We used moth balls to keep snakes away from the house. But my Maw put them everywhere. We just threw them under the house. Yall bring back so many memories for me. We also put crab apples in the basement to keep the crickets away. To be honest I don't know why but my mom did so I did it. Lol. It works. ☺

I remember the moth ball was used for snakes.
Moths ate cotton wool natural fibre clothes. Today our clothes are synthetics.
We would walk all the way over to the backside of the farm to where an old house had been near the railway line, the 4 older siblings to collect daffodils!!! They had taken over the entire overgrown garden. We'd take home arms full. A very long walk for such wee legs when I think about it. !!!!

My Great-Grandmother had 200 rose plants when she died that she had started from a clipping. My fondest memory was of her going to friend’s homes and pulling her clippers out of her pocket and taking a cutting. She went home and cut a slit up the cutting and put a flaxseed in the slit, placed them in water and in six weeks set them in the ground. Since we lived in Santa Rosa, California Home of Luther Burbank we had lots of roses to choose from. She would go when the grounds keepers were trimming back for the winter and ask for cutting as well.
My grandma did something like that but she always saved one of the best looking flowers when ever grandpa got he flowers, b-day, anniversaries and just because he wanted too. the whole property had a wall of flowers around it when she passed away in 1999. I have also heard that in England back in the 13th century they used a type of rose as a wall between properties and fields to keep cattle and sheep in.
Rose trees are fantastic, you can grow them from a cutting in a potato
I have a rose bush belonging to my gran, from our old house, plus two memory bushes for my cousin and uncle. I have a beautiful blue moon rose. It is a beautiful lilac/purple colour and has a lovely fragrance too.
Daffodils, Tulips, Bluebells, snowdrops, you need crocuses too.
See if you can get the crocuses where you can harvest the saffron stamen from them.
Also freesias they are beautiful and fragrant.
I would of loved to have seen her yard , how blessed you were to have a grandmother like her.

Smells are an incredible reminder of previous experiences. I learned once that the olfactory nerve is near the part of your brain that stores memories. Makes sense to me!

I love yellow daffodils, my absolutely obsessed with them. I also love lilacs, irises. Periwinkle My mother loved red rose's 🌹🌹🌹. Yellow roses are my favorite. You bring back so many memories, I just want to cry. I miss my family and I'm the only one left. I have kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. But I remember momma and daddy. Love all of you, thanks for being here for me. Much love🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️

Cinnamon toast does the same for me. Takes me back to (my mom’s mom) Grandma Cleo’s house. She’s been gone since 1969. I was 10, and even though I’m 63, I still remember. Or, Old Spice makes me think of (my dad’s dad) Grandpa Howard. Stay safe and warm! Prayers and Blessings always
Orange marmalade on toasted bread reminds me of my aunt. So does Constant comment tea.
My dad’s dad was called Daddy Howard by most of the grandchildren, except the “Yankee” ones, of which I was one; my sister and cousin, too, we called him grandpa.
We had 'black' tulips one year and they were STUNNING! Magistically tall, silky in color and texture, and the color...while not exactly 'black' is called that due to being such a dark purple! We moved from that house before the next growing/blooming season, but made sure we advised the new residents about those BEAUTIES! If you have the opportunity, I DO encourage you to invest in a mess of them; you won't regret it! (I hope to see some in your videos some day)! : )

I can only imagine what a wonderful mother Mary Carl is gonna be by the way she cares for her baby birds. She’s such a nurturing, loving soul. You must be so proud of the young lady she’s become. I remember her being so tiny and even then she was so protective with penny.
You spoke of certain smells for me it’s cedar… the smell of cedar takes me back in time to granny’s cedar chifforobes, closets and chests. As kids we would climb in to hide and that smell is one of a kind. Also the sweet smell of honeysuckles on the breeze. So many things in our memories are tied to certain scents… but I think we all have one that takes us back in time
Mary Carl is amazing with her birds. I follow her on IG & she's always posting something & I have to comment because I am so impressed by her knowledge.
Mothballs were needed in the summer because people didn't have air conditioning. Once central a/c became routine, people stopped having moth infestations.
Grab some lavender bouquets, plant some lemon balm and mint in pots you will thank me another time

Roses were my passion.For trimming.The first 5 leaf stem is where to cut.The most fragrant varieties are most high maintenance.I used to have a June bug trap by roses.They are beautiful!!!!

Like you said the old homesteads had daffodils. They never seem to die. One of the other bloggers is resurrecting a old homestead and has been moving all the daffodils to new locations on the property.
Jason your Hydrangeas at the little Cog were gorgeous! I hope you kept some clippings or are able to grow more from smaller plants. They would sell well for sure!

We have a full house generator. A great move for your home. We have power when nobody else had lights for about a week. My sister who lives next door was able to save her freezer and frig by running an extention to our house.
👏👏👏always a delight. We have a whole house Gen X generator with propane. So nice to have this bit of piece of mind. So happy for you.
My granny "Be-bop" didn't have a blade of grass in her backyard. Just Rose's, irises, and daffodils. I have some of her peach irises in my flowerbeds. Along with a wisteria vine I got from hers. I would say going on 40 years now. Memories...

