When Tom is speaking about what he loves about Summer, he only mentions superficial qualities, such as her eyes and hair, and nothing about her actual personality. Proof that he doesn't see her for who she really is, but as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

I remember watching this as a teenager and siding with Tom, and I think a big part of maturing is when you understand how flawed BOTH of them are and that Tom's behavior is not okay. Also like, the fact he never really listened to her and instead focused only on facets of her that made him feel better about himself. Even right down to him punching the guy in the bar--he didn't react really until the guy started to question why Summer would be with him.

"He knows almost immediately she's who he's been searching for." Is such a dead giveaway of what Tom character is like. Summer is pretty, and he decides she is the love of his life based on it. Then she shows one characteristic he likes (liking The Smiths) and he takes it as THE ONLY CONFIRMATION NEEDED that she is the one. Then we get the karaoke scene, where Summer makes her thoughts on relationships crystal clear, and Tom gets very defensive (Summer is a bit dismisive about people who believe in love, but let's be real, Tom is defensive because SHE is the one saying it). From that point on, you can tell he immediately goes "I can fix her". This is one of my favorite movies that deconstruct the Manic Pixie Dream girl archetype, along with Ruby Sparks. Summer IS NOT a MPDG, but Tom SEES her as such. To Tom, Summer appeared in his life to complete him and make him have fun and do "quirky" things. And since he's such an unreliable narrator, we as the audience can fall into that assumption as well. But Summer gets angry, sad, she can be selfish, and she has a whole life we know almost nothing about but we do get TINY glimpses of. She is a complex person, we just don't really get to see her as such because Tom is too busy considering her his soulmate to notice anything but superficial things about her.

I've actually read the original screenplay for this movie, and in the karaoke scene, Tom goes on about how if you're with the right person, your feelings wouldn't change the next day. You'd just know.
And at the end, on the bench, Summer tells him he was right. Every day she spends with her husband, her feelings never changed.

I watched this when it first came out in theaters and I am embarrassed to admit that I was one of those people who defended Tom but then Joseph mentioned in an interview that Tom was actually the "bad guy", or so to speak and rewatching it as I've gotten older, I realized just how toxic his mindset actually is. Also, the Expectations vs. Reality is one of my all time favorite movie moments because of how painfully relatable it is. I would also not be opposed for longer post analysis. They are both normal people with flaws who aren't meant for each other. There's been this wave of hate and blame directed at Tom with most people villainizing him, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt himself. But it's like people completely ignored all of Summer's actions in the film that prove she is neither innocent nor a victim:
    1. She knew Tom's romantic belief in love from the get go (same convo when she says she doesn't believe in it).
    2. She flirted with him first and initiated the kiss/"relationship.
    3. After they got back from the bar where Tom got punched, they had a fight because Summer says they're just friends, but Tom passionately disagrees and states that they are more than friends. He leaves immediately after, but we see that Summer goes to his place in the middle of that same night and the two hug and kiss, etc. without communicating at all about what happened and what their expectations are now. There's no mention of that fight again. This moment is critical because I actually have a theory that it's at this point that Summer does try to be in a romantic relationship with Tom that's more than friends. Although we don't see her POV to confirm this, it makes her crying at the movie theatre and her breaking up with him essentially make sense. However, even if that is Not the case, and it was only a situationship to her even by this point, she still knowingly leads him on. It was a selfish move to keep Tom around for the sake of her wants. Everyone complains that Tom was being selfish for idealizing Summer - which is true - but she was being just as selfish to lead him on especially knowing that he wanted something serious from her.
    4. Summer is careless with Tom's feelings throughout the movie tbh. She says that Tom is her best friend and wants to stay friends with him. She greets him with excitement and fondness when they run into each other after the "break-up." She even initiates the dance with him because "she wanted to." She invites him to her party and refrains from telling him she's engaged. She actually never tells him, because we see that Tom only found out when he saw Summer with the guy and noticed the ring on her finger. If you're close with someone and consider them a friend, surely you'd at least have the empathy to let them down gently. She does what she wants even if it will hurt the other person. Now should Tom have been more careful about his feelings? Absolutely. They may not owe each other anything, but I think it's still a gray area. It's like breaking up with someone over post-it. At least have the decency to treat the other person with respect. If you've been in a romantic relationship with someone, considered them your best friend then broke things off with them (even if it's not serious and was a situationship) and saw how hurt they were after that, why would you lead them on again? They talked the whole train ride and then had the whole night of the wedding to catch up, yet she never - not once - mentioned her recent engagement.
Tom is not without his faults as well, but most video essays and comments out there already point those out so I won't here. It's sad to see that he is crucified for idealizing someone though because I think it's common among everyone. Many people idolize celebrities so it's not only a romantic thing. With that said, Tom causes his own pain out of a romantic hopelessness and naivety. But that doesn't make him a bad guy. That makes him human. Just like Summer with her own set of faults. They didn't belong together and that's okay. They were also still young and navigating their lives at the time. That's life. I just wish people would criticize both characters equally and with empathy.

