- by request from a subscriber. here is an overview of how I converted our factory 4 speed overdrive trans to a more modern 5 speed overdrive out of a 90's f150.
notes. I forgot to mention but you will need to cut and shorten the linkage from the transfer case shifter to the transfer case but this is as simple as measuring, cutting the linkage and running a quick weld across it. if you don't have a welder then a piece of flat stock and a drill press will quickly make you a replacement
I just found a m5od from a local salvage yard for 150. I also found the cluch and larger hump there too. I am trying retro fit in a 78 f100. From auto to 5 speed.
@@seantinsley1411 awesome. Should be a fun swap
Great explanation
Muncie is the way to go
Just got a 93 do I really need to use clutch everytime when shifting
@@CreedManess if you're good at floating gears then no. Depends on driving skill and transmission condition.
If you don't want to put additional wear on your synchronizers, I would recommend using the clutch.
Do you know if the transmission is the M5OD or the ZF5. Considering swapping my 85 f150
This was the m50d but I have swapped the zf5 into a short bed f150 of the same vintage.
Was the process mostly the same or are there some differences to look out for. I was thinking about the Mazda tranny but I’d rather have a stronger ZF5.
@@gamer-gaming-chair8198 the only issue I ran into with the zf5 was the clearance between it and the forward gas tank on my short bed. The speedometer cable interfered and caused It to flex at an extreme angle. It failed shortly o
After. I routed a new cable differently and it held up fine afterwards. Otherwise the same process. Redrill holes for the cross member, connect the clutch. Out the shifter in and figure out driveshafts.
@@junkinjames6345 thanks, I might swap it one day, but till then it’ll do
