Guy just got up in front of a crowd and beat New Super Mario ... ... in 40 minutes ... ... without his hands ... ... while playing piano ... ... and talking to the crowd ... ... and dealing with technical difficulties ... ... and then to make it harder, he played it again, _blindfolded._
Me and my friend as kids tried playing Doom 2 with a basic steering wheel and two pedals. We even made it to map 02, so I guess it's time we prep up for GDQ lmao
I expected that certain keys would be tied to some buttons, so he'd play the song and it'd still read the input to be afap or something. This is sick af
I like how the tweet replies here say literally the exact same thing just worded differently. I guess the meaning of "MIDI controls" just isn't intuitively understood if you don't already know.
He’s not only playing the game and the piano, but he’s ALSO explaining bits of the run at the same time. This is INSANE for a marathon setting especially
Muscle memory is a powerful thing! Not to detract at all from the skill displayed here, just goes to show the time hes dedicated to practice. And hes still reacting, adapting to his mistakes on the fly, and changing the music to match the stars and such. Such a cool idea
Next up, we're firing sub-atomic particles into an original copy of N64 in a precise way to flip bits in order to beat the game while also performing brain surgery
As a musician, I can't explain how insane this is. Talking while playing music is incredibly hard, and requires a lot of focus. The fact that this guy did it multiple times while also playing Mario with weird controls... I'm amazed, really.
It's very easy if what you're playing has been practiced a ton which is the real hard part. After that it's all casting on muscle memory. But yeah all that plus controlling mario and blindfolded and speedrun is legit insane.
At 5:48 it is clear that he is listening to commentary and responding with his own, in addition to playing the game and piano. 4x multitasking is not something many can achieve.
this is legitimately mind blowing. especially when he starts explaining some bits of the game? i can barely cook and hold a conversation. this is an incredible feat of motor skill and cognitive multitasking
Such an amazing audience, I couldn’t hear the game audio at some points🤣I’m very happy with the run. 41 minutes is pretty good considering the controller delay which made it so much more suspenseful and entertaining! Thank you GDQ for such a memorable experience
This is so funny to me because I have Tourette’s and make repetitive movements, which is entirely the reason that I became a massage therapist myself. Get this man a massage indeed !!!
Something that hasn't been mentioned is how insanely difficult it is to also PLAY ALONG some music. When you play alone you can adjust tempo and can recover more easily when you miss a note. BUT WITH BACKGROUND MUSIC YOU NEED TO KEEP GOING NO MATTER WHAT. That is insanely difficult.
looking at the thumbnail, i thought it was a blindfold speedrun but it was a multitasking speedrun. goddamn salute but now I can't use the excuse man can't multitask dammit. thanks to you I got no excuse to be more productive lol
I got tears in my eyes watching this at several points, because its just such a wholesome feat. A person doing what he loves with an insane talent, in front of an astonished audience who is supportive, laughs, and jokes around with wee's. And all for the purpose of charity donations.
As a pianist its insane hes doing this and it isnt even his main instrument. Really really impressive. The arrangements are not bad either considering the circumstances
I thought he'd mapped the controls to a piano at first...which would have been impressive. But then he explained...and that was 100x more impressive! Jeez that ending though. I stopped breathing. Amazing run!
WE NEED A 4 PLAYER NSMB WII SPEEDRUN WITH THIS SAME CONCEPT!!! Imagine a quartet of different instruments playing mario songs in harmony all while speedrunning. Would add the extra challenge of staying on-beat with all the other players
It's an insane run, but as someone who has played the piano, it's even more insane. The focus, the dexterity, being able to explain the run while playing the piano AND control the game with his head and foot... It does seem complicated but it's even harder than it seems. Wild run.
This is the run you pretty much have to see to believe. And I was in the crowd. This is by far the most impressive run I’ve seen at the event. Awesome job Wes
Man i thought i was the coolest kid around back in the day for being able to beat this game in sub-60 min; had that little kid me seen this guy do all this i would've been immediately fucking humbled lmao. Genuinely incredible stuff
What I want most from this is all of Wes' arrangements played in tandem with the original soundtrack. The harmony between the two is incredible and I NEED world 8's blended songs to listen to.
trying to play piano while talking at the same time is already a pretty hard thing to do, he's playing a game with delayed motion controls on top of that. actually insane.
THE GOAT!! i absolutely loved watching this guy and was bummed he didn't have much in the way of views, hopefully this gets this amazing idea some more attention
Man, I don't know where to look! The game? Him playing Mario with his head (and feet) no hands? The piano playing? The cute dog in the background? Audience going Weeeeee? This is amazing! Good job everyone!😄
I didn't expect Wes to even have a chance to talk through the run with that frankly spot-on piano playing alongside his cool speedrunning (I mean, body-motion controls to let his hands be free, but also speeding along without finger-(and hand-)precision? Reminds me of blindfold runs~). Props to him and the team for providing such a unique (and wonderfully personally fulfilling) run~ ^^
As a kid my mom would ask me how I managed to sing along to a game's music while playing it. That multitasking is nothing compared to this, I am blown away watching this guy go
Watched this live, it was AMAZING. I remember hearing about it and being the person that learned the happy news to the runner, glad to see it went well!
Tbf playing piano blindfolded is a lot easier than speedrunning blindfolded. All the keys are in the same place the whole time, everything is an audio cue, and a lot of pianists look more at the sheet music than their hands while playing anyway, which means if they memorize the sheet music they hardly have to look at anything. Still insane to be blindfolded-speedrunning at the same time, of course, but not as impressive as the stamina required to beat the whole game while playing.
It's always super neat to see how multi-talented speedrunners are. I think that there can be a tendency to pigeonhole speedrunners as singular in their talents/pursuits, when in reality they can be incredibly impressive with a wide scope of hobbies
Absolutely insane level of mental fortitude and multi-tasking skill. I think the hardest thing about this, is enduring the hosts chattering, laughing, commentating right behind him while doing everything he's doing. Surely that's off-putting? Nevertheless, this is content I never knew I needed. Great job guys & Wes 👏🏻
Run is somehow more insane than the title implies lmfao
Guy just got up in front of a crowd and beat New Super Mario ...
... in 40 minutes ...
... without his hands ...