I love that you brought up how Summer is her own person and not just there to be Tom's love interest and had her own thoughts, desires, and feelings Tom just ignores in his pov because it is actually exactly why she's NOT a manic pixie dream girl and that term is kind of misused to describe her just because she's framed as being "quirky". "Manic pixie dream girls" were supposed to just describe female characters with no substance or agency besides to show up and improve the male lead's life through being weird and unpredictable, but it's really not the case for Summer since she has a whole life and character arc outside of Tom. I also always thought her comment "Some people like it" was interesting bc it could be a response for both the "basic" taste Tom criticizes but also her unconventional tastes too.

I love this movie. I'm always a little defensive when someone describes Summer as a manic pixie dream girl, cause the whole point if the movie is that they don't exist. Tom wanted a MPDG because he wasn't yet mature enough to understand that they aren't realistic. Summer is quirky and fun, like a MPDG, but unlike them she has faults and is still growing as a person. This is the anti manic pixie dream girl movie.

I watched this movie as a teenage boy & I really appreciated this movie coming out at the time it did because I saw so much of myself in Tom. It really helped me to understand that just because I have feelings or think I have feelings doesn’t mean it’ll work if the person doesn’t feel the same. And it doesn’t make them the bad guy either. Like Tom the second I had my eyes on a girl I was convinced she was my soulmate and we had to be together. It made me pissed the way Summer didn’t reciprocate the feelings. But her last lines really stuck with me. Although she didn’t handle the whole friends with benefits situationship the right way, you really can’t blame her for not loving Tom. Especially when he himself didn’t love her, he just loved the idea of her.

I think if I had watched this as a teen, especially after the break up with my ex, I might have been on Tom's side. I already had bad "relationships" before my ex but this was the first real serious relationship I had. Which, under the delusions of romance books/movies/shows, I thought I found the one. But we were in a long distance relationship and it turned out there were things we just didn't agree on but I took it as that I was the only one willing to put in work for a relationship that would not have worked out no matter what and so became really jaded and cynical after the breakup. To the point I felt like I would never date again. Randomly, 3 years after the break up and I'd gotten over being so hateful about dating, my ex contacted me to apologize for his side of what happened, I apologized for mine, and we're now friends again.

He got goofed on a lot for that, as he already had a classic history of wildly outrageous gestures in relationships. - like recording ultra cringey cover song karaoke mix tapes. (She said yes and then they broke up about a month later). The ultimate Life as an Imitation of Art, on a whole other level. Hopefully this film serves as great wise warning of the unappealing nature of main character syndrome.

another thing that bothers me about this movie is the shift in public opinion but in a way that's so.. black and white. before, summer was the villain now it's tom. why does it need a villain? it's about the complexity of human relationships. i think people are allowed to be biased towards one character or the other maybe due to personal experiences but still.
ALSO another thing that gets misunderstood a lot by people imo it's when they use it as an example of the manic pixie dream girl trope. i think if anything it's actually a deconstruction of it. if it was the classic manic pixie dream girl movie tom would "get the girl" in the end. and by girl i mean summer i know he gets another girl. Amazing reaction AND post analysis! It is so common for media to sculpt our perspectives and then for reality to crush us and shatter our POVs. Sadly, it's part of the human experience now as media continues to grow and dominate people's time. That being said it is also a good tool for the savvy to divine a person's personality at the time. When people watch movies like '500 Days of Summer' or 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and they say tat they relate to Scott or Tom, then that person may want to re-evaluate themselves. So entertainment media as it stands is a double-edge sword and I think you encapsulated that perfectly. 11 out of 10.

