Hands down the most helpful videos on short game are all Phil’s. So easy to understand and replicate. Not a 25 minute dissertation on some minuscule point that loses the attention of the viewer.
For years I practiced and played with the hinge and hold and had a pretty good success rate. Just needed more practice. Then started trying Jason Day's locked wrist method and have been so inconsistent. Came back to rewatch this and remind myself of Phil's tips.
Works for me up to 8 iron. Ball has a super high flight and lands softly. Strike on the ball is consistent and pure. Phil's method works wonders to my short game.
Pure gold and he’s just won the pga at 50 Phil is a Legend his game will be folklore for generations to come. grandfathers will be telling their grandkids Phil Mickelson stories around the campfire, Amen 🙏 🔥👍💯👌👏
Yep. Very simple. Break your wrist right way. Keep your hands going straight to the hole...... And hit about 50,000 practice shots. Piece of cake. ;-) But how can you not love Phil?
I picked up Phil's video and have been working on his method for a couple of years. It has improved my short game. The locked wrist technique is probably okay for a low running chip when the ball is in the fringe near the green but that might be about it. Before learning Phil's method I wasn't using enough wrist in the backswing and was getting inconsistent trajectory with the higher lofted wedges. A pitch shot requires more wrist hinge than I thought it did before learning Phi's method.
This is Phil's method for either Height or Spin (depending upon the Lie). For a lower, running shot Phil plays a "Back in the Stance", more Forward Shaft Lean at Impact Stroke.
I was having major issues getting it close from 25 yards in. Using this technique I am not consistently getting the ball within 3 feet of the hole. I love this and am very comfortable using it. Thanks Phil!!!!!
Noticing Phil's comment about hinge in the bunker lesson coupled with this chipping lesson has improved my bunker shots greatly, which was the weakest part of my game. I had some natural hinge in chipping, but losing hinge early in bunker shot was killing me. Much easier to think of it as Phil explains it.
It works for Phil because his trail shoulder drops extremely (to shallow the club). If you dont drop your shoulder as extreme, you will dig into the ground every time!
Steve Stricker uses the locked wrist method and hes been number 1 on the pga tour from inside 100 yards for the last 3 seasons, number 2 was Zack Johnson, who also uses the locked wrist method. My point is this works great for Phil but other methods are clearly as effective, the stats dont lie.
Does'nt apply in this case, so your point is irrelevant. The pga does'nt make up stats for political or other reasons, they are the facts of who's short games are the best throughout the year by the numbers and Stricker is the best, so once again your comments in this matter are obsolete.....
They May be Obsolete but not as redundant as your brain kid. What Im trying to say is that different people chip different ways. It wasnt a good season for phil and thats why he hasnt been up there and its the first time strickers gone into the top 5 . Phil was NO1 in scrambling from 1997-1999 and again in 2004 2007 and 2010 Stricker only once. Shut your face before pulling your obsolete arrogancy here
i just seen a video of hank haney teaching the lock yer wrist technique, my local club pro taught me that same technique. I trust Phil. I will never take another lesson from my club pro again :)
there is a competing school of thought for chipping that tells you to lock your wrist and hit with a putting stroke...it will promote a lower flight. And if done under the right conditions works well enough,. Haney is a big proponent of keeping the ball on the green as much as possible..."minimum air time, maximum ground time.." Phil's way is better in that it can be more consistently applied to all types of shots (both flops and low runners).
Also depends on the type of grass you're playing on, how fluffy the lie, etc. Wet conditions need a diff approach, dry and tight conditions hinge and hold is the way to go.
I have the chip yips, working hard on this, the key is to keep the body and head still while you hinge your wrists and accelerate the hands to the finish...
@@Yodumeee other way round, this is Phil going High, OR for Spin and Check, depending upon the Lie. Phil's releasing runout Chip is played off his Back Foot.
I think he might have misread about the clock/pendulum method. What I've seen before is that you bring the club forward *at least* the same distance you brought it back-but that doesn't mean you bring it back to, say, 1 o'clock on every shot! It means if you bring it back to 5, you swing forward to 7; if you bring it bring it back to 3, you swing to 9. The point is exactly what he later says: you need to accelerate through the ball, and if you're bringing the club back to 3 and then swinging to 7, you're almost definitely not doing that. I think his assumption is that everyone hinges, but someone like Jason Day doesn't. (That said, I love his method.)
Daniel Folsom- He sure did misrepresent the clock drill. Funny thing is, his short game guru at the time (Dave Pelz), whom he mentioned in another part of the video, to this day still teaches the clock method to control distance in the short game. Pelz does advocate taking it a little further on the follow through than on the backswing to insure you don't decelerate into the ball.
