Stargate fandom holds its own. It needed each successive show to grow into a cohesive whole. SG1 establishes the cosmos and ideology of the galaxy, Atlantis expands our operating theatre to multiple galaxies, and Stargate Universe introduced us to the pan-galactic massive reach of the influence of the long-gone civilization who invented and seeded the stargates. And at no point does it ever feel like we humans truly mastered the first part of this explosion of scope. So... it serves well enough. It's just hard to celebrate the space shows that lead directly to confirmation of our relative insignificance and inability to execute our higher ideals all that well despite mountains of effort by some. It's not a pretty show. But it can be hopeful. It's just not ever pretty.
I still like Atlantis, and really did back in the day. But you could easily cut out Atlantis and lose nothing. It really doesn't add anything other than more sg-1 style written adventures somewhere else with new people - with little added overall that required Atlantis to add those things. The Asgard were already in another galaxy, that was part of the show for a long time.
Universe added something unique to the show to really expanded the story to an insane scale that felt real. SG-1 expanded pretty much all the lore generally. Atlantis was a fun and enjoyable cash grab for the most part, more of the same because they knew it would be profitable. Still a good show, but it really wasn't needed and does feel a little stale by the end.
I recently watched the entirety of Stargate SG-1. I was skeptical at first, but it gets great and it's just one of those shows that's simply fun to watch due to the characters and stories.
my fav story arc has to be the episodes with the replicators
Season 1 is rough as they were really trying to find their groove and struggled to establish the team dynamic, especially with the new characters. Not much of a fan of the last season, but everything from season 2 until then i could gladly rewatch. Imo it is somewhat held back by the episodic nature at the time, but once they started to move into overarching story lines there's some really good stuff in there.
Stargate Atlantis is just as good as SG-1!
the movie is good but Stargate SG-1 is amazing, one of the best sci-fi tv shows out there
I agree. Stargate Atlantis is also amazing. Universe had a weird start, but it did get a lot better as it went on. Shame it ended the way it did. I think they'd genuinely enjoy them. And every Star Trek fan i know that's seen Stargate, loves the shows too.
This movie is way better than those TV series.
@@JohnnyZenith no not at all. The Fanbase of the SG Series is way bigger than the movie. Its a SciFi Classic with so much iconic characters
@@JohnnyZenith wrong, but close
Watched all and preferred the lore and aesthetics of the film. Enjoyed the series but the retcon of the alien to a brain slug was dumb and unnecessary.
Stargate aka the only movie where James Spader doesn't play a pervert, a psychopath, or a perverted psychopath. But seriously, this is one of my favorite films and I'm so glad you guys watched it!
Love that you guys checked this out - it's definitely one of those franchise that if you were into it at the time you were jacked in for life. As a kid in the 90s I loved watching Stargate on VHS with a nice hot pot in the rainy evenings; I remember my grand parents bought me a book on Egyptology for Christmas and I was so excited. I watched all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and the extra movies, 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis and 2 seasons of Stargate Universe - even caught the animated series they did briefly. It's hard to say if it'd be worth the time investment in 2023 but I know for sure that for television shows alongside Buffy that Stargate was my passion growing up.
The best part of this fandom was how our fondness forced them to retcon a better Goa'uld controlling entity (as an intelligent parasite, rather than some spirit force) for the series, to take the concept more seriously. The creators were always responsive to fan criticism, except perhaps in the romance/love interests. Stargate: Universe, the last of the franchise's series, had huge potential, but sadly it lasted only briefly, without enough support for the writers, imo. It was perhaps too high concept for the sci-fi palate of the times. I hear there's been talk of bringing that series back.
What I liked about the movie and the series is how it is more realistic on the exploration part. They take equipment, wear practical clothing with pockets, scout the areas with a good mix of scientists and military, and just take it seriously.
