I absolutely LOVE Nightmare Before Christmas! I got to meet Jack's speaking voice actor (Chris Sarandon) last year at a comic con, and he said that this masterpiece of a film is both a Halloween AND Christmas film (so there you have it! Jack himself confirms the answer to this debate!). I also wonder how many people realize that Sally is the same actress who gave us Delia, Moira Rose, and the mom from Home Alone (Catherine O'Hara is an acting icon).

Honestly I'm calling it right now. When someone asks "is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or Christmas movie" the right answer is simply "yes." 😁 I think that's why it's such an iconic movie aside from the characters, the visuals and songs. It's for more than one occasion. You watch it on Halloween and then you go "well see you in two months for a rewatch!" 😂 Kind of like one of my other favorite holiday films Rise of the Guardians. It's a mix of occasions!
The ghost dog being the same dog from corpse bride was confirmed to not be the same dog by Tim Burton.
Tim Burton just loves dogs because he grew up with his family dog he considered his best friend

This is such a masterpiece! The stop motion, especially for the time is phenomenal, Jack's such a compelling complex protagonist, the culture clash of these different holiday is fun to see, and the songs are amazing, especially "This Is Halloween" and "Oogie Boogie's song."
Many people regard this as Tim’s magnum opus even though he didn’t direct it because he was to busy working on Batman Returns at the time. That’s why he had to settle for being a lead producer but he would still go in to the studio from time to time to consult on the movie as it progressed, and once Batman Returns was done this was able to have his full attention until it released. Despite that this movie is based off a book he wrote and illustrated so he did create the world, characters and basic plot. This is also the 30th anniversary of the movie
I got the biggest grin on my face when you mentioned the Nightmare before Christmas worlds in Kingdom hearts, those were always my favorite levels

I don't know if you're into music theory at all, but this film actually dabbles in it a little, with every time Jack sings, and when Sally sings.
There's what's called the Phrygian stank note that they both hit when they sing. It's basically a note that sounds slightly off from the rest of the notes being sung in a lyric.
You can hear it in Jack's lament, and Sally's song.
It's used to show their connection, even on the most basic musical level.
I know nothing about music theory, but that’s very interesting!!
Fun fact: Danny Elfman sings Jack's songs but was originally ALSO going to voice his talking lines, but his acting wasn't great so they got another guy to do it
He voices Barrel, the kid with the skeleton costume.
There is apparently a graphic novel explaining Oogey Boogey's backstory where he and Jack were rivals to become the Pumpkin King. He was devious at first, but he definitely became evil over time via a poor mentor. Worth a read if you find the time.
this is so cool! i think i read somewhere disney also released a sequel book that talks about sally’s backstory (SPOILERS: she comes from an old mythical door and was kidnapped by the scientist and pretended he made her... i think lol)

Amy Lee(Evanescence) does Sally's Song. Simple Plan does Jack's Lament. Marilyn Manson does This Is Halloween.
It's not dubstep, but it's still pretty wicked.
I sure hope everyone here played Kingdom Hearts! It was the bestest most magical and whimsical game on the PS2. I couldn't stop playing through it. They really did nail the Nightmare Before Christmas World. Probably was the best world in that game. It really captured the look and feel of the movie.

It was nominated for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects but lost to JURASSIC PARK.
It made $100 million dollars against a $24 million dollar budget and it has been confirmed to be one of Tim Burton's best movies.

I never really appreciate The Nightmare Before Christmas, it wasnt a fav of mine... Until I watched a netflix episode of "the movies that made us" and learned about all thr behind the scenes stuff!
- tim burton wasn't really involved at all in the project
- it took more then 3 years to make (the team was small, every 1 minute of film = 1 week of filming to make)
- most of the music that made it into the film were demos! With the composer singing the songs he wrote!
- Danny elfman (composer/singer) wrote the songs without a script!
A seriously cool epiosde to watch if you want to learn more about how they made the movie!
I don’t know. This has become one of my favorite movies, and I just watch it any time of year I want. (Lock, Shock and Barrel are my babies.)