Good Morning, I am writing a book targeting Golfers who are trying to improve their scores to 90. I would like to include the link to this video in the book. To whom may I make the request? Thank you
In golf, a 3 foot circle refers to a circle where every point is 3 feet from the hole. Everything is measured as a radius because you're only trying to get the ball to the middle of the circle (the cup). Don't let geometry get in the way of common sense golf terminology.
mctrees02- I know it's 7 years but that comment needed a reply. Common sense is what gets golfers in trouble. Common sense tells most golfers to scoop the ball to get it into the air because common sense doesn't allow for the idea of hitting down in order to get it up. Clear, precise science would be a better choice than common sense in every case and a 3 foot circle has a radius of 1.5 feet. A 6 foot circle has a radius of 3 feet. That's science and common sense too. Ever hear anyone in golf say the hole in the green is 2 1/8 inches ? Everyone who knows the size says it 4 1/4 inches . Visualizing a 6 foot circle is a much better mental picture than a 3 foot circle also. That's a hole with a diameter the size of a man laying on the green. That's BIG!
No mention of how to bring it back in terms of line. Inside the line a bit? Straight back? A bit outside and then back in? That's the only thing missing for me... well, except talent... I have a lot of loft on my clubs... some will appreciate the reference.
First of all, nothing in geometry says that a 3' circle indicates diameter nor radius. Perhaps in means circumference. Stating "3' circle" is ambiguous without context. When talking about golf, everyone that I have ever known is concerned with distance to the hole, so a 3' circle around the hole is 3' from the hole. Phil is completely accurate when he states 3' circle, so no need to add confusion by even discussing radius and diameter.
A 3 foot circle has a radius of 1 1/2 feet, it is not me who is confusing people. If you want to hit the ball to 3 feet from the hole then its a 6 foot circle, sorry but that's a FACT.
Facts are facts, if he chose to define them another way that's his choice but it does'nt make him right irrespective of how many majors he has one, a 3 foot circle is a 3 foot circle and if you hit the ball to 3 feet from the hole then you have hit the ball within a 6 foot circle, THAT IS A FACT.
It's a mini punch shot with a wedge. You could easily hit a 100 yard punch shot with a 6 iron using the exact same technique. It might take a while to strenghten your wrists to keep them firm and ahead of the ball right through impact. No breakdown.
Yes it works up to about 180 yards for me (with a 4 iron which goes 200 yards with my full swing). I use it a lot. it goes straighter on average than a full shot but lower and its a little harder to guage the distance. Its best used when direction control is the only thing that matters.. such as a second shot on a par 5 from out of the trees through a narrow opening... Tour pros use a variation of this all the time ...
Can i just say that it's really a 6 foot circle with a 3 foot radius. If it was a 3 foot circle around the hole you would need to hit it 1 1/2 feet from the hole every time to be within a (3 foot circle). 6 foot circle not 3, sorry Phil. Otherwise EXCELLENT video presentation.
A point that is 3 foot from the hole makes it a 6 foot circle, not a 3 foot circle, sorry but saying dont let geometry get in the way of common sense is like saying dont let gravity get in the way of the gall ball. Facts are Facts and a person new to the game would know that a 3 foot circle has a 1 1/2 foot radius. So its important to be accurate just like Phils chipping, have a nice day Sir.
This is such a flawed method. You are taking the bounce out of play number 1 number 2 controlling distance is significantly more difficult. Watch GG swing tips he shows why it’s not a good method.
I am a big fan of Michelson, but he is completely wrong about there only being 1 correct way to chip, ala hinge and hold. It's a pretty stupid statement actually. You only need to look a Jason Day's no hinge style chipping to know this. Phil really shows his ignorance in this clip. I agree that the "same distance back and through" is crap, but to say hinge and hold is the only correct way is just pure nonsense and ignorance. Again... see Jason Day...who, along with Phil, happens to be one of the best short game players in the world.

I'll have to try that.
How does this fit with the technique he covers in his Chipping 101 video? It is a totally different technique than what he presents here.
Wasn't he talking about hitting a soft shot that stops in that? This is straight forward chip and run

Thanks Phil
You’re welcome Justin
notice how he moves his hands slight forward right before breaking his wrist. Not sure why he doesn't mention this but seems like a crucial step.
Would you also use this technique while attempting a bump and run with an 8 iron for example ??
Awesome thanks..Phil
Helped a lot cheers

correct technique do not lock ur wrist. Hinge and hold for any club. Be aggressive.