I saw this in the theater back in the day, and I loved every minute of it. I really miss movies having these epic, adventurous musical scores with actual memorable melodies. So much better than the generic background music we get these days most of the time. Todays director's just don't understand how important music is to engrain a movie into our memories and to make its success last.
Yes. Conan the Barbarian (1982) is another prime example of epic soundtrack.
I really like the original Stargate movie and would rate it an 8 out 10 for sure. The series builds on the movie and grows into something amazing. Overall, it doesn't have the production values of a feature film (obviously) but it is thrilling, imaginative, and builds the characters well over its run. I would highly recommend watching the first season, and would love to see you guys react to it.
Not sure I agree about production value, I would argue the pilot for sg-1 holds up better today as a production than the film does. And sg-1 just gets better as it goes.
Luckily, by the end of Season 1, it starts to find its footing, so definitely go for it. Of course, like most great shows from the 90s, the real impactful stuff and real quality stuff hit after multiple seasons, so hopefully you'd want to continue it on your own. It's one of my favorite shows/universes. Truly awesome
SG Atlantis is awesome as well!
SG1 is an amazing series that pretty much just keeps getting better. The cast has so much charm and personality, the universe is (mostly) well thought out, and the progression of power and stakes never feels rushed or unnatural. I've seen other reactors do full series reactions and they always seem to have a blast.
Hell yeah watch the series. It's way more in depth than the movie. Take it easy on the first few seasons as in most series (especially long running ones) they take a while to find their footing. But they get better and better as they continue. The characters really get fleshed out. I think you will love it.
I'm definitely here for a SG-1 watch. From memory the first season isn't really the strongest, but it stays pretty true to the tone throughout. Stargate Atlantis is enjoyable too, but watch a few seasons of SG-1 first.
I'd love to see you do SG1 reactions. It's one of my all-time favourite TV shows!
Thank you Tom for such an excellent choice. I watched SG-1 and Atlantis because of this underrated gem. I also really enjoyed the banter between you and Shaun👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😎
The combination of ancient Egypt and sci-fi is such a cool concept.
If you do plan to watch SG-1, you will have to watch Stargate Atlantis as well as it is a cross-over series of SG-1. There is 2 additional Stargate films but they are the finished stories of SG-1. Stargate Universe ended on a cliffhanger as the show was cancelled before they finished the story.
I'm all for it. ☺️ I want to see your reaction of Stargate SG1.
Film is okay, but i think the TV series are where Stargate is at its best.
Warp speed, Hyperspace, and a Gate. There was just something charming about this. Everything!
Stargate: Atlantis was amazing!
My favorite childhood film is Superman: The Movie (1978)
I saw Stargate in the theater when it came out (I think I was a sophomore in college). I really enjoyed it, but I was also slightly disappointed to find out the Anubis/Horus guys were just people in fancy masks rather than aliens who actually looked like that. This film needs more General Hammond, though. :D
One of my favorite newish sci-fi franchises over the past few years,
I enjoyed watching them all; SG-1, Atlantis and Universe are quite good overall and really flesh out the Stargate universe nicely in my opinion.
I love this movie a lot!! The shows even more! I've seen SG1, ATLANTIS AND UNIVERSE at least twice throughout the years. Great fun and I definitely recommend seeing them if you can.
I would love to see season 1 on the channel.
Starget SG-1 is a rare case of a series based on a movie improving on the movie.
Stargate SG-1 was my first Sci-Fi series. It & this movie will always hold a special place for me.
Watch the tv show? Yes! Do it! I think I only saw one reactor doing that show, and he failed me. You would corner the market for the Stargate fans.
Do It! The whole enchilada.
I have watched Stargate both movie and TV shows growing up and it is my childhood, I could watch it whenever, and not get tired of it! Welcome to the Stargate fandom!
