  • Are you having a lot of histamine issues and histamine symptoms and wondering about Mast Cell Activation Syndrome Versus Histamine Intolerance? Maybe you have itchy, dry skin, post-nasal drip, an ongoing cough, or acid reflux. Lots of histamine symptoms can mimic other conditions. So in this video, we're going to look at the difference between mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) versus histamine intolerance.
    *DAO Supplement: geni.us/zb8Ksv (affiliate link)
    We'll look at the similarities and differences, as well as some of the things you can do about histamine intolerance and high histamine levels in general.
    We look at mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) versus histamine intolerance. MCAS is not the same as histamine intolerance, but they are often confused or used together. Both conditions involve a problem with too much histamine, and because of this, they can present with similar symptoms. For this reason, the terms are often used interchangeably.
    MCAS is a complex and often under-diagnosed condition characterized by abnormal release of mast cell mediators, including histamine. It leads to a wide range of ongoing and varying severity symptoms, which can affect different parts of the body, ranging from digestive to lungs to skin.
    With MCAS, mast cells are overactive and hypersensitive to various triggers. Once triggered, they release inflammatory and immune mediators. In people with MCAS compared to normal people, they have many more triggers, and when they do have a trigger, the response is more intense than would typically be expected.
    On the other hand, histamine intolerance is a condition characterized by an inability or poor ability to metabolize or break down histamine. This can lead to an accumulation or excess of histamine in the body. There are a few different ways that histamine is broken down in the body. The enzyme in the digestive tract most commonly associated with histamine intolerance is called diamine oxidase (DAO).
    When you don't make enough DAO, it is typically due to a genetic or inborn issue. The main job of DAO is to break down the histamine that is already contained within food. DAO can be taken as a supplement when you have the genetics for low DAO production. Sometimes people take it empirically because they think they might have this genetic alteration. The other major enzyme that breaks down histamine in our bodies is histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT). This enzyme requires a methylation in S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) specifically in order for it to work properly.
    Like DAO, HNMT is under genetic control, and some people don't have well-functioning HNMT enzymes. Additionally, there are methylation SNPs and problems that can lead to not enough SAMe, which is the main cofactor for HNMT. So there are many reasons, and these are just a few of the more common reasons, why someone might have histamine intolerance, meaning an inability or poor ability to break down histamine once it is released or once it is in the body from foods.
    In simple cases of too much histamine or poor breakdown, adding some support to these enzymes or decreasing the amount of histamine coming into the body can be very helpful. However, the simple cases usually resolve on their own anyways, and you don't really end up having a lot of issues ongoing.
    So it's important if you do have symptoms of high histamine to differentiate between mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), histamine intolerance, and local mast cell activation that is not part of a syndrome.It's also important to note that sometimes taking support for histamine breakdown and elimination can actually make things worse before it gets better, so if you're super sensitive, you should be very cautious about what you take and how you take it.
    However, looking at the overall histamine levels in the foods you're eating and reducing that is generally going to be a safe bet for anyone that's struggling with high histamine symptoms.

    One thing I didn’t realize was cooking homemade both broth (even from grass fed cows) is high in histamine. I think I was told by a rancher to not cook/simmer it too long. I always thought longer the better (to a point). If you’re not super sensitive to antihistamine then don’t worry. Very interesting video.

      I have suffered for years with months long episodes of head and chest congestion and coughing. Frequent upper respiratory and sinus infections. Tinnitus 24/7 since 2014. I finally found a chiropractor that works on the atlas/orthogonal and another who practices old time chiropractic. They have eliminated so many of my symptoms and I think through trial and error I've found possibly another piece of the puzzle in these videos. MCAS or histamine intolerance makes sense

      Oh no I always have terrible symptoms after drinking bone broth and they always tell you it’s good for you when you have digestive issues! Yogurt is also high histamine along with anything fermented like kimchi or kefir and they always tell you it will help your tummy but it makes me so much worse! There is a low histamine diet but it’s insanely hard to follow.

