Titan AE came out when I was in high school and I loved it. That film along with Anastasia, Tarzan, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin, and Pocahontas had a HUGE influence on how I draw people and were the reason why I originally wanted to be an animator. I ultimately ended up being an illustrator since Disney shut down their traditional animation studios my freshman year of art school, but 15+ years later in the industry and I haven't regretted a single second of it (I'm 38 now).
The funny thing is that people STILL recognize that influence in my work, especially from Anastasia. Every so often I'll still get a comment here and there that says my work reminds them of Anastasia, and I tell them they have a very good eye. One of my friends says it shows the most in how I draw cheeks in profile.
Titan AE had a FANTASTIC soundtrack, too. I still listen to it from time to time, especially "It's My Turn to Fly" and "Cosmic Castaway". Those still slap.
This is such an underrated Sci Fi Action Adventure film from Don Bluth, and it was also the last animated film from Fox Animation Studios the company went bankrupt in 2001.
Another one of my childhood favorites. I don't know if it gets hate, or if it was just ahead of its time/marketed incorrectly. This was way before adult animation was commonplace.
I enjoyed it, however I remember the marketing hyping it up like it was the next Star Wars, I'm sure they even said that.
One of my favorites as a Pre-Teen , have it on DVD
First watched in my early 20s when it came out and still love the film. Separate from the film was it's DTS soundmix on the DVD release and THX optimizer special feature. It was a must have disc for home theater enthusiasts. The soundmix still holds up and still one of the best to show off a system.

When I was in my 40's, and having a horrible day, my daughter would pop this in the VCR. You need this tonight MOM!!
Bought the CD soundtrack for this for an exclusive song from The Urge - “It’s My Turn To Fly”.
Still a treasure for me.
I remember the "Over My Head" song being played on MTV.
That song & "Cosmic Castaway" still find their ways onto a lot of my playlists!
The type of animation you're talking about where they use actual footage of someone moving an then animate over it is called rotoscoping and was first used by Flesher studios in 1915. It was used to speed up production and to get smoother more natural movement.

I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. What a blast from the past.
I really like this movie, it's one of the first I bought on DVD in college, and I remember going out to buy the soundtrack the day after I saw it. It is interesting that we got a run of animated sci-fi films around 2000 (Iron Giant was '99, this was '00, Atlantis was '01, and Treasure Planet was '02), and they (mostly) all flopped. Re-watching them today makes it hard to see why, because they're all actually pretty great. I guess they were just ahead of their time. Hope you guys do give Treasure Planet a re-watch, as well as Atlantis!

I believe the Dredge were afraid of humanity's potential to shape the galaxy to their liking. They only attacked when they learned of the Titan project which is a clear example of both human ingenuity and ambition. They saw a potential threat in this young race and wanted to wipe them out before they became a real problem.
Also yes, movies do feel longer when you're a kid. Everything does, because you've experienced less time. When you're 6 years old 3 years is half your entire lifetime, but when you're 30 it's only 1/10.
Once humans could engineer liveable planets at will they would spread all over and be impossible to stop easily.
I always joked about a sequel set a few generations later. Rebuilt population and a fleet going out for payback against all the species that didn't help humanity or treated them like shit while humans were nomads. Except for the bat people, the realest allies humans could have, took till I was older to realize the one fully sacrificed itself to save the girl.
I have "Cosmic Castaway", "It's My Turn to Fly", "Over My Head", and "Not Quite Paradise" on my playlists to this day. ^_^

I watched this in theaters in 2000, when I was about 15 years old. Remember liking it a lot, but I don't remember anything about it.
I loved this movie when it came out! I also recall this being one of the first movies I used to "showcase" my brand new DVD player (lol) when it was released on home video. Traditional animation has a certain "feel" that CGI doesn't, and Don Bluth always had a very fluid style. As many have said, the film was marketed poorly and didn't fit squarely into a specific demo - too adult for kids, and too kiddish for adults, and animated sci-fi was kind of a hard sell. It was also a bit expensive and FOX animation was in the process of layoffs while it was being made.
One of the odd things I recall about this move was that Creed's song "Higher" was featured in the promotional materials/trailers, but does not appear in the movie or on the soundtrack. That said, the "creed trailer" was amazing - no dialogue - just music and footage.
Agreed. One of my favorites growing up.
My greatest takeaways from this movie was the inspiration that it gave and why humanity was being hunted down; that humanity can achieve anything. A great message.

