I kinda like this movie more than the more realistic, dramatic ones. Love how it makes fun of conversion therapy, homophobia, gay stereotypes etc., discrediting it all.
Same!!!
the funniest thing about this movie is the fact that THE RuPaul wore a shirt that says "straight is great"
I love this movie, I always cry tears of joy when Megan accepts herself for who she is, and when she gives that cheer to Graham, proving her love to her. 👭🏳️🌈💘
THE CHEER WAS TOO SWEET 😭😭😭
UR PFP OMGGG❤❤ and YESSSS
This movie, as a closeted lesbian, made me feel so much better about myself in a way. When I saw how Meghan was portrayed I really felt seen ykwim??
I feel like there's always one person so ykwim? = You Know What I Mean?
@@yukikanegawa7470while the topic’s at hand, what does “hmu” mean?
@@anifan1311this is old but it means “hit me up” ;if someone says it that means they want you to message them or somethinf
Yeah ikwym
Im 9 months late but it means 'hit me up' lol@@anifan1311
That red hair is so flattering on you! And my ADHD ass kept getting distracted by how it catches light.
Also personal thanks to Clea Duvall for awakening something in me at age 11. She really is one of the greats.
Aww thank you 🫶🏼 I was worried about how bright it was at first, but I think it goes really well with my skin tone 😮💨
And omg yeah she made me feel some type of way during this movie 🙈
@@SophiaPhannnAlso please o loved your blue hair. What dye did you use ?
i grew up mormon and it was shoved down my throat from birth that i would “marry a man in the temple” so i never really thought twice about not liking men. this movie was an integral part of me learning accept myself as a lesbian. it means so much to me and my queer identity and i’m so glad it’s been getting more recognition recently
god as a mormon this movie hit soooooo good
This is why children shouldn’t watch movies like this. You were straight until you watched this because it influenced you and your brain.
@@honks9484lets be real if all it takes is a movie to make you gay then you probably weren't straight to begin with.
@@honks9484If she "turned gay" by watching a movie, then she can "turn straight" by watching other movie. Oh wait, it doesn't work like that. Sorry to ruin your shitty view on sexuality.
@@honks9484Thats complete bullshit and i don't even know why but it gets used a lot. Watching things related to queer people just makes people learn about the existence of queer people. It just shows people that they have a choice. You cant turn someone queer nor can you turn someone straight. Its been like a year so i hope you grew out of that closeted mindset.
this film is only underrated when it comes to straight ppl, this is a beloved film to the queers ! 😭💞
just another piece of evidence we are the one with taste.......unlike the straights.
Ugh excuse me, straight person alert, 🤨 I love this movie.
@@shaunaray1 Same boat here; straight and love it. In fact, it genuinely helped me shake off the brainwashing I got during my cult upbringing and realize my doubts had been right all along. Only much later did I realize the bigotry is not even biblical because the bible is mistranslated, but this movie had long since helped me understand that sexuality is innate and no one can change it.
What's crazy is this movie would be more "controversial" if it came out now than it was back in '99. The only "controversy" about this movie I could find from 1999 was this "The film was not well received by critics who compared it unfavorably to the films of John Waters and criticized the colorful production design. The lead actors were praised for their performances but some of the characters were described as stereotypical."
The 2020s suck
the way sophia ate this hair color, she always eats all haircolors but this one is so MOTHER
THANK YOU 😩 I needed this validation because I missed the blue 🫶🏼
@@SophiaPhannn ofc, i miss the blue hair too but mother is mothering in red-ish brown/maroon, the hair is eating and u also look like ur part of the fire nation (i meant that in a good way but idk how to explain)💖
Happy Pride Month. 🏳️🌈
This is one of the best sapphic romance stories I've seen and one of the most criminally underrated. Apparently there's now a stage musical version in Britain. I'm glad it's finally starting to gain some traction.
Wait I think I’ve heard about the stage production happening. Hope it can come to the US soon!
