For some reason our editor left the Halloween intro in this edit 😂😂 and in order to stay on schedule it was too late to take out so enjoy anyway 😂
I was JUST about to comment and ask why you still had the halloween intro for this reaction 😂
I did wonder.
Was about to troll y'all for that lol
You guys are great but you need to keep the volume up on your videos. This is the second one where I need to use earphones to hear.
@@WikeddTung I personally find that the volume of the film itself is much lower than that of their comments. I'd prefer that they balance the audio better.
54 years old and that last 'Soooopermannnn' makes me tear up every time...
Same
Always.
Even knowing he survived doesn't stop me from crying, but HE didn't know he would when he sacrificed himself and he did it anyways. 😭
It never fails. It’s the pride in his voice and the smile on his face that gives it so much weight. A genuine masterpiece.
This was Brad Bird's first directive film after leaving the Simpsons. Also this is one of the first animated films where all the animation is in 2D except for the Giant, who was done in CGI 3D.
"Also this is one of the first animated films where all the animation is in 2D except for the Giant, who was done in CGI 3D."
At least 2 Disney films were 2D/3D mix before Iron Giant came out.
"The Great Mouse Detective" and "Beauty and the Beast".
The former came out in the mid 80s, and used CG 3D for the internal machinery of Big Ben's clocktower.
Incidentally that Big Ben scene was a rip off of a clocktower fight scene in Hayao Miyazaki's first directorial effort "Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro".
Great movie. "You are who you choose to be. Superman." That line still gets me.
Why can't DC just hire Brad Bird? Iron Man is the Superman movie we all deserved.
That twist at the end is still excellent.
You’re so convinced that that nuclear missile blew him into oblivion, but then the moment you see the scree tapping the windowsill giving off the blue light, you’re like “Oh yeah! He can fix himself! HELL YES!”
Gives you such a rush man!
I know that there’s a possible plot-hole here in how are all his pieces still intact and not horrifically dented from the blast when we see him at the end in Iceland. I’ve always put it down to him being made of an alien metal made of some near-indestructible components that nothing Earth/man made can destroy.
The whole backstory of why the Giant can fix himself is actually really sweet and again stems from Ted Hughes’ original story.
He wrote the book as a means to comfort his children after they lost their Mum/Hughes lost his wife, and as a metaphor of sorts to say he’d always be there for them, he depicted in the book a giant friendly robot that can endlessly fix himself if he’s ever damaged.
That’s so sweet it hurts.
Yeah......
Hughes wife Sylvia Plath killed herslef though?
Also Hughes died just the year before this came out, not sure if that was the driving force of the proposa or not.
The book got written in 1968, I died a little when you guys said its not that original of a story 😅
Ha! That said, this is a very loose adaptation. No space dragons to be seen.
From what I remember, the only aspects that made it from the book are the name and a giant metal man.
It doesn't have much to do with the original book. It's more influenced by the day the earth stood still
@@simonoleary9264the self repair was in the book I think but that's it really
"WHERE'S THE GIANT, MANSLEY?!" will always be my favorite quote from this movie.
I always SOB when the iron giant sacrifices himself to save the town. "You are who you choose to be." "Superman" AHHHHHHHHHH
Mad to think alot of people overlook the fact the robot was there to destroy but got damaged at some point (the dent in his head) and was able to become friendly! When it thinks Hogarth died it become complete and sets out to fufill its objective..... Heavy
No need to get angry
So, he's Goku?
Actually, personally I think that they left it purposely vague. When the dent popped out, he remembered how to use his weapons. My theory is that he was sent as an ambassador, prepared for both peace and war, depending on how the Earthlings acted. Hence why his weapons are activated by self-defense.
@@WisteriaDrake There is no theory. The deleted scene that got added back in with the Signature Edition shows them as world destroyers. None of the other giants are shown to have that bump.
There was actually a deleted scene where the Giant is dreaming/remembering when he and a bunch of other metal giants were wiping out an alien civilisation. It ended up transmitting on Dean TV which made him suspicious of the Giant
I was just going to mention this!
It is included in the Signature Edition that came out in 2015. I think that is the version they have based on the bluray box art at the beginning. ruclips.net/video/obLtyj8hfFk/видео.html
Noooooo, you left out the 'Superman' before the boom, instant tears every time!
They also left out all the context about choice and the part of him choosing to act as Superman rather than Atomo which gives it meaning.
The ending where the Giant envisions himself as Superman get me in the feels every time.
I seem to remember that this film was not very successful at the box office, but over time, has developed a huge following and appreciation.
