    Dogma Movie Description:
    Two fallen angels who were ejected from paradise find themselves banned in Wisconsin. They are now headed for New Jersey where they find a loophole that can get them back into heaven. The only catch is that it will destroy humanity. A group bands together to stop them.
    Dogma is a 1999 American fantasy comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith, who also stars with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, Linda Fiorentino, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Salma Hayek, Bud Cort, Alan Rickman, Alanis Morissette and Jason Mewes. It is the fourth film in Smith's View Askewniverse series. Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson, stars of the first Askewniverse film Clerks, appear in the film, as do Smith regulars Scott Mosier, Dwight Ewell, Walt Flanagan, and Bryan Johnson.
    The story revolves around two fallen angels who plan to employ an alleged loophole in Catholic dogma to return to Heaven after being cast out by God, but as existence is founded on the principle that God is infallible, their success would prove God wrong, thus undoing all creation. The last scion and two prophets are sent by the seraph Metatron to stop them.
    The film's irreverent treatment of Catholicism and the Catholic Church triggered considerable controversy, even before its opening. The Catholic League denounced it as blasphemy. Organized protests delayed its release in many countries and led to at least two death threats against Smith. Despite this, Dogma was well received by critics, and grossed $44 million against its $10 million budget, becoming the highest-grossing film in the View Askewniverse series to date.

    Ben Affleck's monologue in the parking garage is probably my favorite moment in the entire movie, still. No matter how many times I've seen it, it still floors me. This movie is something I reference more than anything when talking religion and such because Rufus is right: it's better to have an idea, you can change an idea; belief is tricky.
    This movie is classic. And kudos to Kevin Smith for allowing it to be online without copyright issue because he doesn't want Weinstein getting money.

That’s how I tour now, because I couldn’t get on a plane for a while, you know. Anyway, Westboro put out a press release saying, “God hates fag enabler Kevin Smith.”
      So I didn’t know what to expect from being on the receiving end of a Phelps protest. When I got to Kansas City, there were like four of them. You see, Westboro Baptist Church has like 20 families, the members come from just 20 families. The four of them are holding signs, mostly about Easter. The bug up their asses that day was the Easter Bunny. God hates the Easter Bunny. A couple of guys who came with me went out and taped them. I didn’t want to engage them, but I sent them out and told these guys to interview them (the protesters).
      The guys came back and said, “Dude, they couldn’t have been nicer. They couldn’t have been more well-spoken. They couldn’t have been more professional. • @wdomburg
      @wdomburg 11 месяцев назад +2

      It is far from accurate. In fact, the central premise of the film is wrong. Indulges cannot remit the eternal consequences of sin; that is, even a plenary indulgence has nothing to do with getting into heaven. At best it would reduce the amount of time you spend in purgatory, but then only if you are free of mortal sin.
      It also uses the term transubstantiation to refer to a contrivance of the script, rather than any real theological concept and utterly ignores trinitarian doctrine by presenting God as an individual person (and one with the limitations of a mere being, at that).
      I suspect that flaws are born of Kevin Smith's own ignorance rather than a deliberate intent to misrepresent Catholic doctrine, but it falls absolutely flat as serious criticism. It is little surprise that many Catholics find it offensive, because frankly, it is. That anyone raised Catholic praises its accuracy is evidence of how poor a job the Church has done with catechism.

    This film made me believe in God for 2 weeks... seriously. I wasn't raised on God or any of that, and the only time is was in a church was weddings and funerals. I never believed or understood it. After the 2 weeks, I went back to not believing... BUT what the film DID teach me was WHY people believe. I finally understood the need to believe in God. Very powerful film. These days I kinda put the God tale (and stories like Superman, Thor, Star Wars or other stories about good and evil) as a fantasy story not only to entertain, but also make of believe in being good, and helping, sharing... and not being mean, or selfish or sadly like some people like Hitler, pure evil. What ever story YOU follow, while just a story, can still teach you. Dogma made me understand.

    My favorite Kevin Smith film. Great cast. Great story...even though I don`t know a lot about religion. There`s some great one liners. You should do ALL of Kevin Smith`s movies. You will find some great laughs and some of his stuff, as crazy as it is, can really make you think and look at yourself internally. Good stuff. Truly.

    I was just 15 when this came out and it blew me away. I have never been religious, but religion facinated me. Especially at that age. I was always reading through it, the inconsistencies and straight up lies. This film was an affirmation of what I thought. I was an atheist then and still am and I would never try and change someone's mind about their mindset, with any religion. But the one line that resonated the most was Rufas saying "I think it's better to have ideas, you can change an idea, changing a belief is trickier. People die for it, people kill for it." There are so many other profound quotes in this silly little movie that had catholics so fucking angry, and I bet about 5% of them actually saw it.

    If this movie came out now… it wouldn’t. It was shelved by 2006. It was widely played on HBO in the early 2000s.
    It’s so hard to find now. My husband knew it was a favorite movie of mine as a raised Episcopalian who decided to go a different way. I was 14 when Dogma was released. I loved the movie. Couldn’t find it anywhere but I once told my husband I found a copy on RUclips and it was great. He wasn’t that happy. A week later he gave me an import copy he’d been waiting on for months. I didn’t feel great but I didn’t know.
