I think this movie highlighted how bad LGBT rep typically is. The straight couple was the replacement of what usually is the gay couple in movies. Gross, over sexualized side jokes. They genuinely made me straightphobic

honestly, that's EXACTLY what i would have loved to have as a lesbian teenager. i'm tired of tragedy and all i want is just standard predictable tropes the straights always get. i don't even need to love the pairing, i just want to see more queer people existing and doing mundane life stuff like the heteros have had for so long. i'm glad the younger gen is getting to see all this come to fruition in film and tv. Definitely agree on the adults part, though... i could definitely have done without their weird comments all through the film.

There is a comic called fresh romance where one story involves two lesbian high schoolers who fall in love, have their friend be their beard despite falling for a witch girl, and its not too tragic or even at all.

Honestly “what the straights get?” They get tragedy too! I know what you’re saying but they wouldn’t even think of giving gay ppl a tragic ending these years.
What bothers me is that sometimes the opposite happens where things are *_too_* idyllic for the Igbtq because not a single friend or family member has said anything remotely microaggressive. Never ever slipping up pronouns or deadnames even when the reveal happens within the series. Or how the Igbtq or black and/or female character has to be… no…. has to STATE that she is a champion for black/female/Igbtq people. You know what I mean?

So Moana's a bicon??? It was really nice to see her acting beyond her voice. I hope she goes far!
There was a good deal of cringe in the script of this movie, but it was also nice to see some of these tropes through a queer lense. I'm ready for more LGBTQIA+ rep!
    Happy Pride Month!!! ❤️💜💙

Okay so about the drama with the main actress Rowan Blanchard she was biphobic and Auli’i Cravhalo is bisexual and she basically mentioned Rowan was biphobic, it’s funny how people on Twitter were really patting Auli’i on the back and championing her for this when she probably got in trouble lol calling out people in Hollywood even if they deserve it is a big no no

23:59 You ever see a 'A Goofy Movie" from 1995? It's no more crazy than Max putting together his Powerline presentation with only a few days notice. True that was a Cartoon, but if you've got a small group effort going, you'd be surprised what you can accomplish in a day. Especially if you're inspired by luuurrrrrvvvee...
22:56 Sooooo is Mullaly just rehashing the super inappropriate elements of her character from Will & Grace for this performance? I mean don't get me wrong, it's nice to have a parent that doesn't treat you like a coddled little angel who can't handle the in's and out's of this sinful, barbarous world. But she's basically taken it a s few steps beyond that into "yeah I drink with my daughter and I know she's barely 18, what of it?" territory. LOTS of casual drinking and sex in this film, on par with some 80s rom-coms. And maybe that's the point? Leaning into the behavior of some teenagers, where this stuff is just kinda expected anyway, so why beat around the bush? I guess the 'drunken teen tries to kiss someone and makes things awkward' trope is served well here; it's established earlier that they both drink and party and have a good time, so this kind of interaction wouldn't be off-brand. But couldn't that be displayed just as well by them being exhausted from dancing or it being really late and they almost get caught by the coach (like the first kiss) to achieve the same ends?
Films like this with very bright, verbally skilled, socially aware protagonists kinda rub me the wrong way sometimes. If Paige is as smart, engaging, accomplished and dismissive of authority as she proports to be...why is it so difficult to talk to her crush? And yeah yeah yeah, emotional maturity is not the same thing as social maturity, our deepest desires are sometimes the things that can destroy us if we can't achieve/obtain/access them in some meaningful way, I know it's not always as simple as "talk to the girl". I've been there, I get it. But to me it feels like stretched, forced conflict. Now, what happens between Paige and AJ feels a little more organic, certainly, but there's still the lingering sense of 'no, this isn't according to plan, I should be resisting this and focusing on the thing I've been focusing on since the beginning of act one'.
Perhaps we could just...do away with all that, maybe?
Critics of this film praised how the writers and the director portrayed an inclusive same-sex relationship as conventional, rather than anti-establishment, and to a degree, I get that. But with the openness of how people flaunt their drinking, sexual habits, snubbing authority and using their brains to figure out solutions vs blind luck, why can't we have a relationship (same sex or otherwise) where the characters go "oh, damn, I was WAY off base with how I thought I felt here, maybe I should be paying attention to the actual chemistry I've established with this other person?"
Both girls are clearly smart enough to come to that conclusion and irreverent enough to pull-off a meaningful, plot-relevant admission that they might have been wrong, while not breaking character. We can give a big ole' SKIP to the 'final act liar revealed' trope which grinds my gears like NOBODYS business and focus on happy lovers exploring their relationship for, like, 10 minutes or so. THEN we could show the culmination of this by showing Paige being inspired to do the mural (over a reasonable amount of time) and use THAT as a huge part of her portfolio for college admissions, not as a 'I kinda screwed up, here's this giant thing I made, overnight, to make up for the fact that I wasn't communicating my feelings effectively before". They could make that interesting, certainly a little less forced than this felt. It was cute and frank and fun in places, yes, but as I'm watching all I could think of was "this is not a conflict that needs to be stretched out 90 minutes. Make it more about the art, less about the 'will she won't she' while maintaining the normalization that this kind of relationship really should have in public schools anyway". I think that would be more compelling.
But I digress. Good review! The theme works for the summer, definitely. If you could stomach one of the "American Pie" films, that might be a good contrast to this film. :-P

i honestly didn’t like this movie in the beginning. once the focus was fully put onto the girls, it was fine. but in the beginning when they were building up to their romantic moments and drama, all the sexual jokes from the mother and stuff were just awful 😭 i’m not bothered by sexual things but i know when something is too much n isn’t that funny. the weird jokes felt like compensation for time almost. idk, it was just unnecessary. it is nice to see a single mother who is doing well and truly cares for n supports her daughter, but i think we could’ve done without the overly sexual talks.

see, I like the idea of this movie. It́'s just very very realistic, and I don't like what's real right now (the sheer amount of "gay" kids at school, the sensitivity, the literal mom. It just makes me frustrated because they did it so well. Similar to Senior Year with Rebel Wilson. It's just like, the world and American culture really sucks right now and I watch TV to get away from that.) Most people aren't ay and the more we push this on people the more confused and hurt people will become. We do not need to be giving 13-year-olds identity crises and you can say whatever you want but hab=ving the majority be the norm isn't a bad thing as long as we don't shame the minority. This is coming from a lesbian, we just gotta chill out a little. Every single girl at my school is some form of "bi" and you know that's not actually true they just want attention and they don't wanna be straight because rn the world is making it out to be a bad thing.
