You sir, are THE MAN!! You took 6 months of me being totally confused about chartplotters and made it clear as can be in 21 minutes! Thank you very much!
I looked at so many videos to explain the charts and numbers and bought a 44cv and just realized it was the wrong one based on your video. Thanks for the info!
I just purchased a echomap uhd 75sv for my kayak. Here in Australia its preloaded with aus/nz blue chart and comes with a gt56uhd transducer out of the box. With active captain you have access to all of aus/nz coastal coastal, rivers and dams
Double T, I just got to this video. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all the variables and various units available from Garmin. I'm just getting into this stuff because, I have a 2014 Bennington Tri-toon boat with the Yamaha 350HP on it. The boat was fitted with a Garmin Echomap 50s on it from the factory. Well, that Garmin unit has been operating just fine up until a couple days ago. All of a sudden it lost charting. There's no contour mapping, no shore line, no coves etc. showing where we're at here in Lake Havasu AZ. Now, I know, lake Havasu's not that big but, I like to know my position and where certain coves and little hiding spots are. And this unit just lost all of that. Garmin tried desperately to assist me in updating the unit. But, that Echomap 50s is not accepting any updates for some odd reason. Soooooo, what this all means is, I think it's time to UPGRADE. The 50s was/is built into the dash and Garmin doesn't have anything newer that will fit into that hole in the dash. So, I'm gonna have to purchase a whole new unit. And watching your video has helped me learn on what I might want to go to. I surely appreciate it. Thank you. Scott
Great video. I have the 93SV UHD partially based on your videos. I learn something new every time I’m on the water. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
@@DoubleTFishing working my way thru your series a 2nd time. I pick up more each time. Getting back into boating after a 10 year fly fishing break. Live in San Diego, buying a "pre-lived" 18 ft Grady-White center console that has an in-dash Echomap 74. Will put a T-Top on and wanted to add a small radar unit for safety when our fog rolls in off shore. Any way to integrate the current unit with radar or will I have to add a Garmin GPS Map Series and use it as a 2nd display? Guess I could take out the Echomap and put it on the front of the boat and replace its current position in-dash with the GPS Map unit if I can't integrate. From what I learned watching your information, I will not be able to share displays because they are diffent series, correct? Or was I just up late and got confused? 😅
@franktrucchio3979 That is what I understand they are not set up to communicate. I don’t have a GsMap so it might be worth a call to Garmin 800 800-1020. Thanks Rick
@yeechia7233 not that I’m aware of, there are some thru hull transducers that support side vu but they would stick down past the hull. Thaks at all. What is the ideal maximum speed of the boat so that the sonar can have a good scan of the bottom to detect fish?
I’m actually not sure what the maximum is? I set my transducer to be level at 4-6 mph to get good images on clear and side view. My traditional cuts out when I get up on plane.
Not related but do you need the paid maps to adjust the water level? I have the Navionics app on my phone, paid around 20 bucks for it and you can adjust the water level. Sad if we have to pay hundreds to have this functionality in the unit.
I’ve haven’t found a way to change water levels outside of QuickDraw maps. I’m pretty sure the dynamic lake level is on the paid versions only but I haven’t checked in the last few updates. Thanks for watching Mark!!
Hello from Sweden Thank you for very helpful information. Would you recommend ECHOMAP UHD2 5" Ice Fishing Bundle ? It will be my first ever fish finder 😊
Either during Black Friday or late February early March. At least that’s when they have traditionally gone on sale. Got my 106 last March 😊, thanks for watching Rodrigo!!
The side vu is a great tool for finding structure. Gives you allot more area coverage on larger bodies of water. It depends on your fishing style I suppose. Have a great day and thanks for watching.
thanks for the reply .. I do do a lot of big water .. so I am guessing it would be beneficial for the sv. Thanks again your videos are very informative and helpful when investing in these spendy toys.