At risk of bringing up anime, Spirited Away is a beautiful film and definitely a childhood treasure of mine. Along with a nightmare before Christmas. Used to watch it every year.
Spirited Away is very good, but overly emphasized because it was the first Ghibli film to really make a dent in western markets.
Miyazaki made better films - one of which (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) inspired one of its production artists to design an entire mecha franchise around a character (Neon Genesis Evangelion).
@@mnomadvfx It was the first for a reason. Stop trying to be smart. Anyway they asked for childhood films and that's a childhood film of mine. Love Evangelion btw
I've always loved how this film looked, especially the warmth that it seems to have. Reminds me of the difference between stuff filmed on film as opposed to digital.
Yeah they were right that it's a lot like treasure planet.
Shaun "those are the kind aliens". Me - snorting with laughter!
What a movie...so much love for this movie
18:30, in the extended version, the giant has a nightmare about his past life, as he and others like him were made by a race of extra terrestrials whom wanted to conquer the universe, but the giant lost his memory sometime in the past, and found his way to Earth.
I was 21 when this was released and watched it at the cinema, and bawled my eyes out. As did the other 2 people I was with. The masterstroke here was to set it in 1957 at the height of Cold War paranoia in the US.
A perfect movie that thankfully has much more respect now than when it was released. The documentary on that Blu-Ray (it looks like the same one I have) is fascinating and you should watch it.
Hey, someone else who saw it in theaters! My experience was the same, it just me, my sister and a couple of others in the theater, and ended up being way more than I expected.
Said it before and I’ll say it again, a perfect film, and my favourite film of all time.
I don’t use that term “perfect” very often myself, but in terms of what it sets out to do, it does feel genuinely perfect. If someone asked me to improve it, I wouldn’t. Not a single scene that feels out of place or tacked on, no line of dialogue that’s inappropriate for a scene, it’s impeccably well done!
Nostalgic animated film for me is "Watership Down". It was very violent in my young mind at the time. But I loved it. Netflix did a version of it in a limited series which is imo very good, but nothing beats the original.
The animation still holds up today, it's so beautifully done.
Awe Tom's face at the end... proper childlike amazement! Great reactions to a fabulous animated classic 👏
Only thing that stops this from being a perfect movie for me.. I grew up in Maine... not one character here has a Maine accent not even the old fishermen.., and it's the 50s. It would be like if they set a movie in Yorkshire but if everyone spoke with a generic London accent. Still, great movie.
Fair. I'm from southern Louisiana, and tbh most of the time it comes out worse when they _do_ try. They usually sound like they're from 500 miles away, or time travelers from 150 years ago.
Nostalgic animated film for me is The Land Before Time. I was super into dinosaurs.
I didn't see Iron Giant until I was a teen, it's a kool movie. Holds up well. Totally agree with you both on your breakdown. Two thumbs up! yay.
I saw this movie in the theater and loved it but the theater was almost empty. Probably one of the best movies when viewed with a film makers eye. The transitions, the mood lit animation, the soundtrack the pace and the theme of love and sacrifice overcoming the ultimate 1950s fear which was the atom bomb. This movie never gets the appreciation it deserves.
I know I was a just a little bit too old for this film when I finally saw it, but I certainly appreciate it as I am older.
This movie never fails to make me cry. "Superman." Ugh, I can't.
Thank-you for reacting to this wonderful film! I wasn't aware you guys reacted to animated movies, so this was a treat.
7:30
I believe the phrase you're looking for is every frame a painting, usually ascribed to Stanley Kubrick, meaning every frame is composed in the exact way you wish it, whether it's how the film is shot or how it is edited.
please watch the 'Black swan (2010)' or 'Roma (2018)'
So excited to see this! One of my favorite animated movies I’ve done on the channel!!
Sup nick
For a unique animation style, check out Loving Vincent from 2017. It's about an investigation of Vincent Van Gogh's death, and the entire film is oil painted (the world's only fully painted film) in his style. It's absolutely beautiful.
Another film I adore. It's so touching, the world is rich, and the characters are amazing. Such a great choice. As always: finish Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy: 2) Prince of Darkness and 3) In the Mouth of Madnes.
In the Mouth of Madness has no real connection to anything.
It's just cloud cuckoo land compard to everything else Carpenter made.
It's probably the only one of his films beyond Halloween and Elvis I haven't watched multiple times.
It's one of my all-time favorite movies. There's a certain satisfaction one gets to see others enjoy and appreciate something that you thought was your undiscovered gem. This wasn't too popular when it originally came out. Glad to see it's gotten a recent revival on the interwebs. 🤓
PS: you guys were fun to watch 👍
This is such a great movie.. childhood memories for me❤️
So glad you guys watched this one, it's one of my childhood favourites. Even though he's a villain, I can't help but like Kent. You can tell Christopher McDonald had fun voicing him.
