    The only things I can see as a problem, is that there is no venting in the boxes. And if there were a lipo fire in a box, I've seen the bottoms get red hot, and start a fire on the surface that the box is sitting on. Both are serious considerations if using the boxes, and it's great that these problems have been pointed out and options given to aleviate them.

      There are videos that show if you don't make holes, or cut the lid seal, they'll bulge badly from just one 3s2200mah lipo and some boxes explode with another one stored.

      I removed the rubber gasket from mine, except for the piece nearest the clasp. Without the rubber the lips don't stay tight and flop around. Cut out all of the rubber except that one piece and you get venting and no flopping.

      You do want some venting, otherwise it will build up pressure and explode if there’s a lipo fire in the box. At the very least you’ll want to remove the rubber seal from the lid. A lot of people also drill extra holes for venting.

    I would add that if you would like extra protection for your batteries and the heat and gasses from a fire you can line the box with some refractory insulation otherwise known as ceramic wool. Prob have to go to an industrial supply house or masonry heater builder. Might have some scraps for you. The wool can also help filter a lil bit the venting gasses from a fire. I like the idea of separating the batteries from each other w the little bags. Good show!

    Oh I am glad you decided to play safe with the lipo batteries. I certainly learnt my lesson the hard way. I've got an ammo box as well as the Batt Safe box. When I got my Batt safe it was only £37 and the current price on Hobby King is £42 although it's on back order. Anyway I think that the most likely time for a lipo to go up is during charging so I just put the 1 or 2 that I'm charging in the batt safe box and store the others in the ammo box. Probably better if you can charge with the lid shut if you can find a way to run the cables. One thing the Batt Safe does is to filter out the nasty black soot from a lipo fire and it would be good if you can find out what they use and use some over the vents. Anyway definitely a good idea to get them away from your lovely RC collection :-)

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  4 года назад +1

      Thanks mate! It was your experience in particular that prompted me to get off my butt and get the LiPo's out of the house. I also saw a guy on instagram lost part of his house just last week. The Bat-Safe I was looking at was the XL (or whichever is the biggest), actually it was a Pulse, either way it was $130aud and $170aud shipping, which is just nuts. My problem is I don't want to store all my batteries together, that's the reason for wanting three. I will keep looking for Bat-Safe in Australia though, even if I just buy the small one just for charging. The worst part of my old (lazy) storage ways was the drawers I stored the LiPo's in were directly below three drawers full of paint. Stupid, I know! 🤣

      @@RCHobbyShed Ah well I'm glad that my misfortune has prompted you to take action. It is very scary when your house is on fire I can tell you that. Anyway, hopefully the Batt Safe might become available there for a more reasonable price at some point. Meantime at least they are away from the house and anything flammable (like paint!). Another thing I did was to get the smart smoke detectors that talk to each other so if the one in the garage goes off the ones in the house also go off and a voice tells you where the smoke is and also messages my phone. Just being super careful these days! :-)

    Quick question do you need to remove the rubber gasket seal on the ammo can or does that help prevent oxygen increasing the fire if it were to go off

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  2 года назад

      I remove the rubber seal. The LiPo's don't really need the oxygen as the fire usually starts by a chemical reaction in the battery. It's best to remove the seal so it doesn't cause a pressure build up and go off like a bomb. 👍

    Are use the same method however the rubber gasket that is around the top of your ammo can I pull a little section out and cut about an inch out of it on each side that way it actually has a way to vent in case of a fire if one of these batteries were to light off it could explode the key in and turn it A shrapnel device or you could drill some very small holes in it and I have seen people put some muffler packing around the holes to act as a spark arrester this seems to work pretty good info here

    I am fairly new to the world of LiPo batteries. While I am not an RC hobbyist, I do have an electronics toolbox that I run off 4S LiPo batteries (lights, soldering iron,etc.). And it is not like I have heaps of them kicking around. One of those 50cal ammo cans in on the way right now (hopefully showing up really soon....looking at you DHL!). My plan is to line it with sheet rock for thermal insulation and give it a top with some vent holes as well as a compartment full of sand that is sealed with a sacrificial layer of plastic. So in case the stars align all wrong and one of the batteries goes rogue on me, the sand should take care of that. Does that approach make sense or am I overthinking this?
    For now, the batteries live in a thick clay flower pot which stands on a concrete pavement slab on my desk, with 55lbs of sand sitting right next to it. Yes, I know - far from ideal. But I do not have a garage or garden shed to put them in. I am trying to make do with what I have and try to be as safe as I can be. I do not "fear" LiPos, but I have a healthy dose of respect for them.
    (Edit: and of course I make sure to have them on storage charge at 15V, give or take .2V when they are not in use)