This is such a good movie bc it shows you how skewed the pov of the main guy is. A lot of people during the first viewing hated Summer. Now, it feels like there's been an over correction to where people think Tom is the bad guy. Neither of them are "bad". Tom is too immature and thinks every girl he meets is “the one”. Summer is too immature to know what boundaries look like when she wants something “casual” (she was clearly exploring the idea of wanting more) because she doesn’t really know what she wants.
I think both Summer and Tom grew from their relationship. Summer found hope in love again and Tom became more proactive in his life. Before he was waiting on love to solve problems. At the end, instead of talking himself up about the woman he saw at his new job, he just asked her out. Even though AUTUMN might not be "the one" he hasn't lost hope and he's trying again.

I have an appreciation for this film over the last 10 years... In your early 20s, you side and relate with Tom, and are a little dismissive of Summer. In your mid-20s you start to understand her perspective more or rather Tom's willful ignorance of it, and his projection onto her, he starts to seem like the entitled bad "nice guy", he's childish, and full of red flags, undeserving of sympathy. He kind of became the villain of the film in some peoples eyes. Then it all comes full circle in your late 20s, you have a bit more empathy for him again, you've been in both of their positions now, you understand that they're both flawed people who couldn't communicate honestly, who just weren't right for each other. Time and reflection are a hell of a thing.

The term Manic Pixie Dream Girl describes woman who would work better as a spirit guide, imaginary friend, hallucination, or ghost that only her loser boyfriend can see. If you can imagine that and the story doesn't change much, you have a manic pixie dream girl. She exists for no purpose other than to help some guy become happier.

I never understood everyone saying we misunderstood the movie wrong all these years and Summer isn’t actually the villain because I had no idea where that was coming from,
Not a single person I talked to about the movie thought Summer was the villain. So I don’t know where that idea came from because I have talked to a lot of people about this movie. It could be the country I am from I don’t know, but I’ve never seen Tom as the villain either…
This is a realistic tale of two people who don’t actually know what they want or need yet. Two people who still don’t fully understand what romantic love is going to look like yet in completely different ways.
I’ve always seen them as them both being the bad ones.
Summer didn’t want anything serious and sure she did communicate that of the bat, but she never communicated what she wanted that to look like, what her boundaries were and never asked what he was comfortable with in that. Yes there’s a level of him being responsible for not communicating that, but she is the one who laid down wanting it to be a casual relationship so that gives her the biggest responsibility to lay down what that means. And if she just assumed Tom should know what she means then that shows the lack of maturity she had in understanding in communication in the relationship, which is okay but is part of why it just didn’t work out.
And Tom of course for all the obvious reasons. He had this idealised idea of what the relationship was and could be, and the same about Summer. He believed a little more in the magic of love than the work you put in because you have it for each other.
I think they just both weren’t the right people but not in the wrong way. They helped each other understand love better. So they could find better love. The perfect movie of just what a beautiful mess life can be.
I really want to want to watch this movie being reacted to by someone who hasn’t heard anything about the characters, so I can see their own thoughts because when people go into it with others opinions I feel they are way too hard on Tom but the truth is they were both the bad ones.

I'm from Brazil and I loved your reaction, I had already seen this film but your comments about the relationship between Summer and Tom did me a lot of good. I started having a relationship with a friend from college and we recently cut ties, we don't talk anymore, currently I'm just another person who sits on the other side of the room and she's the same thing to me. It wasn't as smooth as it was in the movie and I'm still not okay with what happened, but I wanted to say thank you because your comments helped me understand why everything happened the way it did.

i watched this movie not too long ago (my memory sucks but within the last year fs!) bc it’s iconic and so many people loved it. i knew it wasn’t a perfect romance movie, but when it ended i didn’t really feel anything. listening to you explain the parallels between it and the graduate made me wish i had seen it, bc i probably would’ve felt more! my only take away at the time was that i couldn’t believe ppl thought summer was the bad guy (i’d seen ppl talking abt that on twt at the time). i mean, i can believe it, but yk. i think that really stems from the fact that so many ppl, even now, go into everything they watch looking for a good guy and a bad guy. when in reality, neither tom or summer are bad people. yes they had their issues, but they’re not evil. there’s no one to rly hate here imo (other than tom’s annoying curly haired friend 😭😭)

