    This speaks a lot to me because I get attached to quickly and have trouble moving on and I have trouble letting go of moments that are shared between me and someone, it caused me to imagine every moment where I could’ve been with that someone. I actually think she learns two things. She learned that she didn’t love him but she also learned that love could be real. That the way Tom loved her was something she could feel. So that when the right guy for her came along she could acknowledge that Tom was right.

    This film is SO misunderstood. People just project their shitty relationships and completely miss the point. The film is about moving on! Cycles and expectations!
    I love to contrast it with my favourite film: eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Both of them are stories about love instead of love stories. one is about what happens when you are a stubborn baby and the other about adult relationships.
    Very good video!

    • @MrMeddyman
      @MrMeddyman 5 лет назад +37

      That's a part of it. The movie is also undeniably about self sufficiency, walking your own path as a man and realizing you can control anyone's actions but your own, being realistic rather than idealistic about love.
      It's a true ish story about a girl the director got hung up on. After his breakup everything that happened to Tom happened to him but he also like Tom used the painful experience to push himself in his work. He even invited the girl in question to the movies premiere. She loved it and had no idea it was about her and didn't even know or didn't remember the effect their breakup had on him. If that isn't a testament to his viewpoint on love idk what is. It's not real. Like summer says in the movie it's all relative all in your head

She dumps emotional loads on him that she's "never told anyone before." They're cohabiting, not just having sex but staying over in each others spaces frequently. Those are some Very mixed signals. He is 100% in the wrong for projecting a lot of pretty sexist toxicity in the relationship, but she is also in the wrong for being toxically oblivious. I had a summer in my first years of college, was with her for two years. She would say we weren't in a relationship, yet I met her parents, grandma. We'd celebrate valentines day/ anniversary BUT she'd tell me we weren't a couple and "just friends" I was so in love with her. She was my first everything, first kiss, first "relationship" first time having sex. She'd say she loved me & then only saw me as a friend. I honestly thought she was the one. When we separated, I was defeated, broken. I would call off work because I couldn't get up, depression hit me so hard, took a while to get over her... Then met a girl who ended up being my Autumn, been with her for 6 years now & still going strong.

    The movie is about false expectations of love imo. How, even though we may fall in love, our expectations must match.
    Tom was a stubborn fool. He spent 500 days doing this shit. He didn't realise that even though Summer loved him, she wouldn't commit to him. No amount of "but we behave like a couple" can change that. He only saw the good times.
    Summer is scared of commitment. People keep acting like summer didn't want a relationship but she did. She was just scared to have it with Tom. She lead him on. She gave him false hope in her behaviour. She used him to feel good in the moment at his expense, expecting him to tolerate and be content with that.
    I think people place too much emphasis on Summers words or her behaviour. If you look closely, you'll realise the conflict that was there. They were both selfish. They were both entitled. They were both uncompromising.

    • @salixcaprea2459

      While I do agree with you to a certain extent, the whole point is that she stated clearly, multiple times to Tom that she didn't want a relationship and that they weren't in one, which proves she's was not using him. She may have subconsciously been searching for one, but that doesn't undermine the fact that Tom imposed his idea of love on her. He kept giving himself hope that what they had could turn to he wanted it to be. Also we never really see through Summer's eyes, only his, so I don't think it's possible to speak of her true feelings. With that said Sage's video is really great! :)

      I would say that fault many falls on Tom for being too delusional about true love. Plus yea she did say she didn't want to commit to a relationship, but to be fair Tom also told her at the bar that he believes in true love and commitment so she kinda should've known to not try a relationship with him. Overall tho, they both learned and regained clarity on what they want

      Summer said "I wasn't sure with you" at the end of the movie. That was nicely saying, "I wasn't sure I ever loved you." She didn't. Tale as old as time; people who swear they hate romance and monogamy settle down the moment they experience true love. And sadly, some people like Tom end up broken and alone for a long time due to their hopeless romanticism, which in itself is fine as long as you stayed grounded in reality.

