One thing I love about this movie is how it really shows how strong female friendships can be and also the inverse when it becomes toxic as hell. So often in women centered stories everyone might fight but "sisterhood save the day". Which is nice but sometimes someone's unhinged and staying in that dynamic even if it might kill you feels like the only choice so I'm glad they showed the more toxic side of female friendships.
I had no idea until years later that Robin Tunney was wearing a wig as Sarah. She'd shaved her hair off for "Empire Records", so had a pixie cut during her audition. The director stated that he'd be happy to have Tunney sport her real hair, but the studio insisted on the wig.
Fun fact Nancy the "crazy" one the actress for her was actually very much into spirituality and the occult so she gave alot of insight to the methods and stuff behind the acting as a witch to the other actors. Or at least that's what they said in a interview
All four of the girls correspond to a certain element, which befits their respective personalities. Sarah is Earth, since she's the most grounded and mature, Nancy is Air, since she's the wildest and most unpredictable, Bonnie suits Fire, since she was burned by one, and is compassionate, and Rochelle is Water, as she's gentle, soothing, and goes with the flow.
Switch Bonnie and Nancy. Bonnie is air, and Nancy is fire. Bonnie has seer qualities, she's the first one to notice Sarah's power, Nancy is totally out of control and destructive.
One thing I hate is Rachel True, who plays Rochelle, was left out of the junket circuit to promote the movie when it originally came out. Supposedly the other three main actresses Neve, Fairuza, and Robin did as little as possible in solidarity initially but lately they've been leaving her off reunion and conventions. Not sure if they've brought it up but the fact that this shit happened in 2019 is some extra-strength bull shit.
I remember Rachel True stating that Fairuza Balk (Nancy) was the only one to actually let her know that she was being left out of official reunions and conventions. I remember her posting about not having been invited to a con a few years ago on instagram, and shouting out Fairuza for letting her know. Still doesn't erase the fact that what she's being put through is shitty as fuck, but it's nice to know she has at least one castmate seemingly on her side. Idk about how it was back in the day though, and if they truly did nothing that's not excusable.
I think those films (and Jawbreakers) are hard to compare to each other: "The Craft" is a fantasy story, "Heathers" is a black comedy with societal messages, "Jawbreakers" is a black comedy with no societal message (and I didn't like the ending, personally), and Mean Girls is the most different by being more light-hearted while still sharing a message.
@@OpticalSorcerer and yet, they all have in common the toxic relationships between teenage girls, social insecurities, commentary on class and belonging and so on and so forth🙄
@@OpticalSorcerermaybe not as overt, but it's there. In The Craft, the bullies were all upper class white folks looking down on the poor (Nancy), the POCs (), the differently abled, and theose with mental health issues (Sarah). The girls turn toward witchcraft as a way to express their agency, gain a better social.position in the HS hierarchy and fight back against their bullies.
My theory for The Craft was always that Bonnie, Nancy, and Rochelle initially had to siphon their magic from Sarah, a true witch. Prior to creating a coven with her, they likely were just doing what Agatha All Along would describe as "analog magic"--simple tricks with little inherent magic. Invoking Manon led to Nancy finally actually gaining her own magic, so the three of them technically didn't need Sarah anymore. But fucking with Sarah led to her binding Nancy, which inevitably led to Bonnie and Rochelle going back to square one magical-wise because they don't have anyone to siphon from anymore.
So the snake is normally seen as a symbol of transformation and rebirth 😊 Also the Times Three Rule is usually only attributed to Wicca, not so much other Pagan or Witchcraft lines of practice. There are ways that spells can rebound if done improperly or broken, but other practices does not have that hard and fast rule.
I find it so crazy that the actress who plays Nancy is the same actress who played Dorothy in Return to Oz! Quite a difference between roles! (The actress' name is Fairuza Balk)
Sophia, OMG, you finally are watching THAT bad bitch witch coven movie that I secretly enjoy as a guilty pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed a movie that I REALLY ENJOY considering I love witches and any form of magic. So proud to be in the Sophia Phan coven haha.
Fun fact that Fairuza loved being in this movie, she had knowledge of wicca and she literally put her out in the movie. It's amazing and i just adore this movie so much ❤️
always was upset that Rochelle got cursed cause like... magick was historically a tool for oppressed people to fight back against their oppressors? like she was doing what magick is used to do and got punished? HOW does that make sense?
