    Bathroom thoughts... a walking shower in the master so you two can gracefully age in place if you choose to stay there long term. A shower and tub combo in the guest room would be great for both kids and aged guests who might visit. As we age, sitting in a tub is a hazard as it gets harder to get up! I've learned from experience.

      Not in a walk in tub!

      Why the river stone floor would be PERFECT for a walk-in-shower.

    • @peikathryn
      @peikathryn 2 года назад +5

      My late mother in law had a walk in tub and she didn't like it because you had to fill it after you got in and had to wait for all the water to drain before she could get out and would be cold by then. I think a seat in the shower, if you have a separate shower, would be the way to go but I'm 70 and I have a surround tub/shower and tend to only take showers because my strength isn't what it used to be. I used to love to have a bath but now I find it too difficult to stand up from the sitting position because I don't have the arm and leg strength and the tub only has one edge and the inside wall is just straight in our new home so I can't get enough of a hand hold on both sides like I used to in our old house. With the claw footed tub like they will have I think that getting up wouldn't be a problem.

      I was about to say the same. Aging goes fast... so it's good to think of these things in the building process, because it will cost you a lot more later on to change things up to be accessible. I'm so happy I made my shower portion separate. I love a tub too, but my husband had MS and eventually we needed a shower he could roll up to and slide over on the bench/chair. I converted a downstairs butlers pantry into a bath with a rectangular shower. I put a block glass shower wall and built the shower floor with a sloped floor to drain down into. I installed the large handicapped handrails around it...which actually looked industrial and looked good as well as functional. The shower had an open doorway on the end but water would not coming out. The open doorway made it very accessible for a wheelchair too.
      Since that bathroom was right off the kitchen, it really got used a lot. People who visited loved using that shower too. Most visitors or people who are still working outside the home will want a shower to use. I love a soaking tub, but that's something I wouldn't use in the morning before I went to work. So I would recommend adding a shower to your guest bathroom. You can easily make it separate from the tub without that much cost. I built and tiled one myself and I'm not a professional contractor. I hired the plumbing like you are doing. I also hired the person who installed the shower block glass wall. It was an all day job since they have to wait for each row to set up. So when thinking about staying in your home forever, think about aging or possible health emergencies that could happen that would prevent you from residing in your home. An accessible bathroom is one of the first issues you will face when that happens. Keep your door openings wide and access to a shower so that you can keep a shower chair in it.

    • @kimpulsipher647
      @kimpulsipher647 2 года назад +5

      Totally agree. It should be a rimless shower so you can get a wheelchair in. Should also have all handicapped width doorways. You are building. Time to think of the future.

    Love MaryCarl and her intelligence about her chickens!! God Bless you Jason, you have the best sense of humour and dance delicately with your words around the two ladies, always saying "I could be wrong". I think you are the best of the best, and must have had a great Dad for a role model, and an ever better Mom to raise you to be the gentleman that you are!!! God Bless you and your lovely family!! May the house build go smoothly with no stress!

    I've had a claw foot tub. We had an extra long one we got from a house that was being demolished. Loved, loved, loved it. My husband's 6'6" and he could stretch out his legs. However, the hoop around the top with a shower curtain hanging from it is a real pain. The curtain blows in with the hot water flowing on you and clings to your legs and body. There's also one thing to think about in the future. You won't always be young and limber. Stepping over the tub's edge gets harder and harder. A shower is walk-in. Just some thoughts. Love y'all's channel. I wait eagerly each time for your vlogs and such to come out. Keep being you!

      I got rid of my tub and put in a stand alone shower. I rarely took a bath and didn’t like the curtain blowing and cold air coming in. And iI don’t have time to lay in a tub with tons of candles burning while drinking a glass of wine. That’s only in the movies. Think long term. Some of the designs aren’t really practical. I have bench in the shower so I can sit down. I wouldn’t change it. Good luck with your decisions!!!

