My favourite genre is black metal? My favourite band is Opeth? I love Funeral Doom? I wouldn't be surprised if this guy is the reason why! 😆

I also love funeral doom when I'm in the mood for it. Mirror Reaper is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed

I'm not too big into straight ahead Black Metal but I am a fan of anything viking related. I was happy when you picked Bathory Blood Fire Death and Enslaved. I'll search out the other ones you described as pagan or symphonic cause they are styles I like.
I’d recommend drudkh, nokturnal mortum especially voice of steel and verity albums, Moonsorrow and windir for more pagan style

The White Ward album this year (or technically last year now) was fire.

I don't understand how Meecyful Fate is black metal, even 1st wave. It sounds like straight up Heavy Metal to me.

I appreciate the *influence* Venom, Slayer, and Merciful Fate had on what we know as 'black metal' these days, but I feel the true beginning of what we now call "black metal" is Bathory's "The Return" in 1985. It had the sound, murkiness, and aesthetic. But shit man, its your list, and I don't *really* disagree with any of your picks!

Under The Sign is when black metal got refined. And BFD is Bathory's most underrated *thrash* album. You take away the title track and A Fine Day to Die, and it's an absolute banger of a thrash record!
That is one awesome list. I’m indeed glad to see Satanic Warmaster in here. Carelian Satanist Madness is one of the greatest albums ever made. Absolutely essential classic. There’s also a lot of other awesome picks like Darkthrone Bathory Nokturnal Mortum Blasphemy and many more. Cheers

I'm a Black Metal noob, so I don't have one for each year. And there are some years with only one album I know 🙂
Listened to Blood, Fire Death for the first time yesterday. So it made the list. Love it. Like early Slayer writing a Soundtrack for Lord of the Rings.
That's why for me the most difficult year was 2021. Aquilus, Can Bardd, Mare Cognitum, Spectral Lore, Thy Catafalque, 1914 could all have made the top spot.
2010 was also hard with Alcest, Les Discrets and Deathspell Omega

I am not huge into black metal. However, Caladan Brood's Echoes of Battle from 2013, Untamed Land's Between the Winds from 2018 and Ulver's Bergtatt from 1995 are among my all time favorites. I guess the more folky stuff sticks with me.

For me the best album from 1997 is the one with green cover art by a popular Norwegian symphonic black metal band... which obviously is Enthrone Darkness Triumphant by Dimmu Borgir. But Anthems is great as well.