I think the reason she got her karma like the rest was cause her initial intentions were to not hate Laura despite Laura hating her and fell back on those to humiliate Laura the way Laura humiliates her. And whilst, yes, I don't blame Rochelle for getting back at Laura a little heavier, I think Mano saw that as like dabbling in darker magick for petty revenge. Like with how Bonnie said she wanted to be beautiful inside and out, Mano could've sensed deep within herself, she only wanted to look good instead of being a good person who's also pretty. You see how it didn't take hardly any time at all for her become full of herself despite wanting to also be the same beautiful on the inside. She truly only wanted to look like a good person because she also becomes really mean after the spell. The same with Rochelle's nonchalant behaviour after humiliating Laura and acting like she also didn't do something wrong because Laura was being racist, the same way Laura is when doing the same to Rochelle, almost like she's becoming the type of person she doesn't like and trying not to acknowledge it despite that little voice in the back her head probably telling her what she did to Laura was no different than how Laura treats her every day and that that anger and resentment can turn you into that horrible person that's constantly hurting you (becoming the worst version of yourself basically and pretending everything's fine). But let me know if I'm like wayy off cause I could be looking into it too deep, being a witch myself, I know that karma exists and whatever hateful, power-hungry energy you give out can come back to bite you in the ass like it did with Nancy but on a more realistic scale.
@@somecynic808 oh yeah, they all did with the snake guy. I think Mano only helped Sarah out cause she wasn't a negative witch using her powers to get back at people or kill people, she basically had no intentions of hurting herself or anyone else which is technically how a true witch should be.
Bonnie and Rochelle truly didn't deserve to get that magic reversed badly on them. But I also like that they became bad people on their own and not because of Nancy.
had to google this for $175,000: now it’s valued $351,674.16. crazy how money inflation changes within 28 years. anyways, i love this movie because my mom introduced it to me at young age, and once i was old enough, i knew what it was actually about - crazy for a 11-12 year to go through lmao. one of my cousins dressed like them for Halloween and honestly, they killed it. iconic in my eyes. also i still watch it around this time to get in the spooky season. love the reaction to this movie!!! 🖤✨ ps. i like to think that the snake imagery is once you step on a snake, it’ll bite back. the snake being sarah because she’s “a natural witch” from her mother. kind of like Taylor’s reputation era how she took the snake thing you know? 💚
One of my favorite movies from my childhood! Had a huge crush on Neve Campbell when I was younger, I was the same age when this movie came out. Also, tomorrow is my birthday, I'll be 34 this year!
Secret Prequel to The Craft: The Return to Oz introduced Fairuza Balk as Dorothy. It’s maybe creepier than THIS MOVIE! mainly because it was intended for children!!!! 😮
Sophia has put a spell on me because I am obsessed! The Craft is hands down in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Not only did it inspire Charmed, but it also is homaged in several other films and tv shows.
I love this movie and I love showing them to friends that have never seen it before, but I always warn them about the triggers. Nancy is my favorite and I like to imagine a future where she gets out of that institution, amends for her mistakes and finds peace. Spending her whole life suffering locked away seems horrible. On another note, one of my most treasured items is a T-shirt Fairuza (who played Nancy) was seeling on her website to raise money to save wolves near where she lives. The shirt as a print an artist drew of Nancy and it is so beautiful. I wear this shirt almost every week. I love it so much. And it came with an autographed polaroid. 🥺
Bonnie left that Drs life in shatters she ended up stealing a baby, killed the mother, changed her name, moved to the suburbs and blew her brains out IYKYK
If I were more confident, I’d steal everyone’s outfits in this film >.< Thank you so much for the spooooky videos this month, you’re rocking the season!
I wore sunglasses in HS too. My dad and I have issues, but he told me if anyone said anything to tell them it's because my future is so bright, heh. In fact, our school had outdoor hallways and we lived in Florida, not called "The Sunshine State" for nothing. I mean, I was also goth and this movie was literally my first real date-date.
15:00 snake are a bit of cliché but are usually used to symbolize the Devil or other demon Thay have also positive meaning because they are associated eith earth element and can symbolize rebirth and new beginning because they can shed skin
The actress who played Nancy Fairuza Balk, also played Dorothy in Return to Oz, one of my favourite films, it can be a bit creepy though, fyi, but i highly recommend it,
Sophia, love your new (?) piercing! My opinion as an Internet stranger doesn't matter ofc. Still, it's inspiring to see someone living their own personal style the way you do 🥰 also, your videos are the literal best way to spend a break during a stressful workday. Appreciate your content so much 🙏
Probably one of the best witches movies ever in my opinion 🖤🖤 everything about it is awesome great story, Great casting and very creepy as well 😊 Enjoyed the reaction Sophia 😄😁💜
"You're white honey. Just deal with it." I quote that line to myself daily. A girl I had a sleepover with in 5th grade showed me this movie. I haven't spoken to her in years but I think of her every time I watch lmao
You need to see "Nancy" in American History X. It's an amazing movie. For a comedy she's in The Waterboy and is pretty funny. I love The Craft. It's a classic!