3. The animation you're thinking of is Rotoscope, and Guardians wanted to tribute Ralph Bakshi's "American Pop" & "Lord of the Rings". This film was Not rotoscope.
12:56 - Shorty's correct. Disney rotoscoped a great deal of their animations, and re-used the original footage on multiple films.
I remember this came out and I thought it was a rip off of Treasure Planet, kinda like what Tom was saying. A lot of the same beats are there. There's a jaded protagonist with daddy issues, a mix of CG and 2D animation, space pirate betrayals, dated 2000s pop music, both flopped at the box office, etc etc
I always held Treasure Planet in higher regard because I liked the characters more, but then I learned that Treasure Planet actually came out AFTER this movie. Now I like Tiitan A.E. a lot more lol
Real bummer this didn't do better. I don't know if it was bad box office timing or lack of marketing or what. Seems like Pixar came out on top when the 90's were said and done. From then on, everyone said "Do like that! Do like that! Make moneys! Dooo!" I guess we still got some direct to video DC and Marvel stuff for a little while but most modern 2D comes from overseas like Japan for instance. I'm just glad I was a kid when I was and that I got to go down to the Disney and Universal parks when I did. Even got up at 3 am one of those mornings to go see a space shuttle take off at like 9 cause of ice problems. Worth it even to a 10 year old by the way.

You got to admit it, this underrated movie has the best soundtrack period. Loved the voice talents and it’s animation. I loved this film as much as Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Empire. Great review, gents.
U should watch the animation movie Heavymetal, with John Candy and Eugene Levy. Plus the sequel with Billy Idol.

Don Bluth is a legend. And I feel like Disney went out of their way to kill his legacy because he was a competitor. He worked for Disney in their early years and then created his own animation studio. They produced a ton of greats like The Land Before Time, Secret Of N.H.I.M., and The Brave Little Toaster. One of the best animators and storytellers of all time. And he didn't insult the intelligence of younger viewers like Disney does every day.

It gets hate? I've always loved this movie, but more importantly, i was under the impression that most other people did too. The worst thing I could say about it is that its not as popular, and therefore is underrated.
It got hate at the time. Then became a cult classic

5:50 "You'll freeze! Instantly!" No, actually... It's true that outer space is _very_ cold, but there's almost nothing to carry heat away from your body. What _actually_ happens is that you fall unconscious, then you die of suffocation, then over the next 24 to 48 hours you slowly freeze into a popsicle. (Either that, or if you're close enough to a star, you get roasted into a crispy critter.)
If you want to see what actually happens when you get exposed to the vacuum of space, you should get around to watching The Expanse.
The animation for the ice nebula is still amazing to this day.
I love this movie, but i admit it is a guilty pleasure. (But one has to love Gune)
The whole “freeze instantly in space” thing is actually a myth, which makes sense when you think about it.
Like, a snowstorm in Antarctica is going to be like 60 degrees below zero, and it will absolutely freeze you solid if you are exposed to it in a t shirt for more than like a minute, but this movie doesn’t show them floating in space for 60 full seconds. It implies that they get tossed out and picked back up within like 5-10 seconds, tops. So, like, if you were running in a T-shirt from one building in Antarctica to another building in that -60 weather and those two buildings were only like 20 feet apart, you could totally make that run in 5-10 seconds and be fine, as long as you actually made it. Same thing with Space. If anything, it would probably be MORE survivable in space, since there is literally no matter surrounding your body in space that could siphon your bodily heat (like cold air, perhaps) you would probably freeze significantly more slowly and would probably suffocate and/or have all of the moisture sucked out of you (though this IS where you would lose the vast majority of your body heat), long before your body heat eventually dissipated. I mean, that would still take a while… like 5-10 minutes, but people have survived drowning for that amount of time relatively unscathed in real life, so as long as the whole moisture sucking thing added on top for a few minutes, it’s totally feasible that they would have survived what they went through well enough to make a full recovery after a few days of over hydrating and not pushing themselves too hard.
Like, the physics of heat transfer don’t suddenly start functioning instantly in space. They work on a gradient, just like everything we experience on earth.
Disney did indeed film actors and animated over them to get the movements correct. They did this in multiple films.
Had this baby on VHS back in the day. Such a great movie! This and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within were some of my favorite sci-fi animations, but no one I knew had ever heard of them.
A great animated movie is Batman Mask of the Phantom. It is consistently chosen in the top Batman movies ever.

Not enough people know of that movie. It is a great sci-fi animation movie with an engaging story
I love this movie. I own a copy on DVD. It was definitely marketed as a kids movie when it seems more for teens/young adults.

