Not sure about the specific order of these, but here are a few of mine- Suffocation's Effigy of the Forgotten wrote the book on technical death metal and slam metal. This album's almost 30 years old and still has some of the most brutally heavy breakdowns and most impressive riffs of any album ever released. The production is perfect too, it's just clean enough to still hold up well today, but not too clean that it loses its heaviness. I think EVERYONE who calls themselves a metal fan, regardless of what bands/subgenres they prefer, needs to listen to this from front to back at least once in their life. Tool's Lateralus, one of the most important albums of this generation. Aenima has some stronger individual songs on it, but I like Lateralus more as an album because the pacing is more consistent from start to finish. Tool was one of the most important bands of the late 90's / early 2000's. In a time when the mainstream rock/metal landscape was oversaturated with hundreds of cheesy post-grunge alt bands and cringy nu-metal and rap metal bands, Tool almost single-handedly kept prog metal alive and managed to somehow become commercially successful at the same time. Behemoth's Demigod, perfectly blends black and death metal more effectively than any band has done before or since. Their 90's black metal albums have a big underground cult following, and their 2010's death metal work is by far their most commercially successful, but personally I like their 5 blackened death metal albums from the 2000's the best. The middle one, Demigod, being the best of the bunch in my opinion. The production is top-notch. Nergal's vocals sound like satan himself, the riffs are somehow simple and technical at the same time, and the drums and bass are absolutely relentless. Every song flows into the next as if the whole album is just one piece. This is another must-listen for anyone interested in something more extreme than they're used to. Mastodon's Blood Mountain is another example of an album that's a perfect blend between a band's old style and new style. Most people tend to prefer either Leviathan or Crack the Skye, but for me THIS is the quintessential Mastodon album. It keeps the raw heaviness of Remission and Leviathan, while also introducing more atmospheric proggy elements that they would expand on further with CTS and The Hunter. This is always the mastodon album I recommend to people who have never listened to them before, it's like the band's "greatest hits" in a lot of ways. If they don't like at least a couple tracks from this, then they won't like any of the band's other records either. Sleeping giant and this mortal soil are two of the best songs ever written Venom's debut album from 1981, welcome to hell, is another extremely influential record that gets overlooked very often because it doesn't get radio airplay like Slayer and Metallica. This album pretty much single-handedly invented thrash metal, death metal, and black metal all at once. It was labelled as "speed metal" and "heavy metal" and lumped in with bands like motorhead and judas priest when it came out, because people just didn't know what to call this style of music back then. Venom and Celtic Frost are two of the most "ahead-of-their-time" bands I can think of. They were YEARS ahead of the curve in metal evolution. Some aspects of Venom's sound weren't fully explored until the early 90's, like a decade after this album came out.

I agree with most of this, my personal favorite album is probably filosofem or a de mysteriis but im just a black metal guy and I cant say objectively that theyre the best metal albums. Anyways great list and you have great taste.

I couldn't imagine picking a top 50 of all metal, much less only having one album per band. Impossible! What I do know for certain, however, is that Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower is my #1. Such a perfect album. Another perfect album, Dirt by Alice In Chains would be pretty high on my list. Frost was my first Enslaved album also, I still love it, as I do all of their albums. I go between Frost, Mardraum, and E as my favorite of theirs.

My all-time favorite is Aenema and probably Nine Inch Nails "The Downward Spiral". I would have to sit long and hard for like a top 50 but if I had to put one, I would have to put Earth "Angel of Darkness/Demon of Light". I know it's 2 but it is the same theme and concept so I'm considering it a 2 disk album. I've been listening to that album so much since my 2019 deployment. My most played song on Spotify of 2020 is "Old Black" from Earth.

Hell yeah! Never hear anyone talk about Ancestors. I actually prefer Of Sound Mind a little more, but all their stuff is great. Love The Maniacal Veil as well. I love hearing "catchy" and "despair-fueled" to describe the same album lol. Les Descrets is great. The reason I can't get into Forest Seasons as much is because he didn't use Kai to record the drums. They are all Programmed. Kinda disappointing. The first album is by far the best. Cradle are great. One of my first extreme bands as well. Anthems is the greatest black metal album ever. My first tattoo is an Opeth tattoo. Agalloch has some mystical quality that is just wonderful. Aenima is my fav too. Speaking of Drudkh, Blood in Our Wells would easily make my top 50. Love the Jester Race, but Kalmah's Swampsong is the best melodeath album. Still Life is also my favorite album of all time. Has been for 17 years.