P.S., Tom's excited expression at 15:08 was brilliant.
My favorite animated movie. As an adult, you can see how multi-layered it is.
Another masterpiece that was a box office flop is The Shawshank Redemption the #1 best film of all time, on IMDB.
Was not expecting a gun violence discussion to be at the end of the Iron Giant reaction, but in hindsight maybe I should have hahaha
Either way, I do think that this film is firmly in the camp of "anti-violence/pro-love" no matter what.
I already watched this on your Patreon page, and now I'm watching it again. Great movie, great reaction! (And if people haven't signed up for your Patreon, I highly recommend it! Come and join all the Cinema Rulers! ... or "cinners", or whatever we are.)
Wonderful piece of cinema. What an absolute gem this film is!
talking about animation, and beautiful shots disney's Dinosaur is so underrated as a film. One of my favs.
One of the producers was Pete Townshend, who produced a musical version of the book under its original name "Iron Man".
Great choice.
I loved it when first played in the film theaters. I still do with 63 🤗
The original is a children's book by Ted Hughes from 1968 and just a little different as in the film.
Belleville rendezvous is a great animation you guys should react to.
I remember reading the book "The Iron Man" at school and then they made a film, classic, i'd give it an 8!
This movie is still amazing everytime you watch it. It's timeless!!!
This was one of the staples of my childhood. Alongside Atlantis and treasure planet. Another animation that has an excellent story, and I'm not sure if you have seen it, is Titan A.E. It's not a magnum opus or anything, but a very enjoyable watch nontheless.
I have been binge watching ALL of your videos these past few weeks. You guys are literally HILARIOUS! I put up one of your videos EVERY DAY during my lunch hour at work. Your humor and banter never fails to brighten up my day and make me laugh out loud! XD I get my paycheck tomorrow and I'm definitely signing up for your patreon. Keep up the amazing work guys!
I grew up with this movie and me and my family quote it all the time!! I’m so happy you guys watched this!!!! 😊
oh my gosh the "you stay, i go. no following" and "you are who you choose to be.....SUPERMAN" parts always get me so emotional. It's just something about nonhuman things showing human emotion that makes me emotional
I'm wondering, since you lads are British, have you ever seen "The Wizard of Oz?" With Judy Garland and Frank Morgan? If you haven't, that would be my childhood movie pick.
Ehhhhhhhh???????
Wizard of Oz is an American film.
Baum, the author of the Oz books was also American.
(Also a pro genocidal cunt, but I digress)
In case you guys didn't know, Dean is voiced by Harry Connick Jr.
a.k.a one of the greatest and most popular Jazz musicians of our time.
Fitting he'd play a beatnik lol
I appreciate this film (and I also want more theatrical 2D animation over - or as well as - the CG stuff), but it came out when I was 20 so can't be a childhood classic for me.
I work in animation and I think I'm the only one in the company who never watched Disney as a kid, my classics are Transformers the Movie and The Flight of Dragons.
This one is one of my favorites from childhood without a doubt. If I had to recommend any others, I'd say Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Prince of Egypt
My animated childhood movies were The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Ferngully.
Non-animated movies were The Goonies, Gremlins, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, Batman, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Hook, and Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood Prince of Thieves which is not a kids movie at all, but we had it on VHS and loved it.
Not going to watch this one because I still can't stomach the heart wrenching ending to this film, but I'll do my part and leave the like for the bois!
The Giant starts to piece himself back together, so it's a happy ending
Another great reaction and review guys, always entertaining. Other animated films you might well enjoy and would also be interesting reactions in this vein would be Coco, My Life as a Courgette, and the very rarely seen Mary & Max; just some ideas.
Back to bingeing your movies and your question at the end asking what were our nostalgic movies had me so excited to tell you a whole bunch!! lol
So, I was born in 64...so I'm old...but I love different genres of movies and certain movies for different reasons.
Here goes:
The Birds from 1963 - Alfred Hitchcock
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from 1968 - Great movie for all ages
Easy Rider from 1969 - My mom and stepdad saw this on their first date. I saw it much later and LOVED IT!
7 Faces of Dr. Lao from 1964 - Sunday movie show on TV when I was a kid, first it scared me...later in life is when I realized how good it was.
Island At The Top Of The World from 1974 - For my birthday my mom took me and my friends to see this in the movie theater, never forgot it.
The Land That Time Forgot from 1974 - I'm a HUGE Doug McClure fan...it's a Doug McClure movie.
