mound of soil and with a small size rock cover over the soil, don't forget an easy access gate valve to cut off the water supply. There are good plastic troughs but avoid galvanised troughs as they corrode too quickly.
All farm livestock waste free access hay badly as you already know! So choose a design that has a trough arrangement underneath the rack that makes them work for it and preferably has some sort of simple roof to keep it dry in wet weather. Just like the water trough livestock will tend to churn up the soil around it and make a mess and destroy the pasture.
For the few animals you are talking about personally I simply would not bother with a rack but take a couple of slices per beast per day and put it down in fresh location each day. That way you can easily adjust how much you give them each day according to how well they clear up the hay fed the previous day and of course avoid pasture damage. If you feel that you must use a feeder the pick the driest soil site along the fence line alongside the drive from the house to the barn - it could be filled over the fence and is likely to drain most easily from rainfall.

Hi, that barn with the corrugated metal on the sides I would get some aluminum paint or what ever colour you wish and give that metal a coat of paint, It will add so much to that old barn. I found that the gate pins you used don't last very long. For me, i use the threaded pins with nuts and washers for the top and bottom hinges. Over time the gate posts will waller out and you'll have to replace them. Over all you have a stout fence that should last for years to come.