Beautiful! I recall my Ouma having wisteria in the backyard. Her roses were in front & at the back as well. That's going back to the sixties as she passed in 1964. Her daughters carried on the tradition of rose bushes & hydrangeas unfortunately no wisteria though. Me nothing i plant lasts except my lemon tree, which was given to me as a clementine but when it finally fruited (?) turned out to be a Cape lemon, hardy but rough-skinned and juicy.🍋
We have had our generic generator for 10 years, and it’s never failed us. Congrats!
Crocuses regularly emerge in my garden mid February in Michigan. Zone 6B. Daffodils, iris, tulips can all stay in ground through winter. Many are 25 years old. No need to dig and store here. Good luck. Looking forward to see what your hard work accomplishes.

I grew up living next to a farm that was acres of Daffodils and Peonies. The fields still have the daffodils growing and it is beautiful. Thankfully the people who own the property now have kept them that way.

I loved the story about feeding the baby birds. I know Brooke tried so hard to feed them so MaryCarl could go play with her little friend. I'm glad MaryCarl took her birds with her because I know Brooke would have been so stressed out feeding those babies and worrying that something would happen to them. I would have been so scared if it was me having to feed them. Don''t feel bad Brook because MaryCarl just has that special knack with her birds that is way beyond most of us! 🥰🥰🥰

It is all of us fans praying for you all! We got infected at a drug store I work at for two years! We do not wear wool is why we do not need mothballs! I use them to keep mice and snakes out of my shed! We have daffodils in almost every house, I love them! You separate them in the fall! You can put bulbs in the refrigerator.
My sister and I, while decorating for Christmas out in the front yard, her hydrangeas had dried with the heads on them so we took red spray paint and sprayed the heads, it looked wonderful. Infact they are still there.
I enjoy how you plan things out. 1. Protect the bulbs 2. Find the best place eventually.

Daffodils reminds me of my grandma. She was born in Scotland and always talked about walking the moors in fields of Heather and Daffodils. Every spring I buy bouquets of Daffodils in her memory.
I've seen steel rooms set in garages, bedroom closets etc for safe rooms for years! I have a friend who has a gener-x (sp?)generator. They wouldn't be without it.
If people would really watch their animals, they will let you know when bad weather is coming!!
Generac is the spelling of the brand of generator. 🙂 And yep, I pay attention to the animals around us, ranches, etc., the cattle, where they're standing, where they lay down, etc.
Oh goodness your bird feeding story, I laughed and laughed and laughed. You're my favorite family. When Mary Carl writes her bird books, I hope she includes your story verbatim in her book. It would also make a great selling children's story book with her drawn pictures. Titled Free the Birds.

I grew Dahlia bulbs as very young girl and every year I would dig up the bulbs up and dry them before storing them for winter in my clothes closet..lol.. Then the following late spring or early summer I planted them again..I'm from Newfoundland and they grew every year cause I got manure, sawdust and black soil around the area I lived. No one helped me just me doing.
I remember my Grandma had mothballs in her attic that she didn't want us to ever go into when we were children but when you open that door you could smell mothballs to me it was gross but I could never smell them downstairs good memories Good Times bring back a lot of thoughts God bless you guys I love you good luck on everything you do

Jimmy Houston, the famous fisherman and he has his own videos from his great place, has a big outdoor tornado shelter built of steel inside one of his buildings there at his home. He showed us all inside of it and it was pretty neat. It is probably what you are having built.
There were woollen clothes in the past that you would have needed to protect from moths. Nowadays the majority of clothes are a synthetic mix! xxx I also want to say that I never dreamt that anyone would think that Marycarl would have been allowed to go on the future pond if you weren't sure she was safe! You are wonderful caring parents! xxx

Here in Eastern Ontario, Canada when you drive around in the spring you will see lilacs in the middle of nowhere. Year's ago the people that settled these areas planted lilacs on either side of their front doors. The houses might be long gone but the lilacs remain. Daffodils are not affected by deer, like tulips are. Every Spring here in Ottawa we have a Tulip Festival. Every year we get tulip bulbs from Holland for protecting Queen Juliana and her children during WWII. In fact Princess Margreit was born in Ottawa.