The People That Time Forgot from 1977 - Doug McClure again.
Humanoids From The Deep from 1980 - And yet another Doug McClure movie. 😁
Planet Of The Apes from 1968 - Who's not a Planet Of The Apes Fan? The old ones are classic. Not a fan of James Franco, so the remakes with him...😝
Beneath The Planet Of The Apes from 1970
Escape From The Planet Of The Apes from 1971
Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes from 1972
Battle For The Planet Of The Apes from 1973
The Warriors from 1979 - I can honestly say I've seen this movie a gazillion times, whether it came on TV or cable I would watch it. Twice in a day...it didn't matter. It's in my top 5 movies.
Fantastic Voyage from 1966 - I'm a Raquel Welch fan and I love Sci-Fi
One Million Years B.C. - Raquel's movie from the famous poster hanging up in Andy's cell in Shawshank...the warden calls her "Fuzzy Britches".
Hannie Caulder from 1971 - Raquel again...in a Western.
The Cowboys from 1971 - John Wayne...do I need to say more?
McClintock from 1963 - John Wayne...again, do I need to say more?
I'm a HUGE Beatles fan, so here are their movies:
A Hard Days Night from 1964
HELP! from 1965
The Magical Mystery Tour from 1967
Yellow Submarine (cartoon) from 1968
I'd be excited if you did at least one of these!! I'm a huge movie fan I believe since coming out of the womb. I can name a movie seeing one scene, I can name an actor after they speak one sentence. I totally piss my fiance off when I recognize an old actor and tell him what movies they were in when they were young...or vice versa. 😁 I love pissing him off. lol
My #1 favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption. I've heard you mention it, but I don't see that you've done it, so I guess you've watched it before the channel. I love all the Stephen King books made into movies, I've seen them all and read the books as well.
Anyway, before I write a book on movies, I really hope you at least do one of these. I promise you won't be disappointed. You might think a few are cheesy...maybe. 😆 You guys are AWESOME!
~Dawne
Interesting choice for the Halloween and Thanksgiving / general holiday season. It is a very good film.
Trying again for THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1996) starring Val Kilmer. True story about two killer lions. Thank you
honestly this movies makes me cry everytime get the ending when he says i got you, you stay
You guys 💯% need to watch “The Giant’s Dream” documentary on the special features for The Iron Giant signature edition. One of the best behind the scenes documentaries ever made.
I'm so glad people are rediscovering this movie because it made hardly any money when it first came out. The studio didn't have much faith in it and barely advertised it. Sure the Boy and his Dog/Alien/Robot story has been done before, but like Tom said the movie went places he didn't expect. I think a movie can have similar story beats but still subvert the plot a little and make it its own.
The original ending had the iron giant dying for real. But they did an audience test and they found it far too sad to have the giant dying at the end of the story, especially for a kids film. And it's a shame we couldn't see any version of the original. It would have been beautifully foreshadowed with the deer. Plus Howgarth and the Giant talking about souls, death and what dying means is such a good healthy way to talk about death and grief - ESPECIALLY IN A CHILDS FILM. I can't think of any modern film that is a kids movie that directly talks about it so up front like this (I dont think casper the friendly ghost counts) .
Saying that though, I do think it was the better decision to change it. Just because death and grief can be bleak and hard to deal with doesn't mean it has to always be involved in a kids film. I don't think the meaning is lost due to the ending and I think you're right, that it is a beacon of hope. Glad you could enjoy the film though, its one of my personal favourites and a classic in my books. Other classics would probably be Monsters Inc and tarzan, both amazing in very different ways.
"Souls don't die."
lol that would have destroyed 9yo me. I could read between the lines and knew that was the "real" ending, but it would have been harsh. At the time I actually liked that this movie was upfront with heavier themes. I first watch Alien and Terminator around the same time, so I was like... "hit me with the real" lol.
Absolutely love this film.
For more cool animated films, I can highly recommend the two Wes Anderson films Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isles of Dogs. Totally brilliant stop-motion animated films, very charming.
I feel old. LOL
I was working in Glendale on Futurama at the time, and Iron Giant was being worked on right up the street.
Had a few friends working on it, and we would occasionally get together for lunch. We would get to visit their offices and vice versa.
Those were some fun crazy days in Glendale. :D
Definitely a better sad story than titanic lol, yes of course the iron giant is such a depressing but a masterpiece of an animated film :D
Ha this was cute, it was like you guys were boys watching a toon, minus the squirrel pedo jokes! I wonder what film made Tom so desperate for a happy ending?! 😁❤🤟🏾
Tom: “Are they the kind aliens or are they the probing kind?”