Yes they are!! Just FYI the side and clear vu are limited on deep water, anything over 300’ deep, look closely at the transducer ratings for depth if it’s deep water
Dear Sir, I'm around your age and I was just looking for a plane chart plotter and maybe a fish finder. This video is very confusing so I will need a salesman to just give me what I think I need. Thank you, new guy on the water.
Ok I have ordered me a fishing kayak that doesn’t have a place for a transducer. I will be using an in hull a GT M 15 or 8. I’m not sure which fish finders are compatible to. Can I use any of the striker series? I need a bigger screen as I’m 66 and bad eye site
Go ahead and search Garmin marine transducer selection guide and that will give you suggestions for the recommended unit. Pay attention to the number of pins your fish finder transducer accepts. You can also call Garmin at 800 800-1020 they are very helpful. Good luck with the new kayak!
What are the “trails” I see on my charts that appear like a roadway with perpendicular lines thru it. Are these track lines from other Garmin Community users?
@@DoubleTFishing I adjusted two settings on my phone and the ‘user track’ lines disappeared. They didn’t show any helpful information that I noticed but I’m new to this so maybe it’ll be something to assist in the future. Thank you!
I intend to buy a fishfinder for offshore fishing. The depth of the sea where I want to fish is up to 70 metres. I have a small boat Pasara Vega 4,5 meters and a motor Tohatsu 5HP 4T. I was almost decided to buy a Garmin Striker Vivid 7sv + GT52HW, the price at which I can get a new one is between 500 and 550 EUR. At the same time, I am in a dilemma because at the moment the dealer is also selling a GARMIN ECHOMAP UHD2 72sv + GT54UHD-TM at a discount for 1.069 EUR. I fish trolling, I started with Slow Jigging, but I will be fishing a lot mainly for squid. Is my decision to buy the Striker for 500 EUR correct or do you recommend Echomap? I was looking mainly at the transcuder, so I was looking for a GT52 instead of a GT20, but I am aware that the GT54 is even better, and the Echomap fishfinder itself is better. The only question is, will I even need and benefit from the advantages of a better fishfinder? At the moment I have an old fishfinder, a Humminbird One Hundred, which serves me more as a depth finder, as I rarely see fish and maybe only in shallow water.
I do think you would gain in image clarity with Echomap but it sounds like you don’t really need the maps which is the most significant difference. You can build your own QuickDraw contour maps in your favorite spots, set waypoints, etc with the striker. With that said if the Echomap fits your budget it will give you the best chance of seeing fish at those depths, if your planning to use mainly traditional sonar the striker is probably fine. Just FYI the best match for deeper water when using clear and side vu is the GT56 transducer. Hope this helps Rick
You get a more defined image, networking capabilities with other equipment such as a Garmin trolling motor. You can hardwire network two striker fish-finders. Basically the striker is a great standalone fish-finder but if you want future expansion, livescope connection and contour maps you need to get an echomap chartplotter. The image quality of a striker is pretty decent but seeing details such as fish separation from a brush pile in clear vu or side vu would be more difficult, for traditional 2D sonar and locating basic structure in clear and side vu they work good. Hope that helps
I was at Cabela's Canada April 4 2023 and they told me the new Minn Kota powerdrive70/ip. 24 volt will hook up to Garmin echomap UHD 75sv is that true or not?
Hi Walt, unfortunately I’m not an insider just an angler but Minn Kota and Hummingbird are under the same corporate umbrella. I would be surprised if they hooked up with Garmin to have GPS sharing and navigation. With that said you can connect the built in Minn kota transducer (if equipped) with your Garmin chartplotter for Sonar and water temp
I’m not an expert but if it’s just for navigation purchasing one of the new ECHOMAP UHD2 would be a reliable solution, it wouldn’t communicate with your existing chartplotter though. You could just use a tablet loaded with active captain and hotspot off your phone. The problem with that is you have to have a cell service which might not be as reliable.