Yes daffodils are absolutely beautiful and it’s so true old home places always have them I grew up in rural KY and they were everywhere. As kids we would pick them and use food coloring in the water and it would color the tips of the daffodils awesome memories. Thanks for taking me back in time for a bit💜💙♥️💛

I love roses too. When I took Microsoft Office one time I had to do a PowerPoint presentation and I chose to do my report on growing roses. I was surprised how interested my classmates were in my report.
I lived a mile away from an Entennamen's baked goods factory (down wind!) years ago and every night at midnight they made cinnamon buns!! Just the smell of regular cinnamon brings back those memories! Bulbs need a cold season to regenerate for the next years growth. If you have deer or rabbits, just know they eat all the bulb flowers except daffodils!! Squirrels will eat bulb flowers, too except daffodils!! Just don't cut the leaves down when the flowers die off because they create the life in the bulbs for next year's flowers to grow up! The leaves will brown naturally. If you want a spectacular flower from a bulb, look into FRITTALARIA BULBS!! You won't be disappointed!! God Bless!
There was a time in history when the tulip bulbs were a huge market prices went sky high and then the market collapsed. Tulips have to be dug up and rested over the summer in a cool place. And planted again in the fall.
For your plants you want to permanently mark, consider aluminum flashing, a pair of tin snips, and an engraver. Cut the tin and mark it. It's cheap and permanent.

I love daffodil's, tulips, hyacinth's, and I truly love Irises. Yet when I go to a garden center I love them all. If I could have flowers all year round I would always have a smile in my heart.
I can not wait to see the fruit orchard, the construction updates, the aviary updates and the new popped up flowers and just all the wonderful updates on the new 40. It is such a joy.

We have a Generac system. It is the greatest thing since sliced bread. My husband has been on Oxygen for 7 years because of Emphysema, and if we lost power, we lost everything. We had oxygen tanks, but they only lasted for a certain amount of time. If trees went down on our driveway, and they did, no one could get through until they were removed. We are on a well, so we lost that, the house was run by electricity, so if it went everything went. When that system went in, it was like a rock was lifted from my chest. We did have to wait for a few months, and that was before Covid. It was WELL worth it.

When my parents were married in January of 1955, my mom carried daffodils. She loved them. To this day when they are up I always remember my mom.
When my daddy was a boy (1920s) they had a tornado and found one oh there cows with a post through her and she was still alive and eating. She didnt act like anything was wrong .

Jason you might like the rose ( Sterling Silver) its lavender in color and smells amazing. You plant bulbs in fall for blooms in spring . Woody bulbs (irises etc will winter over . Soft bulbs (Canna lilies etc need dug and stored or mulched over winter .

if you get new bulbs you can put them in the freezer for 2 weeks and you stand a good chance of getting some flowers. Don't cut em in the first year even after the bloom dies off. they will divide and then next year you will have 2x to 3x more blooms. I grow a bunch of different dafs around my small lot. my favorites are Altruist Daffodil.

When the tornados hit April 27, 2011, we lost power around the areas that were hit for days up to a week. The hospitals were on emergency power for a few days and some pharmacies had generators. People had to drive out of the area to get gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. Some people drove to TN to stay in hotels.
If you want more information look up Universities studying tornado survival. They shoot 2x4's out of small cannons at brick walls, cement blocks walls, and wood walls. Then they test it on the new shelters at the power of the F1-5 tornadoes to see which shelters are safe. Texas and Oklahoma test them.

It is nice to have that comfort knowing if the power goes off you will have power. The other benefit will being able to help your neighbors if they need it. When our power went out we were able to help our neighbor as we had a motorhome in our driveway and had propane for heat and warming up food. Unfortunately it was in the winter so we had to go into the house to use the bathroom. My husband even figured out to plug in the electric water heater from the house so I could take a warm bath. It would have been so nice to be able to stay in the house.
A good climbing rose is 7 sisters. It a mountain rose.
Back in the horse and buggy days an elderly couple planted Daffodils on the bank on the side of the road, 32 miles , this was in the late 40's -50's they still come up today.
I love the old fashioned irises that grow at old home sites. I have gotten bulbs from those places in the past. They are so hardy and simply beautiful.

I use moth balls every spring and summer around the outside of my house. I can smell lilacs and it takes me right back to my Ma Meffords yard and all of her lilac bushes one of my most favorite scents in the world. My childhood all wrapped up in a beautiful smell. 🌹🌷💐🌺🌸🌼🌻

Roses are my absolute favorite flower outside. And so thankful I have had such success with them, about 30 of them on my city yard, minis, climbing, and tea roses. Have fun with them, I found planting them 2-3” below surface keeps them coming back every year, pruning them late spring after they have already starting to leaf out really well

Growing up my mom had a rose garden across the bottom of our yard. She must have had 40 - 50 rose bushes. She also had climbing roses across the back of our house. They were beautiful but I personally don't like roses. I never had a green thumb as a kid, I think it was because I was allowed to mow the lawn but wasn't allowed to do anything in the flower gardens. I thought I hated gardening, however, over the past 30 years (that's how long I've lived in my present house) I now have a flower garden under our tree (circle - approx. 20 feet in diameter). I also have raised veggie/flower gardens and supply my family, my sister's family and the neighbourhood with veggies! I LOVE gardening and have learned so much from you, Jason and Mary Carl so thank you so much!!!

The old shrub roses and climbers are wonderful. They are tough and reliable. Many only flower once. I had a China Rose that I still miss. It flowered all year round. Only one or two flowers at a time in winter but that little bush was a delight. Feed your bulbs after flowering and let them be until the foliage has died down then dig them up and replant them.