@@SophiaPhannn Cool
yeah the musical is so fun and has become one of my dream product to be part of
either this movie has aged remarkably well' antilgbtq+ arguments haven't changed since 1999 they've just gotten louder' or both.........it's probaly both.
It's both.
Yes but you guys and gals and non-binary pals can get a TWICE AS LOUDER!🎉🏳️🌈
Have you seen Saving Face yet? One of my favorite LGBT films and it has Asian leads, Michelle Krusiec and Lynn Chen, written and directed by Alice Wu. My other favorite film but with guys is Shelter (2007). Very underrated films, neither overly goofy or tragic.
That movie is absolutely wonderful! Much more realistic but still romantic and sweet.
such a classic, & one of the rare lesbian movies that actually has a happy ending 💕 also don’t know if you saw the end credit scene of Megan’s parents at a PFLAG meeting - her dad was making an effort
I like how color coded this movie is. The girls are pink, the boys are blue like to reinforce the stereotypes, but everyone else is just... Brown.
I saw this movie the first time I was a teen probably. I knew I wasn't straight but I didn't know I had A TYPE yet hehehe (it's Graham), and i think they make everything in True Directions look plastic and fake - even the flowers! - because this life is just pretend. You are who you are and that's real.
My mom showed me this movie when I came out as lesbian. Now I’m a trans guy, so not really lesbian. I still appreciate this movie tho super adorable
there is actually an after credits scene where megans parents are on a meeting for suportive parents of queer kids. i think thats important to point out that they accepted her and didnt throw her out even tho megans mom was really hesitant
Happy Pride Month, Sophia! 🏳️🌈This is one of my favourite LGBTQA plus movies of all time, plus it recently received a musical adaptation, which is well worth a look. Its soundtrack is also a bop. 💕
WAIT THERE'S A MUSICAL????
I think Sophia is straight tho
man. i'm gonna be 30 in september, and this takes me back to being a 15 year old closeted lesbian and watching this movie in secret
I saw this movie first in 2020 like a couple before my egg cracked and I realized I’m not cis, to now where I’m a femme trans girl. Now this movie is in my top 15 fav movies of all time. I love how it celebrates both masc and femme identities, me being feminine, I cry at the part when Megan tells Graham how cheerleading (Something very seen as feminine) means so much to her. She’s unapologetically feminine. 😭😭
Megan’s cheer for Graham _always_ makes me tear up. It’s just so sweet and romantic! 🥹
Every time I see the kissing scene with Megan's boyfriend I start to laugh.
I made the EXACT same face kissing my bf when I was a teen.
Tuns out I am a lesbian (and a vegetarian btw 😂) and I really don't know why I didn't realize it sooner 😂
Tbf her bfs a really bad kisser 😭
I always die laughing seeing THE RuPaul running up in a straight is great shirt. Peak comedy if I ever saw it lolololol
Yeah, I've had both a girlfriend and a boyfriend who were really bad kissers. Some people just do not know how to kiss. But not being into it doesn't help either. Lol. This is such a great, iconic queer film and I love it. It still holds up pretty well after all these years!!!
I watched this movie at like 10 and was so confused and just thought “that was a weird movie” (not because gay stuff but because of how it was shot) and rewatched a few years ago. I was sobbing throughout and felt so connected to it 💖 it’s such an important movie for queer people
I watched this movie for the first time I think last year and underneath that colorful, satirical storytelling I also thought it had some really deep themes. It’s wild how many famous people are in it, and I LOVE the irony of Rupaul being in it. As for movie suggestions, "The Birdcage" is very memorable for Robin Williams’ performance and one of the first LGBT+ films I remember watching.
Happy Pride! Loving the red hair. Big Ariel vibes! Hilarious making the 'You' connection. I made the same one when I first saw 'You' after seeing this. A couple of good LGBTQ+ film suggestions are Moonlight, Booksmart, or To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar.
I couldn't believe when I looked up Natasha Lyonne that she's not actually a lesbian... the two roles I know her for, she plays a massive lesbian very convincingly lol
Melanie Lynskey is a New Zealander, not Australian, but she's played very convincing Americans throughout her career that made me believe she was from the US.