    Thank you for this video. I had symptoms of this, and I have late stage Lyme disease with many complications. A friend sent me info on MCAS, so I investigated and found out I have cousins who are diagnosed with histamine intolerance. I also found out that a heart drug I must take will cut DAO levels in half for weeks after just one dose! So, rather than give up so many very healthy foods and have to cook two different meals for myself and my husband, I just take an antihistamine at night, and I take 8 mgs. of DAO 3 X daily with every meal. I try to avoid having a lot of high histamine foods at the same meal. It helped me very quickly, so I think I guessed right. Doctors where I live do not have a clue, so we are on our own. I had all of the symptoms you mentioned except my blood pressure soars rather than drops, the same paradoxical reaction that occurs when I am stung by a bee, for example. SAMe did nothing for me. Taking DAO has also improved my rosacea and stopped the endless itching of my scalp.

    Diagnosed with MCAS. Have high speckle boddy pattern, but no identifiable autoimmune disease. Have controlled my symptoms with supplements and not eating any high histamine foods anymore. Have had issues since getting undiagnosed Lyme and a personal emotional trauma event. Does a high speckle body pattern with no specific disease indicate MCAS? Or is there another issue I should look for?

    • @swintegrative

      That is a question for a rhematologist. They can do all the tests to identify if there is no specific autoimmune disease. Speckled is associated with an autoimmune disease.

    Can MCAS be triggered by a previous Covid infection? I got this catastrophic skin infection on my chest, that spread to my back & neck eventually. I was given an antibiotic, antibiotic cream & a steroid cream & an antihistamine. I became lethargic, barely functioning because I couldn't sleep for two months & the itching was driving me crazy. I am much better at this point, but I used to have a resting heart beat between 45-50. Now its in the 60-to 70s range. Doing research I believe I suffered MCAS. Is that increase in RHB histamine related?

    so when you say that taking support supplements for healing will make you worse before getting better, that means it is worth sticking it out and we should expect improvement to come later? any ballpark ideas of how many weeks later? so we should know when to stop if it going too long?

    • @swintegrative
      @swintegrative  5 месяцев назад +1

      Well, sometimes people do get a little worse before they get better but the other thing is depending on your unique situation, genetics, etc. you may actually get worse from specific supplements and not get better. This is common with methylation vitamins, and supplements. So it’s important to get a healthcare provider that can guide you and go on low and slow.

    • @alanacreates

      @swintegrative which supplements are methylation ones?

    • @meagiesmuse2334
      @meagiesmuse2334 3 месяца назад

      @@alanacreates - You would want to take the methyl forms of vitamin B9 and B12, ie. methylfolate and methylcobalamin rather than the more commonly sold forms, which are folic acid and cyanocobalamin. Methylfolate can make some people feel worse though, so try them separately to see how they affect you. I have two out of a possible four of these genetic methlation mutations, which are called MTHFR mutations. They can be found by doing blood lab tests.

      I have been having symptoms for 5 years which I beleive was set off from yeast that I used to make bread with.
      Ever since then ongoing stomach problems. I have eliminated the burning sensation from cutting out all allergies, do you recommend anything to stabalise mast cells? I am taking DOA supplements when I accidentally eat something that is causing a reaction( I'm still in a food elimination process) for example: I was doing well all day then a green tea set off a slight histamine reaction due to the caffeine, I used to be a heavy coffee drinker and I stopped just 4 days ago.
      Coffee is making my adrenals and stress responses go through the roof causing histamine and dizziness which is my main and most prevalent symptom that I've been battling for years.
      I seemed to be ok today on a very plain diet, chicken & beef, rice , honey for sweetener, avacado, bananas and apples.
      Had some rice rissoto stroke brought and had a histamine reaction, think it might be flavoring, because it seemed addictive and that's usually a sign of MSG. Took some DOA and feel better to bring histamine down. But still dealing with a slight nagging dizziness, it's like my inside is rocking like a boat without me moving. I also think the DOA is lowering my blood pressure a little too much.
      Any thoughts or ideas ? .thanks in advance 🤲🏻❣️
