    Great thorough video!
    I have had two occasions where I discharged my 3S 2200 45-90c Nano Turnigys to close to zero volts. One by getting it caught in a tree overnight, the other by crashing in deep brush and not finding it for a week. Both were slightly puffy and my charger would not "see" them unless I charged them on 'NiCAD' at a very low rate till they were at around 3.3v/cell.
    I continue to use them. They have maybe 80% capacity, and I watch them carefully while charging and storage.

    tailguner is correct, it's a little of both. You'll see guys using "sausages" at the field sometimes and they'd argue otherwise but the fact is the polymer has been compromised and the there's a good chance the plates themselves are distorted depending on the severity. It tends to cascade as well: outgassing compromises cell performance, cell resistance increases, heat generation increases, etc. For packs used on very low wattage applications the cascade is slower. Higher power, higher risk.

    Hi. Great video thanks for that. One question: some battery manufacturers advise you to keep balance lead conector covered when keeping batteries together in orderd for them to not accidentaly get damaged by touching one to another. I have never heard anyone doing this. Is this something you would recommend?

    This is a great video. Wish I had seen it over a year ago! I bought the Phantom 1 just after it came out plus 5 extra batteries ... Turnigy 2200 mAh 25-50c. I used it for perhaps 5 or 6 months and then stopped using it. I don't know if the batteries were charged or discharged when I stopped using the quadcopter. Most likely some of them had been discharged by the quadcopter to the appropriate voltage, but unless I had used them all on the last day of use, some were probably put away fully charged. There appears to be a slight puffiness in the Turnigys ... definitely none in the original battery that came with the Phantom. Is there some way I can test these batteries to see if it is alright to continue charging them. Can this be done with a regular multimeter. Is there any other piece of equipment I can buy to facilitate this operation. Thanks.

  • @2BrothersHobby
    @2BrothersHobby  10 лет назад

    There are a lot of chargers on the market that offer internal resistance testing as a feature. Problem is: internal resistance varies with load and temperature so any bench testing you do without a consistent baseline won't be much help. I test my batteries with the TP 820 CD charger at a consistent room temperature and keep a log. Although it may be inaccurate at the field, I can baseline my packs in the shop and keep track of their performance over time.

    Some manufacturers don't thoroughly test their cells for a burst rating, so they'll only list the constant rating for the battery. Keep in mind, actual "C" rating is closer to 85-90% of the listed value. This is due to voltage drop, wire resistance, temperature, etc. You should always size your battery for constant discharge amperage as calculated by your motor's constant rating. This will leave overhead for burst without risking too high of a draw under average conditions.

    Hi there. I have some lipos (2200 3S and 5000 6S) which have been stored discharged (3.75/cell or so) for 3mo. Then I charged and they looked good on the voltage meter but the helis started to bog, then I added an meter with alarm and even with a full 4.2V charge 20 seconds in a hover the charge fell below 3.7 and the alarm started to beep. Are those lipos damaged or they could be recovered? Thanks for such well made videos.

  • @kensproles5816
    @kensproles5816 3 года назад

    Very new to lipos. I starting out with spektrum smart batteries and charger. 3s 3200mah 11.1v . The first battery was fully charged and I used it playing with my apprentice just setting up everything up for a few days. Put it back on the charger and put it in storage. Storage put the cells at 3.93 - 3.95- and 3.96 volts.. Isn’t that a little high for storage? Great videos by the way.

  • @2BrothersHobby
    @2BrothersHobby  10 лет назад

    It really depends on the number of cycles, battery age, chemistry, purity of materials, etc. Storing at full charge is taxing on any LiPo and can negatively impact cell cycle life, capacity, and performance. The extent of the short term/long term impact varies from one battery to the next. People often think there is no damage but they aren't monitoring ongoing internal resistance per cell or trying to get the full cycle life or capacity out of the battery pack.

  • @acaone1
    @acaone1 10 лет назад

    Thanks for the response, can you recommend a tool or procedure to determine the internal resistance of a battery?

  • @2BrothersHobby
    @2BrothersHobby  10 лет назад

    To answer your car question: it depends on your powerplant ratings and use. For example, offroad courses have you constantly on and off the throttle so as long as your battery is rated for the motors continuous draw, you'll be fine. Airplanes, boats and helis tend to be the higher risk since extended full throttle use is more easily accomplished. Finally, there's no safe way of calculating unknown burst since it depends on the battery's specific chemistry, internal wiring, etc.

    Hello. can you help me please with some advice? how do I keep my batteries in order not to lose their capacity? even if I put them on the shelf to 50% (lipo storage) some of them lose their capacity when they load them ... for example from 2500mah I still have 1200. I tried to discharge them and charge them again many times believing that this cycle will resurrect them but without success. some of them or puffed and used 2-3 times.