The way I GASPED when this popped up!!! This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. Love your reaction videos & this movie so yaaaaay! Happy pride y’all 🌈✨
Now THIS is a classic LGBTQ+ movie! It's funny, got a good message, and just an overall fun movie! However there is something really disturbing and yet hilarious at the same time about when Mary was using her son to simulate straight sex. Kinda felt like a mom watching and directing her son to do porn. 🤢
Real talk:Conversion camps/therapy make me fucking sick! It really saddens me how they are still a thing to this day.
also this movie looks great as a b1 tr@ns person who grew up in "the church" this really reflects the bs culture i gotta watch it thanks for this video sophia :)
That intro gave me flashbacks to the Mean Girls video where Sophia first says something like "I wanted to be a cool asian" only to later go "Not do brag but...I was in Mathletes". Maybe being head Dorkleader is a thing? 😄😇
I'm sorry haha. Either way, new hair looks amazing!
Thanks haha 🫶🏼
As always your hair looks amazing I saw this movie years ago when I was about 10 and I found out they also just turned it into a musical in the West End❤
Thank you! And I heard, I hope it comes to the US soon!
I didn't get this movie when I first watched it. Or 'D.E.B.s'. I wasn't mature enough to see what they were trying to say. I didn't even know camps to force people to be what they aren't were real!
When the talks about conversion "therapy" were in the news and I finally watched it again, it clicked.
I see this movie as a dark comedy that hides the serious horror underneath. Threats of being kicked out of the family and house, being physically attacked or rejected, that's all very real.
THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD! I watched it with my friends in my freshmen year, so iconic 🏳️🌈🥰
I remember catching this movie in pieces too here and there. The first time I watched it in one sitting it made it even better. So funny and I’ll watching it whenever. It’ll be free on RUclips from time to time.
Omg I was a big fan of your blue hair but Jesus how are you beautiful with every single color I have seen you in. Happy pride Sophia please stay safe and thank you for your hard work. 🫶🏼🥹🌈
Awww thank you, you’re so sweet 🫶🏼 I miss the blue a lot, but I like this color a lot too 🥲 happy pride! 🏳️🌈
@@SophiaPhannn red was definitely the move, you look amazing as always.☺️
This was one of the first lgbtq+ movies I watched, back when I wasn't really sure if I was gay (Man looking back at that now it's hilarious lol) and it still has a very special place in my heart
I love this movie! Also a part that you didn’t include is that midway into the credits they show a clip of Megan’s parents at a PFLAG meeting. It adds an extra touch of hope to the ending that I think is worth mentioning
this movie is so underrated but so good. there's actually a scene in the credits at the end where it shows megans parents at a group meeting for parents with gay kids
Yes, it's a P-FLAG meeting!
Yaaaaaaassss to the red hair ❤😍😊😊
This was one of those movies I tried to watch when I was younger but turned it off very early into the movie trying to convince myself I didn't like girls. I only saw this movie as an adult maybe a year or two ago and loved it! I probably would've felt more confidant about being bi if I watched it all the way through. Happy pride 🏳️🌈
Ooh, impeccable choice. I love that Megan's parents are Bud Cort and Mink Stole - most of Mink's movies are with (queer icon, filth elder) John Waters and probably not suitable for youtube. But Harold and Maude is a wonderful film for after Pride.
Have you ever seen The Birdcage? or F*cking Amal aka Show Me Love? Both classics for the season. Also, nice hair.
i love this movie with all my god damn heart
"Kissing girls is so much better than kissing men..." truth!
Always love whenever Sophia uploads a new movie commentary. Happy Pride Month, Sophia!