I watched this movie as an adult and loved it until the girls started fighting. I didn’t understand why the coven fell apart. It devolved in the last act.
Yeah like I expected Nancy to be a problem, but I didn’t think the other two girls were gonna try to kill Sarah too 😭 like what happened to sisterhood??
4:05 when I saw that, I was like, wow her character was for "realsies". Learned that fact in a RUclips video, the other way was more self harm or if you didn't know any better. When she said "The right way", I actually screamed.
most of these consequences make no sense when i think about them ; Sarah's adds up but the others' don't - Nancy doesn't lose her mind because she invoked Manon but because that's who she becomes with all the power he gives her ~
actually, i just realized Sarah got them with an illusion, so Rochelle and Bonnie's consequences aren't actually real ; they didn't ask for anything like Sarah did -
This movie actually contains a whole bunch of actual spells and rituals used in pagan and witch traditions. The most prominent one being "calling the corners", which is still used by witches today. It's really interesting how they worked real occultist traditions into the movie to make it ad authentic as possible to real world practice.
I LOVE this movie so much, but, it would be way better if just like you said, if they weren’t punished, I really love this movie but… they didn’t do anything wrong, I don’t love the ending, they deserved to be happy, even Nancy!! She is crazy, she is toxic, but all of that comes from her home, she turns her magic into bad stuff bc she didn’t have a good home, she was goin insane in that house, and she latched to magic in a toxic way, she deserved a redemption, she deserved happiness, I would’ve liked to yes have consequences and everything but without the wanting to off one of her friends and with a more happy ending, idk, they’re all just good and deserve better
@@SophiaPhannn It is but ur forgetting about Movie Magic !!!! Movie rules don't apply to our current economic situation. Im broke in real life but in a movie im broke with lots cool gadgets , furniture and a model girlfriend.
I recognized Nancy as Vicki Vallencourt from that annoying Adam Sandler Waterboy movie because of her distinct mouth. The mean girl whose hair fell out, I recognize from Arrested Development and the AD character she plays secretly has Alopecia - which is revealed really late in the show - Arrested Development notoriously has so many random, obscure easter eggs and that’s probably one of them. Like the entire cast eats weird green shaker parmesan cheese and mustard sandwiches as a silly Easter egg about the character Gene Parmesan playing Colonel Mustard in the movie Clue. The British Charlize Theron plot twist was crazy and when you watch the show again you can’t unsee all the clue and it just gets funnier.
See I knew that Spongebob episode was traumatic! 😂😂😂 I hate butterflies too lol This movie wasn't sapphic enough for me but idk 😅 I was deep into my witchgirl media as a child when I first watched this
9:18 Funny you say that cause if we're talking about the Wormy episode where Spongebob and Patrick think a butterfly ate Wormy and we're talking about that live action close up, that wasn't actually a butterfly. It was a close up of a cleg fly 😂😂 (or a horsefly. Where I read it said both.) Also the episode did the opposite for me. Instead of hating butterflies, it made me feel bad for the butterfly 😂
I first watched this on Halloween night, in the dark with a thunderstorm and home alone. At one point I thought I saw a big frog jump under my tv cabinet. They show up when it rains, it's normal but not that size and I couldn't find it to put it outside. All that to say this actually spooked me, especially nancy floating menacingly towards the guy (I didn't care he died tho😂). I watched it since without the perfect scary combination, it's a good movie 😊
i’ve never seen the movie outside of this vid but genuine question, what did rochelle do wrong other than side with nancy at the end? i’m guessing im missing something bc her revenge seemed very justified😭
10:12 Oh come on, mom, two-and-half feet is hardly 'high'. 😆 The WORM that burrowed itself into hundreds of thousands of teenage girls after they saw this film, I swear, I thought Hocus Pocus was a seminal film about witches, but WHOA did this thing prove me wrong. My little sister did that "light as a feather, stiff as a board" nonsense during a sleepover about 3 days after seeing this film and it scared the hell out of our parents. They were unsuccessful, duh, but it didn't matter; if Hocus Pocus made witchcraft seem fun and family friendly, films like The Craft and The Crucible made witchcraft suddenly dangerous again. It's not to say that the film made every character into a stereotypical 'bad witch'. Now, Fairuza Balk is FUN crazy but not FUNNY crazy, she has a ton of infectious energy and MASSIVE screen presence. You said it, she stole every scene she was in. The only reason I remember certain