Shaun: “Those are the kind aliens.” 😆
Love this feature length film. My fave animation film of all time with a poignant message.
When I was 10 and saw this, this was one of those movies that impacted me super hard, even though I wouldn't consider it to be like, my favorite movies being that age, but it was so mind blowing to me, that it was one of those really serious animated movies, almost geared more for older kids/teenagers, but still family appropriate. Mind you I had already seen movies like Jurassic Park, The lost world, Mars Attacks, by that point too, so I was no stranger to heavy themes of movies. My mind was further blown like 10 to 12 years later when I found out Vin Diesel voiced the giant, which now that I'm older can totally hear.
Same! I definitely recognize it as one of those sleeper hits from back then. I was starting to watch serious horror movies around that time like Alien etc., so it was impressive to see a more complex animated film that didn't gloss over the heavy stuff too much. I wasn't something in our tape collection back then but I think it's aged better than almost any other kids' movie from that time.
This movie brings back so many memories from when my boys were little 🥰
Just because this animation reminds me of it but you guys should react to titan ae as well. Love that movie
another classic for me is "Treasure Planet" a wonderful Disney film that Disney basically self sabotaged on it initial release.
this was the first film that combined hand drawn animation and computer generated animation together. the Giant is 3D modeled and animated if I remember correctly.
Great film, one we first got on dvd when we first got a dvd player and watched it loads with the kids when they were small
@3:29 - 4:23, my favorite exchange in this episode; it cracks me up every time.
The Iron Giant is my absolute favourite animated film. I love it so much.
such a classic, an amazing movie, one of the best animated movies, easy 9/10, so glad it got more and more popular as years gone by, it wasnt successful at all when it came out, but now its getting the recognition it deserves :) Atlantis the Lost Empire is another very underrated animated film, if you guys havent seen it you could check it out :) Prince of Egypt is amazing as well that would be very worthy of a reaction :)
12:35 - Funny you say, "He's Iron Man." The book that the film is based on is literally titled The Iron Man. For the film, they changed the title to The Iron Giant so to avoid confusion. XD
I love this movie. For a long time it was my son's favorite movie, and sometimes he still goes around playing like he's the Iron Giant. Finally old enough to understand why this movie made mommy cry every time we watched it.
ETA mine would have to be Disney's 1973 Robin Hood - quite literally wore out the VHS tape when I was a kid I watched it so often.
I would recommend Sandlot, Now & Then, and My Dog Skip. I liked them when I was younger. The second movie I suggested is a little girly but it is a good coming of age film.
Superb film, though no, not childhood for me; I was already an adult when this released. I am however, super nostalgic for The Rocketeer (1991) as I was still young enough at that point. Also Flight of the Navigator (1986) I used to watch that all the time with my father when I was a kid.
Timeless and as good as it gets...
This movie gets me every time 🤖
My favorite movie growing up, thanks for reacting to it
It's sad that some people just come to click dislike
Bad day much? ;)
Great reaction, as always.
Anyone remember the movie "9"?
Classic! Would love a live action remake of this movie! While Vin Diesel is still alive please Hollywood!!
i still cry at the "superman" scene. i choked up watching it here.
I hated this movie when it first came out, but I was like 11 so I don’t think I really understood it. Rewatched it a few years back for the first time and sobbed. It’s such a great movie
This is my favorite kids film I watch it every year can't wait to show it to my kids
My sister took me to see this in theaters when I was nine. At first I thought it was some B-movie because I hadn't heard of it, so I had sort of low expectations. I left the theater... shook up lol. I'd almost completely forgotten about it until a couple of years ago when I saw it's now considered a cult classic, so I rewatched it. I was just enjoying the nostalgia, and then around 60% of the way through, I _remembered_ and it hit me like a truck. To me, this is maybe the peak 90s kid movie while also being sort of an intimate, IYKYK kind of movie.
"That's the same Iron Man move......" 13:00
The original novel this was loosely based on is actually called "The Iron Man".
My favourite animated film of all time. Brad Bird made a classic.
EDIT: I actually prefer Tomorrowland to Ghost Protocol.
Cool an animated movie! I love this one
Anachronisms; This movie takes place in 1957
- USS Nautilus never carried nuclear weapons
- First sub launched missile was in 1960
- Dean is called a "Beatnik" A term that wasn't even coined until 1958
- F-86 sabre jets' fire missiles at the Giant........thou the planes are historically accurate, the missiles are not
-
- Maine was never menaced by a giant robot from outer space, in 1957 or any other year
I love this movie. Watched it as a kid.
