All great info!! Thanks! I was out slow drifting working on my fish finder and trolling motor in Oceanside CA. I kept coming up on the same school of bait fish swimming North as I’d power up and move. About half mile north of my first map of bait fish I saw some big arches pass through. Next thing I saw was a huge pod of dolphin feeding. Not sure if the big arches were the dolphin or the bigger fish going after the school of bait fish then the dolphin smoking the predatory fish. Cool to see. Definitely take time a patience learning these systems. Thanks again.
I have never been able to read these machines very well, many!! years ago, my paper machine was amazing, grouper, snapper and cobia all had a distinct signature, never failed, I used to make notes on the paper and when the roll was done cut them out and keep them in my log book.

This course clears up the mystery of how to most effectively use your fish finder sharing technical expertise as well as pragmatic instruction. Captain Peter Deeks does an excellent job breaking down what one needs to know to use a fish finder to catch fish.
Very nice explanation we are preparing a complete research about this topic because people really don’t know how to read screen properly keep it up 👍 & lets go fishing 🎣
Hi guys Chris from Australia - great video and the description on the use of the sounder . I wish I knew how to send you some photos of my sound when we were at tuna fishing in Victoria Australia I will try to work on it
That third tip totally confused me at the end when he was talking about bait fish not being behind the boat after showing up on the screen... He said not to throw 12:30 If someone can help with what he was getting at that would be great
thank you so much I can't wait to see more I have a Garmin 4 striker and have never used a fishfinder before but I knew it would be helpful for me and my Jon boat Fishing.I'm not going to actually mount it to my boat either I'm going to have it on a pole so hopefully it will work out for me
@@hankschrader149 i had to upgrade my transducer to the gt23 as the standard one was showing me fish arches at a maximum of 70 meters which is not enough. The gt 23 is much better
I was running Sabiki rigs for RedSnapper but I only saw large clumps of bait fish every so often, and it was always fuzzy. I don’t really have a size reference for the the size of the reading and the size of the actual fish.
I find significant information from a flasher unit (I still use a Vexilar FL-8 and old school Lowrance Green Box). They have their utility. Especially bottom composition (hardness) rocks, sand, clay, muck. Not a big fan of auto-tune stuff. If I move over muck, I don't want the gain artificially boosted to compensate for the signal being attenuated by the muck. Just ends up making more work for you while searching for the correct bottom and reading structure. With time, you become very good at reading signals and bottom composition. Determining weed types works better on a quality chart/screen recorder though. Paints a better picture.
the time vs. location vs. direction part was SOOOOO helpful. I have always looked at fish finder screens like, HEH? Where are the fish... question ... do they make a finder that shows a top down view of the cone IE the cone circle that shows where the fish are heading...they have to right?
What about speed with relation to current flow? If you're spot locked, but the current is 3 mph, is that the same as doing 3mph on a still lake with little current?
Very informative, I used to make the mistake of thinking something that passed the transducer line was ahead or behind my boat, won't waste my time again, thanks 👍
If it's real time and the fish are directly under the transducer when they just come on the screen what if you change the diameter of the of the cone? If I made the cone larger wouldn't they come in the view as soon as they enter the cone before they reach the transducer?
Had a Lowrance that showed a very bumpy bottom because of the waves, switched to a Garmin and it smoothed out the bottom to show it's actual contours. They don't all distort the bottom due to the waves, the Garmin was able to correct it
@@tommckelvey3609 The Echomap, both the Lowrance and Garmin were about $700 each, this was about 4 yrs ago. I fish in Rocky Point, Mexico which is mostly a smooth sandy bottom but the Lowrance always showed a wavy bottom with 1-2 ft bumps, which we knew was not the case by dragging a weight while fishing.
water temp is important. I leave an area based on water temp only. too cold or too hot and most fish move to the deep . deep holds cold water in lower part and hot water in upper water . it also hold salt water in lower part as it is heavier and fresh water on top as it is lighter.
So, what I conclude from this is that the information on your screen is really just a guide for what's in the area. I tend to use mine to find structure and drop offs as opposed to looking for actual fish. By the time you see it on your screen and cast to it, it's probably long gone...
Thanks for the informative vid guys. From time to time I'll have a fish start coming into view, backs up out of view and then comes back into view and finally goes across the screen. When it comes in and out like that, what does that exactly mean? Is it following me? I did have dolphins around on those days but not sure if that could've been it. Hope that makes sense. New Sub 🤙🏻

Question - you have shown us what bait fish and some fish look like on the screen, now I want to catch the fish. How can we tell how far the fish are from the boat?
Thank you, thank you, this is exactly what I needed right now to help me figure out my new Garmin for my Kayak! I spent a ton of time on utube and did not get what I needed, then came across this. I should have know to start with Salt Strong for help.
One mistake I see often finding the correct depth while trolling. When the fish off to the side, it will look deeper than it is since its further away. Sometimes it appears a fish came off the bottom then went back down (in a big arc). In fact it may be a long way out (looks deep) then passes under the boat (looks shallow), then the boat moves away from the fish (looks deep again). The fish may not have even moved but the distance changes. One would assume the fish went deep, and you set your trolling depth too deep.
I can read depth changes in shallower water just by difference in water but deeper water usually not. Locating bait not breaking the surface, forget it. Depth finder changes the game and it is a big ocean out there.
Sir,how to know fish going direction in boat running condition like..,north east, north west and south east, south west..please teach clearly with videos example
A lot of helpful information thanks. My question would be when would I know or how to know when the bottom is rocky or jagged if that’s the waves moving the boat and it’s really flat
People don't understand the cone. and how that circle goes from small diameter (close to transducer), to a large diameter deeper in the column. This is why many choose to use planer boards to cover a lot larger area.
Its all history, only the a scope if turned on is live. and at the bottom of the a scope it will tell you how large the bottom of the cone is on a garmin.
I’ve had cheap sounder’s and expensive ones and the best one I found with hardly any tweaking and worked in all depths showed fish unbelievable was the new koden sounder with the bells and whistles but. It was almost 10 grand. But worth it
It always used to crack me up when my buddies ALWAYS think we are on structure and im shakin my head like maaaan thats the SWELL appearing on the bottom view lol
I have a problem when trying to get over structure I have seen on my screen. Once I see structure in my screen like you said it’s now behind you somewhere. How to I navigate back right over the top of it? Wind and current always screw it up and even when I mark it and use my navigation it never works for me! Any help would be appreciated
ultimatejay I recommend the second u see it depending on where ur bottom finder is wired on the bottom of the boat it’s probably in the back corner so I recommend purchasing a spot marker, then the second u begin to see the object come up in the column you will be able to see how u drift in comparison to the mark then u anchor accordingly
As soon as you see structure or anything of interest you need to highlight it and make a waypoint. Regardless of the speed of your boat, the scan rate of your view, the mode and view your in, the gps in your tech knows where that is even when you don’t. MAKE A WAY POINT. Then switch to chart mode and navigate to it...AND FISH IT.

Nice vid! A lot of people miss that about the bottom and waves. Thinking it’s a rocky bottom. Greaat point!!!🙌🏽

It might be similar but overall a different situation

Or you see them while trolling at 6 mph and by the time your buddy shuts the boat off and you stop drifting youre 300 ft off the spot now.
Or you drive into the wind/current, wait til you mark an area of high density fish and then cut the engine and drift back over it