I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU GUYS TO WATCH THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went into the cinema to watch this film with no advanced knowledge of what I was getting into. I walked out tickled pink. Everything about it was fun. The idea of instantaneous interstellar travel using a giant dialing device. The use of Egyptian mythology to ground the fantasy into our reality. Not a massive blockbuster, but a fun one with unlimited potential. I wouldn't give the film an 8 but I gave it a 10.5 on its imaginative potential. The film had promise but its the TV series that fulfilled its potential. I hold my breath in the hopes you will react to it.
And if you're playing 3D chess about your channel, this would be a good show to pick up. At some point in the next year or two new productions of the Star Gate series are sure to begin and there will bhe a hell of a lot of buzz about the show. There is a dedicated fan base here. This would serve your channel well.
It’s a great sci-fi movie adventure of the 90s and great special effects before Independence Day came. Roland Emmerich is a top notch director before the Moonfail flick came. Great reaction, gents.
I would love to see you watch season one. I'm here for it.
I agree with you. The beginning is my favorite part of the movie, but I really enjoy all of it.
Great react! One of my faves. SGU was my favorite of the series, but also the lowest rated 😅 it was cancelled after only 2 seasons, and left us on a huge cliffhanger.
yea it was visualy so great. But i think it was their time ahead and the marketing of it totally failed. The camerawork, effects, actors etc was such an well rounded series with cult potencial…
I loved the film., but I recon you'd enjoy the SG-1 series more.
Whilst maintaining the seriousness of the plot, the characters are more charismatic, and deliver a lighter, often comedic baseline. The character development is great.
I grew up a Star Trek kid but I think I love Stargate more and I didn’t discover it until years later. I introduced the series to a zoomer and they love it. Check it out!
The thing about the TV show is that it starts off great and then every season until about season 8 is progressively better than the last. It does plateau from season 8 onward due to diminishing returns but does not drop off at all. I'm sure the sheer length of it seems daunting, particularly when you add the two spinoff series (one of which, Atlantis, is almost as good as SG-1) and the tv movies that rounded out the show once it ended, but it is _oh_ so worth it. Stargate is probably my favourite TV franchise after Star Trek.
As someone who is obsessed with SG-1, I will always respect this movie for setting up that universe.
"It is not about time travel" - Well, actually, in the series there are instances where the Stargate is used to do exactly that, albeit by accident.
Just halfway through atm, but the Bomb that he arms in the beginning.
I'm assuming that the orders were to asess if the other side of the Gate was friendly, Neutral or Hostile, and if Hostile nuke the gate on the other side to prevent whatever evil entities they found from reaching Earth and putting all of humanity in danger.
came to write the same thing. It's quite logical really that we would not like a potential stronger enemy on the other side to get instant access to earth.
The 3x series are for me the ,,real,, stargate where the iconic figures are coming from. Such an great franchise, sad that Stargate Universe got cancelled.
I think a big part of why I love this movie so much is the nostalgia. It doesn't draw me in as effectively as it did back when I first saw it, but I still love it pretty hard. Most likely because of the nostalgia, as I said, plus Kurt Russel and James Spader.
STARGAAAAAAAAAATE!!!!!!
Yes.
P.S. Please do check out SG1 season 1, I think Shaun'll vibe well with O'neill (2 L's).
Stargate spawned three television series;
Stargate SG-1 (1997 - 2007)
Stargate: Atlantis (2004 - 2009)
Stargate: Universe (2009 - 2011)
I never got into Star Wars or Star Trek but Stargate was my jam.
In a way, Stargate was an offspring of the tv show The Time Tunnel.
A giant hell yes on the show.
06:54 the practical effect of the stargate is: the camera is in a water tank - and they blast a jet-engine into it. Then remove the surrounding water and... you get the KAWOOSH! of the stargate.
I was totally fascinated with Egyptian history and science fiction as a child - this movie was the culmination.
I didn’t have HBO so I wasn’t able to watch the TV show when it originally aired but I found it less compelling than the film.
I think this is the first movie I saw the summer we moved back to the United States in 1994.
