To be completely honest. I went from knowing little to nothing about fish finders. I have watched almost all of his videos over them and have went from clueless to fairly confident and I appreciate it so much. No one else is this good at explaining. Thank you so much

My wife’s Grandpa passed in April and we acquired 2 of his boats. A small 12 foot very lightweight aluminum boat with an old 15Hp Johnson and a larger Lund with a 30Hp Merc. He used to take my wife fishing when she little. We took a bass fishing charter earlier this year and we both had a blast. I’m 32 and have never done much fishing. We plan on fixing up both the boats and are looking forward to getting out several times this year. I’ve been loading up on everything I can learn via RUclips. This is great stuff!
Johnny the paint roller for signing a check is an awesome analogy!!! I have learned so much from your videos. I applied the information you have shared when I purchased my Ti2 Elite 9 for my kayak. I can't wait to get on the water with it after the ice is finally gone!!
Very very helpful video. I've been fishing for 35 years, but just recently bought my first boat/fish finder... Theres alot more to it then going out and using it the first time. This video was extremely helpful. Thank you
I'm not sure I've seen many videos that don't have downvotes. There is a certain segment of the population that is just unhappy and want to share their misery with everyone else.
I got my first Structure Scan the year Lowrance released them. Through trial and error, i eventually learned how to use them. This video was the best and easiest way i have ever heard this info presented. Wish i had this video available yrs ago.
This is by far the best sounder tuition video I’ve watched on RUclips. You sir are an absolute legend and I’m looking forward to trying out my new Lowrance sounder with some confidence.
By far, one of your best yet. I've been trying to explain why we use graphs to my father in law to find fish off shore and this is perfect. He's been a bank angler his whole life andive been trying to help him expand his options to be more productive on the days his go to bank spots are not productive
I'm a new subscriber. I just got my "dream boat" a year ago this month. It has a helix 7 at the console with mega side and down imaging. Prior to watching your videos they were nothing more than something cool looking to me. I had no idea how to use them or what I was looking at. I am continually watching your vids on using side and down imaging. Thanks very much, very helpful.
Great video. Much appreciated. As a bass angler and saltwater salmon fisherman I can say that I’m embarrassed at how little I know about my using my electronics. Im watching all of your videos to get myself up to speed. Thank you.
Your videos are some of the best I have seen !!!!!! I fished alot "back in the 1970-1980s", then job, kids, sports, house, etc. didn't leave much time. Retired now and got back into fishing about 3 years ago. Mostly from the bank, but bought a jon boat this past spring and it came with a Lowrance hook 2-4X finder. I have a little Deeper Start fish finder that I used to cast from the bank and bridges. Your videos have explained soooo much that I did not know. Do you do any videos about catching crappie? Thanks
Thank for the video. I've been using my side and down imagining for years and I learned something new today. Didn't realize that I was losing distance with the water column.
I've spent thou$and$ to add DI/SI & M360 to my new boat, but I learned more about which to use and when from this video than I've learned anywhere else.
Should have mentioned that after you scan and go back over the cover, your down imaging will also provide a depth that the fish are in. This gives you an idea of what lure you should be throwing, or "count" you should be using to stay in the strike zone.
I recently purchased a Humminbird Helix 7; I wanted the side-imaging feature. I couldn't work out what all the marks were until I came across this channel. It is brilliant and explains the difference between SI & DI plus when and how to use both to find fish. One of the best instructional channels I have ever come across! Wayne B. Australia
This is one of the best instructional videos that I have seen. It has helped me to make a decision whether or not side imaging is worth investing in for me or just more bells and whistles. Keep them coming.
This video is #1 for new fish finder users. Thats me. Now we need how deep to efficiently use side scan along grass banks. I fish parallel two banks in grass, 4 to 8 ft. of water . Sometimes dirty water. Can I use side scan. Or just fish the line and be happy with that.
I live in north Idaho and every year, I go out on the water with my helix 7s and look for fish. I use the SI, DI and chirp sonar views as you suggest. The other day I looked for 3 hours, covering water depths for zero to 35 feet, which was the Maxum depth of the lake. Water temp was 43 degrees, just after ice out. I did not run into anything I would say was a fish of any kind. Not bait fish, no fush period. This has been my experience every year with fish finders. I was hoping last year when I bought the 2 helix 7s my experience would change. I know there are fish there somewhere. My fish finders tell me to go to a different lake.
Again, Johnny you knocked it outta the park!!! Very well composed and articulated with excellent analogies and graphs!!! You and Randy are one helluva one 2 punch!!! 👍😃🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🍺
Hi all. I primarily fish a small Indiana resevoir for walleye. Where the eyes are totally structure oriented for the most part off the bank on deeper structure. Your videos are fantastic Johnny. Thanks much.
I know this video may be old but I thank you for your in depth video on how to better utilize the fish finder/sonar. I have never understood how to use side imaging and down scan and finally had to research more information and this is by far the easiest for me to understand. Thank you!
I've never used a fish finder... I've fished for decades learning how to read weather & water conditions & fish behavior of different species I like to catch & rarely leave the lake empty handed... I like the surprise of knowing I guessed right... that being said, this does look very interesting... Never learned how to read, or use these things...
Some people are good at teaching, this would be you sir. I’m new to owning a boat and using electronics to fish so this opened my eyes up to side and down image. Wish I had found this months ago. Thanks

From my past understanding of SI, it seems to me your example is correct, but may be a little confusing, i.e scanning 100’ on each side in 20’ water. A)Theoretically isn’t any feature that shows up at the edge of the water column on both the left/right image (perhaps protruding into both sides of the water column are) directly below the transducer? B) I believe you are correct with 100’ selected in 20’ of water you are scanning 80’ on each side of the transducer, but to clarify you are not scanning 80’ horizontally on each side of the boat, rather 80’ from the T/D to the object, weather it is a bottom feature, structure or suspended fish?
This is great information Jonny. This is going to be yet another video of yours I watch over and over. Can't wait for the ice to melt here on Truman. Thanks for sharing.
Not sure if you explain this in other videos, but the location of your transducer to the right of left of your boat's centerline will effect getting "on top" of your waypoint when you go back over using down scan. If my boat is 8 feet wide and the ducer is 3 feet from the centerline on the right side of my motor, when I return to the waypoint on a reciprocal course, my transducer is now 6 feet away from the transducer's previous line of travel! Something to consider....
Johnny, great video as usual. I do want to remind you of Pythagoras, however. In side imaging, the distance scanned along the bottom is not the range minus depth, but rather something a little more complicated involving square roots. In most cases, the result is that the distance scanned along the bottom is usually only a little less than the range. See my reply for an example.
Given: scan range is 50ft, depth is 20ft (2:57 in video). Distance along bottom = sqrt(50^2-20^2) = sqrt(2500-400) = sqrt(2100) = 45.8ft. So in most cases, the distance scanned along the bottom is within 80-90% of the scan range, unless it is very deep relative to your scan range.
ugh thank you so much.....i'll be honest I've had a boat for 2 years and the graphs still look like magic to me. If only I could get the 3d structure scan working now.
Watching this video, it would really help if you’re fishing, the Shallowater and someone else watching the graft side, scan and picking up some merged structures under the water and marking them with the cursor then go back and finish those spots