Not sure about the specific order of these, but here are a few of mine-
Suffocation's Effigy of the Forgotten wrote the book on technical death metal and slam metal. This album's almost 30 years old and still has some of the most brutally heavy breakdowns and most impressive riffs of any album ever released. The production is perfect too, it's just clean enough to still hold up well today, but not too clean that it loses its heaviness. I think EVERYONE who calls themselves a metal fan, regardless of what bands/subgenres they prefer, needs to listen to this from front to back at least once in their life.
Tool's Lateralus, one of the most important albums of this generation. Aenima has some stronger individual songs on it, but I like Lateralus more as an album because the pacing is more consistent from start to finish. Tool was one of the most important bands of the late 90's / early 2000's. In a time when the mainstream rock/metal landscape was oversaturated with hundreds of cheesy post-grunge alt bands and cringy nu-metal and rap metal bands, Tool almost single-handedly kept prog metal alive and managed to somehow become commercially successful at the same time.
Behemoth's Demigod, perfectly blends black and death metal more effectively than any band has done before or since. Their 90's black metal albums have a big underground cult following, and their 2010's death metal work is by far their most commercially successful, but personally I like their 5 blackened death metal albums from the 2000's the best. The middle one, Demigod, being the best of the bunch in my opinion. The production is top-notch. Nergal's vocals sound like satan himself, the riffs are somehow simple and technical at the same time, and the drums and bass are absolutely relentless. Every song flows into the next as if the whole album is just one piece. This is another must-listen for anyone interested in something more extreme than they're used to.
Mastodon's Blood Mountain is another example of an album that's a perfect blend between a band's old style and new style. Most people tend to prefer either Leviathan or Crack the Skye, but for me THIS is the quintessential Mastodon album. It keeps the raw heaviness of Remission and Leviathan, while also introducing more atmospheric proggy elements that they would expand on further with CTS and The Hunter. This is always the mastodon album I recommend to people who have never listened to them before, it's like the band's "greatest hits" in a lot of ways. If they don't like at least a couple tracks from this, then they won't like any of the band's other records either. Sleeping giant and this mortal soil are two of the best songs ever written
Venom's debut album from 1981, welcome to hell, is another extremely influential record that gets overlooked very often because it doesn't get radio airplay like Slayer and Metallica. This album pretty much single-handedly invented thrash metal, death metal, and black metal all at once. It was labelled as "speed metal" and "heavy metal" and lumped in with bands like motorhead and judas priest when it came out, because people just didn't know what to call this style of music back then. Venom and Celtic Frost are two of the most "ahead-of-their-time" bands I can think of. They were YEARS ahead of the curve in metal evolution. Some aspects of Venom's sound weren't fully explored until the early 90's, like a decade after this album came out.

And now I discovered that you love In Flames early stuff like me, (they were my favourite band for years when I was younger) , and then you discovered Opeth, which went and became nr 1, also like me. I couldn't imagine picking a top 50 of all metal, much less only having one album per band. Impossible! What I do know for certain, however, is that Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower is my #1. Such a perfect album. Another perfect album, Dirt by Alice In Chains would be pretty high on my list.
Frost was my first Enslaved album also, I still love it, as I do all of their albums. I go between Frost, Mardraum, and E as my favorite of theirs.

My all-time favorite is Aenema and probably Nine Inch Nails "The Downward Spiral". I would have to sit long and hard for like a top 50 but if I had to put one, I would have to put Earth "Angel of Darkness/Demon of Light". I know it's 2 but it is the same theme and concept so I'm considering it a 2 disk album. I've been listening to that album so much since my 2019 deployment. My most played song on Spotify of 2020 is "Old Black" from Earth.

No industrial metal at all? It was one of the few good things that happened to the matal music in 90es. Demanufacture by Fear factory, or Streetcleaner by Godflesh?
Hell yeah! Never hear anyone talk about Ancestors. I actually prefer Of Sound Mind a little more, but all their stuff is great. Love The Maniacal Veil as well. I love hearing "catchy" and "despair-fueled" to describe the same album lol. Les Descrets is great. The reason I can't get into Forest Seasons as much is because he didn't use Kai to record the drums. They are all Programmed. Kinda disappointing. The first album is by far the best. Cradle are great. One of my first extreme bands as well. Anthems is the greatest black metal album ever. My first tattoo is an Opeth tattoo. Agalloch has some mystical quality that is just wonderful. Aenima is my fav too. Speaking of Drudkh, Blood in Our Wells would easily make my top 50. Love the Jester Race, but Kalmah's Swampsong is the best melodeath album. Still Life is also my favorite album of all time. Has been for 17 years.