      Hi guys I am so excited for you guys and your house and how everything's going and I want to let you know I'm an elderly lady who's physical abilities have changed and luckily I have a walk-in shower because trying to put my leg over a claw tub would be impossible and so just just thoughts that you might want to think about for the future I know it's not in your bathroom but if you have older gas it may be hard for them to but I love you guys love your videos and take care 💕

    Loved seeing Marycarl , what a wonderful child you have, so smart and polite and cute. And my opinion on your house is: It is your home please don't pick something because you might sell in ten years. If someone doesn't like what you have done they can change it. Your home should be where you feel loved and compfortable and when you look around you say yep this is us and we love it. If you want a claw tub with polka dots on it then that is what you should have LOL One of the reasons I love your video's is because you do things your way and that is how it should be. Keep the video's coming we love seeing all the updates, good and bad. I still love Moody the big puppy and Mildred Mama's girl. Thanks for bringing smiles to my face and knowledge to my brain.

    As a Realtor, every house needs at least one bathtub for children for resale. Whether it is in the master or guest bathroom it just needs one. As far as showers, I would do a gradual sloped walk-in shower (no shower pan at all!) so that you can use a walker, wheelchair, etc. to get a shower as you age. That would have to be planned for because it is part of your concrete slab pour. I know you did not like a tiled shower because of grout lines, but you can get "marblelite" that is a solid slab of acrylic like marble that is so easy to clean but does not scratch like the plastic acrylic panels for the walls. Best wishes as you build!

    Went through this myself years ago! DO NOT nip it in the bud if you have the choice. The alternative, for me, was life threatening and left me with more problems than answers. Treat it naturally and just keep a dry gown at the ready, lol. It may last a while but it WILL end naturally if you give it the chance. Patience is a virtue. (And worth it in this situation, IMHO).

    Brooke, I'm in the same boat with you and the intermittent paramenopause. All cotton sheets are a MUST. No Bamboo, no flannel, no T Shirt sheet, nothing but 100%cotton. I had to get a cotton bed (not poly filled) cover for the top of my memory foam bed topper because heat was trapping. I have a cooling pillow, etc. etc. Good luck to you and if you keep getting hot at night, make sure your sheets are cotton otherwise heat might not be escaping and trapping moisture- why you waking up sweating.

    One good thing about cast-iron it does keep the water hotter longer period with an acrylic tub the water cools down really fast. Just some food for thought.

    You could make your own claw foot surround curtain rod with black pipe... on the subject of showers... I would consider the future as you age...believe me...getting in and out of a tub with higher sides can be difficult if not dangerous...

      I am 74 and just yesterday we had a walk-in shower installed. I had a garden jacuzzi. It had gotten to the point, I could get in, but had to have help getting out. You are young now, but believe me as you get
      Older you will want a shower.

    MaryCarl I love learning about & seeing your beautiful chickens, ducks, & birds! I can't wait to see the little game-Timmy cross! It's very interesting to see them in their growth process, how they change so fast.
    It's amazing how almost every breed of fowl can be born with the ability to walk, eat, & drink after being shown the feeder & waterer.
    Your love for them glows, & they thrive from your gentle care. All are healthy & happy, friendly & calm as can be. :-).

    I think you should put a shower near the back entrance of your house. This way you can do a quick clean up of farm dirt and not track it through the house. You could keep robes in the shower room or outside the room. It could be near your washer and dryer.

    If you are going to do the shower in the claw foot tub, I would suggest that you tile the walls and floor around it and place a drain underneath. Otherwise you have to worry about your subfloor.

    I just love to start my morning with a cup of coffee and listen to your podcast. I would (me, personally) put a shower and tub in the guest bathroom, not for guests but for your daughter and if you sell the house later on. We have one of those annoying low tub inserts (that you really can't soak in unless you are a short child) and we have considered tearing it out and making a double shower or adding a wood shower bench. Though if we had a nice deep tub we might actually use it :) Oh, and have you all seen the Carolina Coops (I think that is the brand name) chicken coops?! they are gorgeous!

Every time MaryCarl is on he tells me, "that little girl knows what she is talking about and we are going to hear more about her one day.". He thinks she is going to be the next Jack Hanna.