🫶🏼🏳️🌈
I love so much about this movie... the cast, the soundtrack, the pallette/textures, the script
I also had the experience of thinking this movie was a fever dream and couldn't remember the name of the film or the names of the actors who starred in it , so I just gave up on trying to find it. So glad I've recently rediscovered it .
ive loved this movie for yearssssss the most mindblowing part was finding out this actor was in oitnb bc id watched both and never noticed 😭
Genuinely one of my favorite movies. This was my gay awakening way back when
i just watched this movie and i loved it, i liked that it had femme lesbian representation
YOUR HAIR LOOKS SO GOOOOOOOD
Thanks bro 😎
This movie will always be my favorite but some other really good ones are "Better than Chocolate", "Imagine Me & You", "Kissing Jessica Stein", and "Saving Face"
I'd recommend watching Carol (2015)! It's a lovely 1esbian movie, based on the iconic novel from the 50's by 1esbian writer Patricia Highsmith! A beautiful movie, one of my favorite romantic films. It stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney mara too ❤
Also sorry for the cens0ring of some words, RUclips literally didn't let me post the comment until I cens0red that word :c
"you don't need to save me... but would you run away with me?" "yes..."
I still wish Mink Stole had a bigger role in this. A true icon
I watched this movie for the first time in the winter and now its an honorary winter movie for me 😂❄️
I love this movie so much! It's so refreshing to see a wlw movie that's this fun and ACTUALLY has a happy ending. If you're looking for a queer movie rec, I have to recommend you Maurice (1987), it's such a gem!
Is no one gonna talk about that kissing scene n the beginning. Scarred for life😭
Glad this popped up in my recs! My wife & I saw this in the theatre when it was released! Ever since ‘Heavenly Creatures’ I have been in love with Melanie Lynskey, so I was only upset that Natasha Lyonne’s character didn’t end up with her.
Also, 2 of my older crushes were in this: Cathy Moriarty has been a fave of mine forever, & Bud Cort (the dad) starred in the camp classic ‘Harold & Maude’.
Everyone we knew loved it, but since we only knew artistic, Queer types… yeah
Great reaction!🌈🏳️⚧️
I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it to be a nice representation of LGBTQ+ relationships. It’s a true cult classic.
As for other LGBTQ+ movie recommendations, here are a few suggestions: "Moonlight," "Carol," and "The Favourite" are all fantastic films with nuanced depictions of queer relationships.
And your red hair is quite beautiful! It's always fun to change up your look. Looking forward to the next movies!
I love this movie! as a closeted bi girl it was everything to me
Ahhh I was just watching this movie the other day! It's really nice to know that movies like this existed in a time when this stuff was still kind of taboo.
I have never heard of this before 😂. Love your hair by the way
Thank you 🥰
6:10 - She's from New Zealand in real life! Happy Pride, Sophia!
That’s crazy because I thought she was American for the longest time until I looked her up after watching this 😱😱😱 when her wiki page literally says she’s good at American accents LOOOOOL
@@SophiaPhannn 'Heavenly Creatures' would also be a good one to watch for Pride Month. That was both her and Kate Winslet's first movie.
@@rowanc88 YES! Heavenly Creatures would be amazing!
THIS IS SO CRAZY BC i randomly watched this for the first time the other day and loved it and then i see u uploaded a video for it!??! like yeah it is pride month but i didnt even watch it for that, i just wanted to see it
it really is like the stars aligned🤣i love your videos so much, thank you for sharing them!!
You didn't have to call me put like that at the beginning. I'm ugly and proud! 😂😂😂
Gonna updates as the video goes.
So there's a now outdated joke about lesbians being vegetarians because they don't like meat. As in penis. I'm so happy I don't have to explain the fish joke lol.
The woman who played the antagonist in Casper does great as the house mother.
I am LOVING how campy and gay this movie is so far. It's a nice change from the macabre Brokeback Mountain.
It's also the 90s, so everyone smoked.
As you go further into this movie you're getting the sexual humor more and I am living for it.
Not asking for realism in your sapphic romantic comedy from 1999 lol
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!! it's one of my 4 favorites on letterboxd lol. i'm so happy you're watching it!!
The Birdcage or Priscilla Queen of the Desert are two other 90s classics that get me every time
Also if you haven't seen Pride (2014) it's amazing for both queer rep AND class consciousness
I second that, I have seen way too few people watch that one!