... and talking to the crowd ...

Ok now this convinced me to actually watch it
EDIT: WHAT THE FUCK
Yeah exactly. I clicked thinking huh fun. Then he explained the controls. Whaaaat
Me seeing this, no chance
Me 5 minutes in, you're UNDERSELLING how insane this run is.
Nice pfp 😎
GDQ 2035: Today we have a genetically modified bacteria in a petri dish playing Doom any%
Wasn’t there some guy working on that specific thing?
Well I think it was mouse neuron cells on an electrode plate…
Me and my friend as kids tried playing Doom 2 with a basic steering wheel and two pedals. We even made it to map 02, so I guess it's time we prep up for GDQ lmao
Not as far off as that, some scientists did successfully get rat brain cells playing doom
Do not build the torment nexus!
Basically a TAS run
I expected midi controls after reading the title, which would already be pretty insane, but this... what in the world. What a skill tbh.
Yeah I thought this was gonna be similar to the drum run from last year, but this is insane in it's own (and probably more complicated) way
I expected that certain keys would be tied to some buttons, so he'd play the song and it'd still read the input to be afap or something.
This is sick af

GDQ 2035 "Today i'll be running mario sunshine with a fire hydrant, while also creating powerwashing artwork of each stage"
Ok but imagine an Ace Combat speedrun but controlling the game through an actual Jet Fighter lmao
As a musician, I can't explain how insane this is. Talking while playing music is incredibly hard, and requires a lot of focus. The fact that this guy did it multiple times while also playing Mario with weird controls... I'm amazed, really.
The fact that he has to use his pedal to play the game instead of using it as you would in a piano it's crazy for me. That would drive me nuts.
@@rojan7227 he's not even using a pedal for it either he's using another joycon 😭
And then he does it again while blindfolded. That’s bullshit levels of insane.
he must have a LOT of practice to be able to autopilot juggle it so well
It's very easy if what you're playing has been practiced a ton which is the real hard part. After that it's all casting on muscle memory. But yeah all that plus controlling mario and blindfolded and speedrun is legit insane.
Kid Wes: MOOOOM, i wanna play marioo
Mom: no, you are going take piano classes!
Wes, years later:
Except the piano has nothing to do with the controls as stated.
@@Blit-X-TVLivethis comment also has nothing to do with the controls

The way he talks and plays during those segments shows how his CPU is running at 120%.
Can confirm it is very weird to hear your own voice in your ears talking at the same time. They're very good at syncing audio

That was a stellar performance! (Pardon the pun)
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Great job man!
You were INCREDIBLE. This was amazing on so many levels!
His neck must be so strong but so sore. Please give this man a massage

i thought this was going to have the controls mapped to a keyboard, and was proved wrong in the MOST delightful way
The title is lowkey a bit misleading, this is much more insane than what i expected LMFAO, insane work love it
Misleading in a good way!
2:18 the moment I heard there is a SHEET MUSIC for the run I know it's gonna be epic😂
looking at the thumbnail, i thought it was a blindfold speedrun but it was a multitasking speedrun. goddamn salute but now I can't use the excuse man can't multitask dammit. thanks to you I got no excuse to be more productive lol
There's a blindfolded section at the end of the run as a bonus
Watch the video till the end for a small treat lol.
You know the 2 people who would love this the most? Koji Kondo and Shigeru Miyamoto. I'm pretty sure at least Koji-san would approve of this.

This will go down as one of the all-time great GDQ performances.
26:43 The crowd's commitment during the 8-7 (lavacoaster) level is insane! New Super Mario Bros. WEEEEE
The accessibility using the... non-standard... controller point that was brought up was such a good one!
Yall need to rename this - I thought it was using the keyboard as a controller, but it’s so much more wild that that, and people gotta know.
