    It’s mid 2023 as I write this; I’m 78 years old and just stumbled across this video. I play just enough guitar to wish I could play better, but this has been a favorite song of mine for nearly 60 years. I greatly appreciate what you’ve done with it - not just your guitar work, but your entire arrangement of the song. Your voice is perfect for this song and the vocals are as good as any I’ve ever heard. Really well done; I’m impressed! 👏

    One of the Stones’ best riffs. I didn’t know Brian wrote it. I figured all of the most memorable riffs came from Keith. There’s a lot more going on than I realized. Thanks for the tutorial.

  • @Bliggick
    @Bliggick 4 года назад +11

    That D chord in the solo is in the wrong position. It should be at the 7th fret. You can see Keith play it on The Ed Sullivan Show performance. Also Brian plays banjo-roll arpeggios in the chorus on the A bar chord 5th fret and D bar chord 10th fret.

    Surely Brian deserved a song writing credit for his riff contribution which makes the song, Keef!! Without it what have you got ? ... nothing that special Brian R.I.P.

    • @Ovalvox
      @Ovalvox 5 лет назад +6

      Philip Jones Exactly! The only thing original on this song that Keith stole from the Staple Sisters is Brian’s guitar. If anyone deserves a credit for this song it was Brian. His guitar makes the whole song the hit it was.

      I agree that Brian Jones's guitar riff is a huge part of this song, but writing or playing a riff doesn't necessarily mean songwriting credit - the Kinks "You Really Got Me" is another example of no songwriting credit going to the person who played the main riff. The song "You Really Got Me" is given sole songwriting credit to Ray Davies, but Dave Davies plays the main guitar riff. You can still play "The Last Time" the way Keith is playing it - that's actually the melody. Giving Brian Jones songwriting credit is something they could have done if they wanted to but I don't think they had to.

    Brian was a superb musician when it came to arrangements. Probably that was his beef with Mick and Keith, that most Jagger/Richards songs never included him in arrangements: The Last Time, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Under my Thumb, Ruby Tuesday, 2000 Light Years from Home, Paint it Black, We Love You, She’s a Rainbow, etc

Just good ole Rock N' Roll but its all gone now and another group will never ever grace the stage like The Beatles or Stones. Don't forget Tommy James and the Shondells either. We had the best. In 1960s Britain, there was practically ONE national broadcaster (the BBC or British Broadcasting Corporation). Only TWO TV channels - BBC 1 and BBC 2. For Radio, the BBC had that mostly covered with 'Radio 1' and 'Radio 2' and Radio One played Popular music so I grew up with Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, Stax, Motown, Rolling Stones, Merseybeat bands, Frank Sinatra, American pop/Soul/R'n'B, LOTS of white bread pop, Cliff Richards, the Shadows - all very white and mostly very polite and reserved! The guy showed you the most important part because it's a little bit subtle and something that could be missed and that was the hammer ons during the riff. As for the gauge of string used, the lbs per square inch applied to the bends and the underwear worn by the sound engineer - they are merely superfluous.

Instead he plays them as arpeggios while Keith plays his part. If you listen closely to the recording and watch live performances you can hear and see this. Otherwise, a good job overall.

    Here's a question: what about the arpeggiated part in the chorus? I hear them clearly under the acoustic on the mono and stereo mix. Something else. The sheet music doesn't show the inherent swing feel for the notes. I think it's triplet-feel shuffle time. Playing is straight sounds stiff.

    James: We create our own recordings for 3 reasons.
    1) Yes, licensing the rights for the original would make the product cost prohibitive.
    2) What we are presenting is an "easy" play-along intended for the average guitar player to sound like the original without the slavish attention to minutiae that may turn off the casual fan.
    3) When we create our own recordings, we are able to present on the book/DVD a player that allows the consumer to mute tracks and create custom mixes (e.g. mute vocals).

    thanks for that wonderfull help i always played it right,but in a ,much more ,,complcated ,,position.grippin with my indexfinger in the 2nt fret e 5 ,and the ring-mid-and pinkiefinger played the melody on the high e-h-and g side.THIS one sounds better and is WAY easier to play.its so important for me,cause its an alltime favourite from stones,and this version is much better for a single guitarist to fake 2 guitars.-again, thank you !

    Good job, but one big thing missing: The little string squeak when going from A to D!!

      That just 'makes' the track...used to think it was Keith Richards' finger work but only recently discovered it was Brian Jones on the Teardrop.

    I always thought it was A7 in the chorus. Sure sounds like it on the record. Could just be my ears.But the solo was spot on I think better than the other YT ones. Thanks!

    NinetiesYouth: "Inaccurate" is a somewhat broad brush and why are you commenting on "Jumpin' Jack Flash" on the video for "The Last Time"?
    If you could, please be more specific about any issues (tuning, fingerings, harmonies, etc.) you feel are inaccurate and we'll be glad to address them on that video. Please bear in mind that the "Jumpin' Jack Flash" tutorial is based on the original studio recording, not on any subsequent live performance. Thanks.