There’s a cut verse from Oogie’s song where he spells out that he’s going to cook Santa into a stew and outright says since Santa is so big he’ll make a perfect meal. I didn’t quite process it as a kid when Oogie says in the final film he was feeling weak from hunger that he was gonna eat Santa and Sally.
The cut verse regularly shows up in stuff like theme park versions of Oogie’s song like at the Hocus Pocus show at Disney World. And a lot of artists doing covers keep the verse.
I love this film and I loved the PS2 game, little known. Additionally my favourite thing is that we know Jack can crawl around like a spider, so he basically crawled hand-stand style onto the platform that Sally and Santa were tied to, upside-down posed, then waited to be revealed dramatically. An icon.
When Tim was a kid he had a Dachshund. That’s why characters in his stop motion movies have them
13:56 the Christmas thing is mainly Jack's project, so the mayor might be more chill about it because there's less stakes in it compared to Halloween. alternatively he might be affected by the jolly spirit of Christmas-making, while normally he is more stressed out or anxious because Halloween is supposed to be "scary"
I think it's more Halloween because of the visuals for basically the entire runtime is spooky, but I would say it is a movie for both holidays.
Can't believe the movie's 30 years old now. And it's still one hell of a classic!

ther is an ost CD you could buy years ago where all the songs where re-done by diffrent artists. its called nightmare revisited. it has Korn, plain white tee's, flyleaf, marlien manson, etc. its an amazing cover album and kinda just goofy it exists.

Love this movie, always a good watch for Halloween and Christmas. Your comment about stop motion movies that are so smooth they look like CGI reminded me that there was a movie that was thought to be all CGI with a stop motion style, which resulted in the studio making sure all their following movies had a less crisp motion so it was very clearly not CGI. As for song remixes for Nightmare Before Christmas, the only one I've heard is the Marilyn Manson version of "This is Halloween"

I saw the nightmare before Christmas cutscenes from kingdom hearts. Then after that I got persuaded to watch the movie. When I first got Disney plus, I watched nightmare before Christmas and loved it. I have seen it so many times, I may have memorized all of Sally’s lines😅

I'd definitely recommend checking out the Nightmare Revisited album too - it's all alternative versions of the songs by different artists including Marilyn Manson, Korn & Amy Lee, also produced by Danny Elfman. There's a video of that version of This Is Halloween synced with the film opening on youtube too.

Indeed a masterpiece in stop-motion history! And a film to watch on both Halloween and Christmas. Also, if you are wondering if any sequels are around, we did get a sequel in the form of the 2004 video game Oogie's Revenge on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. There's also the 2005 prequel The Pumpkin King on Game Boy Advance.

I considered this more of a Halloween movie because it mainly takes place in Halloween town and its Halloween taking over Christmas. The only thing that really makes it Christmas is just Christmas town. Everything else is just Halloween taking over Christmas
I think Jack, despite bring dead, can die a second death (similar to Coco), after all the towns people though that he was killed again when the missile hit the sled. Not to mention that Jack describes that in a million years they would find only dust of him. Also Oogie Boogie said that he must ne double dead, so logically, Jack could have been killed again, for bones can be could be ground, burnt to ash, crushed, turn into dust with time (unless being properly preserved or even melt in lava.

This was a fun reaction! This movie is pretty much a Christmas and a Halloween movie. Doesn't matter when you watch it, lol. Klaus (2019) is an amazing movie if you're looking for more Christmas movie reactions! It was Oscar nominated but unfairly lost to Toy Story 4.

The thing that's always not worked for me with this movie is Sally and Jack. Why does Sally love Jack? She'd never met or even spoken to him before. Same goes for Jack falling for Sally. Like, there's just nothing there to base anything on. It's very high school, crushes based on superficial details and literally nothing else. Granted, it's a kids' movie, and I shouldn't expect a well developed romance, but they could have given us something, anything other than Jack is the Pumpkin King, of course she's into him.
Yeah their romance was pretty underdeveloped, but I had always assumed that they knew each other (or at least in passing) before the events in the movie
@@SophiaPhannn Maybe they did. The vibe I always got from that first scene where Sally sees Jack and watches him while he sings his lament was that it was the first time she'd ever seen him. That's just my read on it though, might not be what the filmmaker's intended at all.

It's impossible not to love this movie. The songs are infectious. The animation is phenomenal, even by today's standards. It's great fun and should be required viewing during the holiday season.

In the original ‘How the Grinch Stole Xmas’ the Grinch was just annoyed at the Whos for the surface level inconveniences that the holiday brought with no awareness of how what he stole didn’t stop the holiday.
In the live action remake, his motivation delves into the morally grey as he points out the shallow, materialistic, over consumption of the Whos around Xmas combined with his personal grudge.
In both versions he himself also fixes his mistake personally. Sandy Claws here undoes what Jack has done. Only kudos he gets is saving Sandy Claws from Oogie Boogie, but he wouldn’t have been there in the first place if it wasn’t for him.
Jack commits kidnapping, impersonation, and inflicting active terror on innocent people around the entire planet because of his ego.