films like 'The Waterboy' and 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' is because she was in them. But again, she is fun crazy because we KNOW people that are that unhinged in real life. It makes for scary stuff and a good antagonist in the film. But I never found myself laughing at what she said or did because it was funny, only ever because it made me uneasy and a little freaked out as I watched her go from menacing and quirky, to genuinely insane and dangerous. That, beyond anything else, is what freaked a lot of folks out about this film and the movement it helped fuel; what genuinely disturbed/angry/ill people do when they finally have the power to change their surroundings. That's kinda what The Craft and The Crucible are, at their core; stories about power dynamics, how they effect seemingly normal people and what happens when a marginalized/ostracized minority finally upset those dynamics. The Crucible is a much more historically fascinating film and better acted IMO, but it wasn't NEARLY as popular or pop-culturally influential as The Craft. Nancy has never had REAL power until Robin show's up, and then suddenly, she gets a taste of something as intoxicating as it is volatile...and she's hooked. Robin wasn't looking for power, she wasn't even really looking to be a witch, really, not when she first arrives at St. Benedict's. She represents power tempered with naivete and, to a degree, virtue. She doesn't want to hurt anyone, she doesn't want revenge...she wants to be loved, or at least pursued. It's vanity, sure, but no more so than any teenage girl. And just like Nancy and Bonnie and Rochelle, the power goes all Jonathan Swift and proceeds to it's ironic and ludicrous conclusion. But whereas Nancy needs the power to feel...anything, really, loved, successful, safe, in-control of her own life, all the things she could not achieve on her own, Robin doesn't need to maim or injure or kill anyone to achieve her goal. She realizes how her power can be used for evil when she see's what it does to Chris (and then what Nancy does to finish Chris), causing her to pull back. Ultimately, yes, she is the stronger witch--and demonstrates it--when forced to defend herself. BUT (and I thought the way you did, too, I could have sworn she would return Bonnie and Rochelle to their former selves at the end), in the end, she takes the high road. Where vengeance would have been poetic, she choose saber-rattling instead. She gave them a warning...and left it at that. Nancy let the power control her and it got her thrown into an asylum. Robyn proved that 'the ultimate expression of power...is self control'. Great Vid! I need to re-watch more of these, get myself back into my 90s-Halloween-vibe. Did you ever see Balk's first witch role in "The Worst Witch"? Watch Tim Curry chew the scenery like a wood-chipper with no brakes? It's amazing 80s cheese and I love it to death. And don't be silly 13:37, you're beautiful just the way you are. Happy Halloween! 🌙🎃👻💀
Your videos are so fun! This is the first time I've run through this movie and could sort of understand how the spellwork of each witch had its good and bad points. They're teens and they're not going to navigate their troubles perfectly, but they're empowered to in the way that they want, to the extent of being harmful in the process. I suppose the telling of that theme was kind of awkward, but I understand the intention. I just couldn't get past seeing the Making Of this movie and a bunch of guy writers, directors etc. talking about how it's about young women discovering their sexuality?? Ick. Bonnie wasn't wrong for wanting to get rid of her scars, but her "narcissism" (poorly presented) showed she wasn't ready to be a Hot Chick without getting careless about everything else. Laura's revenge is sweet, but the blonde bully losing her hair had nothing to do with her ignorance, so it didn't really address the issue. She literally didn't understand why it was happening. And Nancy is perpetuating the abuse she's experienced. Justice for Nancy. Sarah is really cool, I'd be her friend.

You picked the best movie to squeeze into the end of the season 😁 I love this movie so much
15:00 snake are a bit of cliché but are usually used to symbolize the Devil or other demon
Thay have also positive meaning because they are associated eith earth element and can symbolize rebirth and new beginning because they can shed skin
Thank you!!
HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY HES SORRY! 😂
The actress who played Nancy Fairuza Balk, also played Dorothy in Return to Oz, one of my favourite films, it can be a bit creepy though, fyi, but i highly recommend it,
I was also traumatized by the Wormy episode of SpongeBob too. I thought I was the only one haha
Robin Tunney was in The Mentalist for years and years and years. Fairuza Balk is great in "Valmont" and "Almost Famous".
18:30 This part where Nancy is shaking her head and yelling at the boy in the room, appears in the end credits of Agatha All Along
Your hair is so pretty here!