    I've been in Tom's position, wanting to give somebody my all and believing in my heart they were right for me. But they don't share the same feelings I do and like Tom I've got to understand I can't control their emotions or their love, I have to accept I'm not entitled to a relationship just because I love someone, we have a connection, and we've had great moments together. Sometimes its best to let someone go.

    This movie encapsulates what I literally went through. Except for my story, she didn’t tell me she didn’t want a relationship. I went through the same pain as Tom did. I thought exactly the same as him that I needed someone to feel complete and thinking that all I needed was my ex to have a fulfilling life. I even went through the same reality vs expectations period that he went through. She invited me to a party where she had a partner already and I had to get out of there as soon as possible. I became depressed and drunk the days away to feel numb because my feelings were hurt so much.
    But like Tom, I quit my old job to find a new job in the field I wanted to be in. I challenged myself and continued to persist in finding myself. I developed a sense of purpose and true meaning to what my life is supposed to be. In a way, I needed to go through what happened to me so I can find myself and redefine my beliefs and expectations.
    While the pain is still lingering, I know that what happened was for the better because I know I should look out for myself when I fall in a relationship.
    There is no thing such as fate, everything is just a big coincidence.
    This is the reason why this movie is my favourite because it shows to me how far I have learnt and accepted to be myself. It shows the battle that I went through to get to where I am today. It wasn’t easy but I can definitely say it was worth it.

    Whoa! I need to watch this film. I always believed in fate, specifically in the spectrum of love. We all think we have a soulmate out there for us. Though there is absolutely someone for each and everyone one of us, there isn't a predetermined romantic partner for us specifically made for you by God or any other deity.
    I have met two girls in my life who came to me at what felt like the right time, at the right place. It all just seemed to make sense to me that I've met them in such a particular circumstance, whether I was depressed or content. But that simply isn't true.
    I believe in order to make a relationship work, you both have to want it, whether it be for shallow reasons, or for a sense of deep fulfillment. In the instance of my parents, they both fell in love with each other because my mother was in a super oppressive family; my uncles were forcing her to marry another man who was in a polygamous relationship, because he was rich. Besides chivalry my father fell in love with my mom because his first wife had just passed away, leaving him with children with no mother to love them. In other words, Love is when two people are in desperate need for something.

      Because I know the person was attracted to me, loved spending time with me, but wouldnt commit because they had just gotten out of a long relationship just months prior and didnt want another one.
      And had I continued meeting this person, they would have done just as Summer did, stringing me along - because I was allowing them to.
      Tom should have just walked away from the start.

    The "status" thing always tends to ruin a relationship cause it comes with bullshit expectations that one thinks they need to meet in order to be "worthy" of them, and for them to be deemed "acceptable" by society as a couple. It becomes more about the appearance of being happy and finding true love, then, well, actually being happy and in love. Not every romantic endeavor is one way, and people really need to stop projecting what they think love is onto others and themselves. Once I let go of all my preconceived notions of what love was, I was able to form the best relationships with people and myself.

    I only watched this once back when I was in high school on HBO, I honestly laughed at the beginning whenever narrator said that the movie was not a love story. The movie never really grabbed my attention, it seemed like another film on another pointless love story, and some sad ending that seemed pointless. I never fully understood why things happened the way it did and never understood the scene when Tom realized all the signs he overlooked between him and Summer.
    How naïve I was.
    After watching it a few years later, and seeing this video, it immediately prompted me to go back and watch the movie again. Seeing it now taught me many things and helped me realized something. A lot of those things were pointed out in this video and I don't I would've noticed if it wasn't for you. So thank you. I guess for me the biggest takeaway is to not let your ideas of what you want someone else to be in flood your mind and ignore reality. I hope I can learn to love and accept myself and to accept separation, even in friendships.

    We can hold two things to be true at the same time. Yes, Summer stated she didn’t want a relationship; however, she still led Tom on knowing how he felt about her. She should have ended it or rejected any advance he made. She doesn’t though.

