disclaimer - I am not a lipo expert and I only show you what I do, it is down to you how you manage and store your own lipo batteries.
Lipo charging safety case made from Army 50Cal Ammo Box Storage Metal Case, this is how I made a charging case for my lipo batteries.
    lipo battery
A lithium polymer battery, or more correctly lithium-ion polymer battery (abbreviated as LiPo, LIP, Li-poly, lithium-poly and others), is a rechargeable battery of lithium-ion technology using a polymer electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte.
The main advantages of LiPo battery cells are that they have about four times the energy of density of nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries. LiPo batteries are very lightweight and pliable, and can be made to almost any size or shape.
The typical lifespan that we can expect from a LiPo battery pack can on average about 2 to 3 years
The maximum charge cycles for most LiPo batteries tends to be around 300. But even 300 recharge cycles is optimistic. That only applies to higher quality batteries. Many LiPo batteries will not even last for 300 charges,

Top tip from someone that drills metal on a regular basis.
Always drill a pilot hole first, 3.5mm is my go to size. Then go to the required size drill bit. Makes it so much easier.
Also if you need a hole larger than the size of bit you drill chuck can accept, buy a step drill. Pick one up for next to nothing from most hardware stockists. Makes a way neater finish than doing the hula dance with your drill and undersized drill bit! Also safer the drill won't snag sending the work piece spinning across your work bench! 👍

I just built my own battery bunker from the same type of ammo can.
Before that, I spoke to a firefighter on what they would do if they were to store LiPo batteries.
Based on the information I got, I used this approach:
I lined the inside of the ammo can with .5 inches of sheet rock. The bottom has a double layer of sheet rock with a cutout for the raised indent. The sheet rock provides pretty good thermal insulation. For transport, the recommendation was to put the batteries in a vermiculite based packing material (lightweight, provides cushioning, is inflammable). A vent hole with some steel scrub pads (NOT steel wool, because that stuff is pretty flammable!) stuffed in front will also mitigate the risk of a flame shooting out of there and affecting the surrounding area.
Oh, and the smoke is also pretty dangerous in itself. Not only does it smell quite bad, it also contains Hydrogen Flouride (HF), which is extremely corrosive and toxic af. There is no way to filter that reliably with anything you could buy at the hardware store.
And for those cases where stuff is really going sideways, the recommendation from said firefighter was to dump a big old load of sodium chloride (a.k.a. table salt) on the whole thing. They basically use the same approach for metal fires (e.g. Magnesium - and also Lithium). Yes, I know - there is very little metallic Lithium - if any - in LiPo batteries. Still, in the case of a fire, the salt will melt (NaCL melts at approx 800 degrees C) and encase whatever is burning.

For the fumes, I plan on placing the whole ammo box in a larger metal "fume box" where it's sealed with an exhaust fan to chuck out the fumes outside.

This is an excellent idea to contain a fire.
In 91 my house burned down. I had a ammo can full of rounds. They went off in the box. The box was intact and not a single round punchered the can. It had a serious amount of dents from the inside. I could still open the can and poured out spent cases and a blop of lead.
So it is very rugged. The only downfall I can see is the ports can have flame coming out like a rocket if a battery cooked off.
So there must be some type of way to seal them. Maybe make some leads for through the can. Then on inside section off a small spot and pour Chico and let it setup with leads through the wall.

    • @vexy1987
      @vexy1987 Год назад

Sealing the box would turn it into a pressurised bomb, unless you extinguish the flame. The point of putting it in a box is to buy time whilst you take it outside.