Thank you!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
@SophiaPhannn yw!
4:30 it's a wig. She was shooting another movie at the time where she had to shave her head
I got so excited by the Katseye reference! Glad I wasn't the only one who went there at 'Manon'
I always get so excited when you upload a new video! 💖
Sophia, love your new (?) piercing! My opinion as an Internet stranger doesn't matter ofc. Still, it's inspiring to see someone living their own personal style the way you do 🥰 also, your videos are the literal best way to spend a break during a stressful workday. Appreciate your content so much 🙏
Like Elijah said in the vampire diaries, there must be a balance
I only see Robin as Teresa Lisbon, being The Mentalist my confort series.
I LOOOOOOOOVE this movie!! it was great seeing you watch it for the first time!
Probably one of the best witches movies ever in my opinion 🖤🖤 everything about it is awesome great story, Great casting and very creepy as well 😊 Enjoyed the reaction Sophia 😄😁💜
you do know the girl who plays bonnie she plays Sydney in scream, and sarah is wearing wig she shaved her head for empire records
The fashion in the movie gave little girl me major heart eyes 😍 and it still informs how I dress and vibe today
If you want a campy movie about witches, check out The Covenant
hope you're well ! loved watching with you as always. I saw this one when I was young and it made me love witches to this day
I’m doing okay!! ☺️🫶🏼
"You're white honey. Just deal with it." I quote that line to myself daily. A girl I had a sleepover with in 5th grade showed me this movie. I haven't spoken to her in years but I think of her every time I watch lmao
Awesome reaction of my favorite The Craft movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
Perfect timing for my lunch break omg!!!! Totes excite lol ❤❤❤❤
Such a great Halloween movie!!! Loved seeing your reaction❤
Thank you for the treat. Sophia you never miss.

ACCURATE!!! The SpongeBob episode did it for me too🙃
4:05 when I saw that, I was like, wow her character was for "realsies".
First time is crazy. For SHAME Sophia 😑😂
Fairuza balk made the movie. Her other big movies are the water boy with Adam Sandler and return to oz (wizard of oz sequel)
12:47 195k back then is about half a mil in todays currency
@ 12:44 ... $175,000 in 1996 equals to $5,573,502.53 today in 2024. So hell yeah they upgraded that quickly !!! Even after taxes
Wait I feel like 5.5 million is a bit over 😂
@@SophiaPhannn It is but ur forgetting about Movie Magic !!!! Movie rules don't apply to our current economic situation. Im broke in real life but in a movie im broke with lots cool gadgets , furniture and a model girlfriend.
Wait ur English class level analysis tho….snake/Adam and Eve = greed/temptation? Ie the magic they were doing??
I forgot she’s also in Friends and Rachel convinces her to shave her head - that’s hell of a weird type cast. She’s married to Ben Stiller.
you should really watch the Cinderella movie life acting (2015)❤💙
See I knew that Spongebob episode was traumatic! 😂😂😂 I hate butterflies too lol This movie wasn't sapphic enough for me but idk 😅 I was deep into my witchgirl media as a child when I first watched this
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Has she watched Sleepy Hollow (1999)? If not it’s so good
9:18 Funny you say that cause if we're talking about the Wormy episode where Spongebob and Patrick think a butterfly ate Wormy and we're talking about that live action close up, that wasn't actually a butterfly.
$175,000 would be roughly $351,674 today
$175k could buy *decent* real estate in 1996. But in Los Angeles, and an apartment that nice? Probably not
@ yeah for sure. Especially because penthouses like that are usually SO EXPENSIVE especially in LA. They would’ve lasted two - five months max.
10:12 Oh come on, mom, two-and-half feet is hardly 'high'. 😆
The WORM that burrowed itself into hundreds of thousands of teenage girls after they saw this film, I swear, I thought Hocus Pocus was a seminal film about witches, but WHOA did this thing prove me wrong.
“Oh my god she’s Jesus” 😂😂
the snake can be a symbol of rebirth and continual energy. there are also religions which see it in connection to water and life itself.
happy Halloween Sophia.
Petition for more greenery in the background kthanks
This movie and the Island of Dr. Moreau is all I know Fairuza Balk from
Omg i love this movie ❤❤❤❤ i also hate butterflies. Because of SpongeBob. I thought i was the only one
5:26 my thoughts exactly 😂
Discovering their sexuality… what… LOL I joke about how it could’ve been more sapphic, but there really wasn’t anything regarding sexuality in it 💀