Gonna keep this spoiler free but also help give you some idea what to expect so you aren't taken off-guard. The tv shows were popular enough for SG:1 to last 10 seasons, and then two straight to dvd sequel movies finishing off a few plot threads. Stargate Atlantis lasted 5 respectable seasons. And Stargate Universe lasted 2. It's fanbase is still passionate about the tv shows. By the way, regarding SG:1 season 1, it's by far the weakest season of the show. But it's still not bad at all in my opinion. A few bad episodes here and there. And a bit too episodic. But season two really takes things up a notch and from there it's just incredible television. Just bare that in mind if you do watch the first season. Don't let the bad or just ok episodes put you off. It gets a lot better. I think while Michael Shanks by his own admission was just imitating Spader for the first few years, but even in the first season he gets so much more to work with, and he does a fantastic job. Richard Dean Anderson (tv's original MacGyver) replaces Kurt Russell, it's a more sarcastic take on the character, but he always brings it in the dramatic stuff when it counts. I prefer him to be honest. Just of a wasted potential of a character. Hope you enjoy the show!
I always enjoyed the film but the SG1 series is my favorite sci-fi series. The series took the possibilities the Stargate put in your head from the film and ran with it.
i would absolutely love to watch you guys react to the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis tv shows and Stargate movies for sure 😁 Stargate is my favourite franchise
I'm about 30 years older than you fellows so my childhood movies that I can watch over and over again include "Jaws" and "The Omen ."
Between Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Gate and Star Search, Star Gate is easily my third favorite.
Yes, please watch Stargate SG-1! At least try out the first season.
I don't normally comment but there aren't many reactors looking into this show and for me it's such a fun watch. It gives off a "sci-fi Indiana Jones" feel (fun adventure sci-fi - a little bit of lore/mythology/history and science with some action).
Maybe, if you like it but still feel it maybe too much of a big commitment for the entire series on the channel, you could from time to time put out season by season recap reaction videos. Though, obviously, I would love for you guys to watch the full series on the channel.
15:00 The weird "cow hippo horse" isn't two guys in a costume - it's a horse in a costume :p
Also I agree with the guy on the left - the fire is magic, to these people. Yes they know what fire is, but they can't "click their fingers and make fire". They have to rub sticks together.
The same gag is used in Hocus Pocus - the witches (from the 16th century) are taken aback by a teenager with a lighter - and think he is a wizard. They have to do incantations to make fire. he can just "do it".
One of my favorite Kurt Russell films is the science fiction movie, "Soldier."
This is one of my favorite and probably most nostalgic Sci-Fi movies, def from the 90s. I loved the mixed in concepts of Egyptian ties to alien history with earth.
When I finally saw this it immediately made me think of Disney’s Atlantis. 😂 I think Disney took some liberties there. Milo is reminiscent of James Spader’s character, trying to convince ppl about the ancient thing. The military guy, the team, the secret mission, and even he stays with the girl at the end! And the “A” in Atlantis is even similar looking to the Stargate. Just amusing to see the similarities.
I would personally put the Stargate universe in the same realm as Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, and Andromeda. These are all solid shows but fall just under Star Wars and Star Trek. I would also put Firefly/Serenity in the same bracket with Stargate. The late 90s/early 2000s was a sort of golden era for science fiction content. As a kid in the 2000s I fell in love with Farscape and Andromeda in particular.
The similarities of Stargate and Disney's Atlantis is incredible. If you watch them back to back you'll be surprised.
Plot twist! The Stargate released the monsters from The Mist. A tenticle comes through and wraps around his neck.
I would 100% love it if you guys watched the show! I have loved this movie most of my life but the show is really where it gets good, and you really get to know the characters. I think you'd enjoy it, even if you don't do reactions for it
@8:00 Youre absolutely right. In an early episode of SG1 they close the gate on the back of someone's head to kill them.