I haven't seen this since it came out, and now I'm realizing my ex was similar to Tom. Especially the pancakes line at 20:30, which reminded me of the day I ended it. I was trying to go home to finish a school assignment that was due that night and he kept trying to hang out anyway, suggesting to go get frozen yogurt instead of taking me home. He told me I should've "planned ahead" and finished it earlier, even though I had told him that morning I couldn't hang out but he insisted we at least get lunch. There were so many other problems but that was it for me.
Omg I commented this before i watched the post analysis when you brought up the pancake part again, and it literally is how my breakup went down haha

She should’ve just ended it right there. And he’s so delulu he didn’t even see that it needed to be ended…

What really sucks about the Author Note at the beginning is that one of the writers of this movie wrote it basically totally autobiographical and genuinely thinks Summer was in the wrong throughout this movie. He won't actually say if Jenny Beckham is the girl who inspired Summer's real name but he did give out a lot of personal information about her like where they went to college and the classes they took when they met so if that is her real name it wouldnt be hard to find her... It feels especially gross to me because he also said in an interview that when he wrote the author note it was from a place of anger which makes me really think it is her name...

I watched this movie for the first time when I was 20 and saw some of my own flaws in Tom. Particularly the misogynistic comments he made about Summer. Seeing it showcased like that made me reflect on my own behavior and was one of the things that got me on a journey to change for the better.
I also started dating around the same time I watched it and had the same idealistic/naive look at love (I blame you Ted from "How I Met Your Mother!") and this helped me take a better look at my own delusions. It didn't help that much cuz I still made the same mistakes that Tom and Summer made in subsequent situationships but it's better to have gone through it than not to.
I rewatched it again for the next season of the podcast and pretty much everything you said was what I said in the episode XD. On my first watch, I thought Tom changed by the end but this time around I'm less confident and believe he might make the same mistake or at least to a lesser degree. The one thing my guest noticed that I didn't is that Tom became more confident and directly approached Autumn while with Summer he pined for her for weeks before asking her out.
Anyway, this is one of my favorites mostly because it gives the same vibe as "Pushing Daisies" in that it has somewhat of a fairy tale book atmosphere to it. I don't get to see that type of film a lot but when I do, I eat it up!
    Great video as always!

I've watched this movie numerous times over the years and in a way, I feel like it's been a different experience every time. Over the years through my own life/relationship experiences my perspective and opinions on it have changed. Took longer than it should have to realize how unhealthy Tom's idealizing of her and their relationship was. Due to how often I was guilty of doing it myself. Where you want a relationship to work out so badly that you keep ignoring the signs or hoping that they will change their mind. Never worked out and I wish I'd known better or stood up for myself more. Always easier looking back on things though, rather than when you're currently experiencing it.
I agree with you though in that Summer while continuingly saying she wanted to keep things casual... didn't always keep it that casual. I get how that would confuse him. But, really, they just both needed to be more open and honest about things. Rather than just saying "I'm happy" when they're not. Or "It's fine". Never fixes anything.

  • @RoyKoopaling

The truth of the film is that both of the characters are flawed and they have a perfectly normal relationship where both of the characters have faults and do things wrong. It was absurd that either character was thought of as a villain. The last decade has been a wave of contrarians with little life experience trying to force their silly perceptions onto movies, etc.
Honestly, I think it’s quite fair to say this is a bit of a contemporary classic. It really manages to capture the humanity of a relationship in one’s twenties.
PS- crazy that saying ‘Hey, I don’t like that fashion style’ is somehow a comment that needs to be “defended”. Lmao. What.

They both are the problem Tom invested too much of himself into summer and she abused that and took advantage of Tom until she was bored with him and found another guy to throw herself at. Summer is definitely the bad one causing problems but its because Tom let her because he was convinced that's what love was.

Tom develops a mildly delusional obsession over a profession onto which he projects his career fantasies. He thinks being an architect will give his life meaning because his current well paying job with good benefits does not give much meaning to his life. He quits his job only because it is not his dream job and he has a plate-smashing tantrum. He was lucky to get interviews, but he remains unemployed. The ending is open-ended so you can imagine if he gets hired.