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  3 года назад

      It sounds like you have some great plans there with the sheet rock, sand and venting. No, I don't think you're over thinking it at all. It's easier for me as I can leave my ammo box in an empty corner of the shed , well away from everything else. You don't have that option, so I think your sheet rock and sand idea is awesome. Better safe than sorry, and you're playing it safe! 🙂👍

    I just got one of these from my Secret Santa at work and it has a seal on the lid. I'm debating on whether I should drill a hole or two but then I thought, if I add holes, this adds air for the fire to burn and wonder if not putting holes in would help reduce any flames (no air, no flames?) or would pressure build up and the box either explodes or eventually melts the seal and it burns anyway? Think this would be an interesting test for an accomplished you tuber such as yourself to try. I love the idea of using lipo bags as well, it might preserve a few of the batteries while you run out side to open the box and dump everything out, hopefully saving most of the other batteries.

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  4 года назад +1

      I've done nothing with mine other that pull the rubber lid seals out. But I have mine on steel shelves with nothing else close to them. Without some venting, either by removing the seal or drill holes, you run the risk of the box exploding. I have see some guys drill holes in the lid and use fibreglass mat under the lid to help suppress flames/smoke. Hope this helps. Have a great new year! 👍

    Question: I have the same set up - lipo batteries in lipo bags in ammo boxes. I live in an apartment where pretty much all floor is carpeted. I have the ammo boxes on cinder blocks, but they are in a corner about 6 inches from the walls. Is this safe?
    I should also mention, all my batteries are small, 2700 mah max, but I have about 25 batteries of varying strength and will likely have stronger batteries in the future. Hopefully, I'm being overly cautious. That's the goal at least. And I live in Florida, so there's too much heat and humidity to store them outside.
    The only other thing I can think to do would be to put it all in the bath tub in the guest bathroom. If I moved it a meter away from everything, it'd be right in the middle of a room.

      I really think the bath tub idea will be the best for you though, great idea by the way! 👍

    I don't want to be the "party pooper" here, but I just watched another video on youtube where they set the battery off while in an amo box without the seal. It held up very well, except tons of smoke and some fire or sparks came out of each of the ends near the lid. You'd want to make sure the box is at least 3 or 4 feet from anything flamable, I would think. They measured the heat and it got up to about 1000 degrees. The box held up and the lid didn't pop, but I'd also want to have something non flamable underneath also. There are some guys drilling holes in the top to let the pressure and smoke out there. Just to let you know I watched another video of the bat-safe, (regular size) and it did great with the medium size battery, but when the guy put in one that was about 5000 mah or something that was big, it sent fire outside the box all over the place. He was about 60% over the recommended size when he did this, so there was a warning from the manufacturer on that. Wish I had the links for these video's, but I'm sure anyone could find them under lipo box or bat-safe demo or something like that. Marc T.

    Be sure to remove the rubber gasket in an ammo box. Or your ammo box will become a pipe bomb if a lipo battery vents.

      Don't remove all the rubber. Keep the side nearest the lid clasp. That way the lid still closes tight, no flop or rattle, but you get venting on the 3 other sides. I bought two boxes and pulled the rubber out of both, cut the short ends on one, put one each back in each of the cans and kept a whole gasket in tack in case I ever want to fully reseal one.

    Now you have to go through each bag and box to find that specific lipo haha. Nah just kidding. I have an ammo box I’ll put to use now too. Better to be safe than sorry with a lipo fire. Always balance charge and storage charge at the end of the day. Thanks for making this vid 👍

      Lol that's right I do. I only backed them up for the camera, will take them all out today storage charge them and repack. I planned on numbering the boxes so I have an idea of which battery is in which box. 👍

    Literally almost everyone who stores lipos or talks about storing lipos in ammo cans, never thinks about or talks about the simple idea of lining the bottom and or the insides of the ammo can with a piece of drywall / hardi-backer.
    Me personally, it's also a bad idea to store multiple lipos within the same ammo can unless you create dividers between each, otherwise you're creating a recipe for disaster for all of your lipos if one decides to catch fire.
    On another note, test have proved that those lipo charging backs are trash.

    You shouldn't put more than one battery in a bag as they can set fire to the others in the same bag!