I think Halo actually got a lot of its inspiration from Stargate. I always liked how all the aliens were named after ancient Gods. You got the Egyptian, Hellenistic, Norse and Middle Eastern gods as characters. You think Thor is a bit of an idiot in the Marvel Universe. Wait till you see Thor in this. At the end of the series, Ba'al is a brilliant antagonist(with some Farscape crossover) Loads of in jokes in the series with a parody episode.
Saw this in the cinema when I was 16 and the SFX we're mind blowing for it's time.
1:50 I was absolutely obsessed with this movie at the time…and of course, with the series later on! I geeked out big time 😂!!
Speaking of Thanos, this movie has Ego and Ultron working together
I would absolutely love! you guys to watch SG-1. Unfortunately, the shows first season, like most show’s first seasons, isn’t the best that they’ve done. But as a whole it’s a great watch!
my guilty pleasure was always "The Last Starfighter"...some corn but good
20:09 Right side. The person that bites the dust. 😂
I’d love to rewatch the show with you
Tom, have you ever said "For god's sake Sean, just watch the movie! It answers all your questions!!" Or do you say it all the time, and just edit it out...? 😛
I suggest you watch the original Battlestar Galactica. The originally planned episodes are good, but then they decided to make it into a tv series and put in a lot of filler episodes. I wish I could tell you specifically which episodes to watch, but if you watch the whole series, you can probably tell which were the original planned episodes and which episodes were quickly put together to make it into a weekly tv series. It's not a really big time commitment as there was only 1 season.
You should probably watch "Universal Soldier" also by the Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich team... (They also did Independence Day and Godzilla 1998)
"They have these weird parasite-like worms in them"
AKA 'Junior'
Yes, this was intended to be a film series. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich had plans for a trilogy, but studio politics killed the sequels, and MGM opted for the show instead. Devlin has stated that the Stargate 2 would've focused on Mayan culture, and Part 3 would've done something to "tie every mystery we've ever had together." Pretty vague but that's what he said. It's possible the sequels would've developed the characters further, but I doubt we'll know. I don't even know if Jackson and O'Neil would've been in it. I'd like to think they would've been, though. It helps to follow familiar faces in epic adventures like these.
Thanks, Shaun! Thanks, Tom! 🌌 #CinemaRules #Stargate #RolandEmmerich #Stargate1994
this is pure Stargate Bait /// SG1 Season 1 Reacts will be a blast
The tv show is top tier. Action, comedy, etc
The series is great. The story is good and builds from season to season.
Oh please oh please give the tv show a try! I completely agree that it's a long slog but even if it was done by watching two EPs a video or something like that, I'd be watching each upload for sure. I'd preface that season 1 does suffer from age in terms of when it was produced, but the stories still hold up imo
Do you really expect the United States government to allow that “book” to be published? Top Secret confidentiality, son!
Yeah at least do season one.
The filmmakers originally wanted to do a trilogy but the studio wanted to make the tv show, so that blew away the hopes for the sequels.
This was a fun film. My favourite childhood film is Alien. My parents didn't realise I was watching it and scaring the shit out of myself. I really hope you do FLash Gordon 1980 sometime.
SG1 is great, although the first couple of seasons haven't aged particularly well - a fair bit of cheesy stuff and weak filler episodes, but the world expansion is there and a lot of fun, the characters and actors are great, there's a LOT of humour and it's generally just a fun ride. Recommend, but manage your expectations. 😊
Yes, they even made fun of that in later episodes when they recreate SG 1 into a tv series Wormhole X-treme!
I love both the shows and the movie, i saw Stargate in the movie theaters with my parents when I was 11. It was awesome.
If you ever watch the TV show, you need to prepare yourself, the first season was hit and miss and low budget because they were not sure if it was going to be successful or not.
I love the show, a real fanboy... and even I have a hard time with season 1, but it does have a few diamonds. Season 2 is better but still getting its legs... season 3 and beyond it finds itself and and it really becomes a #1 sci fi show.... so keep that in mind the first two season have great episodes but it's a little cheesy and you have to grudge through here and there. But after that it becomes a master sci fi. Great writing and some very good episodes. Even made for tv movies/ premiere extended specials and all sorts of fun.