The marketing was bad, it wasn't really for young kids, but it didn't do enough to get adults to the theaters and it also came out in the summer which is always tough. It's a pretty good movie.
Another underappreciated favorite of mine that I grew up with. I loved Don Bluth's animated films and loved sci-fi and so this was right up my alley as a kid!
I don't understand the hate either. It's one of my favorite movies ever, especially with the combination of 2D and CGI!
Gotta watch Land Before Time
I went to see this at the pictures and thought it was a great film. I think it was too ahead of its time at the time. It also has elements similar to Arthur C Clarke's book 'The Songs Of Distant Earth'.
Mike Oldfield composed an album based off the book and the music is awesome. Whenever l watch this film back on DVD I often think Oldfield's music would be great here in this scene or that scene. That's not to say the film's music is bad... but if you ever get the chance to listen to Mike Oldfield's 'The Songs Of Distant Earth' you'll know exactly what l mean.

Along with The Two Towers, this has one of the best openings of any film.
Hi guys. Awesome content. I think a few movies you may want to check out are Once Upon a Time in the West (the best western movie, followed by the good the bad and the ugly), Lawrence of Arabia, and also the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window. I think you will enjoy all of these classic masterpieces.
i have a box version of this movie, for a vhs, and it has the shape of the ship, i dont know if it was a version that was a studio preview or a "limited edition" or something, cant find info on it.
All if not most cartoons since Betty Boop have used rotoscoping. Even Disney because they bought out the animators from Fleischer Studios

The type of animation traced over live film is called rotoscoping. It was originally used to get a realistic effect, specifically with the movement of women, before animators had explored such techniques more. It later became popular as a cheap way to create a film, adding all the effects in post animation, such as the Lord Of The Rings animated film.
If you want to see a 21st century example, check out the film “A Scanner Darkly”.

If you guys are open to watching animated movies, you know part of the journey towards seeing EVERY movie that exists means eventually you'll have to get to MY favorite animated movie of all time - the 1986 classic Transformers: The Movie.
I absolutely love this movie. Watched it over and over as a kid and I still love it as an adult. The hand drawn animation and the story is fantastic.
This film and Starchaser Legend of Orin, have been compared to each for so long!!
Disney definitely rotoscoped a lot of their human characters in their early films. and event he later ones, they still had live action references.
A really good film to react to if you know STREET FIGHTER is the Animated film from the late 90s i think if not early 00s
Humans can be Evil, but the Dredge DESTROYED Earth. That makes the Dredge truly Evil

Don Bluths animation is timeless, sadly I agree this was underrated but it does a have fan base and remains a firm classic with me , and the voice actors were amazing, Matt Damon , bill Pullman , drew Barrymore, John leguizamo , Nathan lane , Jeannine grolafalo , and Ron perlman

The "freezing instantly in space" is a movie myth. To cool something, heat must be transfered to something else, and in the void of space, there is not much to transfert anything to. So, no instant freezing.
As for "the end of 2D animation", it might have been the end of american 2D in early 2000, but this style of animation is still produced in Europe and in Japan. So, luckily, no end so far.
All that said, keep making youyr great reaction videos, guys !

I don’t think it got hate per se. It just didn’t get a big audience to go see it. I actually saw it with my dad when it came out and we had a very small audience in the theater we went to.

Why does everyone think this? It's not true. The film actually handles it well.
You'll freeze in an hour. Something like that.
The film has some frustrating cliches with the story and characters, including certain scenes that haven't aged well mainly because of the combination of CGI, physical props, and hand-drawn animation that didn't mix well together. But I have to admit, there are some emotional moments and great animation from time to time. The action, music, and voice-acting are decent (although Matt Damon can be a bit much). It's a serviceable movie that entertains and has nostalgia value to it.
Looking back at the 90s and 2000s, we had it pretty good with films in general. Cliched? Yes. But there was a real passion and love for story-telling. Now-a-days, it's gotten to a point where it's not about telling a good story anymore. Everything is far more political and cynical, plus no originality. And that's something Titan A.E. has that many films these days do not.
I love the film, unfortunately it flopped that badly, it killed the studio.
As far as I know, there was never a follow up film or comic/book.

I love this film. Underrated. I often found myself watching this, Atlantis: The forgotten kingdom and Treasure planet when i was in a sci fi animated film mood. All three kind of compliment eachother and make for a fun evening watching back to back.

This was made by the same people who made my favourite animated film: Anastasia. I would highly recommend that for the next reaction. They don't make animations like this anymore.
John Leguizamo did voice Gune in this and Sid in Ice Age.
I don't get why this film didn't do very well, it's got my favourite occurrence in films; plot twists and I really love non-stop action which is a battle between good and evil

I was already legally an adult when this came out and I loved it.
At the time this was released, there were three novels that accompanied it. The novelization of the film along with two prequels. "Karl's Story" and "Akima's Story" giving a full background for each character. The novelization of the film also included a much more indepth explanation of why the Drej actually feared the humans... (Spoiler alert) the humans are pretty much the bad guys.