      So relatable. Bro like I just don’t know how to explain it I just related so much. This girl led me on and on and I fell hard for her even though she said not ready for a relationship but we still kept hanging out and kissing. Until we agreed to only be friends and she kissed me again and now as we speak now whenever I see her or hang out with her part of me expects something like a hug or a kiss I just don’t know

    If he had just listened when she said I dont want a relationship, the rest of the movie wouldn't have happened.
    I've been there. When they say they don't want a relationship (for whatever reason), tell them how you feel too, wish them the best and stop meeting them.
    This situationship got dragged out too long and caused so much of headache and heartache. Totally unnecessary. But that was the only cure for Tom's stubborness and delusion, I suppose.

    It's not a matter of the perfect person maybe some of us just haven't gotten to the point of 100% wanting to be alone.
    Being a giving person, I love giving, and I want someday to find someone who honestly loves me before I die.
    This too you have showed me is more than probable 0%.

    This is one of my favorite movies ever, mostly because my perceptions about the film has changed and evolved so much as I watched it again and again. Initially I appreciated it about a story about not being caught up on the past and the importance of moving on, but as time went on I came to appreciate that I was more like Tom than I realised and also completely missed Summer's character. So much so that I came to recognise the same thing in my own relationships. This film is truly a gem

    I think the problem with this is the same old story. Is not the same "friends with benefits" than "lovers without a label". That happen to me, but Tom and Summer were lovers without a label because she was just afraid of commitment but kept behaving like a girlfriend and giving him affection , at the same time telling him that she didn´t want nothing serious. She was not having sex or nothing with another guy, they were exclusive to each other. Is not the same hunging out with someone and having casual sex like BBF than sleeping in other houses, adding deep stuff into the relationship, giving love and affection and expecting the other person to not get attatched. She was a dick as well, specially at the end. She had a boyfriend and was still flirting with Tom knowing that he didn´t move on... only to satisfy her ego. On the other part inviting him to the same party as her boyfriend was gonna attend is plain wrong. How many of us would like to be in a party with the ex lover of our current partner? Nope. I think the whole point of this movie is to realize that both of them were wrong. One to get ultra attached to someone that doesn´t want to and the other one to take advantage of a situation.

    • @Dancediva240
      @Dancediva240 Год назад

      Yup. Her dick behaviour was very real but it was enabled by Tom, because he allowed himself to get involved with someone who stated from the beginning she didnt want a relationship. He basically thought he could change her mind and later gets mad that her mind never changed.
      When ppl say they don't want relationship - PLS EVERYONE, BELIEVE THEM FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.

    Pretty logical explanation, until you started talking about fate, meant to be & “the one”.... People feel a relationship is meant to be when they meet each others narratives. Their levels of attraction & interest are matched, and their fundamental values are similar so not to create too much tension or stress (which would take away from attraction ). The more incompatible two people are, the more likely it won’t work out. It’s not impossible for it to work out, just more difficult. Just because it’s more difficult, doesn’t mean it’s not the best option.
    At the end of the day it comes down to choice, compatibility & communication, not fate and “the one”.

    • @Dancediva240
      @Dancediva240 Год назад

      Well, I could bump into a guy at the supermarket on that one day of the week I would never usually go to the supermarket and we could hit it off and become a couple 2 months later, last for a year and then go our separate ways.
      It WAS meant to be, we were meant to meet, we were meant to be a couple, but we were also meant to separate a year later despite everything falling into place in the beginning.
      Meant to be and fate refer to the temporariness of events too, I guess, not just permanence. Because you cannot engineer events in your life a lot of the time. If something is meant to happen, good or bad, it happens.

    I really enjoyed this one, your videos are really well thought out and beautifully explain so many themes and ideas. 500 Days is a great movie for that Growth that comes from heartbreak, and for the beauty in relationships that indeed don't last-that indeed never even were, but for one side.
    I don't agree that Summer didn't learn anything though, and I think that's an important point to make. They learned from each other as you said, but she didn't only learn she didn't want someone she never wanted. She learnt that she DOES want love; just that Tom is unfortunately not the person who inspires those feelings (unsurprisingly, given how immature he is, with his selfishness and entitlement). And learning not to be closed off to the idea of love is as important as learning you're not entitled to someone's love because they fit your ideal.