I am New to your channel but I'm loving what I'm seeing.
As for movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of is robocop 1987, and the fith element, and total recall.
Lol. "And then you have Stargate...the inbred offspring of Star Wars and Star Trek." That's not a bad description. This movie made dark eye shadow look terrifying. So there's that.
The series re-cast the Jack and Daniel. Richard Dean Anderson made Jack his own, he said he could not play Kurt Russel's Jack O'Neill. Michael Shanks makes a good James Spader replacement. They changed a few minor details, but mostly those are improvements or necessary to make it a series.
I grew up with this movie, and it always is a nice comfort food type of movie.
Stargate is simple...
Nerds love sci-fi (which i am one) and we love Star Wars/Star Trek.
What this movie does is take it from a galaxy far far away and some
research vessel in the future on an expedition and chooses to ground
the sci-fi aspect in something almost believable with Egyptian gods/lore.
We want to believe this was possible so we dream it could be.
Love the film and everything they tried to do later on TV, A+++
NB My favorite series(since i was small, did everything to see it, even waited 3 hours to download it in the 90's to see a pixelated episode of 60mb per 45min episode) that thrusted me to programming and tech.
You're right about Stargate being the overlap of Star Wars and Star Trek, but that's precisely why I like it better than the other two. It is, however, best at a total immersion level. I do recommend this rabbit hole, though.
The Stargate film is a rocky start to the franchise, but the series gets more interesting and in-depth and dynamic and fleshed out and just basically "more". SG-1 season 1 is a really good place to start, lots of establishing and memorable episodes, and some…others. Overall, a great way to decide if you want to continue. Oh, but you'll actually have to continue, as nearly every season finale is a cliffhanger into the next season's premiere and this season is no exception.
Still and will always love this movie. This and The Mummy are why I am becoming an archaeologist.
Speaking of pyramids, check out the liquification of stone using a plant based acid that keeps with all of the requirements of the resultant solid stone etc and its tight fit along with transportation and quickness of build.
The Stargate feature film was great at one thing; the potential of the stargate and the worlds to be explored.
Thankfully, someone saw that and Stargate SG-1 was born and it as in my opinion; a far more superior IP than either Star Wars and Star Trek. Especially now, Disney is completely cucked Star Wars and Star Trek is now just a corpse.
Stargate SG-1 is an amazing series and It's world building and lore is massively more fun to unpack as the series went on. The characters are great, the tone is easy to get into and the effects do hold up reasonably well. The follow up, Atlantis was ok but had a hard time finding its footing and the main nemesis were... mid. Universe was trying to hard to be BSG replacement... it should have brought back the fun of SG-1.
Anyway, I enjoy your reactions. Cheers! 😎👍
You see...at the Geezer Platter, Amen-Shauntep (known as Bob the Heresay Builder) built his Stair-Gate, which unfortunately is covered in one-liner memes that nobody can figure out or understand. Example: In Fig. 114A, it shows a stick man holding a stick. Just a stick. For no reason. We assume Tomtomkhenamen the Git (high-memer) chose the location of Philaedelphia Street next to the post box & tube for the graffiti island it was located on.
The bomb is to protect Earth and not allow anything other than them to go back. Jack saw that weird looking thing that was squashed before they went through the Stargate.
I always thought Kurt Russell looked like Guile from Street Fighter in this film
Besides the 10 seasons there are 2 motion pictures and 2 spinoffs (Stargate: Atlantis And Stargate: Universe) that are all connected someway
The Soldier with Kurt Russell by Paul Anderson is a decent action/sci-fi cousin to the world of Bladerunner or a least with a lot of Easter eggs to many of Anderson's favorite sci-fi movies. Plus it has Jason Scott Lee!
