I grew up with this movie, have seen it countless times and that ending always has me in tears; sad tears at the explosion then happy tears when Giant's putting himself back together. Ugh this movie crushes it so hard.

The town's name Rockwell most likely come from American artist Norman Rockwell who was famous for his paintings of life in small town America in the 50s.

I cry every time I watch this beautiful movie and then comes the part where the giant repeats Hogarth's words and flies off to meet his destiny. beautiful moment very touching. Reminds me of E.T. when he shines his finger over Elliot's head and repeats the words to comfort him in the final farewell.

It's really hard to find a movie that makes me cry, but these did it:
Interstellar, The Land Before Time, My Girl, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

Here is some interesting facts about the film.
The Iron Man: The Musical concept album, released in 1989, is an adaptation of Ted Hughes' story The Iron Man(1968), produced and largely composed and performed by Pete Townshend of The Who. It also stars Roger Daltrey, Deborah Conway, John Lee Hooker, and Nina Simone. The three then-surviving members of The Who (Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Townshend) performed as a group in two songs. A full stage version was mounted at the Young Vic theatre in London in 1993. On the strength of this, Warner Bros. optioned the story for a movie which, with a very different adaptation of the story, became The Iron Giant; Townshend received an Executive Producer credit for the film version. the original story had TIM coming to earth, befriending Hogarth and eventually the whole town, and defeating a giant galaxy sized alien dragon that wants to eat the earth.
Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this movie as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?"
"Frank" and "Ollie," the two trainmen that Kent interviews after the derailment, are caricatures of Disney classic animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston two animators of classic Disney films and cartoons and two members of Disney's famed Nine Old Men. They also perform the voices for the characters.
The Signature Edition(2015) adds two new scenes that were storyboarded for the original film, but were never fully animated until this release. In the first, Dean and Annie have a conversation at the diner right before the farmer sells dean the tractor with the bite taken out of it. In the second, the Iron Giant has a dream in which he leads an army that takes over and destroys a alien world that is seen by dean on the TV , explaining the scene in the final film of him telling Hogarth the giant is dangerous. also In the original, Hogarth finds the Giant's hand watching the TV, showing an advertisement for Maypo Cereal. Director Brad Bird initially wanted an ad for the Disneyland attraction Tomorrowland. Disney would not not grant clearance to use this footage back 1999, when the film was originally shown. Disney allowed the footage to finally be used when Brad Bird directed the film version of Tomorrowland , which was released the same year as the Signature Edition. The one i have is the The Ultimate Collector’s limited Edition number 1,230 of 15,000 that includes: - A letter from Director Brad Bird to the fans - Five Mondo Art Cards - Beautiful 32-Page Book - Collectible Iron Giant Figurine and the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD Combo Pack

ok ive been watching a bunch of reactions of iron giant and ive said something different each time. i LOVE the lense that you're watching through, going over more nuanced parts of the actual workings of the movie, pointing out when things are subtle 3D renders and stuff like that.
on iron giant itself, i LOVE that christopher mcdonald played kent. didnt know/realize who he was as a kid while watching, but as an adult it makes sense why i hated kent so much. christopher's performance sells it perfectly. "the biggest thing in this town is probably the homecoming queen- oh my GAHT"

“Rockwell” can be interpreted in three ways…
1; Area 51 in Roswell, New Mexico
2; Norman Rockwell, who painted in the 1950’s art deco style and used a lot of the fall color pallets in the movie
3; it’s an obvious reference to real coastal mid-Maine lobstering towns like Rockport

Great reaction. An unusual Cold War film is the 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate. It's (unusual for the time) anti-war and anti-government. The 90s version isn't as good.

If you liked the way the ocean waves were done, and liked the way the 2D artists accomplished light and shadow, go _way_ back to Max and Dave Fleischer's "Gulliver's Travels", sort of their answer to "Snow White", but with more limited studio capabilities. There are some beautifully executed scenes and it deserves not to remain obscure.

The emotional “I go, you stay, no following.” Was forever ruined for me by a 4chan post where the Anon posting messes up the line and says “You go, I stay, no following”
And the mental image of Iron Giant chucking Hogarth at the nuke has been making me giggle uncontrollably for years.

Not sure if this will be seen but i just recently noticed this about the movie. When the giant becomes enraged he never actually kills anyone. He targets the weapons and guns first. He just hates weapons because they kill.

Actually, the original storyboard of that scene (interrogation scene) shows that Hogarth was knocked out twice (the first one originally was when he was running towards the door, he screams "Mom!" and he was knocked out by chloroform and then he wakes up, sitting on the chair, and the second one was the original release after Hogarth gives the location of the Giant to Kent Mansley and then he walks behind Hogarth and fools him saying that it was a bad dream).
It was too creepy that the first one was scrapped.
This is the original storyboard video of that scene.
